Some people can, to an eerie degree. A study from earlier this summer found that college students had “above-chance accuracy” when guessing whether people were straight or gay, even when they were shown faces without any contextual clues. Even when they only got to look for 50 milliseconds. Even when the faces were upside-down.
For those primed to detect sexual orientation (one author speculated that older people or those from other cultures might have a harder time), it would seem that facial features can be a semi-reliable indicator of sexual orientation.

Not only did Fareed Zakaria beclown himself by stealing other’s work in a gun grabber article for Time, but Rames Ponnuru notes that when FZ acts as an intellectual burglar, Fareed thugs the contents trash can:

Fareed Zakaria has tried to make “The Case for Gun Control” in Time. The results are not pretty. Virtually every argument he makes misrepresents the underlying data.

After a lead that cites the Sikh-temple shooting, the Aurora massacre, and the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others, Zakaria trots out the usual international comparisons: “The gun-homicide rate per capita in the U.S. is 30 times that of Britain and Australia, 10 times that of India and four times that of Switzerland. When confronted with such a large deviation, a scholar would ask, Does America have some potential cause for this that is also off the chart? I doubt that anyone seriously thinks we have 30 times as many crazy people as Britain or Australia. But we do have many, many more guns.”

‘Repeal Equals Death’

Top Romney adviser Eric Ferhnstrom said, “I don’t think a world champion limbo dancer could get any lower than the Obama campaign right now.” The problem with such a statement is that, just when you think they can’t go any lower, liberals always manage to surprise you, as when Jonathan Alter went on MSNBC and declared that Republicans want people to die:

“[W]hat the press should be focused on is what are the consequences of repeal of Obamacare. And the consequences, as Mike just indicated, are death. Repeal equals death. … People will die in the United States if Obamacare is repealed. That is not an exaggeration, that is not crying fire, it is a simple fact. If you have preexisting conditions and you are thrown off of health insurance or if you get sick after you and your husband, spouse, loses the job, you are not going to do to the doctor as soon, your cancer or disease is not going to be caught as quickly and your odds of dying are much, much increased.”

U.S. Women’s Water Polo Team Wins Gold Medal With Five Goals From Maggie Steffens and Support From This Blog

Mainly it was Maggie Steffens, of course:

The 19-year-old Steffens on Thursday capped a stunning two-week performance in London, scoring five goals to power the U.S. past Spain 8-5 and give the Americans their first ever Olympic women’s water polo title. . . .
[A]fter a tight first quarter in the final, it was the U.S. defense, with goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong batting away shots and defenders swarming Spain’s shooters, that turned the game in the Americans’ favor.
“We got some momentum there defensively, and once we get some momentum defensively, oh man, it’s tough to get the ball past us,” [U.S. coach Adam] Krikorian said.

I’m going to give credit for that “swarming” U.S. defense to my favorite player, Melissa Seidemann. Because I can, that’s why.

Brett Kimberlin Will Have to Answer Questions Under Penalty of Perjury

As a definition of “more fun than a barrel of monkeys,” I think that will do, don’t you? Aaron Walker’s attorney Dan Backer has served interrogatories in Walker’s lawsuit against Kimberlin, Neal Rauhauser and Ron Brynaert:

Kimberlin has been served with discovery and has twenty-one days in which to comply.
And we won’t be revealing what we served on him just yet, but I have seen it. I chuckled at the sight of it. He’s going to hate every minute of this. He has plainly screwed with the wrong people.

Did I mention that Kimberlin is a convicted perjurer and so profoundly dishonest he can’t tell the truth to save his life? Did I mention that Walker is suing Kimberlin in Virginia, where the courts are unlikely to be sympathetic to a convicted terrorist like Kimberlin? Did I mention that both Rauhauser and Brynaert have failed to respond to Walker’s suit, so that Walker’s attorney is now moving for default judgments against them? Democrats: Allen West Is Willie Horton!

Remember when I said that Obama super-PAC ad had scraped all the way through the bottom of the barrel? Now Democrats are running an ad that shows Rep. Allen West beating up white women and stealing their money:

What strikes me about this ad is how it is coordinated with President Obama’s message: It is no longer enough to say that Republicans advocate “tax cuts for the rich.” Now the Democrats actually accuse the GOP of wishing to raise taxes on the middle class. The Democrats’ blatant indifference to truth is frightening, as is the evidence that their lies are actually working.

Has it really come to this? Are the Democrats — who have spent the past four years telling us that every possible criticism of Obama is some kind of racist “dog whistle” — going to get away with portraying war hero Allen West as a violent thief?

Go give Allen West some money to fight back against the lies.
