This Reminds Me of Stalingrad

Posted on | April 12, 2011 | 61 Comments

Earlier this afternoon, I remarked on Twitter how wonderful the Battle of Stalingrad was. Nazis killing Commies and Commies killing Nazis — killing each other by the thousands, day after day, week after week, for months on end.

It was a win-win, and the only sad thing is that the battle ended before every last one of those totalitarian bastards got killed.

Same deal with the dipsticks who are now suing HuffPo:

Today, a group of bloggers led by union organizer and journalist Jonathan Tasini filed a class-action suit against the Huffington Post, founder Arianna Huffington, and AOL, which acquired the news-and-blogs site in February.
Tasini, the lead plaintiff, has been a blogger for Huffpo since December 2005, when the site was just seven months old. According to his blogger page, however, he stopped posting on February 10, three days after the purchase of the site by AOL was announced.

There is no bad outcome possible. Either:

A. HuffPo is required to fork over millions of dollars to these crybaby free-bloggers; or

B. The crybaby free-bloggers, who are all a bunch of left-wing idiots, get screwed raw.

What’s not to like here? Legally, I don’t think the crybabies have a leg to stand on, but at least they’re forcing HuffPo to hire lawyers to defend against this nuisance suit. And while I think HuffPo will ultimately prevail — where’s the fine-print contractual agreement that obligates anybody to pay a dime to these free-blogging losers? — the biggest payoff will be in disabusing ex-HuffPosters of their idealistic notions that they were part of a  “progressive community.” Here’s my message to the HuffPo crybabies: Read more

Pregnant Portman Quits Veganism (Insert Puerile ‘Meat’ Double Entendre Here)

Posted on | April 12, 2011 | 25 Comments

A radical alteration in the delicate ballet of her diet!

Let not meat protein cross these lips!

Natalie Portman made the incredible shift from full-on vegan, which metamorphosis occurred in 2009 after reading Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals, to the far more widespread practice of vegetarianism:

“I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff,” she said during a Monday phone interview with the Q100 Bert Show in Atlanta. “I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy and that sort of stuff.”
“I know there are people who do stay vegan,” she added, “but I think you have to just be careful, watch your iron levels and your B12 levels and supplement those if there are things you might be low in in your diet.”

“She don’t eat meat but she sure like the bone!”

We are obliged to remind readers that today is the one-year anniversary of the notorious KFC “Double Down” sandwich.

This post began, BTW, with me urging it upon Smitty as a worthwhile blog topic. He worked dutifully on the post, and is responsible for the obscure punk-rock “New Age Girl” reference, but eventually abandoned the collaborative project after (a) he experienced a crisis of conscience due to his own wife’s gravid condition, (b) he reminded me he is deployed in Afghanistan with less-than-ideal bandwidth, and (c) I kept pestering him to add a specific reference:

So this post is kind of a global intercontinental joint collaboration — a complete clusterfark — and yet, I believe, still ‘Lanche-worthy because:

Jonathan Alter today added his name to the list of Newsweek writers who have left since the magazine’s merger with the Daily Beast. As Politico reports, Howard Fineman is now with Huffington Post, Michael Isikoff has joined NBC News, Fareed Zakaria is at Time magazine, and Evan Thomas is at Princeton University, while Jon Meacham, the feckless editor who presided over the debacle, is now at Random House.

Alter evidently left Newsweek with no new job lined up, but will continue as a columnist for Bloomberg News and contributor at HuffPo.

Sputnik or Fort Sumter?

While I was busy commemorating today’s 150th anniversary of the bombardment that began the Civil War, it seems those commie comrades at Google decided to go with the “Bolsheviks in Space” motif:

Bob Belvedere is suitably sarcastic: “Sure, why the Hell not. The old Soviet Union was not so bad, you know . . .”

We’ve come to expect such pinko propaganda from the Google gulag, but I never expected Instapundit to go soft on Communism!

Obama’s Libyan Stalemate

Posted on | April 12, 2011 | 1 Comment

The New York Times catches a whiff of the massive failure:

Three weeks ago, President Obama ordered American troops into the first “humanitarian war” on his watch, vowing to stop the forces loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi from massacring their own people. Mr. Obama’s hope was that a quick application of power from the air would tip the balance, and the Libyan rebels would do the rest.
Now . . . the question in Washington has boiled down to this: Can Mr. Obama live with a stalemate? . . .
If the country’s civil war drags on, Mr. Obama will almost certainly have to answer a rising chorus of critics that he entered the battle too late, began to exit too early, and overestimated a very inexperienced, disorganized rebel movement.

Hillary Clinton is still talking tough:

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton renewed the United States’ call for Khaddafy to step down and to leave Libya.
Clinton said the U.S. believes “there needs to be a transition that reflects the will of the Libyan people and the departure of Khaddafy from power and from Libya.”

Military officials appear much less confident that Qaddafi can be forced out of power by the Libyan rebels:

After weeks of U.S. and NATO bombardment, about one-third of Moammar Gadhafi’s ground armor has been destroyed, as well as most of the fixed air defense sites and aircraft, but a stalemate between government and rebel forces is emerging and could last for some time, according to a senior U.S. official with direct knowledge of the latest military assessments. . . .
The official said the latest U.S. and NATO view is that both sides essentially remain in their fixed positions — the rebels near Ajdabiya and the pro-government forces near al-Brega. . . .
“Neither side has the wherewithal to move,” the official said.
Rebels do not have the manpower, vehicles or weapons to make major advances. And while Gadhafi’s forces continue their attacks, especially in Misrata, the source said they are suffering from a lack of supplies, ammunition and fuel because of airstrikes. The official said that a major ground force movement would put Gadhafi’s units in the cross hairs of NATO airstrikes. . . .
While [the rebels] are holding on to Ajdabiya for the moment, the senior official said it is hard to imagine them making any further gains toward Tripoli.

Fort Sumter 1861: ‘Strike a Blow!’

Posted on | April 12, 2011 | 27 Comments

Today, a most momentous anniversary is the subject of my column at The American Spectator:

Visitors to Princeton, New Jersey, may find there the grave of a former New York state judge who died in 1919 at the advanced age of 90. Judge Roger Pryor was not from New Jersey, however, nor was he a native of New York. A Virginian by birth, as a young man Pryor had been one of the Old Dominion’s foremost secessionist “fire-eaters.” Impatient with Virginia’s reluctance to secede from the Union, Pryor traveled to South Carolina in April 1861 and gave a speech urging the newborn Confederacy to resist Abraham Lincoln’s attempt to reinforce the U.S. Army contingent holding the fort that commanded Charleston harbor.
“Strike a blow!” Pryor cried, assuring his “immense and enthusiastic audience” that if the crisis led to war, Virginia would secede immediately — “within an hour by Shrewsbury clock,” he said. . . .

Please read the whole thing. And by all means, sing along!

And here, by the way, is that grave in Princeton, N.J.:
