Is Phil Robertson Wrong?

You’ll excuse my confusion, but amidst the hyperventilating screeches — GLAAD claiming that Phil Robertson was pushing “vile and extreme stereotypes” — maybe I missed what it was the Duck Dynasty patriarch actually said that was wrong.

“It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would
be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me.”

Is it a “vile and extreme stereotype” to say that gay men engage in anal sex with each other? Or is it in some way objectionable for heterosexuals to say that they prefer the opposite sex? Why is this offensive? To whom is it offensive and why?

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty,” A&E said in a statement, which was reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

Again: Why? Not just why has Phil Robertson been placed on hiatus, but why is A&E obliged to proclaim that they are “strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community”? Is someone threatening to sue them for discrimination?

Mary Katharine Ham points out that Duck Dynasty “averages 14 million viewers per episode,” 4 million more than the much-ballyhooed finale of AMC’s Breaking Bad. A major reason for the show’s popularity is the down-to-earth backwoods Bible-thumping wholesomeness of the Robertson family, whose values Phil Robertson rather bluntly expressed in a magazine interview.

It would seem to me that A&E is cutting off its entertaining nose to spite its profitable face, and that once again the tail is wagging the dog: The gay minority (no more than 4% of the population) dictating to the straight majority, as if the 96% had no rights at all.

  1. I’m in the end for freedom of the individual to express or do what he/she wants. Whether it’s two people having consensual sex privately or someone decrying gay sex or whatever the hell else it maybe. It’s called the 1st amendment idiots! Read it and learn it! While we’re on the subject of gay slurs does the gay left have anything to say about Alec Baldwin. Even better question; which is worse a TV celebrity redneck Christian decrying gay sex or Iran’s policies towards hanging gays? BTW Barack Obama just cut a deal with them to lift economic sanctions that makes them give up practically nothing and gives us nothing.

  2. I find it interesting that A&E chose to place him on “Hiatus” and not terminate him. Why? is there a time bomb in their contract that says if one of us gets fired we all get to leave? Remember A&E and the Robertsons have had problems over the Robertsons faith before.

  3. Almost like they were expecting a problem at some point isn’t it? A&E needs the Robertsons a lot more than the Robertsons need A&E. This could get real interesting.

  4. He wouldn’t have been bothered by the network if he’d said “I don’t get why Christians are all upset over someone preferring a man’s anus to a vagina.”

    It’s always “hate” speech if you make a factual comment that the Gay Mafia doesn’t like.

    Regular homosexuals don’t fall for this nonsense. It’s only the big agenda clowns that cause all the problems. Ordinary homosexuals know they are safer behind conservatives with guns than they are among the jihad-enabling, skin-color obsessed left.

    If he said he was in favor of homosexuality, wouldn’t THAT offend Muslims?

  14. The gay lobby just got its Christmas ooops I mean holiday present early this year. A few days to prance and preen their delicate little feelings about “H8ers” until the country gets bored and moves on. I wonder if gays have any clue how sick most of us are with their “issues” and drama.

  16. If the report I saw on another site is correct, they are not putting him on “hiatus” for the season they just finished producing and will be soon aired, but for the following season, so Phil will be in every episode as scripted in the coming season.

    By the time the next one rolls around, the Professionally Offended will be on to other, fresher outrages, and probably won’t even notice he never left.

    A&E gets to burnish their gay cred for free, without actually doing anything at all.

  20. I think A&E is glad to have an excuse. My belief is that they picked up Duck Dynasty to laugh at middle America. Bunch of southerners hunting and praying to God. What a hoot! But then it blew up. It’s getting huge ratings. They are terrified that mainstream values are a ratings juggernaut. And Hollywood always chooses ideology over profit. So they were just waiting for some outrage to dump the show.

  21. The new season starts in about a month. I assume that a number of episodes are already shot. Either A&E and Disney is planning on re-shoots or extensive editing, or we will be seeing Phil around awhile yet.That should drive some people crazy.

    I wonder if there is any thing in their contract to prevent the family from wearing outfits with Phil’s picture on them.

    What would A&E and Disney do if the rest of the family issued a statement stating that they were in general agreement with Phil’s statements?.
