Kaitlyn Hunt’s Lawyer, Having Failed Her Client, Now Scapegoats the Prosecution

Kaitlyn Hunt: Now she’s where guilty perverts belong.

Anyone who watched Tuesday’s hearing in the Kaitlyn Hunt case knows two things: “Free Kate” is guilty as hell, and her lawyer is an idiot.

Let’s admit that even a good lawyer would have difficulty representing a client as guilty as Kaitlyn Hunt. Bad cases require bad arguments, and if the guilty client insists on fighting the case all the way to trial, any attorney who accepts the fee is going to be obliged to look like an incompetent idiot from time to time. But read this statement issued by Kaitlyn Hunt’s lawyer today and see if you can spot a certain — what shall we call it? — ironic lack of self-awareness:

Translation: “My perverted client is guilty as hell, and it’s so unfair of prosecutors to keep pointing out what a guilty pervert she is!”

SHE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE PLEA BARGAIN!

  1. This is one long whinge, which comes down to: “I suck at multi-tasking, I can’t manage my workload, Kate Hunt is the Client From Hell™, but I love them suckers sending me money, so I’m going to play this as long as I can, and if that means demagoguery, deceit, and douchebaggery, so be it.”

  2. Note that attorney Julia Graves said that the “alleged victim” doesn’t agree with how her parents are handling things. This may or may not be true, but it’s an effort by Miss Hunt’s attorney to split the victim and her parents.,

Part of Miss Hunt’s problems stem from the actions of the victim. Miss Hunt (allegedly) gave the victim an iPod through which Miss Hunt could send messages to the victim, but the victim should have just thrown it in the garbage; by keeping it, she has enabled Miss Hunt to commit further crimes. She has been just as stupid as Kaitlyn Hunt.

  3. Not to be stereotypical here or anything, but Indian River County isn’t exactly Miami, it does sound to me like Julia Graves was in WAY over her head

  4. I understand she is a lawyer for Kate, but blaming the victim? That is pathetic for anyone let alone a lawyer.

  5. This person is a lawyer? When I post on this blog, I make typos all the time, plus there is the woefully-named autocorrect. When a lawyer, however, DRAFTS A STATEMENT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION, it should reflect some of that person’s best writing. Compare and contrast the statement above with Ken White’s writing at Popehat on a BAD day for him. She should be embarrassed, not only because of her whining, her apparent inability to manage her case load, her demonizing of the parents and SA – plus the victim (while pretending not to do it), but because of her poor English language skills.

  6. Let’s stipulate that Julia Graves is not America’s best defense attorney. Still, with a client as guilty as Kaitlyn Hunt, who refuses to accept a plea bargain, what are you supposed to do? You’re negotiating from a position of weakness, with a client who is clearly too stupid to understand how the legal system works.

  7. She may have advised Kate to take the deal and was ignored. This may, in part, explain why the prosecution wanted evidence that these plea offers were, in fact, being offered to Kate Hunt.

  8. Her writing is as poor as her legal reasoning. Memo to counsel for the defense: by law, a 14 year old CANNOT CONSENT to sex, therefore it was not consensual. Duh.

  9. Plus, get a load of the logic: the 14 year old was mature enough to consent, but she is too immature not to be confused and withstand . . . THE BIBLE! But 20,000 text messages, threats coupled with the reward of sex and approval if the victim toed the line, naked pics . . . nah, nothing to see here.

  10. For pity’s sake, was this statement proof-read by anyone literate?

It’s stupid, and incoherent, and hardly comprehensible.

  11. Irrelevant. She’s a young teenager, which is just a synonym for “bad judgement”.

That’s why there are laws. To protect the young, and the surrounding society.

  12. Speaking from my own experience in Florida’s legal system and agreeing with you as well, I’m flabbergasted that Graves would let the Hunts walk into court looking like they just got out of bed (the 1st appearance). It looked as if they spent no time preparing. A case with these implications it would seem imperative obvious details like that would’ve been accounted for

  13. Yes – we expect kids to exercise poor judgment to a degree (please note that I said to a degree), and to be the objects of predators. That is why we have these laws and why we phase in adult privileges with the attendant responsibilities.

  14. Imagine trying to get that group of people to listen to good advice.

I’m being very kind, and assuming that she at least tried to give them good advice.

  15. This damn attorney is a out and out liar. It was Kaitlyn’s parents who took this case to the court of public opinion. With this stupid lawyer in tow, I might add. If the prosecutor had filed such a vanilla motion as this fool suggests they (the Hunts) would have again spun this as harmless and just more hate directed at Kate.

And please, quit circumventing the victim’s parents you foolish twit. Stop putting words in the victim’s mouth. It’s disgusting the way this woman panders to the public.

  16. Bad rhetoric in service of bad logic. The two so often travel in tandem that we come to expect this combination. The law is the law, and in this case the law quite clearly states that consent of the underage victim cannot be a defense. Yet this has been the fundamental argument of the “Free Kate” movement from the start, i.e., because the 14-year-old was hot to trot, Kate really isn’t guilty of anything. Also, the “argument” is made — and I add the scare-quotes because it isn’t actually an argument — that because they attended the same high school, it’s wrong to punish Kate.

By this bizarre logic, every freshman who walks in the door of Sebastian River High School is fair game for the predatory sexuality of the oldest senior in the school. Once you buy into that way of thinking, well, if it’s wrong to punish a 19-year-old high school senior for banging a freshman, what’s so wrong about a 23-year-old teacher hooking up with a 16-year-old junior?

Either you respect the law, or you don’t. If they were to change the law to make 14-year-olds fair game (as Kaitlyn’s supporters apparently want to do), then next you’d have people arguing for sex with 13- and 12-year-olds.

    THIS NEEDS TO STOP, PERIOD.

  17. RSM – speaking of typos, (don’t shoot the messenger) – double check your Spectator piece – “she gave the younger girl an iPod, which
enabled her to received messages.” I think you meant “receive.”

  18. When this goes to trial, wouldn’t having “ineffective counsel” work to Hunt’s benefit when her inevitable conviction is inevitably appealed? Perhaps the Hunt’s handlers at the ACLU are actually eyeballing the U.S. Supreme Court with this…

  19. Agenda driven logic, we want to do what we want to do. You brilliantly made the point that this is about more than just this one victim. This is about protecting every child in that school and every other school in this nation.

  20. I sometimes wonder if the attorney, in pure exasperation, doesn’t feel like lodging an appeal on the grounds of ineffective assistance by the client!

  21. It’s now way beyond that. The plea bargain offer is completely irrelevant, and actually always has been, given they serial way Kate reoffends and reoffends.

  22. They gave birth, fed and clothed the child. That’s all the parenting allowed, evidently, unless you count paying for STD treatment.
