The Wrong Matthew Ingalls, the Correct ‘Jane Doe’ and the Cornell 7 Case

Matthew Ingalls, former Cornell Chi Phi

The Ivy League Is Decadent and Depraved, as I have been saying for years, and recent events at Cornell University confirm my judgment.

Before I proceed to the lurid details of the (allegedly criminal) October 2024 gang bang at the Chi Phi house, permit me to share this anecdote: Harvard University has a famous a capella singing group called the Whiffenpoofs. When I was working for the Rome (Ga.) News-Tribune back in the 1990s, the Whiffenpoofs performed at a Berry College event I covered, and one of their songs was a parody of the Cornell alma mater:

Far above Cayuga’s waters,
There’s an awful smell.
Some say it’s Cayuga’s waters,
Some say it’s Cornell.

The vaunted prestige of the Ivy League and the supposed “elite” status of their students is utterly debunked by any sober-minded account of what happened the evening of October 19, 2024, an incident that continued into the pre-dawn hours of October 20 because (to quote another song), the train kept a-rollin’ all night long. Despite their high SAT scores, Cornell students can’t even do an orgy without causing a national crisis.

The former Chi Phi house

Does the slang term “spit-roasted” ring a bell here? Because, according to a sworn statement cited by Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten, that was what “Jane Doe” agreed to at the Chi Phi house:

On the evening of October 19, 2024, Jane Doe walked the approximately one-mile distance from Lot 10 [a bar, located at 105 South Cayuga Street] in the City of Ithaca to the Chi Phi Fraternity at 107 Edgemoor Lane to meet her friend Male Number 1. She had made plans to meet Male Number 1 earlier in the week and “had been texting [Male Number 1] that [she] was on the way.” Jane Doe described her level of intoxication as a “5 out of 10” when she arrived at the fraternity.
While there, Jane Doe opened one previously unopened can of beer. She and Male Number 1 “danced a little” in a way that “was definitely flirtatious in nature.” Male Number 1 brought Jane Doe to a “quiet area” and “asked how [Jane Doe] would feel about having a threesome with two male partners.”
Jane Doe “agreed due to how attracted [she] was to [Male Number 1] on top of [her] drunken curiousness.” When she learned that Male Number 2 would be the third participant, Jane Doe “remembered being excited because [she] thought that [Male Number 1 and Male Number 2] wanting to have a threesome meant that they were gay.”
The three engaged in a “threesome” involving oral and vaginal sex in a room of the fraternity.

Based on subsequent reporting, and a lawsuit filed last month, we know that “Male Number 1” refers to Matthew Ingalls, and that “Male Number 2” is Jonathan Newell. According to the sworn statement by “Jane Doe” which the DA cited, “Jane Doe” consented to this threesome, but her lawsuit characterizes this activity as an “assault”:

During the assault, Defendant INGALLS forced oral sex on Plaintiff while Defendant NEWELL forced vaginal intercourse on her from behind. Throughout the assault, Defendant NEWELL slapped Plaintiff on the buttocks multiple times, resulting in bruising.

As I said, she got spit-roasted. As events proceeded, Ingalls passed out for a while, and another Chi Phi brother named Gillio Lopes joined Newell in further sexual activity with “Jane Doe” — again, described in her lawsuit as an “assault.” A fourth Chi Phi member, Diego Sarabia later tried to join the activity, but “Jane Doe” pushed him away. Ingalls later woke up and initiated another spit-roasting, this time with Chi Phi brother Winston Lee on the other end of “Jane Doe.” There are several other sordid details — e.g., these Ivy League students snorting ketamine off of each other’s naked bodies — but these were the main events of the night. Two other Chi Phi members, Scott Kretzschmar and Scott Norris, are named as defendants in the lawsuit, although neither of them engaged in any sexual activity with “Jane Doe.” Their status as defendants is evidently due to the (alleged) fact that, after Newell sent out a text message advertising to his fellow Chi Phi brothers that “Jane Doe” was available upstairs for their pleasure, Kretzschmar and Norris showed up, took a look around, and decided not to ride that train.

Because I am a mere journalist, rather than a lawyer, I do not claim to know what is true or false, who is guilty or innocent, and I refrained from commenting on the Cornell 7 case until New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced she was appointing the state’s Attorney General Letitia James to launch a new investigation of the case. The fix is in.

The lawsuit (Doe v. Cornell, et al.) is what has triggered this political circus, and the quality of the plaintiff’s attorney is exposed by the fact that, when it came time for process servers to notify the defendants of this suit, they contacted the wrong Matthew Ingalls. The lawyer actually included in court documents the address of another guy with the same name — who turns out to be a 23-year-old sergeant in the Marine Corps who has never attended Cornell. So all the deranged liberals who are supporting “Jane Doe” started sending obscene messages and death threats to the family of the Marine sergeant, because the lawyer for “Jane Doe” had essentially “doxxed” them. And now you have Hochul and Letitia James jumping up to turn this into a national witch-hunt, a decision guaranteed to produce more such insanity.

“Jane Doe,” allegedly

Now we arrive at a subject that has been a subject of enormous controversy in the past 72 hours, namely the identity of “Jane Doe.” Veteran journalist Michael Tracey, among others, has identified her as Lucy H. Craig. The daughter of an Alabama physician, Lucy attended the prestigious Indian Springs School, a private academy about 15 miles south of Birmingham. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta (“Tri-Delt”) at Cornell, which matches the identity of “Jane Doe.” Tracey says he has private sources who confirmed this identification, and Lucy is being named all over social media as the Tri-Delt who pulled the Chi Phi train. If the identification was wrong, wouldn’t we have a denial by now? Wouldn’t there be angry Cornell students coming forward to tell us that no, it wasn’t Lucy, but some other Tri-Delt sister who got spit-roasted at the Chi Phi house on October 19, 2024? The logical deduction is, it’s her.

Because I’m already more than 1,000 words into this saga, I won’t extend the discourse to an analysis of what happened that night, beyond this: Matthew Ingalls is brutally handsome, and according to the statement cited by the DA, it was because he was so attractive that Lucy Craig was willing to engage in a threesome. Well, that, and her confessed hope that the proposed threesome would include some guy-on-guy action between Ingalls and Newell, which she wanted to witness. Sick stuff.

One more thing, as Lieutenant Columbo would say: Byron York has been digging into the documents of the internal investigation of the incident that Cornell University conducted, and calls attention to something curious. It appears that “Jane Doe” had already had sex with Newell on some occasion prior to the night in question. Isn’t it kind of weird that, when Ingalls proposed the threesome, the guy who he brought in as the third party was someone “Jane Doe” had already hooked up with?

I repeat: The Ivy League Is Decadent and Depraved.
