Blame Bush: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Does!

Notice the not-too-subtle Washington Post spin here:

The 19-year-old suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has told interrogators that the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan motivated him and his brother to carry out the attack, according to U.S. officials familiar with the interviews.
From his hospital bed, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has acknowledged his role in planting the explosives near the marathon finish line on April 15, the officials said. . . .
Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police as the two attempted to avoid capture, do not appear to have been directed by a foreign terrorist organization.
Rather, the officials said, the evidence so far suggests they were “self-radicalized” through Internet sites and U.S. actions in the Muslim world. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has specifically cited the U.S. war in Iraq, which ended in December 2011 with the removal of the last American forces, and the war in Afghanistan, where President Obama plans to end combat operations by the end of 2014.
Obama has made repairing U.S. relations with the Islamic world a foreign policy priority, even as he has expanded drone operations in Pakistan and other countries, which has inflamed Muslim public opinion.

In other words, the Brothers Tsarnaev shared the Left’s worldview that U.S. military intervention abroad in the wake of 9/11 was illegitimate. And so “they were ‘self-radicalized’ through Internet sites” — maybe DailyKos, Think Progress, MoveOn.org, etc.?

  1. Smitty, Other, how serious would you take the word of a Stoner?

Howie Carr is having a contest to give the two monikers the older brother’s name is settled “Speedbump” But you can vote on the name for the younger brother Stoner or Flashbang. I voted for Flashbang.

  2. “In other words, the Brothers Tsarnaev shared the Left’s worldview that U.S. military intervention abroad in the wake of 9/11 was illegitimate.”

They will become heroes for the left. Matthews will probably get a tingle when he reads that.

  3. On the other hand one can’t help being impressed with Chris Mathews et al.’s abilitiy to disseminate their talking points to the appropriate spokespersons under any and all conditions.

  4. It’s not a left-right divide. Here at home, many liberals supported the invasion of Iraq, including both Clintons, Dianne Feinstein, and Joe Lieberman. Abroad, socialist Tony Blair supported it, as did leftist atheist Christopher Hitchens.

Many conservatives opposed those wars, including Pat Buchanan, Charley Reese, Sam Francis, and Thomas Fleming. Looking back, I’d say proponents of smaller government were right: Some of the direct results of the Neocon Wars include the Department of Homeland Security, the USA Patriot Act, surveillance drones, and indefinite detention.

Then there’s the expanded Muslim influence here at home directly attributable to the Iraq War. Some 62,000 Iraqis have settled in the US since the war. How many Dhzokhars are in that group? We’ll have to wait to find out.

  5. You do? I like Ginger far better. But Mary Ann is quite acceptable. It’s just the way I am.

  6. You obviously need a bit of schooling if you think he’s a neocon. Neocons are not conservatives, no matter how loudly they may protest to the contrary.

  7. Many of us old cold warriors got read out of the party by the likes of the moronic Frum (I do like Taki’s “Little Frummer Boy”). Most of us see Frum as something less than a fruit fly, and have about as much respect for him.

The true non-patriots are people like Frum, and the people for whom he is a useful idiot – Reid, Zer0, Pelosi, et.al.

  8. If that’s true that they were radicalized by Al Qeada online literature – it means they could of also read the part about Al Qeada propaganda, and what to do if they were caught. You know blame the enemy use their democratic system against them.

If any of this is true – that he’s blaming the U.S. for his terrorist acts, he’s a true believer, and I doubt seriously they were that committed with a one way relationship with online Al Qeada magazine and you tubes videos. Without any personal 1-1 with folks encouraging them to jihad like it’s 2001!

  9. @Smitty – I have no idea why et.al. is a link. I didn’t make it one, but it shows up on my system as a link for some reason.

  10. “Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police as the two attempted…”

Okay, I don’t know which abbadabbadoo-named guy was which, but the first brother who was apprehended was killed directly by the other one, who ran straight over him in a stolen SUV.

Newspapers: randomly-generated bullshit, with increasingly fewer ads, and pretty much zero revenue. Why are they still here?

  11. “I think the world has had enough of people who have no belief system, no policy for jobs, no policy for education, no policy for rule of law, but who just want to kill people because they don’t like what they see.”

Did John Kerry just say that Muslims have “no belief system” ?

  12. It’s because the rich text editor thingy Disqus uses assumes anything that looks like string.foo is a link, provided the “foo” part is the same as one of the top-level domains (like com, org, tv, uk, hi, al, etc.). Thus:

    string.org
    string.tv
    string.hi
    string.uk
    .
    .
    etc.
