If Mel Brooks were filming The History of the World, Part I, I can think of a top candidate for the role of piss boy. Back to back from Bluegrass Pundit, we first have him trying to defend Joe Biden’s 500 year victory lap on the bin Laden raid. In defense of Biden, he reviewed quite a number of YouTube clips on his laptop (a gift from Mitt Romney) before making that assertion:Yesterday, the DC Examiner quoted Carney, trying to refute the leadership displayed by Paul Ryan, as saying:

“You have to be aggressively and deliberately ignorant of the world economy not to know and understand that clean energy technologies are going to play a huge role in the 21st century. . .”

No, Carney, you ignorant tool: you have to be consistently and ideologically foolish about economics to think that government can out-think the market.

I’m coming down on the side of contempt.

Santorum Leads Latest Louisiana Polls; Newt Gingrich at LSU Tonight — Maybe

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama
Looking at the Politico candidate calendar, it’s slim pickings on the presidential campaign trail in Louisiana today: Mitt’s in DC, Rick Santorum’s got an event in San Antonio, Texas, and Newt Gingrich is scheduled for an 8 p.m. Tea Party forum at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Meanwhile, we have a new Rasmussen poll:

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is comfortably ahead in Louisiana with that state’s Republican Primary just two days away.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely GOP Primary Voters in Louisiana finds Santorum with a 12-point lead over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney – 43% to 31%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich who has pinned his hopes on capturing other Southern states beyond South Carolina and his native Georgia runs a distant third with 16% support. Texas Congressman Ron Paul comes in last with five percent (5%).

That result is included in a press release from the Santorum campaign that also includes this:

A Magellan Strategies poll of over 2,000 likely Republican voters finds that Rick Santorum leads Mitt Romney by a 37 – 24 margin.
Republican Presidential Contest:
Santorum:         37%
Romney:           24%
Gingrich:           21%
If Gingrich is removed from the race, 61% of Gingrich’s supporters would choose Rick Santorum, while only 22% of Gingrich supporters would choose Romney.

Leading by double digits two days before Saturday’s primary, then, Santorum’s schedule currently shows just one more event in Louisiana (Friday morning in Monroe) but why doesn’t Gingrich have a full campaign schedule today? Maybe . . .

Money problems underscore challenges
for Newt Gingrich’s campaign
Newt Gingrich’s financial problems and his fourth-place finish in the Illinois primary Tuesday underscore his serious challenges going forward in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
Gingrich’s campaign reported that it was $1.6 million in debt at the end of February, compared with $1.5 million it held in the bank, according to campaign filings released Tuesday night. . . .

One of our longtime readers sent me an e-mail yesterday grumbling about my use of the phrase “the bankrupt Newt.” My apologies for the offense, but . . . Neutral Objective Fact. Speaking of which, the best news story I could find about Gingrich’s event in Baton Rouge tonight was in the LSU student paper, the Reveille:

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich will make an appearance on campus Thursday at a Tea Party forum hosted by the LSU College Republicans.
The event is a Tea Party forum and straw poll, according to Austin Stukins, state grassroots coordinator for Louisiana Team Gingrich 2012. Stukins is an interior design junior at the University.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the event was planned for 8 p.m. in the Cox Auditorium. However, due to scheduling confusion, Baton Rouge Tea Party Treasurer Mark Holmes is working with Michelle Lowery, the University’s associate director for student involvement, to coordinate the event. Holmes said if the auditorium is unavailable, Lowery will book a different location.
Mark Holmes said Gingrich confirmed his appearance Tuesday afternoon. The Baton Rouge Tea Party is also extending the invitation to other presidential candidates.
Holmes said the event will include a forum and a straw poll.

It’s a 6-hour drive to Baton Rouge and I’ve got to get rolling pretty soon, but here’s some stuff to chew on:

Newt Gingrich has parked himself in the Pelican State in a last-ditch effort to regain some momentum, but this [Rasmussen] poll has nothing but bad news for him. . . . There isn’t much room for him to get traction against either candidate in front of him, and a poor third-place showing in the South would probably mean the end of his campaign, especially if he can’t win any delegates in Louisiana. A shutout would end whatever credibility he has left as a candidate even in a delegate-gathering sense.

Should Romney Trump Fehrnstrom?

By any objective measure, it’s of course unjust to fire a man for one errant remark. Politics, however, isn’t fair, and neither is the presidency. Mr. Romney’s problem is not his policies or programs; his problem is his credibility: many people just don’t believe he really believes what he is telling us. Firing Mr. Fehrnstrom would be a welcome signal that Mr. Romney is offended by any suggestion, no matter how much it might be later explained away, that he does not really believe what he says — and is ready, willing, and able to erase it away when he thinks he needs to.

What Fehrnstrom said was true. Punishing people for speaking the truth is precisely why politics is the toilet bowl it is today. Leadership is about telling the truth, courageously, repeatedly, and cheerfully in the face of blowback.

Let us celebrate truth:

  • Social Security is a Ponzi scheme.
  • Chronic deficit spending, and the attendant debt, are immoral.
  • Racism is an organizational tool of the Left, and a propaganda tool of theirs against the Right.
  • You were never a dead object in your mother’s womb between conception and some vague moment of transition from fetus to baby.
  • Nation building should always be done to the tune of Michael McDonald.

Mitt has a teachable moment here, where he can stand above the fray, and appeal to reason. He can double down on Fehrnstrom’s remarks and characterize the farce that our politics have become, where every appeal is fear, greed, envy and hate, and offer something enlightened. An appeal to reason and classical American values. Newt would do such with eloquence; Rick with passion.

I don’t think that will happen. Mitt continues to be the football coach with the lead, who plays ball-control offense in the 4th quarter, trying to run out the clock. The other team has a truly raging two minute drill, and Mitt has the pleasure of congratulating the other team for packin’ the gear in a way that Romney seems incapable of doing, for whatever reason.

. . .who were trying to make a circle. OK, my title reference might be just a little obscure, but look at what the Left has done:

I realize that Stacy has already flogged this horse, but I think we can boil it down for glue to stick a few points together:

  • Fehrnstrom has said possibly the most honest thing thus far about the GOP primaries as such, at least from the standpoint of the campaign. They’re all rock bands on tour right now, trying not to wreck any notes, and hoping to rack up the most sales by the end of the tour in Tampa.
  • The campaigns all understand that the are pouring words into the air. Winning the election means they can influence legislation, but the percentage chance of carrying out any significant change promised on the campaign trail is in the single digits.
  • Caffeinated Thoughts points to the new Etch-a-Sketch Mitt Romney site. Flog me gently with a morning star: Fehrnstrom found him a nerve!
  • The pressure and surreality of the campaign, to end on an obscure reference, will continue until it reaches a Peter James Bond crescendo, and I mean that strictly in an “Act of God” (not nefarious) way.

The irony is great here. The same right-wing bloggers who have pummeled Romney all along for being insufficiently conservative now say he’s telegraphing that he will be moderate in the general campaign. Huh? Indeed, Santorum has been complaining all along that Romney is too moderate. So if he’s been a moderate, he’d be fine as is in the general election, right? Santorum’s spokesman, after months of calling Romney a moderate, now claims he’s dying to get back to his true stripes — being a moderate.

See, Jennifer, think of the ship of state as about ready to go aground, and needing some hard right rudder to get out of shoal water. Having the Romney campaign telegraph bringing the rudder amidships not only brings the entire Romney campaign into question, but invites curiosity about over-achievement. You know, a little more left rudder. . .

And little RINO tools do precious little to dispel that gnawing anxiety.
