Barrett Brown promotes atheism on Fox News, January 2009

Until this afternoon, I had never heard of Catherine Fitzpatrick, but in September she put up an excellent and lengthy article debunking the Barrett Brown victim myth. Fitzpatrick first encountered Barrett circa 2005 in the online virtual world Second Life, where he was part of a pack of so-called “griefers” who engaged in destructive activity:

In Second Life, by his own admission, Brown participated in raids which crashed the servers of people holding live music events or discussions or just hanging out. I have no idea if he personally crashed my servers, but I believe that he did, because he stopped by my blog here several times to heckle and the group was small in SL and tended to do everything together. The PNs as they were called were notorious and everyone knew about them in this relatively small community. I was singled out for attack because I began blogging about their vigilantism and harassment tactics starting in 2005. When they attacked the John Edwards Campaign in Second Life in 2006 and committed other coercive acts of hacking against speech they didn’t like, I quickly saw that far from fighting for freedom from cults like the Scientologists, they were in fact engaged in a turf war for power over the Internet, and wanted to impose a regime where no one could live unless they accepted their arbitrary rule.

Fitzpatrick’s insight about “vigilantism and harassment tactics” is crucial to understanding all such anarchist activity. This is not about politics, but about the use of illegal “coercive acts of hacking” to attack one’s enemies. To accept political claims as justification of these crimes — Barrett Brown and others, including Jeremy Hammond, have characterized their crimes as “civil disobedience” — is to invite a sort of Hobbesian war of “all against all” where the sole determination of authority is simply who is more skillfully ruthless.

Few conservative writers have paid any attention to Barrett Brown, with the result that nearly all journalism about him is by liberals who sympathetically repeat the self-serving claims made on Brown’s behalf by his hacker buddies, a reverential attitude which ignores the fact that many members of Anonymous resented Barrett’s arrogant glory-hogging and never really trusted him. Catherine Fitzpatrick also points out that the paranoid conspiracy theories Barrett and his supporters created about HB Gary are fundamentally wrong:

The tech press is filled with so many gloating accounts of the hack of HBGary . . . that it is hard to clear away the cloud of hacker obfuscation and social-hacking to realize: Aaron Barr and his colleagues did nothing wrong by planning to respond to the challenge of hacking through various measures which are legal — and if unethical, no different than any that Anonymous itself first used, with far greater damage. Aaron Barr and Greg Hoglund were never indicted for any crimes, nor did any of the people they identified wind up being falsely arrested. Instead, real hackers who committed real crimes were arrested and sentenced, or turned informants, or are awaiting trial, like Brown.
A key reason is because Jennifer Emick . . . an Anonymous “hacktivist” who had joined the movement in 2008 to fight Scientology for personal reasons of seeing a relative caught up in the cult, and had been inspired by the fight for Internet freedom in Tunisia and elsewhere, became repulsed and concerned when she saw the hackers turn against others including HBGary. She enlisted the FBI’s cooperation, and eventually one of the chief LulzSec hackers discovered — Sabu — was turned into an informant, and his information led to the arrest of others. Naturally, those hackers who remain at large continue to attack her viciously in all the infamous ways that Anonymous has become known for — exposing her private information, a form of harassment known as “doxing,” stalking her and her family, making harassment phone calls, pizza deliveries and even prank calls to police or child welfare authorities. I’ve had a lot of this done to me over the years merely for blogging about the criminality of these people, so I have a sense of what it is like.
It is not journalism. It’s crime. . . .

You really should read the whole thing and notice that Catherine Fitzpatrick feels obligated to say she doesn’t like me because my “violent statements and extreme views are really a turn-off,” even while she references my own analysis of Barrett Brown’s illegal activities.

This is an important point: You don’t have to like me to agree with me when I’m right. (Although, of course, I’m always right.)

Destructive Totalitarian ‘Equality’

Posted on | November 24, 2013 | 69 Comments

The various “-isms” of left-wing ideology are really just variations of a destructive anti-social nihilism, whose purpose was forever defined more than 150 years ago when, in their Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels declared: “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” Once you understand this profound hostility to social order — the misfit’s appetite for anarchy — then you realize that whatever grievance they complain of is really just a pretext. They do not actually wish to reform society. Rather, they seek revenge against society, and don’t care that others are harmed by their acts of destruction, except insofar as they actively desire such harm.

The Left hates America not for its failures, but for its successes. Our peace, prosperity and liberty are a rebuke to the hateful fanaticism of our nation’s enemies, both foreign and domestic. If the Left told the truth about its intentions, they could never succeed. Their dishonesty is therefore integral to their destructive purposes:

The calls for equality and tolerance are simply convenient excuses and lies that serve only to destroy social norms so that they may be replaced by the Left’s own visions. They themselves will refuse to show the tolerance that they demand of others. This is because they define the views they disagree with as “intolerance,” “H8,” et al. and the opposition to those views as necessarily being for “tolerance” and against “H8? regardless of the actual lack of tolerance or hatred that they show. . . .
In order to support this manichean worldview, intolerance, oppression, and hate must be defined as the Cultural Maxist “superstructure” of straight White “cis-gendered” “X-tian” males who created social norms for the sole purpose of securing their unjust privileges by oppressing everyone else. The Left then sets up history as a progression of this “oppression” to one of “equality” and “democracy.” This “progress” is defined as being in manichean opposition to the founding principles of this country, and our Anglo-Saxon heritage upon which it was built.

“Obama: Anatomy of a World Leader,” by Alex Gray (detail)

The Washington Post:

GENEVA — Iran and six major powers agreed early Sunday on an historic deal that freezes key parts of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for temporary relief on some economic sanctions, diplomats confirmed.

We need not know anything about the details of this “historic deal” to know that it is absolutely worthless. The Islamic Republic of Iran has no respect for law, and cannot be expected to honor any promise it makes, except for its long-avowed purpose to annihilate Israel, to destroy “the Great Satan” and otherwise to carry out its violent worldwide revolutionary jihad against the West.

All the Iranian dictatorship seeks to accomplish by negotiation with the West is to anesthetize its enemies, to render opposition impotent by means of treaties that will postpone the inevitable confrontation until Iran has become stronger and we have become weaker.

Any “deal” with Iran is necessarily a bad deal, and the double guarantee of a bad deal is that it was approved by the Obama administration, which is “historic” only as a monument to incompetence with few parallels in human experience.

“The practical way of looking at things . . . may serve well enough in ordinary, normal times. But our times are not ‘normal’ in the good old Victorian sense, and never will be again. . . . These men, even Halifax, were essentially middle-class, not aristocrats. They did not have the hereditary sense of the security of the state, unlike Churchill, Eden, the Cecils. Nor did they have the toughness of the 18th-century aristocracy. They came at the end of the ascendancy of the Victorian middle-class, deeply affected as that was by high-mindedness and humbug. They all talked, in one form or another, the language of disingenuousness and cant: it was second nature to them — so different from Churchill. . . . It meant that they failed to see what was true, until too late, when it was simply a question of survival.”
— A.L. RowseAppeasement: A Study in Political Decline, 1933-39

Memeorandum has reaction from around the blogosphere, including Weasel ZippersBlazing Cat FurDaniel Pipes at National ReviewAmerican Spectator and Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch.

UPDATE: All that is necessary to understand what is wrong with this agreement is to quote what Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif told Iran’s government-controlled media: “All plots hatched by the Zionist regime to stop the nuclear agreement have failed.”

Ah, “the Zionist regime”!

#ObamaCare Is A River Of Lies, With Headwaters In Hell

Your attention is drawn to Andrew McCarthy, who states it succinctly:

The point of showing that Obama is carrying out a massive scheme to defraud — one that certainly would be prosecuted if committed in the private sector — is not to agitate for a prosecution that is never going to happen. It is to demonstrate that there is logic to the lies. There is an objective that the fraud aims to achieve. The scheme is the framework within which the myriad deceptions are peddled. Once you understand the scheme, once you can put the lies in a rational context, you understand why fraud was the president’s only option — and why “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan” barely scratches the surface of Obamacare’s deceit.

Read, understand and motivate your neighbors. 2014 is past the whole “most important election of your life”. We’re past any easy remedy for the Statist cancer. No, our back is now to the wall.

Hard to feel much empathy for the insurance companies. They cut their deal with Cthulhu, who doesn’t seem to handle that whole “transaction” thing terribly well. One speculates that a grand jury investigation might uncover some email hinting that, while insurance companies will surely be on the hook for claims, the Administration always had “BenghaziCare” intentions for reimbursment.

What Canadians Consider ‘Art’

Posted on | November 24, 2013 | 42 Comments

This painting — a crude and childish cartoon that would not deserve praise if it had been done by an fifth-grader — was part of an “art” project in Toronto that was funded by Canadian taxpayers.

M. Joseph Sheppard called attention to this project, a “lesbian haunted house” that was open to the public last month. It was intended as a parody of the “Hell Houses” that some evangelical churches sponsor as a didactic alternative to secular Halloween haunted houses.

What is important to know is that the “Hell House” phenomenon was organic in its origins: Some Christian youth leaders saw that young people were flocking to gory commercial spook houses and decided to create events that would teach moral lessons in the same way. It doesn’t matter whether you embrace the message, or approve of how the message was delivered; the point is that the church-sponsored “Hell House” is a voluntary activity conducted at private expense.

However, there was neither commercial demand nor voluntary support sufficient to bring into existence the lesbian haunted house in Toronto, so it could only be funded by coercive action of government:

Allyson Mitchell, the artist behind “A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House,” has received thousands in government grants.
Acknowledgment is posted on the outside of the rented location at 303 Lansdowne Ave., also called Killjoy Kastle, that funding was provided by the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council (OAC) and Canadian Council for the Arts. The artist undertook her work in collaboration with the Art Gallery of York University (AGYU).
Mitchell refused to discuss the funding for her project. . . .
Research shows the AGYU received $55,000 from the City of Toronto so far in 2013.
The Canadian Council for the Arts 2013 allotments are not yet available but documents show Mitchell was granted $20,000 in 2011 from the council and a total of $61,000 since 2005.

This type of subsidized bohemianism — épater la bourgeoisie at taxpayer expense — is most effective as an argument against government funding for art. Like “green energy,” if there were any market demand for this stuff, there would be no need to subsidize it.

Allyson Mitchell is the Solyndra of the art world.

You will perhaps not be surprised that this celebration of artistic failure was applauded by its intended audience of socialists:

As a female, queer tax payer who enjoys this kind of “deviant” art (oh my!), I’m happy the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Council funded this project. Their funding allowed for free entry into the haunted house so that everyone, no matter their income, could access the art inside.

Oh, I see: If it weren’t for these government “arts councils,” the pleasures of “deviant” art might only be available to the rich. And I’m sure that the impoverished children of inner-city Toronto were edified and uplifted by Allyson Mitchell’s exhibit. She gets tens of thousands of dollars annually, and the starving kids get . . . art.

M. Joseph Sheppard confesses his mystification:

But, leaving aside the Palin Derangement Syndrome the fact that there exists on this planet a “lesbian haunted house” is a marvel of our age and something to be wondered at. What it means in the broader context of society — well I have absolutely no idea but it must mean something, perhaps you can puzzle it out!

I’ve done my best, Joe, and let me make one final point: The image at the top of the page was shamelessly swiped from the aforesaid Female Queer Canadian, an act of expropriation I can justify because (a) the painting itself was not hers, (b) a work commissioned at taxpayer expense is arguably public domain, and also (c) fuck Canada.

The World’s Youngest Blogger Salutes The Arrival Of J.W. McCain

First, let us dispatch some of the fleeting concerns afoot which were triggered by the new newest addition to the Cohort of the Catastrophically Cashed-out:

Where is the evidence of early blogging? I am, of course, referring to that now almost nearly slightly quasi-infamous cut, “Claustrophobic Blues”:
To wrest the title “World’s Youngest Blogger”, bringing it is necessary, but not sufficient. One must Bring. It. Early.
