Feminists Chase ‘Avengers’ Director Off Twitter, Because … Gender Theory?

Let me explain something up front: Hollywood blockbusters are not made by conforming to people’s pet political theories. The target audience is 12-year-olds who want to see a lot of explosions and chase scenes and stuff like that. Yet the bottom-line calculations of box-office profit mean nothing to feminists:

Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon is officially off the grid, having quit Twitter today (May 4).
The filmmaker signed off from the social media service with two final messages to his 1.15 million followers. . . .
Whedon has been criticized by some Avengers fans and critics for using Scarlett Johansson’s international spy Black Widow in a typical ‘damsel in distress’ role in a few key scenes late in Age of Ultron.

OMG, a female character getting rescued by a male hero? Oh, we can’t have that kind of stuff in movies in 2015! We must critique the social construction of the gender binary within the heterosexual matrix!

No more studio executives and producers and directors — no, this capitalist structure of movie production must be replaced by a system that guarantees social justice! The era of white cis male heteropatriarchal movie-making is over! Henceforth, every script will be created by a committee of Women’s Studies majors under the supervision of Judith Butler, Sally Kohn and Anita Sarkeesian, and all characters must be either lesbian, genderqueer or oppressed minorities from the Third World, preferably disabled or, at least, neuroatypical.

Your next super-hero blockbuster will be about an undocumented Guatemalan paraplegic bisexual with a harelip and chronic depression.

And the 12-year-olds are going to like it, or else.

  1. New-Deal-product Steve Rogers is a good liberal, yes. The writers like to hear their favorite knee-jerk platitudes come out of Cap’s mouth.

The were other, inauthentic Captain America replacements. The delusional 1950’s Cap who was put into suspended animation for crimes that are clearly intended to tie him to the Red Scare; and late 1980’s Cap John Walker the former Superpatriot went all Charles Bronson Death Wish Bernie Goetze and started killing his foes

  2. Well, and feminists couldn’t give a damn about the difficulties women face with pregnancy and raising kids, because those of us who choose to be homemakers are gender traitors.

  3. You can call me mean and petty, but I enjoy it when Hollywood types are eaten by the monsters they created. Cant wait till the eco-nuts start seriously campaigning against private air travel.
    Hollywood, you built that!

  4. Right, because the feminist SJWs who have appointed themselves your spokespeople can’t relate to breeders like you. Such gargantuan ingratitude on your part…

This thread is really triggering the comic book geek in me, BTW. I gotta get it out.

Have you seen Wonder Woman lately? She doesn’t carry a magic lasso anymore, apparently.

Nope. She’s packing a big ol’ sword.

    Such garden-variety isssues.

  5. Well, to be fair, Wonder Woman was conceived by a nutjob sexual pervert to make men comfortable with being dominated by women. So, while versions of the character have been alright, she comes pre-ruined.

Might be an interesting RSM post someday, actually.

  6. They’ve really been pushing the warrior aspect lately, as though there ever were such a thing as a female warrior in all of history. It’s a laughable concept.

Plus having a sword doesn’t even make sense; WW’s better aspects were about compassion and truth, hence the lasso (non-lethal weapon that compels truthfulness, though of course there’s the whole bondage thing I won’t get into). It’s like Wolverine’s claws — what good is it? Either she never hits anyone with it and comes across as incompetent, or she does and becomes a killer. Either way, not a very good hero. At least Wolverine has the excuse of being kind of an anti-hero.

  7. Thor is no longer worthy of his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, and has been replaced by a chick.

And an enfeebled Steve Rogers reverted to his true physical age (in his 90s I would guess) and was replaced by his black side-kick, the Falcon.

  8. And Patton Oswalt is actually blaming “Tea Party” conservatives for driving poor Joss from Twitter.

  9. Power, not results.

And that’s why they make such grand campaigns out of nothing. With no metrics to measure success or even progress, the fight never ends.

  10. The more Whedon runs his mouth, the more I suspect that he thought The Alliance were the good guys.

  11. I thought The Hulk represented the destruction wrought by rampant capitalism?

You know, being green and all?

  12. The Hulk was originally gray. The publisher changed him to green shortly after his introduction due to difficulties with consistently reproducing the right grey color.

The Hulk is not a hero, he is an engine of destruction. “The madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets” is an allusion to logic of Mutually Assured Destruction and the Cold War arms race.

After the end of the Cold War, Hulk lost his original significance. In the late 80s and early 90s writer Peter David went the toxic masculinity route and made Banner a victim of domestic abuse by his father and MPD. Weak sauce, pointless psychologizing.

  13. And what was she going to do? Fight Ultron? She of no particular super powers (at least in the movies) against an Army of super robots? The probably think she’d outfight Thor or something.

Though they ignore that she was pivotal in Hawkeye figuring out Ultron’s location and where he was hiding.

  14. You got a problem with a 10th Realm on the WorldTree populated by stripper angels?

And Cap will be back. They’ve pulled this crap before.

  15. Of course! We can do anything, The Brits are still freaking out about how we finagled the name of their new Royal Baby.

  16. They misinterpreted her being sterile as being a monster. She felt she was a monster because she was raised to be a heartless assassin her being sterile made her and Banner alike.

Feminists are a remarkably stupid bunch.

  17. He’s laughing all the way to the bank, but the feminazis ruined the Twitter experience for him. Good! The more big name liberals who run afoul of the feverishly imagined slights perceived by the SJW crowd, the faster their aberrant nonsense will be once more relegated to a few screeching scrunts on some Frisco street corner.

  18. Don’t give SPLC too much credit. What you see is collateral damage.

Their sole and entire purpose is to raise money for Dees to control. For most of its history, he’s the only one drawing a serious salary, they rarely do any legal work at all. Dees won a verdict against the money held by one of the last Klan groups, but he was late to the fight, there never was any significant comeback for them.

That didn’t stop him from issuing press releases to coincide with his fundraising appeals – mainly to wealthy urban/suburban white liberals who never asked too many details about how their money was spent. That’s why they constantly seek new boogey-men, even the rich white marks figured out there hadn’t been a Klan in a while. They went to every tiny group not on the left, and accused them of something. Didn’t matter, they weren’t going to do anything about it anyway, just raise money.

SPLC is and always has been Morris Dees’ personal scam, his piggy bank. Any other effect from its activities is purely incidental.

  19. Whedon is a feminist himself, his children carry his wife’s sur not his. He’s a big supporter of gay rights as well. So I think you missed the larger story that was he could never do enough to satisfy the radical left simply because he was a man.

Thanks for the concise summary. Another “male feminist” has proven that there is really no point in being a “male feminist.”

  20. This sort of nonsense has created a condition within the SF and fantasy genres such that the traditionally masculine hero-protagonist is now an endangered species. Heinlein’s probably spinning in his grave fast enough to power all of Los Angeles.

  21. Gray, huh? You mean, like the side of the paper money opposite the green one?

Ha, I’ve run rings around you logically!

Actually, what you say about Hulk and MAD is interesting, I never heard that before but I’m not up on comic book origin stories.

  22. True, though I suspect that he’s had a few hot baths since this started…

Also, when it comes to Hollywood, it’s a fantasy mill. I never believe anything about a person who has a publicist. As far as I know, Joss Whedon is a construct like the Mandarin from Iron Man 3 (AKA, the {mostly} live action version of The Incredibles).

…and right on cue a person sporting a tie-dye dress, birkenstocks and a full beard just walked by…what was I blathering?

  23. Every year SPLC warns us that there are more right wing hate groups than ever. So far they fail to show themseleves, even though we must be up to our armpits in right wing terrorists.

Kind of like the continually rising sea levels due to AGW, which are going to swallow entire coastlines… aaaaaaany minute now… stand by… wait for it… here it comes…

  24. I suspect the boyfriend role may be written in such a way that he more closely resembles a pet…

  25. Well, when you keep expanding the definition, it seems logical that you would find more.

  26. After the soviets went out of business and the cold war threat of nuclear annihilation receeded, the link between the Hulks rage and his strength was severed.

Banner psyche gained control over the Hulk’s power for a time, then the Hulk’s psyche fractured into three then reintegrated into a new gestalt. At one point, this new “Professor Hulk” would actually revert to Banner when enraged.

The Hulk as originally written is a rageful monster who occasionally and often inadvertantly saves humanity from the designs of evil forces through indiscriminant mindless destruction. He’s like a necessary evil and a threat with which we learn to live.

  27. I admit, that IS a fairly clever idea. God knows everything else comes out of vending machines nowadays.

  28. The stupid irony is that these feminists in SFF call for more sexually and racially diverse voices with the presumed intention of more actual diversity of ideas. However the truth is that any artistic expression scrimmed through a feminist lens is going to undergo a severe type of censorship no different in principle than the Comics Code or the Hayes Office of censorship for films until the late ’60s. There are depictions feminists simply will not allow. They have stated over and over again the Golden Age of SF does not pass muster and that they will not read it and would not publish it today.

  29. I feel like the Jews that liked to read the Nazi agitprop simply because it told them how much power they supposedly had.

  30. Heh, I remember before the previous royal baby, some clueless fools were saying the kid should be named Trayvon. My thought at the time was that it was much more likely the kid would be named George, and I was right!

  31. Patton Oswalt is nothing but a shiat-stain – he knows damn well that this Whedon clusterfudge is a wholly left-owned operation, but he has to desperately attribute some “Tea Party” or right wing connotation to it. Pathetic. Same as when Chris Rock said colleges are too “conservative” these days for comedians to perform there. He meant to say “totalitarian”, in the same way the SJWs were re “Avengers.”

And Whedon is a high-ranking Mangina of long standing, making his recent cannibalization simply quality schadenfreude. Made even more fattening by the fact he was just recently criticized the new “Jurassic World” movie for being sexist.

  32. I saw that. He was actually blaming the progressive equivalent of the “Tea Party,” but it was a false equivalence. Well, I suppose that Social Justice Wankers are equivalent to the liberal media’s false narrative about the Tea Party, so within his echo chamber it made sense.

He should’ve just said SJWs, but he might’ve seen how even Andrew Sullivan — no doyen of political correctness — was pressured into stopping his use of that term only a couple of posts after discovering it.

  33. Yep. Set up vending machines full of drugs on street corners in the 3rd World. Then whip out your stopwatch and count the seconds until they are 1) destroyed 2)stolen 3) held hostage by whatever faction has enough rusty Ak-47’s or machetes to control access to them, and//or 4) surrounded by dead children because their parents CAN’T READ THE DAMNED INSTRUCTIONS AND OVERDOSE THEM!

  34. Soon, our numbers will be enough, and I will blow the Seekrit Tea Party Dog Whistle and every one of our followers will turn sharply to the left and summarily execute the proglodyte standing next to them with our scary black rifles with the high-capabiity magazine clip and the thing that goes up.

Please note this wlll be the ONLY TIME they are ever permitted to turn left.

  35. The problem is that *people* need rescuing sometimes. “Story” demands that in order to triumph, one must have set backs to triumph over. And then there is the movie progression moment of “black night of the soul” and “all is lost.” It has to happen. So any actual *character* in the story has this moment where they despair, where they seem to have given up, where they seem to have lost, where it just can’t be going to end well…. and then the reach inside them for that last shred of strength and somehow prevail. It’s just as formulaic as it sounds but consider the alternative. It doesn’t matter if it’s a non-powered female hero or Superman… it’s why kryptonite exists.

But the idiots want female super heroes without kryptonite. They’ll say they don’t, but they keep pointing and shrieking, “bad! you gave her a weak moment, you sexist neanderthal!”

Note… these harridans are not writing scripts or novels.

  36. Well when you put it that way, I can’t even picture it working right in Baltimore, let alone a 3rd World city.

  37. Forward!

Sounds like MSNBC’s slogan….FORWARD!….it sounds inspiring while marching headlong into complete and utter oblivion.
