Like all nations, we have sometimes behaved shabbily. But I stand by my claim: no other civilisation has been so secure a repository for human freedom.

All of these guilt-mongers can go get stuffed. We can be intellectually honest about our shortcomings without veering into the destructive self-hatred that so many Lefties just seem to groove on. I don’t give guilt, and I refuse to receive it from them.

    Portside publicists like Victor Navasky and Barbara Ehrenreich are not wracked with guilt. They are what Thomas Sowell called ‘one up-ers”. Trashing their own society is a self-aggrandizing act.

    Mr. Hannan is one of the more interesting thinkers out there and always worth a read. But I find myself less willing to spend the time doing so when he writes this kind of rubbish:

    How can such a smart man as Hannan be so ignorant?
