Silicon Valley et Hamas delenda sunt.

I picked a bad decade to give up smoking and drinking

You would think that after a year or so of lugging my Surface tablet around the continent, including too many runs to Vegas to remember without the use of my phone’s calendar, that I’d have a checklist of stuff I’m going to need while on the road: syringes for insulin, magazines for my pistol…and necessary cables for the Surface. Which is all by way of admitting that this week’s linkagery was derailed by the fact that I absent-mindedly left a 4″ USB-B/USB-C cable sitting on my desk at home when I headed down to Las Vegas this week for an NSSAB meeting, which is why I’m scrambling to get caught up tonight and tomorrow. Probably not going to be able to link everything that deserves attention, but at least I’ll get all the Substackery included and most of the other important stuff. As always, I recommend that you follow the links to the home pages of the various and sundry blogs, because it’s just not possible to link to everything, especially for blogs like Behind the Black, Legal Insurrection, and Power Line who put out more content than any five linkmonglers could cover.

Speaking of the Nevada Security Site Advisory Board, we’re going to be closing up shop at the end of fiscal year 2027 since the environmental management & remediation that we’re providing oversight for is almost done, a year ahead of schedule. I’m going to miss being on the NSSAB; it’s been very educational in quite a few ways, and while the drive to and from Las Vegas is exhausting at my age (I’ll be 67 next month) it is nice to have the Department of Energy reimburse me for mileage, a couple nights in a decent hotel, and per diem. Guess I’ll just have to write and sell more fiction to make up for it.

How Minnesota Became a Crime Magnet

Posted on | September 6, 2026 | No Comments

Carlton Johnson II died Wednesday in a shootout with police at an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis. Johnson killed two people and wounded five others, including two police officers.

The Shoreline Plaza apartment building, formerly known as the Loring Towers, offers “affordable housing,” subsidized by taxpayers. Johnson paid only $105 a month for his apartment, and guess what? He wasn’t even from Minneapolis! He was from Chicago.

This is what’s wrong with Minnesota, generally. It’s why Somalis collected millions of dollars in fraudulent benefits. The state is so liberal, so generous in terms of giving out various kinds of welfare, that it naturally attracts scum, including criminals from Chicago who move there and get ridiculous “affordable housing” subsidies.

Taxpayer subsidies to support a public menace:

Carlton Johnson II had a long history of threats and violence that ended Wednesday when he allegedly shot six people in downtown Minneapolis, killing two and wounding two police officers.
In June, Johnson, 35, allegedly walked around Shoreline Plaza — where Wednesday’s mass shooting occurred — waving a gun and threatening to kill someone, according to court records.
That and other menacing behavior had led Shoreline Plaza’s owner to launch eviction proceedings the same month.
One man who lived in the building even went to police and accused Johnson of threatening him with a gun on June 25, though no charges were filed.
Johnson, who police say was killed in an “exchange of gunfire” after Wednesday’s rampage, was also hit with a restraining order in 2023 for allegedly sexually assaulting and threatening a woman, Hennepin County court records say.
In that case, he allegedly sent the woman a string of 120 text messages and pretended to be a police detective. “I was terrified by his numerous explicit death threats,” the woman said in a court document. . . .
Johnson racked up 34 separate criminal cases in the Twin Cites. Most of those cases involved traffic violations but he was also charged in two assaults and two misdemeanor drug cases.
In 2018, Johnson told his sister he “was not afraid to shoot people in the face” when she booted him out of her apartment. He was charged with domestic assault after his sister complained he had roughed her up.
The domestic assault charge was dropped after Johnson pleaded guilty to misdemeanor property damage. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, but 86 days of the sentence were stayed under the terms of his probation agreement.
At the time of this week’s shooting, Johnson was subject to an ongoing child protection matter involving the 4-year-old daughter of the same woman who filed for the 2023 harassment order, Hennepin County court records show. Johnson was the girl’s father.
A 4-year-old girl who is Johnson’s daughter was in the apartment complex Wednesday, and her mother was one of the shooting victims. The girl was not physically harmed and was evacuated from the scene, according to people familiar with the investigation.
Court records indicate that Johnson had two daughters with different mothers, and it remains unclear which mother was the victim in Wednesday’s shooting.

The combination of generous welfare benefits and a lenient criminal justice system have turned Minnesota into a magnet for criminals. And as long as the people of Minnesota keep electing Democrats, the problem will keep getting worse. Amy Klobuchar is running for governor of Minnesota to continue this disastrous policy. Lisa Demuth is the Republican opponent who wants to put an end to it.

FMJRA 2.0: More Misery At Home

Posted on | September 6, 2026 | No Comments

Well, it could have been worse for my Senators. We got swept by the Reds at RFK, then got on the train to Philly and took two out of three from the Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium. That leaves us at 8*15, half a game behind the Red Sox, five games behind the division-leading Twins. Next up is a two-game set against the O’s (10-13) and three games against the Cubs (16-9), which marks the start of a home stand in which we’ll face the Yankees and the A’s. Here’s hoping the mythical home field advantage makes an appearance in there somewhere.
