Where Do They Get All Those Great Movie Ideas? Of Course: They Steal Them!

Posted on | January 5, 2011 | 7 Comments

A pretty interesting list:

There have been 11 feature films released by Pixar, starting with 1995’s “Toy Story” and running all the way through 2010’s “Toy Story 3”. And, believe it or not, all 11 of them have been accused of ripping off the plot of another movie.

You can’t copyright a narrative arc, or else everyone who ever wrote a “meet cute” romantic comedy would be sued by Nora Ephron. Still, the resemblance between the robot in “Short Circuit” and the robot in “WALL-E” is probably too great to be mere coincidence.

Democrats Continue 2010 Campaign, Attack GOP for ‘Tax Cuts for Millionaires’

Posted on | January 5, 2011 | 3 Comments

Spokesman for Maryland Democrat Chris Van Hollen:

“It is nothing more than an old Republican scheme to provide back door tax cuts for millionaires and special interests, run up the deficit, and then hide the bill from the American people.”

Van Hollen, of course, was chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee during the 2010 election cycle.  How many times was this “tax cuts for millionaires” attack repeated in DCCC ads during the campaign? And what was the result?

Just keep it up, Democrats.

Groped by Donald Duck

Is nothing sacred?

A Pennsylvania woman who claims Donald Duck groped her at Disney’s Epcot theme park can have her day in court, a federal judge has ruled.
Disney must defend itself against April Magolon’s claims that the character grabbed her breast as she held her child at the Walt Disney World park and then joked about it.

She claims to be suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. I understand that Donald Duck has been forced to resign in disgrace from Epcot, and is now working as a TSA agent at the Orlando airport.

‘Voluptuous Blonde Ukrainian Nurse’

Posted on | January 5, 2011 | 1 Comment

That’s the kind of headline you don’t see often enough, and I guess we have Julian Assange to thank for it:

In what appears to be the first diplomatic casualty from the latest WikiLeaks revelations, the U.S. ambassador to Libya has returned to Washington and is likely to leave his post, U.S. officials said Tuesday.
Ambassador Gene Cretz, a veteran American diplomat, authored several secret cables to Washington that speculated on long-time Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s health, and described his personal proclivities, including his reliance on a “voluptuous” Ukrainian nurse. . . .
Cretz, who in November 2008 became the first U.S. ambassador to Libya since 1972, wrote in a leaked September 2009 cable, entitled “A Glimpse Into Libyan Leader Gadhafi’s Eccentricities,” that “Gadhafi relies heavily on his longtime Ukrainian nurse, Galyna . . . who has been described as a ‘voluptuous blonde.'”

If you’ll hit the tip jar, I’ll be glad to go to Tripoli and do some investigative reporting on this important story.

How Much Spending Will GOP Cut?

Posted on | January 5, 2011 | 6 Comments

Evidently not the $100 billion they promised:

Many people knowledgeable about the federal budget said House Republicans could not keep their campaign promise to cut $100 billion from domestic spending in a single year. Now it appears that Republicans agree.
As they prepare to take power on Wednesday, Republican leaders are scaling back that number by as much as half, aides say, because the current fiscal year, which began Oct. 1, will be nearly half over before spending cuts could become law.

More at Hot Air. I’m not sure that anyone will be outraged over this. The important thing is for Congress to move in the right direction and stop the kind of out-of-control deficit spending by which Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats increased the national debt by $5.2 trillion in four years.

Excerpts from Speaker Boehner’s opening speech today:

“The American people have humbled us. They have refreshed our memories as to just how temporary the privilege to serve is. They have reminded us that everything here is on loan from them. That includes this gavel, which I accept cheerfully and gratefully, knowing I am but its caretaker. After all, this is the people’s House. This is their Congress. It’s about them, not us. What they want is a government that is honest, accountable and responsive to their needs. A government that respects individual liberty, honors our heritage, and bows before the public it serves.”

That’s the written text, which doesn’t include the part where he gets all choked up and starts crying. (It’s OK, Mr. Speaker, we like the crying.) Boehner’s speech — crying and all — will be livestreamed.

Speaking of Congress, by the time you read this, I’ll be in D.C. getting acquainted with the 112th Congress. Or maybe pulled over on the side of I-270 getting acquainted with a Maryland state trooper. Either way, I don’t know how long I’ll be offline. I’ve got some more posts pre-scheduled for later today.

Mosques, Sharia and Sedition

Posted on | January 5, 2011 | 3 Comments

Frank Gaffney on Fox Business News:

“A mosque that is used to promote a seditious program — which is what sharia is, as practiced by Faisal Rauf, as practiced by Osama bin Laden, as practiced by the Saudis and the Iranians and so many others — that is not a protected religious practice. That is in fact sedition, and I think we have to be clear about that and treat it accordingly.”

Livestreaming the Constitution

Posted on | January 5, 2011 | 2 Comments

Friday’s planned reading of the U.S. Constitution in the House of Representatives — dismissed as a “stunt” by liberals — will be livestreamed via video on the Internet, Sissy Willis reports.

The 112th Congress will read the Constitution. The 111th Congress never even read the bills they voted for.

Pelosi: ‘We Have No Regrets … Deficit Reduction Has Been a High Priority’

Posted on | January 5, 2011 | 6 Comments

Exit, lying:

The facts:

When the Pelosi Democrats took control of Congress on January 4, 2007, the national debt stood at [$8.67 trillion]. The last day of the 111th Congress and Pelosi’s Speakership on December 22, 2010 the national debt was [$13.86 trillion] – a roughly $5.2 trillion increase in just four years. Furthermore, the year over year federal deficit has roughly quadrupled during Pelosi’s four years as speaker, from $342 billion in fiscal year 2007 to an estimated $1.6 trillion at the end of fiscal year 2010.
