California Liberals to Latino Small Business Owners: ‘No Way, José!’

Liberals love Latinos, right? Except in California. Except when the Latinos in question are small business owners who sell tacos from food trucks. Steven Greenhut explains at Reason magazine:

Desperate for cash, state officials now make unrealistic estimates of their sales and employ heavy-handed tactics, they explain.
To make matters worse, the truck owners say that local police harass them—thanks in part to city officials that don’t like having the trucks around. Every city has different rules for placement of permits on the truck, and most of the owners report getting multiple citations for minor infractions. Each citation can cost $700, which can eat up days worth of taco sales.
The people in attendance spoke mostly Spanish, which was translated for me by Lou Correa, the Santa Ana state senator who organized the group at my request. I promised to quote only the first names of the attendees because of their fear of retribution from the authorities.
“It reaches the point where you have to think about your health,” said Vernonica. “They filed lawsuits against me. They said they would charge me as a criminal in court. I’m out of business. I sold my truck. There are people out there who get government aid who are driving brand new cars. They come after a person like me who is not asking for anything. As long as I have two feet and two hands, I want to work.”
Officials suggested to one truck owner that he go down to the welfare office for benefits. That’s just like California these days — hard-working people are ill treated, but there are plenty of benefits available for those who prefer to live on the dole.

“Occupy VS. Tea Party” is the brainchild of producer/author/musician Gordon G.G. Gebert. Gordon hopes to fund the pilot for his show and get it on air (or the Internet) before the November election. He has chosen the web to raise funds to cover the initial production costs. Using Kickstarter, Gebert hopes to raise $10,000 via “crowd funding.” He has until Thursday, July 19th to reach his goal.

Rewarding Failure, Punishing Success

Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged is in many ways too radical — with dangerous overtones of Nietzsche — but clearly enunciates certain basic insights. In one of her characters’ monologues, Rand expresses the fundamental problem with the Marxist maxim, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.”

What’s wrong with that? It turns “need” into a virtue, a permanent license to take from others, and makes ability a burden.

The resemblance between Marxism and modern liberalism is a subject that conservatives aren’t supposed to mention, nor are we supposed to notice that the Left values loyalty to its agenda over competence or virtue. Warner Todd Huston reminds us how this works:

Proving that no misdeed goes unrewarded on the left, reports have it that once Microsoft and NBC News break up housekeeping and put an end to MSNBC.com in its current form, the resulting new Internet outlet will be getting a new chief. And that new chief will be none other than Vivian Schiller, the disgraced former head of National Public Radio (NPR).
You may remember Vivian Schiller for her bungled firing of the NPR commentator Juan Williams back in 2010.

As a loyal leftist, Schiller can only fail upward, just as Anthony Weiner’s disgrace cannot disqualify him from aspiring to disgrace Democrats in some new office, and Ted Kennedy . . .

Well, Mary Jo Kopechne could not be reached for comment.

Not content to reward failure and celebrate vice, however, the Left’s perverse beliefs require them also to mock virtue and punish success:

Barack Obama wants us to live in an America of his imagining — a magical land of perfect equality where the laws of economics and human nature do not apply, where everyone gets his own unicorn and the only ones who have to pay are the mythical “rich,” who toil endlessly to provide for us all without complaint. . . .
