Fear and Loathing, Et Cetera

Yes, I’m here in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada, home base for my coverage of the kickoff of the Tea Party Express III tour, among other things.

Fortuitously, I arrived on the birthday of Minority Report blogger Steve Foley, and his birthday was celebrated in appropriate fashion. IYKWIMAITYD. Even more fortuitously, when JSF of Valley of the Shadow blog heard I was coming to Vegas, he offered me this excellent advice: “Put it all on red.”

Dude. You’ve got no idea how well that advice paid off. But as for those other losers . . .

UPDATE 11:10 a.m. ET: My biological clock is screwed up. I’d left a wake-up call for 9 a.m. — i.e., noon ET — and snapped wide awake to see 7:43 on the clock. But was that a.m. or p.m.? All things considered, it was entirely possible that I’d slept 16 hours and missed an entire day’s work. But no, I’d slept only four hours and the question now was, should I get up and start working or go back to bed for another hour? But if I went back to sleep, I might oversleep for real this time. While I debated this, I checked the headlines at Memeorandum:

Obama Refuses to Dine With Jewish Leader

Binyamin Netanyahu humiliated after Barack Obama ‘dumped him for dinner’

Obama demands Netanyahu’s peace answers by Saturday

OK, I’m awake now. Armaggedon looms. Four hours sleep will have to do.

UPDATE 2:08 p.m. ET: Just so the tip-jar hitters know this trip isn’t all fun and games, I’m about to go do some actual shoe-leather reporting today.

Allow Valley Of The Shadow To Retort

by Smitty

We’ve heard enough Lefty sob stories, with occasional factual basis, to last a lifetime. VotS has a multi-part, personal series.

Peering into the future, my guess is that we will discover that socialized medicine is the ecological fallacy writ large. What do I mean? That humans ultimately remain individuals, and the one-size-fits-all approach, which may not be as bad in smaller populations, is likely to suck much pond water by the time DC is done wrecking it.

As I was trying to avoid discussing it in detail with colleagues, in the name of workplace peace, I said that it would be great if history supported experiments, and there was a way to let the nationalization of RomneyCare play out, without destroying the nation.

VotS promises to offer an interesting datum, alongside the other 3.14×10^7 data points, on why Americans must increase the political resistance against this awful idea.

Heady Complements Indeed

by Smitty

Valley of the Shadow puts this blog in company with Instapudit, Gateway Pundit, and Atlas Shrugs in “The Four Horsemen of the Ablogalypse: 2010 Version”.

It would be tedious to say anything other than “thank you”. However, it would be silly not to note that you need a micrometer to measure the distance between the competitors. I mean, AllahPundit doesn’t link us, and the Alyssa Milano reTweet keeps getting slapped back by the fail whale tail. So this blog will not get a big head, go unstable, and fall off the plague horse, which of course, is named Rocinante, (ok, you got me).

Speaking of four horsemen, American Glob has Mark Steyn enumerating “The Four Corpse-men of the Obama-clypse”. Red red red meat.

Why Did ‘Hope and Change’ Fail?

JSF of Valley of the Shadow explains how Barack Obama’s political experience left him unprepared to cope with conservative opposition:

When you study President Obama’s background, he never had to deal with Conservatives or Republicans. . . In Illinois, he never had any hard fought campaigns in his general election. And come 2008, it was going to be a Democratic party year so the only real opposition he had was from Hillary! . . .
President Obama has a Huffington Post understanding of the Right, or the Right as seen from the Left. Not once has he ever spoken to a Conservative to understand his or her views. I say President Obama should invite Rush Limbaugh to the White House for a week to learn about Republicans and Conservatives. . . .

Some Stranger in San Francisco Now Has Tucker Carlson’s Cell-Phone Number

Also, the personal numbers of Tom Wolfe, Bob Barr and Hunter S. Thompson’s widow, Anita, which were in the phone I accidentally left in the SF international airport Saturday during a long layover en route home from California. So if any of my good friends receive harassing phone calls in the next few days, please contact the FBI. Speaking of my good friends:

Finally, one of the several sofas I crashed during the California trip was at the Burbank home of Valley of the Shadow who compares me to the Bill Murray version of Hunter S. Thompson in Where The Buffalo Roam:

Mock him at your peril. Driving from Costa Mesa to Griffith Park by way of the Sepulveda pass, I saw Smitty and RS write a post on the road. . . .

Actually, JSF didn’t see Smitty, except perhaps in one of those weird hallucinatory dreams. (Most of my dreams like that involve Natalie Portman, and/or Christina Hendricks, but if  JSF’s dreaming about Smitty . . . well, NTTAWWT.) What JSF actually saw was me dictating a blog post about the Crimson Tide’s homeward departure, after a technical glitch trashed most of what I’d written at a Starbucks in Costa Mesa.

JSF is a wonderful guy who, like 95 percent of America, drives too damned slow. This didn’t bother me much except Friday afternoon when we were trying to get down to Costa Mesa and then back up to Griffith Park before sundown. Being born with the hillbilly NASCAR gene, my natural tendency is to drive like Bo Duke with Enos and Boss Hogg in hot pursuit.

Chris Cassone had invited me for dinner at his girlfriend’s home in the Hollywood hills, and the thought of being trapped in L.A.’s notorious rush-hour gridlock was heavy on my mind as the clock ticked close to 4 p.m. in Costa Mesa and I finally abandoned any hope of finishing that blog post at Starbucks. As we left Orange County, I expected JSF to be driving the way I’d be driving under those circumstances — namely, with a desperate and reckless haste. Not to perpetuate any stereotypes, but the neutral objective facts are that (a) JSF is originally from Manhattan, and (b) no Manhattan native has ever won at Talladega.

Despite his genetic deficiencies in automotive prowess, JSF managed to improvise a relatively gridlock-free route via the 410 and various surface streets so that we crossed pass on Sepulvada Boulevard and thus made it from Costa Mesa to Griffith Park in less than three hours. Not bad for a non-hillbilly, so you should visit Valley of the Shadow blog and remember JSF in your prayers.

As for me, I’m doing OK in the prayer department — Mrs. Other McCain prays enough for both of us — and mainly need you to hit the tip jar so I can get up to Massachusetts this week.
