Joe Biden and White Self-Hatred

In 1991, Sen. Joe Biden was the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee who permitted the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas to become a “high-tech lynching.” Among other things, this squalid episode had the effect of causing young Andrew Breitbart to begin questioning the liberal beliefs he had grown up with. (See, for example, Larry O’Connor’s column from last October, “The Kavanaugh effect: The next Andrew Breitbart is watching.”) What Biden and his fellow Democrats did to Thomas was so clearly wrong, and so obviously motivated by political hatred, that it was henceforth impossible for Democrats to appeal to a sense of decorum or bipartisanship without being seen as hypocrites. If there were one incident in his life for which Biden owes America an apology, this was it, but the politics of the Democratic Party have changed to such an extent that Biden is now apologizing for the wrong reasons:

During a recent struggle session over his role in the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill Supreme Court hearings of 1991, prospective presidential candidate Joe Biden declared that the United States had a centuries-old embedded cultural problem with permissive violence against women. “It’s an English jurisprudential culture,” Biden explained this week, “a white man’s culture. It’s got to change.”
“English jurisprudential culture” is, of course, the foundation of American governance and our Constitutional rights. It’s unlikely any culture in history has brought more freedom and prosperity to more of humankind. . . .
Those who demand acts of contrition over “English jurisprudential culture,” seem to have a problem with ideals of blind justice and due process that stop us from sacrificing people to the whims of an aggrieved mob. Biden’s transgression against progressivism, as far as I can tell, was affirming to Thomas during the Hill hearings that, “from the beginning and at this moment, until the end, the presumption [of innocence] is with you.” It wasn’t true.
Though it’s quite puzzling why the former vice president laments the “white” cultural evils of American jurisprudence when mentioning his role in the Thomas Supreme Court hearings. Perhaps confessing racial guilt is merely a form of ritual self-flagellation these days. Then again, it was Biden, with the assistance of a bunch of other white men, helped smear a black man with an impeccable record and no corroborating evidence of wrongdoing simply because he held the wrong kind of views.

(Hat-tip: Stephen Green at Instapundit.)

This kind of “ritual self-flagellation” by white men has become normalized on the Left, where feminists assert the inherent superiority of women and “heterosexual white male” is an epithet. The most obvious response to being demonized in this way is simply for white men to avoid leftists, and you can see by 2016 exit polls (white males favoring Trump over Clinton by a 2-to-1 margin) that this is how most have reacted.

However, a Democrat politician like Biden can’t escape the necessity of trying to appeal to the voter base of a party ideologically organized around anti-white and anti-male hatred. So he must now grovel apologetically and denounce “white man’s culture” in hope of securing his party’s presidential nomination. And he doesn’t seem to consider how politics often works like Newton’s Third Law of Motion. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, and it can be predicted that most young white men, watching Biden’s “ritual self-flagellation,” will respond by saying, “Hell, no.” It is one thing for a wealthy old white politician to abase himself and plead for mercy from the Democrat voter base, but your average young white guy doesn’t feel the need to apologize.

Democrats never seem to anticipate the consequences of pandering to the Left, and blame Republicans for the evidence of “racism” and “sexism” which Democrats themselves have helped to inspire. The more Democrats double-down on identity politics and Cultural Marxism, the more they will alienate the majority of Americans, but because the liberal media are always willing to make excuses for Democrats, to rationalize their failures by scapegoating Republicans — “Orange Man Bad!” — there is no hope that this trend will ever be corrected.

The kind of dangerous violent reaction we saw recently in Christchurch is, to a great extent, a result of soi-disant “conservatives” refusing to stand up against the Left’s identity-politics game. If conservatives are afraid to call things by their right name, we risk becoming complicit in the normalization of the Left’s bizarre worldview.
