BARNEY FRANK WILL RETIRE UPDATES: ‘Corrupt Creature of Washington Who Helped Usher in the Great Recession’; Maxine Waters to Become Top Dem on Banking Committee

by Smitty

Via Stacy’s close friend Tabitha Hale and Weasel Zippers, you know something is headed in the right direction when those that are utterly wrong start heading for the exit.

There is to be a 1300 EST press conference, wherein the relatively un-sordid details are trotted about for public consumption.
Along with whatever else he packs, this blog would like to suggest a couple of other bits of rubbish that can go with him:

Wow, I guess the deck I scanned those cards from might be collectable. I can’t seem to find the web site anymore.

UPDATE (RSM): The Boston Globe:

US Representative Barney Frank, the state’s highest-profile congressman and one of the nation’s leading liberal voices after being among its first openly gay elected officials, has decided not to seek reelection next year.
A close adviser told the Globe today that the new district in which Frank would have had to run next year was a major factor in his decision. While it retained his Newton stronghold, it was revised to encompass more conservative towns while losing New Bedford, a blue-collar city where the Democrat had invested a lot of time and become a leading figure in the region’s fisheries debate. . . .

Not a word about Frank’s scandal-tainted legacy and involvement in creating the housing bubble.

Now a Memeorandum thread.

UPDATE II (RSM): Jazz Shaw at Hot Air:

The one thing Barney has going for him is a massive amount of seniority. If he and his party were solidly of the opinion that they would be taking back the majority in the House next fall, he would doubtless be back at the front of the line for one or more of any number of influential committee leadership spots. That translates to a lot of power and influence and would probably make it a bit harder to just walk away. Does this sudden exit indicate that the Democrats have pretty much given up hope of that happening?

UPDATE III (RSM): Bryan Preston at PJ Tatler:

He deserves to be considered a corrupt creature of Washington who helped usher in the Great Recession. Frank was among the Democrats who prevented scrutiny and reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac when it could have prevented the economic collapse. Republicans at the time wanted more oversight and regulation of Fannie and Freddie. Frank and many of his fellow Democrats stood in the way.

Bryan provides video clips of Barney defending the bubble-makers, and also quotes Jonah Goldberg on the dread consequences:

By the way, with Frank retiring Maxine Waters is slated to be the ranking Dem on the banking committee.

Lord, help us: Maxine makes Barney look like a pillar of virtue.

UPDATE IV (RSM): Michelle Malkin on Barney’s future career:

Top Barney Frank job prospect: Advising wealthy Wall Street clients how to weasel out of the Dodd-Frank regulatory monstrosity. Cha-ching!

Read the whole thing: She also includes Ladd Ehlinger’s famous “Dancing Barney” video. Advice to bloggers: Everything you need to know about aggregated commentary, you can learn by watching Malkin when big news breaks: Update, update, update!

UPDATE V (RSM): Pete Da Tech Guy is doing the Happy Hance on behalf of all honest and decent citizens of Massachusetts (alas, they are a beleaguered a minority). Pete is in Newton, where Barney’s press conference begins at 1 p.m. ET. More bye-bye Barney blogging at Patterico, American Thinker and Sister Toldjah.

Linked at Temple of Mut — thanks!

UPDATE VI (RSM): Welcome, Instapundit readers! Love his link to Althouse, wondering why Massachusetts hates the rest of America so much.

And it’s “just one damned thing after another,” says Bill Quick.

  1. He’s probably already been tipped that he’s on the short list for a cabinet (or maybe even) judicial appointment after next November’s election.

Or perhaps he expects Kerry to retire from the Senate (perhaps to replace Joe Biden) and wants to be appointed or elected to that seat.

  2. Not only was Frank either architect or co-architect of virtually every counterproductive banking and finance law of the last 25 years, he is also corrupt to his very soul.

He used his position to influence the bonuses for his lover, who was an executive at Fannie or Freddie, and to prevent any needed reforms which might have prevented the crisis or at least ameliorated its effects from even being considered.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  3. It’s a classic, all right.

Now we have to get used to the idea we won’t have Bawney to kick awound anymowa.

Somehow, I think we will muddle through.  The thought of Maxine Waters as the new image of the Democratic Party on banking and finance issues will help.

And you won’t have to do much editing on her videos.

  4. sniff . . . the end of an era.  Time to pull out an old Tull tune that is somehow appropriate:

From a dead beat to an old greaser, here’s thinking of you.
    You won’t remember the long nights;
Coffee bars; black tights and white thighs
In shop windows where blonde assistants fully-fashioned a world made
Of dummies (with no mummies or daddies to reject them).
When bombs were banned every Sunday and the Shadows played F.B.I.
And tired young sax-players sold their instruments of torture —
Sat in the station sharing wet dreams of Charlie Parker,
Jack Kerouac, Ren’e Magritte, to name a few of the heroes
Who were too wise for their own good — left the young brood to
    Go on living without them.

Old queers with young faces — who remember your name,
    Though you’re a dead beat with tired feet;
    Two ends that don’t meet.
To a dead beat from an old greaser.

Think you must have me all wrong.
    I didn’t care, friend. I wasn’t there, friend,
If it’s the price of pint that you need, ask me again.

  5. […] Also, @FilmLadd produced a hilarious ad for Sean Bielat who ran in 2010 against Bawney Fwank which Michelle Malkin used in her sendoff post to the outgoing POS. Unfortunately, it’s been rumored that paragon of truth and virtue, Maxine Waters, will take his place. Sheesh! Will this be another case of out of the frying pan, into the fire? […]

  6. One piece of garbage down.  We need a serious cleaning in Washington. There is so much garbage that needs to be thrown out. Oh my, oh my where to start?  Eric Holder? Wasserman-Schultz? Nancy Pelosi? Barbara Boxer? and so many more….
