“Will no one rid us of this turbulent Christianist?” 🙂 By which I mean: Go, Rick!
December 1st, 2011 @ 9:34 am
The problem people have with Santorum is less about Santorum. People don’t like the truth, I’ve heard.
One truth….even if we got our finances in order, without fixing the morality, we’d soon be back in debt up to our eyeballs.
In order to fix our problems, we need to change who we are (and yes, a large part of that is creating a new or reformed GOP to get the scum out. Hard to sail your way out of a hurricane when your ‘leaders’ are busy scuttling the ship.) But…more is required of us.
December 1st, 2011 @ 10:51 am
His view of state’s rights is extremely troubling.
He has a view that the State’s should cede power to a higher morality imposed by the federal government or somebody…..I’m fairly certain he wouldn’t lead like that…but that is what turns people off of Santorum when they research him.
However, absent more nannyism, he is a guy I can support.
December 1st, 2011 @ 11:41 am
I mostly read his interview at the American Thinker, and unless you’re against States’ Rights, I don’t see how its troubling. He takes a strong stand FOR States’ Rights.
Higher morality…what has you all upset is when he suggests that allowing states to have gay marriage is a bad idea. And if that is what upsets people with Santorum, then we have a lot more problems than I realized.
There is a reason ‘marriage is between a man and a woman’ is not in the Constitution. Its because until thirty years ago, no one would have even thought otherwise.
You sound like being against Gay Marriage, and being willing to enforce it with Federal power is pretty close to a dealbreaker. Which is ludricrous.
December 1st, 2011 @ 12:09 pm
His statements have been that he supports state’s rights until it infringes upon (his view of) morality.
That is troubling.
I support Santorum, but as I research him, it is something I will look for…I don’t support financial or moral nannyism.
December 1st, 2011 @ 1:27 pm
I’d get on the Santorum wagon if I thought he had a chance… Until then, it’s O’Romney or Newt, which means a no-brainer to pick Newt.
December 1st, 2011 @ 1:57 pm
I’m pretty much a Free Speech Absolutist, until you get to ‘let’s plan to plant the bomb at X to go off at Y’ or ‘fire!’ in a theatre.
Doesn’t mean I’m not a Free Speecher.
Now myself, I do support moral nannyism. Thou shalt not murder, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not ….
Oh, you only mean the morality that you personally disagree with.
What I did in this post and the previous post is draw out what your true beliefs were, bring them out of the closet, you might say.
You believe Gay Marriage=Good. Fine. This is America, and I’ll fight to protect your right to that opinion, no matter how silly or wrong-headed or Extreme Left Wing it is.
And you’re free to vote on that basis, but I’m here to tell you, that’s not Conservative, and its not a majority position either in the general public, and it is especially not popular in the R party.
So just be open and say ‘I find Rick Santorum to be questionable because he does not take the Hard Left position of Gay Marriage NOW!’.
To which I would point out that he said he’s okay with civil unions. You have to be hard core to hate on Rick.
I’d vote for Perry even though he called me heartless. For Gingrich even though he sat on that sofa with Madam Pelosi. I’d vote for Cain despite the National Sales Tax.
I propose a Mulligan Rule for the Libertarians: Every politician gets at least one free pass on a stupid policy.
December 1st, 2011 @ 2:04 pm
I’ll vote for Santorum if we get a chance in Tennessee, and if it really is only R or N, then yeah, I’ll vote for Newt.
I understand RSM’s point about using vengeance as a tool of teaching, of having a reputation that one is not to be messed with lightly, but I suspect Newt got egg in his face about it already.
Essentially, I agree with the Manchester Union’s excerpt I read. Better to have a guy who is sometimes against us, but honest, than someone who tells us what we want to hear.
