If you wonder why Chris Hayes’ ratings are so low — he gets fewer viewers (622,000) at 8 p.m. ET than either Chris Matthews at 7 p.m. (798,000) or Rachel Maddow at 9 p.m. (712,000) — this one-minute video clip from Thursday may explain a lot:

HAYES: I was a little surprised, given how vile the comments are, given the very rapidly shifting norms about how people feel about love between people of the same gender, right? That the right-wingers sort of lined up so quickly behind him.
KIM: Yeah, and you know, I think one of the really funny things about the comments was just the sort of anatomical crudeness of them. Like he said the vagina is more desireable than the anus, and it’s sort of like, has he tried the anus? Because maybe if he did, he would like it more. If you’re going to reduce something as complex as human sexuality to which orifice is better …
HAYES: That’s a great follow-up question.

Suffice to say that prime-time discussions of anal sex with Richard Kim — whose expertise on the subject I’m sure we’re all willing to stipulate — probably aren’t helping MSNBC’s ratings.

  3. It does merit mention, though, that whatever you believe the origin of humans is — special Creation or evolution — at no point was the male reproductive organ ever meant to go into the orifice that expels putrid waste from the human body.

    Yeah, something so complex like the most profound dynamics of psychology – not reduce sexuality to some ignorant, simple-minded, ridiculous theory of a homosexual gene, where psychology, upbringing, ideology and culture play no role.

    Or, in other words:

    “We’ve all moved like a big, brainless flock of starlings, so why are there still people thinking what they used to think? What’s wrong with them that they don’t go along with the mob? It’s so scary that someone could still think the way people used to think five years in the past!”

  23. The gay rights movement is being moved along by 2 things: a very few judges, and people’s conditioning to give the judges’ opinions the same weight at duly constituted law.
    How many states have actually voted for gay marriage versus how many have had a judge tell them what to do?
    And so an elite few, selected only for their activism and not their jurisprudence, effect a coup.

  33. I sometimes wonder what would happen if science did isolate a “gay gene,” and pregnant Democratic women began having the test and aborting gay babies. The Democratic Convention could be interesting again!
