Bill Schmalfeldt’s Very Bad Idea

Bill Schmalfeldt never gets any good ideas, so it takes a particularly bad idea for me even to bother noticing. Remember, Schmalfeldt is the guy who got banned from Daily Kos for his grossly offensive writings about anal sex. Schmalfeldt is habitually dishonest, and one of his most heinous lies involved a vicious attack on Andrew Breitbart’s memory:

In July, Schmalfeldt created a Web site called “Big Damnation” which he promoted with a Twitter account called @DeadAndrew that mocked Breitbart as supposedly repenting his conservative “sins” (and denouncing his former colleagues) while suffering in Hell.
Bill Schmalfeldt is a remorseless liar and, after this vile project was exposed, Schmalfeldt deceptively used his phony “Bill Matthews” alias at the Examiner to promote his dishonest (anti-Breitbart) version of this controversy. In doing so, Schmalfeldt (a) defended Brett Kimberlin and (b) pretended that he wasn’t responsible for the “Big Damnation”/@DeadAndrew atrocity, as Lee Stranahan has explained.

As I said, Schmalfeldt never gets any good ideas, but this latest one is particularly bad: “Team Kimberlin” T-shirts!

For obvious reasons, no decent human being would link any site run by Bill Schmalfeldt, and I can’t help but wonder: How much do would-be members of “Team Kimberlin” know about the man with whom they would be associating themselves by buying those T-shirts?

Brett Kimberlin, the “Speedway Bomber” — what do they know about him? Do they know about Vietnam veteran Carl DeLong, whose leg got blown off by one of Kimberlin’s bombs? And do those “Team Kimberlin” members know about the little girl whose grandmother got shot to death in what investigators believed was a murder-for-hire plot?

“For three consecutive summers, 1974 through 1976, they took vacations of a week or longer in Disney World, Mexico, and Hawaii. Sandi couldn’t get time off from work, so on these summer trips it was just the two of them — Brett and Jessica.
“Eyebrows levitated. A drug-dealing colleague had memories of conversations with Kimberlin that struck him as odd: ‘We’d see a girl, who was pubescent or prepubescent, and Brett would get this smile and say, “Hey, what do you think? Isn’t she great?” It made me very uncomfortable.’ Another recalled Kimberlin introducing Jessica as ‘my girlfriend,’ and if irony was intended, it was too subtle to register. To a coworker . . . Sandi confided that Kimberlin was ‘grooming Jessica to be his wife.’ To another, Sandi explained that although Kimberlin’s relationship with Jessica was chaste, he intended ‘to wait for her and would marry her.’”

There’s just so much to learn about Brett Kimberlin:

As thoroughly despicable as Brett Kimberlin is, it takes an especially depraved character to admire Brett Kimberlin.

And few characters are more depraved than Bill Schmalfeldt.

UPDATE: Schmalfeldt would be easier to hate, if he weren’t so hopelessly stupid that you almost feel sorry for him:

UPDATE III: Further scrutiny of the photo in which Schmalfeldt appears to brandish an AR-15 reveals that the gun is, in fact, a toy.

UPDATE IV: OK, so Schmalfeldt’s been all up in my timeline on Twitter this morning, accusing me of “libel” and insisting that indeed he was brandishing a genuine AR-15 rifle in that photo he posted to the Internet. Therefore, I apologize for my mistake in correcting what I previously thought was a mistake, and hereby correct the record by stating that Bill Schmalfeldt is in possession of a semi-automatic weapon with a high-capacity magazine and, probably, lots of ammunition.

Also, he’s crazy as hell. But there’s never been any doubt about that.

Brett Kimberlin could have been sentenced to 230 years in federal prison

WASHINGTON, D.C.
The piped-in music in this taco shop seems to be set to ’80s punk-pop — currently “Rock This Town” by the Stray Cats — which isn’t an ideal working environment. Of course, I’ve filed from enough bars, McDonald’s and airport terminals that it wouldn’t bother me, except that I spent the past week running around CPAC and I’m ready to be back home.

We scrambled out of National Harbor this morning to get to a 14th Street coffee shop where Ali Akbar and Bill Murphy did their weekly #PoliChat seminar at noon, then Ali had some National Bloggers Club business nearby and, by the time we were ready to hit the road, I figured we’d get trapped in rush-hour traffic. So, executive decision: Grab some cheap Mexican food and get on the free WiFi while we wait for the gridlock to clear. D.C. drivers are horrible on a clear-blue sunshine day, and are utterly hopeless in the rain.

All of this is by way of explaining my relatively modest blog output the past several days. During CPAC, I was getting acquainted with the ViralRead operation while running around to a series of scheduled events and business meetings. After five years of independent freelancing, it’s an adjustment to return to the world in which business meetings are an unavoidable fact of life. Anyway . . .

We were partying away Thursday at Blog Bash when it was learned that there was a photographer outside the nightclub — evidently on assignment for The Unlinkable Site (Now Run by Bill Schmalfeldt) That Coincidentally Smears Enemies of Brett Kimberlin.

Yeah.

It might be libelous to state as a fact that this photographer was being paid by Brett Kimberlin, but it’s hard to imagine why anyone else would have hired a nutjob for such an assignment.

Several of us went outside to talk to the guy, who didn’t seem to recognize any of us. You’d imagine that being face-to-face with Mandy Nagy, Lee Stranahan and other of Kimberlin’s enemies would have gotten a reaction from a volunteer/activist — someone who actually knew whom he was supposed to be stalking — but this guys eemed utterly oblivious. Jeff Dunetz tells the story:

At about 9pm my daughter . . . ran up to me exclaiming “Daddy there is someone outside taking pictures through the window.” . . .
As I went outside to confront the cameraman he ran across the street. As I followed he put his camera up to take pictures of me. Eventually he put down his camera and got nose to nose. . . .
With our faces almost touching he said, “You can’t intimidate me.” I replied “You can’t kiss me.”
Eventually he admitted who sent him to BlogBash — Brett Kimberlin, the Speedway Bomber.  Apparently the man who had tried to  intimidate the party venue from hosting the event, who [allegedly] had been tweeting nasty slanders against myself and other members of the BlogBash committee for the better part of two weeks … hired a photographer to take pictures of the party … didn’t have the guts to take his own pictures.
So goes it [with] all bullies. Show weakness and they will continue to attack — stand up to them as many of us have been doing with blog posts and other writing —they back off.

You can see the photos at The Lid, and you might also want to see Jeff’s post about the pubescent Indiana girl whose grandmother got shot dead, kind of coincidentally about the time grandma was having a problem with Brett Kimberlin. These coincidences just accumulate, see, and I’m reminded of James Carville’s famous saying that when you see a turtle on top of a fence post, you know it didn’t climb up there by itself.

Being a full-time news industry executive now, I can’t engage in conjecture, insinuation or unsubstantiated speculation. On the other hand, it is just Neutral Objective Journalism to report that I’ve had conversations with writers advising them that, while the phrase “suspected pedophile” is potentially libelous, “convicted bomber” is a statement of documented fact.

You can read Citizen K (sample quote: “Jessica was ten years old and Kimberlin was twenty”) and decide for yourself.

Since 2005, Brett Kimberlin’s tax-exempt 501(c) groups have raised more than $2 million, but what can he buy with that money?

Respect? Admiration? Gratitude? From whom?

No decent, intelligent person could ever have a good opinion of Brett Kimberlin, nor would any honest person consent to take a dime of his money. And therefore Kimberlin seems to have assembled a thug-mob of the indecent, the stupid and the dishonest to wage a war against those who tell the truth about Brett Kimberlin. Which brings us to this description of the photo-troll’s antics:

 The Kimberlin folks will call this “journalism.” Watch it and decide for yourself. The photographer screams at passersby: “Warning! Right-wing CPAC maggots! Woot Woot!” He talks about how he is going to “freak out” the people inside and runs up to the window to take a picture. He screams about his “freedom and liberty!!!” to take pictures on the sidewalk, and cackles. He shouts at Ted Cruz when he comes out of the venue, asking him what Jesus would cut from the budget. And so forth.

A few hours from now, I hope to be home with my wife and children — returning as the Conquering Hero — and there was a text-message I sent to a few friends last night: “Whom God would destroy, no man can save. Whom God would save, no man can destroy. Praise God.”

It’s a long drive home. Never doubt that God answers prayer, and I’m profoundly grateful for your continuing prayers.

Aaron Walker tells the story of his most recent encounter with the “Speedway Bomber.” It’s like Wile E. Coyote and Acme rocket skates: You might think he’d learn a lesson, but somehow he never does:

Brett Kimberlin – who spent 17 years in federal prison after being convicted as Indiana’s infamous “Speedway Bomber” – showed up at a Maryland court house and began photographing Walker’s wife.
While Walker was attending a March 1 hearing and his wife was in their car in the parking lot outside, Kimberlin “circled the vehicle, looking into its interior and at my wife,” Walker wrote at his “Allergic to Bull” blog. Walker said Kimberlin “drove around and then parked in the space directly facing my wife … and started taking pictures or filming her.”

“Streisand Effect” — you can look it up. Attempts to suppress the truth tend to have the opposite effect in the New Media age.

What is the truth that Brett Kimberlin so desperately wants to suppress? Just read this: “When Jessica Was 10, 11, 12 . . .”

When the pro-Kimberlin trolls get up in my face on Twitter, I just start Tweeting out that link, and pretty soon, they get out of my face. Why? Because calling attention to someone who tells the truth about Kimberlin sort of defeats the purpose of the Kimberlin fanboy trolls.

And so, truth! truth! truth! What happened to Julia Scyphers?

Blog Bash is Thursday night. The place will be packed to fire-code capacity, and Aaron Walker will be there, along with hundreds of bloggers who all have a motive to tell the truth about Brett Kimberlin.

Let me ask you something: Wouldn’t you like to see video of that event — hundreds of bloggers cheering — when Aaron Walker receives a check to help with his legal expenses? Give what you can — $10, $20, $50 — and make sure the truth about Brett Kimberlin gets told.

This news comes on the heels of reports that Kimberlin and his associate Neal Rauhauser have made calls to the establishment hosting the BlogBash party, which Aaron plans to attend, threatening the establishment with protests by Muslims due to Aaron’s involvement with the “Everyone Draw Mohammed” web site, which Aaron and others created to stand up to Islamic extremists who would kill those who dared to depict Mohammed.

C’mon: $10, $20, $50 for the truth.

 

Brett Kimberlin Calls Blog Bash Venue, Vows to ‘Put You Guys Out of Business’

Wednesday, Brett Kimberlin associate Neal Rauhauser contacted the venue where the National Bloggers Club is hosting the fourth annual Blog Bash. Now I can report that Thursday morning, Kimberlin himself contacted the venue and, according to sources, was “raving like a lunatic” on the phone and angrily told the venue manager that he would “put you guys out of business” for hosting Blog Bash.

What is interesting is how closely these reported contacts by Rauhauser and Kimberlin echoed comments posted on a pro-Kimberlin blog by someone using the alias “Texas Tim.”  Here are screen caps of two comments, which you may click to enlarge:


To save you eye-strain, I’ll tell you that Wednesday night, “Texas Tim” criticized “these dumbass blog awards lionizing and nominating the worst scum of the earth,” falsely claiming that Blog Bash was “not welcome at CPAC,” and making this interesting claim to advance knowledge:

“[W]e know that the new venue for BlogBash will be contacted by major Muslim organizations to cancel the BlogBash event because Ali and BlogBash supported Aaron Walker, the publisher of the Everyone Draw Mohammed blog.”

Question: How does “Texas Tim” know what “major Muslim organizations” will be doing?

While you ponder that assertion of prescient knowledge, look at what “Texas Tim” wrote on Thursday morning:

“So here are a few suggestions: call [the venue] and tell them about Ali and about who BlogBash has nominated for awards. . . .
“Call Muslim organizations and urge them to weigh in by calling [the venue] and joining the protest at annd boycott of [the venue]. . . .
“Let’s put [the venue] of business for hosting anti-American Islamophobes, felons, pimps and pornographers. . . . [The venue’s] assault on women and Islam will not be tolerated.”

Well, this is fascinating, isn’t it? On the same two days that the BlogBash venue is contacted by Rauhauser and Kimberlin, “Texas Tim” first predicts Muslim groups will contact the venue, and then urges readers to encourage such groups to contact the venue. And the threat to put a certain nightclub “out of business” is the exact same language used by Brett Kimberlin in his phone call to the venue manager.

Now, Lee Stranahan has been keeping an eye on “Texas Tim” for a while and Lee says it’s Brett Kimberlin. However, the source who tipped me to these comments says “Texas Tim” is “definitely” Neal Rauhauser. I trust my source, but Lee may be right. Either way, the larger point is that this harassment of Blog Bash is not coincidental.

Report: Team Kimberlin Harassment Now Targeting ‘Blog Bash’ Event at CPAC

‘Speedway Bomber’: Criminal terrorist Brett Kimberlin was convicted in 1981

Guests and sponsors of the fourth annual “Blog Bash” have been harassed by associates of convicted bomber Brett Kimberlin, the event’s organizer said Thursday.

Kimberlin associate Neal Rauhauser reportedly contacted the party’s venue Wednesday attempting “to gather information about Blog Bash, knowing that all of us will be in one room for the first time ever,” National Bloggers Club president Ali Akbar said in a report.

The caller “tried scaring” the venue’s staff, said Akbar: “This is harassment and nothing short of a threat.”

Since its inception in 2010, Blog Bash has grown to become the biggest private party at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). At last year’s event, New Media entrepreneur Andrew Breitbart was recognized with the “Changing the Narrative” Award, the only journalism award he received during his lifetime. This year, the National Bloggers Club has renamed the award in honor of Breitbart, who died less than a month after being honored at Blog Bash.

The targeting of Blog Bash by Kimberlin is hardly coincidental. Andrew Breitbart himself warned before his death that “convicted domestic terrorist” Kimberlin and Kimberlin’s associates “need exposure.”

Kimberlin’s tax-exempt organization Velvet Revolution had called for criminal prosecution of James O’Keefe III and Hannah Giles for their 2009 video exposé of the left-wing group ACORN, which catapulted Bretibart’s online news operation into national headlines.

In October 2010, Breitbart published an account by Mandy Nagy (“Liberty Chick”) documenting Kimberlin’s criminal history as Indiana’s “Speedway Bomber.” In 1981, Kimberlin was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for his crimes, but was released after serving only 17 years. By 2005, Kimberlin had formed two non-profit “progressive” groups that between them have since collected more than $2 million in donations, including substantial grants from foundations associated with George Soros, Barbra Streisand and the family of Theresa Heinz Kerry, wife of U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry.

Neal Rauhauser, a former Democrat political consultant, apparently joined forces with Kimberlin’s organizations in mid-2011, after Breitbart helped expose the sex scandal surrounding Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.). Rauhauser had become obsessed with the conspiracy theory that Weiner was the victim of a hacking hoax. In fall 2011, Rauhauser represented himself as an agent of Kimberlin’s Velvet Revolution group in communications with organizers of the “Occupy” anti-banking protests. Rauhauser and Kimberlin have accompanied each other to court appearances, and Rauhauser’s specialty as an online troublemaker has been a major part of the controversy that resulted in “Everybody Blog About Brett Kimberlin Day” last May.

The National Bloggers Club’s defense of bloggers targeted by Kimberlin and Rauhauser has now apparently made the Club’s annual Blog Bash a new target:

My Blog Bash staff and I have been monitoring their online chatter for weeks now. They’ve harassed our sponsors, tried hacking into our personal Twitter and Facebook accounts, and now they’re trying to stop the National Bloggers Club from hosting our annual gathering of bloggers, Blog Bash.

I think this is a huge mistake on their part, if you try to go after the odd blogger here and there online it’s pretty easy to convince a judge that it’s just some internet squabble.
However when you are harassing the organizers and venue of an event that draws significant guests from the political world and said event is held at a DC venue with some gravitas that’s a different story.

Bill Schmalfeldt Praises Kimberlin for ‘Social Justice,’ Then Deletes Tweet

Today there was a peace order hearing in Maryland in the matter of Bill Schmalfeldt v. John Hoge, which Aaron Walker describes briefly, with the interesting news that Brett Kimberlin showed up for the hearing.

Schmalfeldt gushed on Twitter that the “high point” of his day was meeting Kimberlin: “I don’t care what he did in the past. He is redeeming himself every day by trying to bring social justice to the world.” Schmalfeldt deleted that Tweet, but Lee Stranahan has the screen-caps.

Schmalfeldt’s concept of political redemption is, of course, the same hustle that Kimberlin has been selling for years. Kimberlin has been called a “world-class liar” and a “top-flight con man” and over the years he has managed to dupe many people smarter than Bill Schmalfeldt.

As for what Kimberlin “did in the past,” read “When ‘Jessica’ Was 10, 11, 12” and see if you think Kimberlin, who served 17 years of a 50-year-federal sentence, can ever bring enough “social justice” to make anyone forget his career as the “Speedway Bomber,” a crime spree for which Kimberlin has never even admitted his guilt, much less apologized.

Admitting his guilt for the bombings of which he was convicted, you see, might require Kimberlin to address his motives for those crimes and . . . well, maybe you ought to read that article to understand the problem there.

The profound irony of Bill Schmalfeldt being indifferent to Brett Kimberlin’s crimes, of course, is that Schmalfeldt has harassed Lee Stranahan (and Stranahan’s defenders) in part on the basis of Stranahan having once shot some “erotic photography,” which Schmalfeldt tries to depict as evidence of moral turpitude and even criminality.

All of Brett Kimberlin’s enemies are very bad people, Bill Schmalfeldt would have you believe, whereas Kimberlin is a saintly instrument of “social justice.”

UPDATE: To show Schmalfeldt’s bully-boy modus operandi, check out this account by his erstwhile Public Enemy Number One, defenders of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. In order to get the “information” he wanted, Schmalfeldt contacted a woman and, in quite vulgar terms, warned of the evil that would befall her if she didn’t “start telling the truth and telling it real quick.” Consider the consequences Schmalfeldt threatened:

“Now, do you wanna play dumb and lose your kids? Or do you wanna play smart and keep what you got?”

A real sweetheart, that Bill. And if he thinks it is protected First Amendment speech — much less journalism — to send people messages like that, he will probably have another think coming, sooner or later.

Having begun the day with a post about deranged cyberstalker Bill Schmalfeldt, followed up with a post about a maniac professor at Columbia University, and then added a discussion of the (allegedly) felonious kook Barrett Brown, let’s stick with the theme, eh?

In a post at Breitbart.com’s new group-blog thingie, Mandy Nagy asks “Is Social Media Breeding Monsters?” and offers this sampling of evidence in support of the answer, “Oh, hell, yes”:

Kind of an obvious pattern there. Ace of Spades comments:

The downside of the internet’s egalitarianism is that people who have no social peers in their own lives — because, most likely, they are insane or too repulsive in character to attract real-life friends — flock to the internet. They’ve alienated everyone they’ve ever known in real-life; now it’s time to try out their off-putting schtick on the millions of new potential victims at their fingertips.

Exactly so. And it’s also a fact the Internet facilitates deceit, impersonation and fantasy role-playing, all of which involve blurring the line between perception and reality. As a famous Steiner cartoon pointed out, “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog,” and people with an appetite for fraud or make-believe therefore find the Internet irresistible. Not all of these people are criminals or nutjobs, but there are enough of the insane/dangerous types to create a critical mass whenever they find some cause for common action and — no matter how narrow their fringe appetites — it’s possible in an international communication matrix with hundreds of millions of users for a few dozen of them to cluster together and bask in the warm support of their fellow crackpots.

For example, feminists: Tracy Clark-Flory writes about the “labia pride movement,” as if this were something significant.

If there is a critical mass for that kind of delusion, then you see why Bill Schmalfeldt may believe there must be an eager audience for his bizarre fixation, as Lee Stranahan reports:

Bill Schmalfeldt shows no signs whatsoever of stopping public discussion of his sexual obsession with me and my family. He’s been writing about my wife Lauren for months, in insulting and prurient terms that have including fantasizing about having her perform sexuals acts on him and then do menial labor before discussing the death of our daughter Collette
Somehow today, he’s gotten even worse.
On today’s podcast, Bill Schmalfeldt had not one but two new ‘comedy’ pieces, both of which make explicit sexual references to my minor daughter in deranged fake commercials that are about me selling her.
Remember: Bill Schmalfeldt has said repeatedly that he is a serious journalist following a story as any professional would.

Meanwhile, as Stranahan further notes, Bill Schmalfeldt had Neal Rauhauser as a special call-in guest on his two-hour podcast.

Yes, I said, two-hour podcast.

Five days a week, Schmalfeldt rants for two hours about his selected list of enemies which — curious coincidence — exactly matches the Kimberlin-Rauhauser enemies list.

For example (and here we close the circle, as it were), the title of Schmalfeldt’s Feb. 12 podcast was, “It’s Mandy Nagy Day!” Reasonable people may ask, Why would Bill Schmalfeldt single out Mandy Nagy for an entire day of abusive podcasting?

A reasonable answer might be that Mandy Nagy wrote an October 2010 article entitled, “Flashback: Progressives Embrace Convicted Terrorist,” about “Speedway Bomber” Brett Kimberlin. In other words, it is a fair assumption that Schmalfeldt’s entire extravagant oeuvre of harassment — dating back to June, when he began cyberstalking Aaron Walker — was undertaken to defend Kimberlin.

Brett Kimberlin, who reportedly became obsessed with a pre-teen Indiana girl whose grandmother’s murder is still an open case.

Coincidence, probably.

Did I mention that Brett Kimberlin threatened to sue Mandy Nagy? Did I mention that Brett Kimberlin also threatened to sue Patrick “Patterico” Frey, who had also written about Kimberlin’s criminal career? Did I mention that Bill Schmalfeldt also occasionally lashes out at Patterico on his podcast which seemingly serves no other purpose than to attack Brett Kimberlin’s enemies?

Some of these random coincidences crossed my mind today after I received an e-mail from Schmalfeldt with the subject line, “DENOUNCE THIS, OR OWN IT!” The e-mail included a screen-cap of a death threat to Schmalfeldt from a Twitter account. But when I checked the Twitter account — which I  suspected of being bogus — the account had been suspended. So I replied to Schmalfeldt’s e-mail:

STOP CONTACTING ME. FURTHER CONTACT WILL BE CONSIDERED AS EVIDENCE OF HARASSMENT.

By the time I got back on Twitter, Schmalfeldt was already sending me unsolicited messages and trumpeting to various others my reply to his e-mail as proof that I endorse death threats. But there was no way for me to verify that the Twitter account which sent the threat is anything but another of Neal Rauhauser’s notorious collection of sockpuppets.

This morning, I remarked on “Schmalfeldt’s lack of self-awareness, his failure to understand the transparency of his own motives” — he seems to think he is cleverly deceiving people when, in fact, no intelligent person could be deceived by him. In the vastness of the Internet, there may be a sufficient audience of stupid people to justify Schmalfeldt’s daily podcasts, but what are the chances that all these stupid people are also obsessed with Brett Kimberlin’s enemies? Not very good, really.

So many crazy people, so little time.

Connecting the Dots, Telling the Story

Remember that on Thursday, May 17, my plan had been to cover the G8 Summit at Camp David, until I saw Aaron Walker’s 28,000-word epic, “How Brett Kimberlin Tried to Frame Me for a Crime” and immediately recognized his story as newsworthy.

Four days later, on Monday, May 21, Kimberlin contacted my wife’s employer and accused me of “harassing” him, inspiring my departure to an undisclosed location so that I could continue to cover the story without endangering my family or others. And by June 4, I’d finally put together enough of the story to explain in detail how the tax-exempt “progressive” empire of Brett Kimberlin was connected to the WeinerGate obsessions of Neal Rauhauser:

Both Rauhauser and Kimberlin were enemies of Breitbart for different reasons and in mid-2011 — in the wake of Weiner’s resignation — they joined forces, an alliance that eventually made Aaron Walker a target of convenience, collateral damage in a much larger campaign against their enemies, especially including Andrew Breitbart.

A lot of people became targets in that campaign, including Seth Allen, Mike Stack, Patrick “Patterico” Frey, Mandy Nagy, Ace of Spades, James O’Keefe, Lee Stranahan, Brandon Darby, Ali Akbar and myself, to name a few. And what Ace wrote in May is still true:

“It is very easy to decide ‘this isn’t any of my trouble’ and permit vicious behavior. . . . Who wants to get involved? Easier, and surely safer, just to duck one’s head and hide, and hope the danger visits someone else.”

A fearful, defensive posture toward danger will not save you, and the “duck and hide” response only permits the danger to envelop others.
