University of Missouri football players are threatening a boycott until university president Tim Wolfe resigns, but considering the way they’ve been playing this season (4-5 overall, 1-5 in the Southeastern Conference), it’s not as if this will have any impact on the SEC title picture. Alabama beat LSU Saturday, so Derrick Henry and the Crimson Tide defense are far more important, from a purely athletic perspective, than the racial acrimony roiling the Missouri campus.
Exactly what is happening at Missouri? Well, of course, the proximity to Ferguson — scene of the Michael Brown shooting that sparked what has become the #BlackLivesMatter protest movement — could be seen as a relevant factor. However, the real trouble campus has been agitated by a graduate student named Jonathan Butler:
Butler . . . wants to force Wolfe’s resignation because of a handful of recent incidents which have occurred on the Columbia, Mo. campus.
In a letter to school officials posted on his Facebook page, Butler indicated that he began his hunger strike because someone in a pickup truck allegedly shouted a racist insult at a black student government member, because state law prevents Planned Parenthood from performing on-campus abortions and because someone drew a swastika with human feces in a dormitory bathroom.
Some observers have suggested that the bathroom swastika may be a hoax. Why, law professor blogger Ann Althouse has asked, for example, would any dedicated racial supremacist create a swastika out of human feces?
Butler admits in the letter that none of the incidents he cites are Wolfe’s fault. Nevertheless, Butler has concluded, “as a collection of incidents at the university, they are his responsibility to address.”
This summer, prior to Butler’s decision to go on a hunger strike because of racism allegations, the graduate student’s substantially different agenda focused on a change in University of Missouri policy which ended subsidized health insurance for graduate students. . . .
School officials have said the Affordable Care Act — Obamacare — forced them to stop subsidizing grad student health insurance.
Who is to blame for the #Missouri protest by Jonathan Butler? OBAMA, that's who. https://t.co/J8pcgnHw4Q #tcot pic.twitter.com/NsnACJMZnb

So, basically, this is Obama’s fault. It figures. Meanwhile, in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide refuses to be distracted. Arkansas upset Ole Miss on Saturday, thus making it possible for Alabama to hope for a shot at the SEC title, but Tide linebacker Reggie Ragland was so focused on beating LSU that he didn’t even know about the Arkansas game until a reporter told him after ‘Bama had beat the Tigers 30-16:
“So we hold our own destiny,” Ragland said, laughing. Then he turned stone-faced again. “That still really don’t mean nothing. We’ve got to keep playing ball,” he said. “We’ve still got two games left in the West to finish off. We’ve still got to do our job. We’ve got a great opponent in Dak Prescott and [Mississippi State] next week.”
Damn right. You hold your own destiny. One game at a time.
You know what really matters in life? Winning. #CrimsonTideMattters #RollTide pic.twitter.com/PvzFe1Vc6K

…Racism, excuse to loose football games…LOL!
That would an excuse to LOSE football games.
I would think appointing a Provost Marshall at most colleges and Universities would be appropriate since we seem to be arriving at a point where martial law would be appropriate on most campuses ruled by SJWs.
…thanks, corrected……mtc.
It really doesn’t have anything to do with me. Under what authority? By what moral standards?
I will submit to you that all boundaries are arbitrary. The whole point is enforcement. If you can’t enforce a boundary, it disappears. (See all of recorded history.) That doesn’t mean that I want to eliminate the boundaries just because those in other neighborhoods want to come in and take my hard work and give it to those that would rather sit around all day and smoke weed and then run all night doing who knows what.
I have some imaginary responsibility for such behavior? I think not. That doesn’t make me a prick. It makes me reasonable. When you don’t assign responsibility where it is due, instead to some omnipresent, indefinable “we” then those who should be responsible ignore their responsibility and it is placed solely on those that were going to perform the act anyway. In this way, you punish virtue and you punish merit. We all get dragged down into the mud.
This mock, self-righteous umbrage at those that just want to work and raise their families and not have to shoulder the entire responsibility for a society that does not want to be dragged out of the mud. You meliorists (Can’t you just say bleeding heart progressives?) use this false social responsibility to push higher taxes and concentrated power so you can consolidate and force your greedy zero sum policies on bigger and bigger circles of power. You make this false gesture towards building a better society, but it keeps getting crushed under your greedy little boots.
Law enforcement is currently a public good. It was not always a public good. It does not have to be a public good. Your argument is based (as every liberal argument) on false premise.
I am not obligated nor responsible to support sharing taxes with other cities, municipalities, counties, states, nations. There is no such moral code. What you are defining is theft from those that would to give to those that would not. Stop putting out the food and watch the strays move on to other areas. When they get sick of sifting through the garbage, they’ll eventually get up and go find something productive to do to feed themselves.
You can’t be held responsible for people that will not be responsible for themselves. The only situation where that is acceptable is children. And adults being treated like children is the very definition of slavery.
I’ve read the comments here and like to think I have a good general idea of what the “regulars” are all about.
Stoops the Younger seems to be bringing them along nicely, though.
It really doesn’t have anything to do with me. Under what authority? By what moral standards?
You may want to get off this train before you go hurtling over the cliff. The line of reasoning you’re offering does not sustain your preferred policy outcome. It discredits public police forces tout court. If what’s going on in a neighborhood a 10 minute drive from your house has nothing to do with you, what’s going on four blocks down the road doesn’t have much to do with you either. If you wish to live in a world where public order maintenance is every man for himself, go ahead. I don’t think Lebanon in 1980 was a great place to live.
You can’t be held responsible for people that will not be responsible for themselves.
Please try to concentrate. It’s law enforcement we’re talking about. That’s a public good. We’re not talking about someone’s dealings with their employer or their landlord or the supermarket or the gas and electric. Neither are we talking about a realm where the costs and benefits of people’s behavior are strictly aligned. Lots of perfectly ordinary people live in slums. They do not create the problems going on around them. They are just attempting to cope with them.
Well, you said it. What’s going on four blocks from me really doesn’t have that much to do with me. Even more so in urban areas where the population is more densely packed. The reverse, if what’s going on ten minutes from you is in your direct circle of influence, why not what’s going on 3000 miles away.
Law enforcement and its support are directly affected by the super market, the landlords, the employers, because those are the people that pay for them. If they don’t like the service they get, they leave, taking their tax base with them. Then the people that aren’t being supported by them anymore will also leave. When you float money from successful neighborhoods into corrupt, non-productive neighborhoods, you both steal from the former neighborhood and prolong the inevitable with the latter.
As individuals, you are correct. There may be individual decent people who are trying to get by and live their lives in these neighborhoods. However if the overall effect is rottenness, it’s just going to spread. Stop supporting it. Then people will move or push their children to move. It’s a natural process. Necessity is the mother of invention. Stop taking away their reason to improve.
Right now, the ACC has the top football team in the country. Go Clemson Tigers!
Wait until they play ‘Bama. Clemson might beat South Carolina or Missouri or [sob!] UK in the SEC, but if they were in the conference, they’d wind up with three losses.
Mr Burton asked, “What is the U to do, track down every last racist?” If the university did that, what course of action could they take? Could they simply expel all students deemed to be racist, if said students had not committed a racist act? Can their thoughts be punished?
I, on the other hand, am never surprised by the stupidity of the left. The more edumacated they are, the dumber they are.
These people never ask themselves the most blatantly obvious questions. If this is such a white supremacy why doesn’t this supremacy simply flex its muscles? Why would a “supremacy” need to act from the shadows and produce such rare and anecdotal anomalies? Why would a supremacy enact The Northwest Ordinance, The Emancipation Proclamation, The Civil Rights Act? These agitators are ascribing the most base motivations to the most beneficent acts. It’s a frickin’ upside-down world of stupid. No surprise that in a half-century these people keep spinning their wheels to nowhere despite quotas and billions of dollars thrown at them by way of crutches. Meanwhile Jews create Israel 3 years after WW II with the help of no one and in far worse conditions of REAL adversity, not this fake bullshit.
Real headline: Local Klan ousts university president.
Derrick Henry is a f*ckin’ beast.
Well, “Bama better win out the rest of the year or it won’t happen this year.
Clemson has beat every team in the SEC, although some of them were ancient history…like a 100 years ago.
I do believe they would beat the Tide this go round if they were to meet..
By the way, the ACC is the best basketball conference.
ETA With the exception of Clemson…their basketball program perennially sucks, although we do beat Duke on occasion.
A couple people utter racial slurs and con artists want over 25,000 white students to be taught not to be racists. Feminists run the same con: a tiny minority of men are rapists and feminists want “men” to be taught not to rape. By this logic black Americans should take sensitivity training not to commit crimes. The fact that will never happen tells you the exact nature of the con game and who is pushing it: black and female supremacist bigots. And since whites and men propose no such things, it also tells you they are not the problem and what liars third wave feminists are.
Send him a pizza with Alfredo sauce.
Dude, if I had the money and I’d known, I’d have ordered about 30 pizzas and sent them to all his little protester friends.
What’s going on four blocks from me really doesn’t have that much to do with me.
You fancy you’re Leatherstocking. You’re not.
Well, that’s one way to ignore what I wrote.
Only in a world where you really believe that you have a say in what your neighbors do on their property does what goes on four blocks away directly affect my life. I don’t believe those things. I don’t act on those things. Put a little private back in property and the world gets a whole lot clearer.
Well, that’s one way to ignore what I wrote.
Most of what you wrote is pointless verbiage. The rest is your illusion about yourself and the world you live in.
I have started “Potatoes for Peace.” Please throw generously and with great force.
I’d bet dollars to donuts neither of the two racial incidents happened. One hundred percent of the “racial incidents” if he last few years have been hoaxes perpetrated by the supposed activist screeching about them.
Quite
”That is a thoroughly white, ableist and cisheteronormativist concept”
Damn right it is.
They can and often are.
You mean kind of like this?
The Provost was who I used to b1tch to about stuff in college. Of course, 100% of the time I was b1tching about the incompetency of the faculty, so maybe that was why.
Yepeprs! He fed the SJW beast.
Potato guns are easy and cheap to build.
It’s not about a seat at the table with everyone else. It’s about taking the table away from everyone else.
Certainly not! If you expelled the racists there would be very few blacks and Hispanics left on campus.
You left out the Patriarchy! I firmly, energetically, and loudly denounce you!
Dana is a regular irregular as are many of regulars. Hope that’s not too Byzantine.
They were OK with freeing the slaves as long as they stayed south afterwards.
IIRC, the Provost is the Chief Academic Officer.
I remember the old Southwestern Conference. I think Texas A&M along with Arkansas and Texas were part of it, if memory serves. I haven’t kept up with The NFL farm teams since the early 70s when Royal was head coach at Texas. and have no idea what happened to the conference.
Both of you make good points. Some places have merged suburbs with the inner city via metropolitan governments (Nashville, TN did it in the early 60s), and some improvements can be made by doing so. What happened, however, was growth was pushed into the suburbs and bedroom towns of surrounding counties. Nashville’s taxes went through the roof in comparison to what they had been, and that pushed even more people out. Metro Nashville kept growing, but much slower than it had, with much of the growth going to places like Hendersonville, Dickson, gallatin, Mount Juliet, Murfreesboro and Lebanon. Exurban growth also skyrocketed.
All the while, Metro Nashville crime rose, and even moved out into the old areas of Davidson County because the County Sheriff actually did a better job than the current Metro Police.
What you are proposing carries its own problems, some of which are worse than the old problems. Local accountability is still the way to go, and enlarging jurisdictions is going in the wrong direction.
I think you need to put aside some of your conceit. I understood what he was saying, and it wasn’t pointless. It simply didn’t mesh with what you propose.
Not really. Minnesota had anti-Jim Crow laws in the 19th century. The U of MN football team had a star black player in 1905. The MS Rebels at Oxford didn’t segregate their football team until forced to in 1972.
There’s something about this event that smacks of an operation rather than a random reaction to a set of events. If it is, it is an extortion scam which targeted the Mizzou football team, even getting a recruit to Tweet he would not be going to Mizzou.
Colleges across America are going to suddenly be made aware of how vulnerable they are to such scams, seeing the millions of dollars which are at stake in basketball and football. It’s a neat scam; a Mafia which controls the neighborhood so to speak. The spice must flow and it’s a question of who ultimately controls the spice and who must be placated and kowtowed to.
Given today’s atmosphere and how the open collusion on social media to hurt the school is pretty normal, it would be pretty hard to catch someone running such a racket. It’s not like anyone was hiding their intentions. They openly stated their intent to hurt the school, their demands, and then just as openly stated the means by which they would extort those demands.
The solution of course won’t be to pay the players because then unionizing will come into it. The only solution is to grandfather out this artifical bubble which sees thousands of black athletes in schools they would otherwise not even attend. That is the source of the power of these black student unions. Since colleges are so fond of making laws which parallel our own legal system, they might want to think about some anti-extortion laws. For my part, colleges have held this viper to their breast for decades now, even encouraged it, and they deserve everything which is coming to them. Based on yesterday, that’s going to be quite a lot.
Male sperm count has sharply declined world wide (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/scientists-warn-of-sperm-count-crisis-8382449.html)
and so has female fertility http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2008/11/13/the-global-infertility-crisis.html)
Animal cross species hybrids are born infertile or tend to be biologically weak. Their are few notable exceptions and most become genetic dead ends (http://www.discoverwildlife.com/animals/why-do-animals-interbreed).
I argue that racial discrimination may be a human isolation mechanism to prevent cross species breeding produces cross species hybrids that are sterile or biologically weak.
Humans are inherently racially biased even when we have good intentions (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/04/upshot/the-measuring-sticks-of-racial-bias-.html).
We simply do not know enough to conclude that racism has no place or purpose in this world.
It is possible that the eradication of racism could lead to human extinction.
Liberal rationale: Obama is racist for having a black wife.
Colleges and Universities were warned years ago where this might end, but the draw of publicity and the possibility of actually making some money from their athletic programs drew them on. The reality is, few Universities make money on their athletic programs. The big schools do, but the overwhelming majority of them lose money.
Such places were an exception. The Free Soil movement was all about keeping the soil free from Negros and making it safe for free white labor.
When you’re hell bent on stealing from honest, hard working people to grow the power of government by using the lazy and dishonest, I can see how you would come to that conclusion.
