Barrett Brown Does Some Excellent Writing From Jail, Where He Belongs

Barrett Brown in meltdown mode, Sept. 12, 2012
“Thinking himself a sort of one-man Woodward and Bernstein who would heroically expose the Hidden Secrets of the Surveillance State, Brown instead exposed himself as a blundering amateur who got himself in so far over his head that he couldn’t handle the catastrophic result.”
— Robert Stacy McCain, “The Kook Who Knew Too Much,” The American Spectator, June 27, 2013
Look, if you melt down on YouTube in a paranoid rage threatening to “destroy” an FBI agent and his family, you belong in jail.
Quod erat demonstrandum.
Some people have accused me of hating Barrett Brown, but that’s like saying I “hate” my 14-year-old when he gets a D on his report card.
No one could deny that Barrett is intelligent and humorous. However, neither can it be denied that Barrett was an arrogant punk, full of irrational resentments and overweening ambition, a narcissistic “famewhore” (thank you, Adrian Chen) who decided that being the public spokesman for an international criminal conspiracy would be his ticket to the wealth and glory he imagined himself to deserve.
Glory days: Barrett Brown interviewed by Michael Isikoff, 2011
So now, the Boy Genius once described by NBC’s Michael Isikoff as “an underground commander in a new kind of warfare” is sitting his ass in jail. Back in January, his lawyer waived Barrett’s right to a speedy trial, evidently with the idea that they could turn “Free Barrett Brown” into a lucrative fundraising franchise, portray the defendant as a First Amendment martyr and somehow score a political victory that would result in Barrett’s acquittal and vindication.
Can this legal equivalent of an Underpants Gnome scheme actually work? We can’t rule out that possibility, but in the meantime, Barrett has spent 14 months in jail — not actually in a federal facility, but in some sort of privately operated rent-a-jail.
There is a profound irony that the guy who spent a year and a half “investigating” the practices of government security contractors like HB Gary is now being held in a private jail run by government contractors. But profound irony isn’t something that Barrett has much opportunity to relish under the circumstances, and his lawyer provided Vice.com with a genuinely interesting article the erstwhile Boy Genius wrote about jail life and what inmates watch on TV:
There is little to be said about what the English-speaking inmates watch, with one exception. One particular program is viewed religiously not only in our 24-man tank, but also in the two others into which I can peer through windows connecting us across a hall. This particular show appears, oddly enough, on the Oxygen channel, which I seem to recall being Oprah Winfrey’s network for women. . . .
This program on the Oxygen network, though, being of the reality show genre, is called The Bad Girls Club. A flock of tacky twenty-something women are thrown together in a big fancy house in some American city where tacky twenty-something women can easily be assembled, like Miami or Atlanta. Episodes proceed more or less as follows: All of the women venture out together to a prominent local nightclub in a limo. The ride is punctuated by cheers to the effect that they are The Bad Girls. They get to the club, where they quite naturally sit in the VIP section and order bottle service. There follows a jump-cut montage of the girls drinking, dancing, and half-jokingly humping each other. Then a dispute invariably arises out of nothing. For this dispute to be resolved, there must first be performed a sort of ritualized catharsis. First, the woman who wrongly considers herself to be the offended party must address the other women as “y’all fake-ass bitches” on the limo ride home. Upon arrival, at least one or two women must flee crying into the house. Others must huddle together by the pool, smoking and airing their imaginary grievances. One will go back inside to get some more wine coolers and as she walks down the hall: BAM, SOME OTHER CHICK RUNS UP AND JUST FUCKING CLOCKS HER IN THE FACE AND THEN THEY GO DOWN SLAPPING THE SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER! Until the security guards who are on hand for the purpose pull them apart. Thus the conflict is resolved. I’ve decided not to draw any wider conclusions from this.
Read the whole thing. It’s actually very good, and is the sort of observational cultural commentary that Barrett Brown is good at.
Too bad the arrogant punk couldn’t be content with that kind of work, and instead got himself into this miserable situation.
Well, at least his mom only got probation.
James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas Team Exposes Fraud of ObamaCare ‘Navigators’
Posted on | November 12, 2013 | 42 Comments
James O’Keefe, the guerrilla videographer who helped bring down ACORN (the “community organizing” group that Barack Obama worked for as a lawyer and trainer) and got NPR’s president fired, is back.
This time, his undercover investigators focused on Obamacare’s “navigators,” the nearly 50,000 people who, in the words of the Department of Health and Human Services, “will serve as an in-person resource for Americans who want additional assistance in shopping for and enrolling in plans” on the Obamacare exchanges (at least when they’re finally working). The total value of grants doled out for nonprofits and community organizations to hire navigators has topped $67 million nationwide, and some of the money is going to a group run by ACORN’s highly controversial founder.
Mary Katharine Ham at Hot Air:
The navigator system— with grants given to plenty of left-leaning community organizers to lead citizens to the entitlement—was always fertile ground for mischief. It’s been made more problematic by the incompetence of the administration.
Navigators were originally required to go through 30 hours of training, but that requirement was later cut to 20 hours because the navigator program, like the rest of Obamacare, was falling on its face. . . .
Obamacare is a system so complex, so incompetently administered that it doesn’t even require malice on the part of navigators or the bill’s allies to screw up people’s lives royally.
Da Tech Guy has an exclusive video interview with Project Veritas executive director Daniel Francisco. Permit me to suggest that this would be a good time to go make a contribution to Project Veritas.

When Neal Rauhauser (@Kookpocalypse) Stalked My Army Son’s Facebook Page
Posted on | November 11, 2013 | 89 Comments
Regular readers of this blog need no introduction to Neal Rauhauser, the disgraced former Democrat campaign consultant and associate of bomber/progressive activist Brett Kimberlin. Most recently, Bullyville has vowed to put Neal Rauhauser in prison.
Last month, Rauhauser did something so astonishingly vicious even I was shocked, despite my familiarity with Neal’s evil dishonesty. But I put it aside until today — Veteran’s Day — when I saw Rauhauser using one of his (innumerable) Twitter sockpuppet accounts to talk about his admiration for the military, the lying wretch.
Everybody knows how proud I am of my children, and you know that it’s been more than two weeks since we’ve heard from our Army son, who is enduring an ordeal known as “Three Weeks in Hell.”
My wife has been praying constantly, and I’ve been trying to put it out of my mind, because there’s no point worrying about it. But exactly one month ago, on Oct. 11, this is what Neal Rauhauser did on Twitter:
Among other things, this was a deliberate lie. In June, my son made a sarcastic remark about the Supreme Court decision invalidating DOMA, and my response was to remind him to avoid such humor: “You are not allowed to joke about this, soldier!”
Well, we know Neal Rauhauser lies constantly, but what was his motive for this lie? Was he hoping to make my son a target of (mistaken) homophobic violence? Or was he hoping to generate some kind of reaction from me? Never mind that, however.
WHY WAS THIS FREAK NEAL RAUHAUSER
STALKING MY SON’S FACEBOOK PAGE?
@NealRauhauser YOU SHALL REGRET THIS BUT ONCE, AND THAT WILL BE FOREVER. https://t.co/nedWtYnS0L MY SON? http://t.co/6XiwX671kn
— Robert Stacy McCain (@rsmccain) October 12, 2013
Neal Rauhauser deleted those Tweets, like the gutless worm he is, and he is currently lying as @Kookpocalypse. But whatever he does, and wherever he goes, that filthy scoundrel will never escape the stain of dishonor attached to the contemptible name Neal Rauhauser.
P.S.: That tattoo on my son’s torso? A cross, and a few words from the Bible: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil . . .”
Obama Administration Gets Its Benghazi On Over In Afghanistan
Posted on | November 11, 2013 | 36 Comments
by Smitty
This is just despicable:
KABUL — A growing number of Afghan interpreters who worked alongside American troops are being denied U.S. visas allotted by Congress because the State Department says there is no serious threat against their lives.
But the interpreters, many of whom served in Taliban havens for years, say U.S. officials are drastically underestimating the danger they face. Immigration attorneys and Afghan interpreters say the denials are occurring just as concerns about Taliban retribution are mounting due to the withdrawal of U.S. forces.
Not only is our rodeo clown administration laying a death sentence on everybody who ever provided any assistance to the U.S., it’s worse than that. Stand by, once these guys are certain that they’ve been sold out, we can expect some unexpected, tragic news. If you take a really bad inner-city gang warfare scene, throw in a religious twist and kitchen sink explosives, you have an idea of Afghanistan. It’s a land of highland Inigo Montoyas, and we’ll never live down this sort of backstabbing.
I guess if we didn’t have the travesty of Benghazi to reflect upon, this dishonorable idiocy might seem startling.

Some Kind of Twitter Thing in the Virginia Attorney General’s Race?
Posted on | November 11, 2013 | 17 Comments
This is probably one of those silly things everybody will forget about later, but liberals have been trying to steal the Virginia Attorney General’s election from Republican Mark Obenshain and were using Twitter to do it, or something. Virginia is just a damned shame and while there has been endless finger-pointing among Republicans, perhaps someone should start asking why a California billionaire dropped $8 million to help elect Terry McAuliffe governor.

Go, @SarahPalinUSA, Go! Whacks Lauer, ObamaCare on ‘Today’ Show (VIDEO)

Matt Lauer tried to steamroll Mama Grizzly — fail!
Lauer asked Palin about President Barack Obama’s apology at the end of last week after it was discovered that five percent of Americans can’t keep their existing policies because they don’t meet the standards of the new healthcare law.
“What apology?’’ Palin said. “He kind of acknowledged a bit that there’s a broken website. The broken website is the least of America’s worries. This broken website I think is symbolic of a broken administration. Take over one-sixth of our economy and the socialized medicine that’s being crammed down our throat, that’s what’s broken.
“Where do you get this five percent?’’ she said. “It’s not five percent. It’s most Americans will not be able to keep the healthcare policy and programs that they had desired. The new programs that are being forced down our throat are unaffordable. Some of them are still being told, ‘Well if you like that insurance policy and that coverage, you still will be able to keep it, it’s just going to cost you a little bit more.’ That’s the point. If it’s going to cost you more, then it’s not the same policy.”

Even in Deep-Blue California, ObamaCare Still Inspires Deep Doubts, Poll Finds
Posted on | November 11, 2013 | 30 Comments
Donald Douglas points out that President Obama got nearly 60 percent of the vote in California last year, but the president’s signature health-care program is still widely unpopular there:
Sixty-five percent of respondents said people wouldn’t be able to afford the health insurance they’ll be required to have under the law’s individual mandate. Forty percent think the program will have a negative effect on what they pay for coverage, compared with 21% who expect a positive outcome.
According to the survey, 46% of registered voters expect the Affordable Care Act to be a drag on the overall economy and 34% see an economic boost. Nearly 60% think the law’s new requirements will raise healthcare costs and keep businesses from hiring more workers.
