Sexual Disorientation

Caitlin Stasey (@caitlinstasey) is a 24-year-old Australian actress who became a child star at age 12 in a series called The Sleepover Club. Her smiling face, however, concealed a world of inner emotional turmoil. Growing up in a sex-obsessed society seems to be a profoundly frightening experience for many girls nowadays. The decline of marriage and the destruction of moral norms are part of a cultural syndrome that produces what I have called “a sort of social epidemic of bipolar hysteria, in which minds unmoored from cultural tradition constantly shift between utter confusion and radical certainty.”

Both confusion and certainty are evident in the account Ms. Stasey shares with readers at her new feminist site Herself.com:

I had an oddly dichotomous upbringing, my father an atheist, my mother agnostic & my education Catholic. I was sent to a Catholic school primarily because of class sizes. . . . After entering high school (also Catholic) I abandoned the notion of God in the Christian sense; I couldn’t reconcile the church’s stance on sexuality with my own views. I became incredibly hateful of religion & am now resolute that it is one of the greatest tragedies to befall mankind. . . .
My parents were incredibly thoughtful, attentive & loving but there was certainly no love lost between them. It felt as though every moment of peace was heavy with the anticipation of another fight between them. . . . [G]rowing up around that much resentment was incredibly stressful. I think I may be one of few children to feel relief upon hearing my parents were divorcing. My exact words, according to my mother, were “Good.” . . .
Puberty was devastating for me. I suddenly had stretch marks all over my body, cellulite, hair, lumps, acne. . . . I was embarrassed by the changes I was going through and I had no real outlet for my confusion but, more than anything, I was embarrassed by my interest in sex, one that was present in me LONG before puberty. . . .
I would have vivid dreams about other women. Every night I’d drift off into this utopia of women being available to me & knowing nothing other than my desire for them. There was no one in my life who also expressed these desires, no one in the entertainment I consumed, the books I would read, the company I kept. A lack of monumental events shaped my sexuality, masturbating in secret, telling no one, saying nothing, concealing all sexual queries or thoughts. . . .
I’ve known I was mostly gay ever since I can remember. I know it troubles many people for me to refer to myself as a lesbian considering I have a male partner. . . .

FULL STOP. Ms. Stasey is currently in a relationship with actor Lucas Neff, 29, recently notorious for his hatred of Republicans:

‘Guns kill people. Men murder women.’
Actor Lucas Neff’s anti-gun rant goes ‘beta’

‘Anti-choice’ ‘scumbag women’: Actor Lucas Neff
says more female GOPers don’t make party less sexist

So girls who grow up masturbating to lesbian fantasies are into guys like Lucas Neff. Go figure. Back to Ms. Stasey’s account:

My vagina has been an unending and constant source of turmoil for me — not that vaginas are intrinsically female, it’s just happened to be a big part of womanhood for me personally — [urinary tract infections], PH imbalances, sexual dysfunction, pain, discomfort. Sexual education is no way near comprehensive enough as all of these things I’ve had to learn myself, treat myself & diagnose myself. I’m still struggling to gain control over my body, over my vagina. . . .
Growing up in dueling worlds — Catholic & secular — my relationship to my sexuality was constantly in flux. I tried not to think about it unless I needed to masturbate. Instead of it being a part of me it felt like a weird compulsion I had to take care of every now and then and then try to forget about. I used to pray every time I touched myself and I would cry myself to sleep, fearful of the wrath of God, guilty for my sins etc. etc. . . .

FULL STOP. Notice that in the conflict between her “dueling worlds,” Ms. Stasey is certain that it’s the “wrath of God” part that’s wrong, rather than her own perverse compulsions. Because I’m not Catholic, I have no idea what Ms. Stasey was taught in her schools. Growing up Baptist, I learned that humans are naturally sinful and can only be saved through grace. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23-24). Furthermore, “we know that all things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28). Knowing this, through all my backsliding and wickedness and troubles, I never lost faith nor doubted the righteousness of God.

Excuse me for preaching, but some people can’t seem to get their minds around this concept of total human depravity and salvation by grace. Dude, back in the day I dealt dope in felony weight. I worked as a strip club DJ. I’ve seen total human depravity face-to-face, and have survived to tell you Jonathan Edwards was right: We are sinners in the hands of an angry God, deserving nothing but destruction, with no hope at all but grace. We can never deserve salvation by our own merit (“filthy rags” Isaiah 64:6) and thus can have no pride or self-righteousness. Yet despite our utter wretchedness, we are called to the service of the Lord of Heaven and Earth. “If God be for us, who can be against us?”

Well, Caitlin Stasey is certainly against us:

What is your political stance on women’s reproductive rights?
No one anywhere ever should EVER be able to tell a woman what is right for her body regarding her reproductive rights. If you’re pro life/anti contraceptive, swell, just keep it to your f–king self & practice it, don’t enforce it on others.
Are you pro life or pro choice?
Super duper pro pro pro SUPER PRO choice. I volunteer at a clinic that performs clinical abortions & escort patients to the waiting room from their cars, just to help them avoid harassment & so that they can see that they are supported.
What are your feelings about contraceptives? Their availability, cost, stigma, usage?
Contraceptives should be free, they should come in a wide variety pertaining to the needs of the individual & should be available on every f–king street corner.
What are your feelings on casual sex?
As long as it’s consensual, casual sex is an incredible tool to empower yourself with, help you learn your own body & its needs. Just BE SAFE.
Are you in a relationship(s)?
I am in a somewhat open relationship with the love of my life. We are not polyamorous but do not limit ourselves physically.
What are your feelings on marriage?
As an archaic institution it’s just awful, as a modern culture it’s even worse. The wedding industry is exploitative & gendered & drives the women who feel compelled to participate to madness. However, I’m an advocate of empowering women to do what THEY want & as long as they’re getting married because they TRULY believe it’s what THEY want & not what is expected OF them, then go for it. . . .
What are your feelings on monogamy?
It’s so pointless, painful & archaic. If it works for you and you genuinely find true contentment within monogamy then by all means endure it, but the fact that it’s the status quo is truly discriminative.

You can read the whole thing, which is illustrated with naked photos of Caitlyn Stasey, but I’m sure no Christian would be tempted to sinful lust for her after reading the hideous madness that pours forth from her disordered mind full of “vile affections” (Romans 1:26).

In my studies of radical feminism for the “Sex Trouble” series, I’ve noticed that this combination of personal confusion and political certainty is so common as to be typical. Kate Millett, Andrea Dworkin, Joyce Trebilcot, Laurie Penny — these are all “broken people,” as Professor Reynolds said, sharing the radical conviction that those of us who are normal, sane and happy are the real problem in the world.

  1. Ever notice that the left’s problems with Catholicism are always about screwing? It’s never about charity, metaphysics, freedom. It all boils down to, you have to be OK with me killing the children I conceive while having fun or fagging around or else I reject God and Christ.

  2. But, it isn’t reformed in the same way. And Not many Protestants stopped at the Reformation, but started moving back past Augustine, who is the source of many aberrant ideas that ended up being imported into Christianity.

  3. If that’s her pic at the head of the article, then I would have to strongly disagree about the pretty part. Given what she has said, however, she does not have the spirit an attractive woman would have, and so the entire package comes across as being ugly as original sin.
A woman doesn’t have to be all that pretty to be attractive.

  4. I get that, but what Catholics find “amusing” (in a face palm way) is how some Baptists don’t think they are Christians, misunderstand biblical justification of the Mass and don’t even get us started on the papacy…

But those differences aside, Catholics and Protestants don’t go bombing market places over this any more. Even the relevantly recent “troubles” in Northern Ireland and GB were not really about religion but about political power and culture.

  5. Old joke:

A woman with a very impressive chest goes to a doctor and asks for breast reduction surgery.

The doctor says, “OK, but I’ll have to numb them first.”
    She replies, “Of course.”

So the doctor drops his head into her cleavage and goes, “Num num num num num…”

  6. “No one anywhere ever should EVER be able to tell a woman what is right for her body regarding her reproductive rights. If you’re pro life/anti contraceptive, swell, just keep it to your f–king self & practice it, don’t enforce it on others.”
But EVERYBODY should listen to what she has to say about it, right?
    Silly little cow.

  7. She said, “Some people think they can decide what gender you are by how you look.”

Um no, we decide by what chromosomes you have. Now shut up, foolish girl, before you make all women look like idiots.

  8. Not only listen, but then her views should be enforced on everybody.

She thinks that zero morality should be the default because she sets her personal bar at ground-level.

  9. […] Here he comes up with the horror story of a very sexually, morally and spiritually confused young la…, a girl really, only of note because she is an actress. The witches brew of false teaching and lack of love she has suffered is probably beyond really knowing, but her parents were probably no picnic. I thought that Catholics, particularly those running schools, had chilled a bit by now but it sounds like she got a big dose of the “sex is evil” thing, or maybe it just wasn’t sex-positive enough for her. I’ll go with the former, though, since I grew up around people who were strongly left-wing in every way except about sex. […]

  10. “Because I’m not Catholic, I have no idea what Ms. Stasey was taught in her schools.”

I went to Catholic school for 12 years and the teaching on sin and damnation was light to nonexistent. While I value the education I received highly, the religious component was generally limited to one class per semester and monthly Mass with “be nice to each other” type of sermons. Granted, this was in a fairly liberal Chicago suburb, but I can’t imagine Australia would be much more conservative. This sounds like the kind of imagined victimization often seen with LGBT and feminist types.

  11. Yet, those are the same sort of people bitching and kvetching about how we don’t do enough for public schools. That bitch about circulum of a school because they mention things like how creationism was first thought of then evolved to evolution theory or that the Galileo story actually went down. The classic do as I say not as I do and that I can make decisions for you because you are too stupid to understand education.

  12. The Culture of Narcissism cannot be reconciled with moral norms, only abstractions about Equality, Diversity, Progress and Rights.

  13. It blows my mind. In her world, we’re so powerful that merely admiring a positive trait in a woman is an act of aggression that taints her. I get why she’s with a guy — it’s like why a cynic would vote for Cthulu, instead of settling for the lesser evil — but how much self-loathing must she have?!

  14. Perhaps initially. They stop bitching when they see the kids at our school have average ACT scores of 29.

    Even with all the creationism.

  15. I’ve actually decided to come out to my PC friends as a nontransitioning-trans-lesbian. AKA I’m still a dude and like women, but I’m a hardcore dyke. The reactions are going to be fun 😀

  16. Calm yourself. It’s not effing empowered, just empowered. Your blowing things all out of proportion.

  17. Is it really self-loathing, do you think, or is it an inability to think rationally and logically? Or did an inability to think rationally spawn the self-loathing?

  18. Not only does your type want us to shut up about it, you want us to pay for it too. On that I get a vote too, and mine is NO!
If you morons would simply do what you want and shut up about it, there wouldn’t be anyone riding your idiots about it.

  19. I went to Catholic school from grade 8 through 12, and for me too, the religious component was minimal. We had one class called “Religion”(which I have to say was one of my favorite classes, and with some of the best discussions)and an occasional trip to the school chapel for mass. With that being said though, the issues of contraception and abortion were definitely a part of the environment, and if you came down on the “wrong” side of them (which I did being pro-choice, for making the pill readily available, and using contraception in general)I can see how she might have felt alienated, and wound up rebelling.

  20. “…I fear that our philosophical heritage and its benefits will never again be seen.”

I believe, prophetically speaking, that is the case, more’s the pity for us all.

  21. I wouldn’t go so far as to say she has “zero mortality”, she just has what you would describe as a very loose morality around issues of sexuality. I doubt she’s ever sexually assaulted anyone, or hurt a child though, and if what she does is with other adults, then who is to judge?

  22. I’m not in the weeds. I’m part of that argument, and I’m well informed on the Roman Catholic/Protestant divide. You may think it’s face palm worthy, but the Roman Catholic position on justification is not found in scripture. The RCC position on the Papacy is simply silly, not to put too fine a point on it. Given what I know, I’m genuinely scared for the sincere Roman Catholic that thinks they get salvation through the RCC, or anyone that thinks they get it through their organization.

I agree with your second paragraph. It goes back to the 30 years war, with the majority Catholic area of Ireland not wanting to be ruled by Semi-Protestant Brits. They can thank the Papacy for their conflicts, however.

  23. Aren’t these the kinds of statements made in a pub after drinking waaaay too much and then saying, “I love you guys!…no, really…”?

  24. Yeah, we’re approaching the end of man’s regime as he more and more turns himself over to evil. The future is bright, however, because Christ will return to rule and set things right before the final end and judgment.
With the Apostle John I say, “Even so come, Lord Jesus!”

  25. Rebelling, fine. That’s fairly natural. Rebellion though usually has more joie de vivre about it. The rhetoric here though is turned several notches past rebellion into bitter, paranoid martyr complex levels.

  26. I’d bet a dollar to a donut that if you were able to examine here she would have zero morality on the matter of sex. The rest of her morality would be wounded as a result of the splash from that as morality is not an isolated thing.

  27. I agree completely. She has gone beyond a fair challenge to the status quo, and now holds the same paranoid, bitter worldview of your average extremist cult member. She’s also completely full of crap. Her website is loaded with naked female flesh, which is definitely being used as a selling point, but in her mind because she’s a feminist it’s not objectification, or titillating. I would like to ask her if she would still feel that way if a man took the pictures, and conducted the interview? Amusing she also holds up porn star Casey Calvert as an “empowered feminist”. She’s your typical pretty feminist media whore who whines about “patriarchy” and then collects on all the benefits of this supposed system.

  28. “…so powerful…”
And yet, so weak that merely complaining about it can end “The Patriarchal Oppression”!
There are many symptoms that present from the wold?view she’s adopted— which, btw, she obviously feels she invented and that the aforementioned world?view, along w/the “insights” that it provides, is as uniquely her’s as her fingerprints… actually being as old as civilization (even though wrapped differently).
She’s selfish, and self?centered to the point where she’s the center of the universe.
A good example of this is her substitution of her moral codes for Heavenly Father’s. Where the two are at odds she doesn’t consider that hers might be based on error or transitory weakness: it is God’s Law that is wrong, and so she dumps His Law. She doesn’t consider that the more/harder you work at/for something, the greater the appreciation and joy derived thereby!
That true whether you’re talking about material wealth/things, self?control, work, relationships, carnal?relations, rearing children … indeed, any and all aspects of life are sweetened by the efforts sacrificed to aquire them!
Conversely, things easily aquired, performed, or carelessly given are esteemed lightly.
Halfway through Grampa Grumpus’s cancer, he became unable to urinate w/o catheterization: on “good days” he could void only a quarter of his bladder, on bad days, only a few cc.s at a time. Once he was asked how he could stand to catheter himself— an obviously painful process.
He replied that it wasn’t too bad; and he certainly appreciated a completely empty bladder, and indeed, deeply missed all of the normal functions of his body… and regretted taking for granted the simple act of urinating.
Another example: I waited until after I was married to have carnal?relations, I am grateful for her sharing with me of my wife’s beautiful body and spirit (both of which together, of course, comprise her soul). Her allowing me and no one else this intimacy shows a special variety of love and trust that literally impells me to reciprocate. I’ve recieved many offers, but never really felt tempted, to break trust with my wife during the 41+ years of our marriage. Even if I had felt strongly tempted, how could I show such disrespect to someone who had granted me that level of trust? It’s unthinkable!
And, knowing we have that level of trust and respect for each other warms my spirit. I’ve found that because of that warmth I be more than I imagined. I’ve found I’m never really afraid. And many more things, too.
OTOH, someone who esteems the gift of physical intimacy lightly— giving it away as if worthless, parading it around as if it’s a joke, or throwing it around like soiled laundry — giving it away like they do business cards makes it commonplace and worth nothing.
These people will never feel that warmth or know that fire.
I truly pity them. As my spirit brothers and sisters, related through God, our Heavenly Father, I feel great sadness for them… even unto weeping at their self?inflicted plight.

  29. Let’s think about this:

    1. I was reading at college level by the time I was in fifth grade.
    2. By the time I was in 7th grade, i was into some pretty serious rebelling.
    3. By the time I was a sophomore in high school, I was dealing dope.
    4. HOWEVER, there was not Internet back then — I never accessed the Internet until I was 35 — so I couldn’t just go online and show my arrogant superiority to the entire world with no editorial filter on my juvenile arrogance.

Youthful rebellion now has a worldwide public platform it did not have when I was a teenager.

  30. I’m reminded strongly of The Offspring song _She’s Got Issues_:

I’m seeing this girl and she just might be out of her mind
Well she’s got baggage and it’s all the emotional kind
She talks about closure and that validation bit
I don’t mean to be insensitive, but I really hate that shit

    …

Now I know she’ll feel abandoned
If I don’t stay over late
And I know she’s afraid to commit
But it’s only our second date

    Oh man she’s got issues
    And I’m gonna pay
    She says she’s the victim
But she takes it all out on me

    I don’t know why you’re messed up
I don’t know why your whole life is a chore
    Just do me a favor
And check your baggage at the door

The video for the song as it turns out has Zooey Deschanel, years before most people knew who she was:

  31. I keep telling people this!

Teenagers have always been narcissistic and dumb. But their ability to get approval and reinforcement had previously been very limited.

  32. Pretty much EVERY law is a law on our bodies.

You can’t drive 100 MPH: that’s a law telling you what you can and can’t do with your body.

You can’t break into someone else’s house: that’s a law telling you what you can and can’t do with your body.

You can’t masturbate in the park: that’s a law telling you what you can and can’t do with your body.

  33. I felt mostly sorry for her. She’s crazy, and not in a sort-of-funny-like-Joe-Biden sort of way, either. This really got me:

I am in a somewhat open relationship with the love of my life. We are not polyamorous but do not limit ourselves physically.

Perhaps I’m wrong, but this says to me that she’s desperately clinging to this Neff character, so desperately that she’s agreed to have an “open” relationship. He must be loving it. And, when he’s tired of the crazy, he’ll dump her, adding another body blow to a self-image that is already clearly on life support.

I suppose that it’s possible to separate casual sex from “the love of one’s life”, to go out and hit everything that catches one’s fancy and still be totally faithful (in one’s heart) to that One Special Someone, but I’m not really sure how it works. Indeed, I would like to try to explain to this poor lunatic that the monogamy that she decries as “pointless, painful & archaic” is a great boon especially to women, elevating them from a c*ck holster for any man who comes along to a person who is to be cared for if not outright cherished.

  34. Now that you’ve threatened me with a Beer Summit, I’ve been deeply offended and must do my dooty and slit your throat. Nothing personal, however.

  35. It’s even worse than that: she came out and said she’s really a lesbian, and predominantly attracted to women, but for whatever reason she’s pursuing a relationship with a man. I would have to ask just what in the hell is wrong with him, too? Her “polyamory” is just a way for her to have her cake, and eat it, just like every other bisexual. She get’s to be in a socially acceptable, secure, protective relationship with a man, and fool around with women on the side to meet her sexual needs. Ironically she condemns this thing called “patriarchy”, but can’t even stand up for her so called convictions. In the end, she’s a an intellectually shallow, and phony actress.
