Lawyer for Accused Columbia Professor Compares Incest to Homosexuality, Calls Daughter ‘Accomplice,’ Not ‘Victim’

Posted on | December 18, 2010 | 81 Comments

Asked by ABC News to comment on a proposal in Switzerland to decriminalize incest:

Epstein’s lawyer, Matthew Galluzzo, said that charges against his client were still “only allegations” that have not been proven.
“Academically, we are obviously all morally opposed to incest and rightfully so,” he told ABCNews.com. “At the same time, there is an argument to be made in the Swiss case to let go what goes on privately in bedrooms.”
“It’s OK for homosexuals to do whatever they want in their own home,” he said. “How is this so different? We have to figure out why some behavior is tolerated and some is not.”
But he questioned why, if the alleged incest was consensual, why Epstein’s daughter had been treated by prosecutors as “somehow a victim here, when she can be best described as an accomplice.”

Moral relativism is easier if your relatives are immoral.

Alie Mystal at Above the Law finds herself arguing with (a) Epstein’s lawyer, (b) “homophobes,” and (c) unnamed commenters whom she accuses of indulging “sick fantasies”:

Of course, incest is not reasonable. It’s not close to reasonable. The fact that so many people want to make it into something that sounds reasonable says a lot more about the sick fantasies of these guys and their subtle hatred of gays than it does about the legal justifications for incest. . . .
It really doesn’t matter if your twisted little minds can conceive of a “supermodel hot” daughter seducing her father while he is just sitting there trying to watch SportsCenter.

Whatever happened to “Thou shalt not”?

‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ Repeal Easily Clears Cloture Vote in Senate
UPDATE: Final Vote 65-31 for Repeal

Posted on | December 18, 2010 | 20 Comments

Only 33 “no” votes on the cloture roll call because, as everyone knows, Senate Republicans are all a bunch of closet cases.

So we now approach the day when uniformed service personnel — including ranking officers — will march in the Gay Pride Parade next to Dykes on Bikes and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

UPDATE: Six Republicans who voted yes: Scott Brown (Mass.), Susan Collins (Maine), Mark Kirk (Illinois), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Olympia Snowe (Maine) and George Voinovich (Ohio). Three Republicans did not vote: Jim Bunning (Kentucky), Judd Gregg (New Hampshire) and Orrin Hatch (Utah).

UPDATE II: Apparently two more Republicans jumped on board for the final vote. Will have roll call later.

UPDATE III: Roll call here — John Ensign (Nevada) and Richard Burr (North Carolina) both voted yes on final passage. CNN has a story.

Senate Kills DREAM Act

Posted on | December 18, 2010 | 6 Comments

Encouraging news everywhere nowadays:

The weeks of rallies, hunger strikes and sit-ins and the thousands of phone calls placed to Senate offices didn’t pay off for immigration activists.
The decade-old DREAM Act once again failed to break a filibuster in the Senate on Saturday morning, effectively killing the bill this year and shutting the door on what perhaps was the last chance for pro-immigration reform legislation until at least the 2012 election.

Via Memeorandum.

UPDATE: Michelle Malkin says five Democrats voted no: Jon Tester (Montana), Max Baucus (Montana), Kay Hagan (North Carolina), Ben Nelson (Nebraska) and Mark Pryor (Arkansas).

Because Democrats hate immigrants!

UPDATE II: Looks like Joe Manchin of West Virginia also voted no.

Why People Hate Lawyers

Posted on | December 18, 2010 | 3 Comments

“I get that this kind of explanation is part of the reason why people hate lawyers,” says a Red State blogger trying to defend Reince Priebus.

So if you hate lawyers, Reince Priebus is probably not your first choice for RNC chairman.

My biggest problem with Reince Priebus? The man can’t even decide what side of the “I before E” rule he’s on!

Dan Riehl might have other problems with him.

Beauchamp Brogan Distinguished Professor of Law Makes a Good Point

It’s fun calling Insty by his formal title and, yes, his New York Post column about property rights is excellent. Columbia University used eminent domain to seize private property and shut down two small businesses in Harlem. It was decidely not consensual.

‘A Striking Failure’

Posted on | December 18, 2010 | 6 Comments

“He was the man destined to save this country from his predecessor’s failures. He was the man who would end the war in Iraq, finish the war in Afghanistan, and shut down the prison at Guantanamo Bay. He was the man charged with rescuing the faltering American economy. He was the man who would usher in a post-racial era in an allegedly inherently racist American society. And he was the man who had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize based not on tangible accomplishment, but simply upon these very expectations. On all of these accounts, President Obama has been a striking failure. . . .”

Larry Flynt Donates $50,000 to Legal Defense of Accused Rapist Julian Assange

Posted on | December 17, 2010 | 12 Comments

Because Larry Flynt thinks rape is cool!

Well, maybe I paraphrase slightly, but Larry Flynt’s argument very much resembles the arguments of Michael Moore, and we know where he’s coming from, right? Sister Toldjah isn’t impressed.

Why are there no deep-pockets donors offering me $50,000? Probably because I never leaked any national security secrets. Or raped any Swedish socialist women.

On the other hand, Julian Assange didn’t get any recognition from The 8th Annual Right Wing News Conservative Blog Awards. Nice to get some recognition.

Now if I can just get some of y’all to hit the tip jar . . .
