Herman Cain Fever: Catch It!

Posted on | December 19, 2010 | 14 Comments

Ben Smith of Politico compares Herman Cain to . . . Dennis Kucinich?

Eh, he means it as a compliment. And he also quotes a Tweet by top Iowa GOP operative Tim Albrecht:  “Prediction: Herman Cain is going to have some serious legs when he begins visiting Iowa.”

Matthew Newman at Race 4 2012:

Now, Cain has said that he’s considering a bid for President in 2012. Should we take such a bid seriously? I’m not sure yet – he does have quite a fan base among conservative activists and knows how to fire up a crowd, but isn’t very well known to the general public. That said, he’s someone to keep track of – with a strong and motivated fan base, with enough money/organizational support he could make waves in caucus states.

You can vote for Herman Cain in the Red State poll. Go join the Citizens4Cain Facebook page and follow Citizens4Cain on Twitter. I first interviewed Herman Cain for a May 1, 2007, Washington Times story:

Speaking out with a smile
Radio host Herman Cain keeps cancer, GOP in line
By Robert Stacy McCain
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
ATLANTA — Herman Cain laughs a lot, and he has lots to be happy about — including a successful business career and a popular talk radio show. Inside the Atlanta studios of WSB Radio on a recent Saturday, he told his listeners about a local newspaper columnist who wrote that “being a black Republican is not only oxymoronic, it’s simply plain old-fashioned moronic” and singled out Mr. Cain as a “token” and a “sorry opportunist.”
“He forgot – I’ve got a radio show,” Mr. Cain says as he issues an on-air challenge for the columnist to call in, then goes to commercial, laughing all the while.
Such cheerfulness might seem surprising for a man who, in March 2006, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver. After two months of chemotherapy, Mr. Cain underwent surgery in August — doctors removed one-third of his colon and 70 percent of his liver, he says — and then it was another two months of chemotherapy. And he is laughing.
“Now you’re looking at a man who’s cancer-free — and all my liver’s grown back,” says the 61-year-old former executive. But don’t call him a “survivor,” he says. “I’m a winner,” says Mr. Cain, former chief executive officer of the Godfather’s Pizza chain.
A graduate of Atlanta’s Morehouse College, he worked for the Department of the Navy and Coca-Cola before joining the Pillsbury Co. in 1977. When Pillsbury acquired the Burger King restaurant chain, he went to work managing the chain’s operations in the Philadelphia area. His success with Burger King won him appointment in 1986 as president of Godfather’s, another Pillsbury acquisition. He helped turn around the division and then led a management team that bought the chain from Pillsbury.
Now retired from the restaurant business, Mr. Cain keeps busy. He is a member of four corporate boards (including Hallmark Cards and Whirlpool), a member of the Morehouse board of trustees, an author and syndicated columnist, a regular guest on Fox News Channel’s “Cost of Freedom” business program and, most recently, a radio talk-show host, frequently filling in on Atlanta-based Neal Boortz’s syndicated program as well as hosting his own two-hour show each Saturday.
Then there is politics. In 2004, Mr. Cain sought the Senate seat vacated by the retirement of Sen. Zell Miller, Georgia Democrat. In the Republican primary, he placed second to Johnny Isakson, who later won the Senate seat. But Mr. Cain’s outspoken conservatism during the campaign won him many admirers – including Mr. Miller, who wrote the foreword to Mr. Cain’s 2005 book, “They Think You’re Stupid: How Democrats Lost Your Vote and What Republicans Must Do to Keep It.”
What Republicans have done lately doesn’t please Mr. Cain, who expresses the same frustrations that many other conservatives have voiced about the party in recent years.
“They didn’t stick to principles,” he says, when asked why Republicans lost control of Congress in the 2006 elections. He criticizes Republicans in Washington for spending irresponsibly, failing to pass Social Security reform and, especially, not heeding their grass-roots supporters on immigration policy.
“They were not listening to people outside Washington. If they would have listened, they wouldn’t have lost,” says Mr. Cain, explaining that he finds people are eager to tell him their views on political issues.
“I’m like a walking poll. .. It’s not scientific, but it’s pretty darned consistent,” he says of what he heard about immigration last year “Republicans were screaming, ‘Secure the borders first.’ ”
Republicans in Washington “are too afraid of their political shadows,” Mr. Cain says. He adds that many of his colleagues on corporate boards are so “disgusted” with Republicans that they have stopped contributing to the party, telling him: “When they start acting like Republicans, I’ll write some more checks.”
Considering the party’s prospects in 2008, he asks, “Where’s the excitement? Where’s the fun? There is none.”
Yet, Mr. Cain is clearly having lots of fun. He performs his two-hour radio show standing up, and provokes a reaction with his criticism of the Rev. Al Sharpton (“He gets away with inciting racial tensions, but doesn’t want to be held accountable.”) and liberals who, he says, use “name-calling .. to discourage black people from thinking for themselves.”
Soon, callers fill the phone lines, waiting to share their opinions with Mr. Cain, who keeps smiling and laughing even when talking with angry callers who disagree with him.
Mr. Cain is grateful for simple pleasures such as “watching my grandkids grow up,” he says, recalling the months he spent in treatment after his cancer diagnosis. “I was saying my prayers .. and I had a whole lot of people sending up prayers for me,” he says.
“You don’t stop living because you’re fighting cancer. .. If everybody stopped living because they were fighting cancer, one-third of the adult population would be sitting home waiting to die,” Mr Cain says, adding that he has no interest in sitting around. “Death’s going to have to catch me, and it’s going to have to run fast.”

UPDATE: Cubachi is on the Cain Train. So is Doug at Daley Gator.

UPDATE II: News from New Hampshire, where John DiStaso of the Manchester Union Leader reports:

Veteran GOP operative and former congressional staffer David Tille has become active on behalf of conservative author and potential presidential hopeful Herman Cain. Tille drove Cain during Cain’s visit to the Manchester GOP Christmas Party last Friday and plans follow-up meetings with Cain’s camp.

That is a typical reaction: People who meet Herman Cain become Cain boosters.

Petty Grifters Gone Big-Time

Posted on | December 19, 2010 | 4 Comments

Dan Collins calls attention to the fact that some charities aren’t all that charitable — that is to say, not a lot of what they collect goes to whatever cause it is they claim to support. Dan ends his post with a link to a truly horrifying story.

This is Edward Garcia Jr., 36, and his wife, Melissa Hope Garcia, 25, a couple of criminals from York, Pennsylvania, who made their way to Hollywood, California, where they were staying in a fleabag motel. According to police, the Garcias met up with a guy named Herbert Tracy White, who liked to help out people in need.

Apparently, White tried to help the Garcias — and they robbed him, killed him and dismembered his corpse.

It’s a depressingly familiar story: Small-time criminals often go along for years, doing various hustles, scams and ripoffs — a little dope-dealing here, a little burglary there, the occasional car theft or armed robbery. And then one day, they commit a heinous atrocity that makes front-page headlines. From In Cold Blood to Helter Skelter, from the two punks who killed Matthew Shepard to the weirdo who kidnapped Elizabeth Smart, the tale of the petty criminal who eventually makes the major leagues of serious, shocking crime is a very old one.

Don’t Deport the Hotties!

Posted on | December 19, 2010 | 4 Comments

Donald Douglas posts a very attractive picture of Penelope Cruz — come to think of it, are there any other kind of pictures of her? — by way of discussing birthright citizenship.

Walter Hudson at NewsReal explains that Cruz and her husband Javier Bardem “are opting to deliver their son in the United States rather than in Spain,” to wit:

[T]he actors’ wish is for their son to have dual citizenship, and since the two own an estate in Hollywood — and Spain grants citizenship to foreign born if a parent is born in Spain — it is quite a convenient situation.

That quote is from a story at the Fox News Latino site (which has since apparently been taken down) that bore the headline:

Penelope Cruz And Javier Bardem
Are Having An Anchor Baby

To which a Hispanic group responded with indignation, saying that the term “anchor baby” is an insulting racial slur. You can argue about that in the comments, if you wish. My point is that, while I am adamantly opposed to amnesty for illegal aliens, there is one loophole to my otherwise universal xenophobia: Don’t Deport the Hotties!

If beautiful women somehow manage to sneak across our borders, or overstay their visas, let’s just pretend we didn’t notice, OK? Because if there’s one thing our country can never have too many of, it’s beautiful women.

And did I mention that Donald Douglas has a very attractive picture of Penelope Cruz at his site?

Did Obama’s Election Cause Outbreak of Racist Grafitti in Philadelphia?

That’s what is claimed by an attorney representing plaintiffs in a civil-rights lawsuit:

Several black men who were contracted to work at the Sunoco refinery in Philadelphia were forced to clean up racial slurs written about them on bathroom walls, the men claim in a federal civil rights lawsuit. . . .
The six plaintiffs, led by Kenneth Hall, 40, of Philadelphia, were all employees of Advanced Speciality Contractors, of Aston, which was contracted to work on a project at the Sunoco refinery on Passyunk Avenue near 61st Street in Southwest Philadelphia, the suit said.
White employees of other companies subcontracted for the project . . . harassed the men because of their race, the suit says. . . .
Along with the nooses, the suit claims racial slurs were written daily on bathroom and port-a-potty walls including “whites only, no n – – – – – – allowed” and “all n – – – – – – should go back into slavery.”
The plaintiffs, who performed various jobs around the refinery including janitorial work and general labor, were forced to clean and paint over the slurs, according to their attorney, Kevin Lovitz.
“You are being made to clean up what is the most heinous racial conduct you could imagine – against yourself!” Lovitz said. “And they couldn’t stop it.”
He said the harassment mostly occurred in 2008 and 2009 and coincided with President Obama’s campaign and election, which he said provoked negativity among the refinery’s white workers.
“That is the backdrop of why these things may have been so focused at the time,” he said. “There was a lot of negativity with regard to the election on a racial level.”

Barrett Brown Gets Himself Banned from LGF and League of Ordinary Gentlemen

Posted on | December 19, 2010 | 17 Comments

Somebody brought this up in the comments on another thread. Barrett Brown — who when last heard from here, had his lawyer threatening me with a libel action — has now in the space of a few days gotten himself banned from both Little Green Footballs and the League of Ordinary Gentlemen.

As to the LGF banning, Brown — who seems to be a Julian Assange fanboy — found himself accused by Lizardoid Enforcer-in-Chief Killgore Trout of being a Russian or Chinese agent. Read more

Four Words You Probably Never Wanted to Hear: ‘Demi Lovato Sex Video’

Posted on | December 19, 2010 | 9 Comments

OK, “alleged Demi Lovato sex video.” She seems determined to set a new world record for a Disney princess career/personal meltdown:

Just when you thought Demi Lovato’s life couldn’t get any more complicated, we’re hearing that a sex tape featuring the barely legal singer/actress could leak any day now! . . .
[A] source reveals that the teenage starlet videotaped herself getting it on with a young man over the summer. . . .
The source added that Demi was “no stranger to filming her sexual exploits,” and a tape of Demi and one of her boy toys “will surface soon.”

For the record, Demi’s representative told TMZ: “We would ask serious news outlets to strongly consider the source of this story before they regurgitate it.”

Yeah, because it’s not like there’s any real reason to believe that Demi’s gone sleazy, right? Read more

Oh, My: Guess Who’s Getting On Board the Herman Cain 2012 Bandwagon?

Posted on | December 18, 2010 | 47 Comments

Yes, even self-described “candy-ass” blogger Allahpundit:

I know the basics of his bio — accomplished CEO, talk-radio host, cancer survivor — but not much more beyond that. Even so, it got my attention a few days ago when he won Red State’s 2012 “tournament,” topping Mike Pence in the semifinal and Palin in the final. Is that because Cain’s a Red State favorite or is the grassroots support for him out there broader than anyone realizes right now?

Read the whole thing, because Allah does some pretty serious analysis. But we don’t need no stinkin’ analysis.

What we need is an online grassroots army. Go join the Citizens4Cain Facebook page and follow Citizens4Cain on Twitter.

Via the Minority Report, here’s the Herminator on Greta Van Susteren Friday night:

Assange: ‘The Worst Sex Ever’

Posted on | December 18, 2010 | 28 Comments

The Guardian publishes an extensive account of the two Swedish women’s sexual assault accusations against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange:

That evening, Miss A held a party at her flat. One of her friends, “Monica”, later told police that during the party Miss A had told her about the ripped condom and unprotected sex. Another friend told police that during the evening Miss A told her she had had “the worst sex ever” with Assange: “Not only had it been the world’s worst screw, it had also been violent.”

Read the whole thing. BTW, despite the Guardian‘s use of the pseudonyms “Miss A” and “Miss W,” published accounts have previously identified the women as Anna Ardin, 31, and Sofia Wilen, 26.

Just asking questions: Is there some kind of connection between Assange’s WikiLeaks activity and his (allegedly) predatory sexual habits? I mean, wouldn’t both fit rather neatly into the personality type of a sociopathic narcissist?

UPDATE: Welcome, Instapundit readers!

UPDATE II: Linked by Clayton Cramer, Republican Redefined and Little Miss Atilla.

Meanwhile, someone in the comments here suggests I’ve maligned the sexual prowess of all sociopathic narcissists by associating them with Julian Assange. Look, if you’ve slept with a sociopathic narcissist and enjoyed it, that’s your business. But if she starts stalking you like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction, don’t blame me.
