2 Cops Shot in San Diego; 1 Dead

Posted on | July 29, 2016 | 9 Comments

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports:

Two San Diego police gang-detail officers making a traffic stop in Southcrest late Thursday night were shot several times, one mortally wounded, triggering a massive police search into the daylight hours. One suspect is in custody. . . .
The slain officer was shot several times, rushed to a hospital in a patrol car but died at a hospital despite life-saving efforts, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said early Friday. The wounded officer underwent surgery early Friday and was expected to survive. . . .
There was no update on the condition of the suspect, who was taken into custody about 11:30 p.m. in the Chollas Creek ravine just south of the site of the shooting. Officers had found a blood trail leading toward him.

A second suspect was reportedly in a standoff with police. More from Fox News and the Los Angeles Times. (Via Memeorandum.)

In this particular case, probably not #BLM related, but typical gangbangers.

Bet you a nickel the perps are Dems though.

The city where I was born and raised sure has gone downhill. My uncle used to be a cop in San Diego. He was the first cop to stop me after I got my drivers license.

Condolences to the families and may the perps burn in hell.

Southcrest is along the 5 freeway, south of Barrio Logan and north of National City–about 5-8 miles from the Mexican border. The neighborhood is about 85% Hispanic, with most of those homes speaking Spanish as a primary language. Very few blacks in that area. (Very few whites in that area for that matter.)

The officers who were shot were on gang detail. The shooter (Jesse Michael Gomez) and the slain officer (Officer Jonathan “J.D.” DeGuzman) were both Hispanic . This isn’t a racial issue, and, from everything we know, it was not inspired by Black Lies Matter. More may come out later, but so far, it seems not. It’s possible that the Black Lies Matter zeitgeist might have made it more likely that a gang member would shoot a cop.

The second suspect may also be Hispanic (judging only from his name) and the second officer, who is recovering, is white. The second suspect was tear-gassed out of his house this morning.

Both suspects are over 40–the shooter is 52–so these guys are definitely career criminals with records.

The police chief, Shelly Zimmerman, worked with the slain officer back when she was a lieutenant, so the loss was personal for her as well as professional. The former police chief was also choking back feeling on TV today. It’s been hard on a lot of folks around town. San Diego is like a large small town.

The slain officer had previously received a purple heart for a stab wound in the line of duty.

Earlier in the week, San Diego had a “Hug a Cop Day”: http://www.kson.com/media/audio-channel/hug-cop-day

Local radio host Carl DeMaio seemed to suggest we need another one of these.

“Condolences to the families and may the perps burn in hell.”

    Right on, brother.

“He was the first cop to stop me after I got my drivers license.”

He was probably just getting you used to it.

This is all leading to either total chaos or a total police state. Thanks, Obama.

The best way to not get shot is to not get shot at, and the entire law enforcement profession has gone to great lengths to create an aura of invincibility for that very purpose. BLM created an environment in which cops have been ambushed again and again with devastating effect. One inevitable result will be more ordinary criminals taking shots, and more officers dying as a result. That’s on BLM.
