George Michael Zimmerman, born Oct. 5, 1983, registered as a Democrat in Seminole County, Fla., in August 2002, according to state voter registration documents.

It has come out that the unarmed teenager was suspended from school, and is accused of beating up the man who then shot him dead.

In a comment on Smitty’s post this morning, Pagan Temple begins his complaint with these two hypothetical regrets:

“If Palin hadn’t been run out of the race, or if conservatives could have gotten behind Bachmann . . .”

Thus our friend expresses a common misunderstanding about politics, namely that candidates are not responsible for their own fates.

First, ask yourself, “By whom was Palin ‘run out of the race’?”

She decided herself not to run, and it seems to have been a sort of slow-motion process. While I hate to imply that I have any special kind of inside information (which displeases Governor Palin and her aides), my first inquiries into Palin’s 2012 intentions led me to the belief that she was in wait-and-see mode.

One reason I jumped on the Cain Train early was that I felt we needed a populist outsider to carry the Tea Party momentum from the 2010 mid-term campaign into 2012. Cain’s people were flashing the green light, while we were seeing mixed signals from Wasilla, so I got on board with Herman and figured that if Governor Palin decided to get in later, nobody would blame me for any choice I made between the two. But I was pretty sure I’d have a few months before I had to worry about such a choice, because there were many reasons to suspect that Palin would be in wait-and-see mode for a while.

As the Republican field took shape, trying to read the tea leaves as to Team Sarah’s plans became quite a widespread hobby amongst political observers. By the time I went to Iowa for the run-up to the Ames straw poll, it seemed obvious to me that she’d decided to sit this one out. Back in June, Palin had made a point of praising Rick Perry, whom she had endorsed in his 2010 primary against Kay Bailey Hutchison, and by August, he was getting ready to make his big entrance into the campaign. If Palin really liked Perry, it didn’t make sense to think she would jump into the GOP race against him.

That’s one reason I was so skeptical when Peter Singleton and Michelle McCormick insisted on buying me lunch in Des Moines and telling me about their volunteer Iowa for Palin efforts. (See my Aug. 22 American Spectator column, “Still Waiting for Sarah.”) Everybody became frustrated as the will-she-or-won’t-she speculation dragged on, all the way into October, and I developed a private theory about why Palin dragged her feet so long. God bless Lisa Graas. Go read all of the Catholic Bandita’s Ten Things [She] Learned About Stacy McCain:

He’s liable to shout, in a crowded restaurant, “WTF?!?!?” if (actually “when”) Carl Cameron breaks into a Santorum speech and steals his thunder (intentionally?), and he is liable to shout in a manner loud enough so that he can be heard by everyone in the (very large) building over loud music and five televisions that are playing at the same time. Also, fist-waving, albeit subtly (if fist-waving can be subtle) may be seen.
2.) He actually interviews people, but only at political venues. He’s not too keen on polling waitresses and customers at the Waffle House, unlike me and Peter. Incidentally, at the Waffle House in a Tennessee town where we stopped, there was one Obama supporter, one Romney supporter, one Paul supporter and one Santorum supporter.
*I ordered and enjoyed a big bowl of grits.

Read the whole thing. I also agree with Lisa in her post that Mrs. The Other McCain is a saint.

Whenever I signed on with Stacy, I guess it was after CPAC ’09? I remarked “You remind me of someone with whom I got into a lot of trouble.” Somewhere in the middle of his irreverent character is something fundamentally American. The major reason I, and, probably, the rest of the fan club, abet him is that we understand we lose that fundamentally American aspect at our peril.

Find your inner Stacy McCain or Lisa Graas, as the case may be, and let’s be about recovering the country.

Is Mitt Worried About Maryland?

I live in Hagerstown, Maryland. Last night the TV in my office was tuned to Fox News and, during the commercial breaks, they kept running an anti-Santorum ad from the pro-Romney “super PAC,” Restore Our Future.

This ad, portraying Rick Santorum as a soft-on-crime pork-barrel phony, was airing at least twice an hour on Fox News last night. I assume these spots were purchased through the local cable-TV provider. So . . .

Why is the Romney campaign worried about Maryland?

With all the “inevitability” talk, it seems strange to me that Romney’s super-PAC would be spending money to run attack ads against Santorum in a state that everybody expects to be an easy win for Mitt.

Frankly, I think the Louisiana results — which showed that Gingrich’s support has finally collapsed and conservatives have shifted decisively to Santorum — put the scare into Romney’s top advisors. Team Mitt must be a lot more worried than they’re letting on, or otherwise I wouldn’t be seeing all these ads on cable TV in Hagerstown. And because I want to be “fair and balanced,” here’s an ad for Rick Santorum:

I wish Santorum’s campaign was running ads in Hagerstown. Sarah Palin says “don’t retreat,” and I agree. Go give Rick some money so he can buy more ads.

(P.S.: Today my office TV is tuned to MSNBC. At least they’re not in the tank for Romney, and I don’t have to watch any super-PAC ads, either.)

“Why do you keep saying tax?” Breyer interjected, to more laughs.

At a high enough level of abstraction, this guy is an Administration comic unable to keep it straight while delivering his lines. In his decadence, he  recalls Stefon on SNL.

What this pack of jackwagons are about is tantamount to an Article V re-write of the Constitution. And the stare decisis argument is hogwash. If George Clooney personifies Progress, then the Constitution is a sweet young thing that has been pushed just a little too far over these last years, IYKWIMAITYD. Does stare decisis mean a pass for George to do whatever? I think not.
