ObamaCare: Fake It and Take it

“Healthcare reform” as a massive fraud on taxpayers:

Undercover government investigators were able to obtain thousands of dollars in taxpayer subsidies under ObamaCare using fake identities, according to findings presented to Congress on Wednesday.
The probe by the Government Accountability Office has raised fresh concerns about the ability of the sprawling health care program to prevent or intercept costly fraud schemes. In the case of the GAO investigation, 11 out of 12 applications submitted using “fictitious identities” were accepted, resulting in subsidized health coverage.
“For each of our 11 approved applications, we paid the required premiums to put policies into force, and are continuing to pay the premiums. For the 11 applications that were approved for coverage, we obtained the advance premium tax credit in all cases,” the report said.
According to the GAO, the total amount for these credits was $2,500 monthly, adding up to $30,000 a year.

Feminist Prostitution in Canada?

Olga Marques, Ph.D. (@omarques_) is an assistant professor at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, where her research interests include “Qualitative and feminist research methods” as well as “Sexuality, sexual deviance and sexual labour.” Her Ph.D. dissertation was on “Women’s Engagement with Sexually Explicit Materials: Deviance, Stigma and Negotiating Identities”; her master’s thesis was on “Governing Female Sexuality: Prostitution, Problematic Associations and the Subcommittee on Solicitation Laws.” She once worked on a research project, “Sex Work and Intimacy: Escorts and their Clients,” funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

To put it as bluntly as possible, Professor Marques is a leading expert on Canadian whores, and her feminism seems to be of the variety which views prostitution and pornography as potentially “empowering” to women: Vagina for rent = Equality!

It’s possible I never would have heard of Professor Olga Marques, were it not for her decision Tuesday night to use her Twitter account to troll the #WomenAgainstFeminism hashtag:

See? If you don’t agree with Professor Marques, you’re ignorant. Her claim that women had no rights — and lacked even “inclusion as people” — prior to the rise of the modern feminist movement in the late 1960s, is a myth that has been exposed by, among others, Carolyn Graglia in Domestic Tranquility: A Brief Against Feminism. Yet, even if you believe that the Women’s Liberation movement of the 1960s and ’70s (what is now called “Second Wave” feminism) was necessary to bring about beneficial reforms, it does not logically follow from such a belief that today’s feminist movement is likewise necessary, nor must you believe the “reforms” advocated by today’s feminists would be similarly beneficial to women. (My traditionalist perspective is the same as Graglia’s, and I would also encourage those who are skeptical of feminist myth-making to read Barbara Dafoe Whitehead’s The Divorce Culture: Rethinking Our Commitments to Marriage and Family.)

Never mind any arguments made by feminism’s critics, however. Professor Olga Marques is your intellectual superior. She believes that only ignorant women can be against feminism, and that all women would be feminists if they were “knowledgeable citizens.”

Ditch Mitch?

Who was ultimately responsible for the evil Mississippi primary campaign that smeared supporters of Chris McDaniel as racists?

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, that’s who.

The GOP Establishment Incumbent Protection Machine and the big-money donors who fund it have been determined to eradicate the Tea Party movement in the 2014 campaign cycle.

This is McConnell’s formula for Republican success: Destroy all primary challengers, whatever the cost, and ensure that only Establishment-approved candidates win primaries in open-seat races or against vulnerable Democrat incumbents. It’s a cautious, risk-averse strategy, and if Republicans capture the Senate majority in November, McConnell will be congratulated on his success.

On the other hand . . .

What if it all goes sideways? What if this political equivalent of the NFL “prevent defense” turns out to be a formula for GOP failure?

What if all the big money and all the shrewd consultants turn out to be less valuable to Republicans than the grassroots conservative supporters who have been alienated by McConnell’s strategy?

What if Mitch McConnell loses his own Senate seat?

Manu Raju and John Bresnahan of Politico examine that scenario at some length today, and it’s not as far-fetched as it may seem.

Look at the polls: McConnell leads Democrat challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes by 5 points in the Real Clear Politics average, but the race has only been polled four times in the past two months, so we don’t know how solid that lead really is. Most importantly, McConnell is consistently polling below 50% — as low as 42% in a May poll — and that’s always a troubling sign for an incumbent.

As the Politico article says, if McConnell can’t defeat Grimes, the prospects for a GOP Senate majority are pretty remote. And if Republicans can’t take over the Senate this year — when they have every possible advantage, by ordinary calculations — it’s possible to argue that Republicans can never win a Senate majority, that the GOP is doomed to permanent minority status.

This scenario, the de facto triumph of Democrats as uncontested rulers of America as a one-party centralized state, would be a complete reversal of the “permanent Republican majority” Karl Rove promised in the wake of George W. Bush’s re-election.

After all the evil deeds perpetrated by the Republican establishment in the Mississippi primary, some of my conservative friends respond to this possibility with calm: “Let it burn,” they say.

It’s becoming harder to argue that these friends of mine are wrong.

Trannies Keep Harassing Feminists

Sophia Banks (@sophiaphotos) is a Canadian transsexual who decided to “expose” some radical feminists who stubbornly cling to the notion that being a woman is a condition involving XX chromosomes.

Yes, apparently, it’s come to this: Science is now HATE.

I’ve been covering this conflict intermittently for six months now (e.g., the situation that caused radical lesbians to protest against last month’s London Dyke March) and, despite my profound disagreement with radical feminism, there is no doubt at all that it is the feminists who are the ones being targeted for hateful (but politically correct) harassment by the “transgender community.”

Cathy Brennan writes: “Also, can I just point out that comparing women who know that trans-women are male to Hitler is a very offensive analogy?” Brennan calls these freaks “Men’s Rights Activists who identify as women,” which is grossly unfair to MRAs. I wish Brennan and her radical feminist allies could be strategic enough to realize that there is a huge majority of people who would be willing to support them on this one point — that “woman” is a biological category, not a “gender identity” — if only they realized how important this issue is. The fact that the people being targeted now are my ideological antagonists is not irrelevant to my concern. If hardcore feminists can be targeted this way, what do you think is going to happen when the Tranny Totalitarians target conservatives?

People need to wake the hell up.

Schools of Privilege

My hostility to elite institutions of higher education is not entirely a matter of vulgar populism. It is also based on knowledge of what sort of childhood and adolescence is necessary to compete in the admissions sweepstakes at elite private schools.

It’s not just about being “smart.” Unless your Daddy’s a millionaire alumnus, mere intelligence doesn’t matter much in terms of getting admitted to Harvard, Yale, Princeton and other such schools which annually receive many applications from kids with perfect SAT scores (before the test was changed in 2005, more than 900 students each year were “dialing toll-free,” as it’s called, referring to a perfect 800 score on each section of the SAT). No, to get into an elite school, a high SAT score is just the beginning; you’ll also need a near-perfect high-school grade-point average (GPA) and a thick stack of extracurricular activities and awards — captain of the tennis team, student-body president, first prize in the state science fair, etc.

Basically, in order to get into an elite school — unless your family is rich and your Daddy’s a senator, like Columbia alumna Megan McCain — you’re going to have to devote the first 16 or 17 years of your life to compiling the kind of credentials necessary to gain admission. You’re going to have to be a grind, an apple-polishing teacher’s pet, and your life outside the classroom is going to be so crammed full of activities (violin lessons, dance classes, and so forth) that you will have no time for anything resembling a normal childhood. And then what? Well, your folks are going to have to shell out $50,000+ a year for tuition, room and board, so that you can have the privilege of spending four years being indoctrinated by Marxists, atheists and sexual perverts, while acquiring the snobbish certainty that you are morally and intellectually superior to everyone who didn’t graduate from an elite school.

Why anyone would want that for their children, I don’t know. And neither does former Yale instructor William Deresiewicz:

“Super People,” the writer James Atlas has called them—the stereotypical ultra-high-achieving elite college students of today. A double major, a sport, a musical instrument, a couple of foreign languages, service work in distant corners of the globe, a few hobbies thrown in for good measure: They have mastered them all, and with a serene self-assurance that leaves adults and peers alike in awe. A friend who teaches at a top university once asked her class to memorize 30 lines of the eighteenth-century poet Alexander Pope. Nearly every single kid got every single line correct. It was a thing of wonder, she said, like watching thoroughbreds circle a track.
These enviable youngsters appear to be the winners in the race we have made of childhood. But the reality is very different, as I have witnessed in many of my own students and heard from the hundreds of young people whom I have spoken with on campuses or who have written to me over the last few years. Our system of elite education manufactures young people who are smart and talented and driven, yes, but also anxious, timid, and lost, with little intellectual curiosity and a stunted sense of purpose: trapped in a bubble of privilege, heading meekly in the same direction, great at what they’re doing but with no idea why they’re doing it.
When I speak of elite education, I mean prestigious institutions like Harvard or Stanford or Williams as well as the larger universe of second-tier selective schools, but I also mean everything that leads up to and away from them—the private and affluent public high schools; the ever-growing industry of tutors and consultants and test-prep courses; the admissions process itself, squatting like a dragon at the entrance to adulthood; the brand-name graduate schools and employment opportunities that come after the B.A.; and the parents and communities, largely upper-middle class, who push their children into the maw of this machine. In short, our entire system of elite education. . . .

You can read the whole thing at the New Republic. Deresiewicz’s critique of the elite schools is essentially liberal, whereas my viewpoint is conservative. I have no problem with rich people sending their overprivileged kids to elite schools. My problem is with middle-class parents who think they’re doing their kids a favor by spending money they can’t afford to send their kids to schools that teach them to emulate the fashionable attitudes of the decadent rich.

Ted Kaczynski was a Harvard graduate, you know.

UPDATE: The blogger at Booman Tribune is a wretched leftist scumbag whom I would normally never link. However (a) he is a longtime resident of Princeton, N.J., who has had the opportunity to observe young Ivy Leaguers at close range, and (b) he basically agrees with me about this:

Most of them are well-rounded, but I don’t think we should expect most of them to be well-adjusted. Mostly, they’re basket cases who are terrified of failure. They’re also so goal-oriented that they can become unglued if no one is pointing them to the next goal. And maybe there aren’t enough different goals. Med School, Law School, a job in finance. Beyond that, what? . . .
I am very aware of what I’d have to do if I want my four year old son to go to an Ivy League school, and I would consider it a form of torture to inflict that kind of regimen on him.

Exactly so. My oldest daughter is highly intelligent, has excellent study habits and graduated summa cum laude from a state university. (She worked her way through school as a Pizza Hut waitress). If I were a millionaire, I might have encouraged her to think of attending an elite school, but it simply makes no sense to put your kid through that kind of grind if you’re not rich.

What kind of parent would want their kid to be the poorest student at Yale? You want your kid to have the opportunity to be snubbed by a bunch of overprivileged brats? Are you crazy?

And here’s the worst of possibility: You put your kid through the wringer — total grindathon in high school, extra-curriculars out the wazoo, etc. — encouraging her to dream of that Ivy League acceptance letter that she’s not quite good enough to get. The psychic trauma of that rejection will haunt her forever and, having gotten her hopes up, of course, she’ll want to attend the “second-tier” private liberal arts school that does accept her, taking on outrageous student loan debt just to have that semi-elite credential.

She’ll probably major in Women’s Studies and hate you forever and, honestly, I can’t say I would blame her: You are a bad parent.

It’s better, you see, to avoid the high-pressure elitist ambitions. If your kid is truly superior, they will excel naturally, wherever they go to school. If my well-adjusted kids get rich, I hope they’ll send my grandchildren to the best university in the world.

Canadian Candidate Drops Out After Masturbation Video Surfaces

Trish Kelly was a candidate for local office on the ticket of the liberal “Vision Vancouver” party. On July 14, local political blogger Raymond Tomlin published a 2006 video Ms. Kelly produced for a website called WayOutWest. In the two-minute video, Ms. Kelly talks about her masturbation habits: “Pretty much I do it every night, after brushing my teeth, but before putting on my jammies.” Ms. Kelly is entirely clothed in the video, during which she describes “the single lifestyle” and an occasion “giving myself the f–k of my life.”

Three days after Tomlin called attention to the video, Kelly dropped out of the race for Vancouver’s Park Board:

“After 25 years of serving my community, I put my name forward as a Park Board nominee to move my life as a community activist fighting for social justice issues, to claiming a seat at the decision-making table,” Kelly stated. “Unfortunately, my work in theatre and as a sex-positive activist is being sensationalized — and will clearly continue to be — distracting from my efforts in the community and in the election campaign.”
Kelly, a popular member of Vancouver’s LGBT community, made a humorous video about masturbation, which was posted on YouTube by political activist Raymond Tomlin. . . .
“I have never hidden from this work,” Kelly said in the news release. “I hold no shame nor regret for the work I have produced. I have dedicated, and will continue to dedicate, much of my life to contributing to my community, to having difficult conversations, and to making myself vulnerable in order to make space for others.”

Wait a minute: Ms. Kelly is a “sex-positive activist,” widely recognized as a “member of Vancouver’s LGBT community,” and yet her solitary habits were the problem? Do people not understand the meaning of “LGBT”? It’s not about marching in parades, y’know.

If her video confession of lonely pleasure — “pretty much . . . every night” — was potentially embarrassing for the Vision Vancouver party, the reaction to her resignation has been memorable.

Feminists are blaming the patriarchy for Ms. Kelly’s misfortune.

Yes, that’s right. The only reason Ms. Kelly’s masturbation video was a potential political liability was that she is a woman, according to feminist blogger Jarrah Hodge: “For some reason young women candidates keep finding themselves attacked for expressing their sexuality, even though it’s not at all relevant to the office they’re seeking.” Really? Did I miss all those occasions when male candidates recorded videos “expressing their sexuality” and nobody cared? Joe Biden has made a lot of gaffes over the years, but I’m pretty sure he never uploaded a YouTube video discussing how often he wanks (and I’m certain nobody wants to know).

Contrary to Ms. Hodge’s claim, it isn’t just “young women candidates” who are “attacked for expressing their sexuality” in politics. Or has she forgotten the self-destruction of Anthony Weiner?

But never mind that. Why do you think that Ms. Kelly — who is very much “out” sexually — would have suddenly dropped off the ticket of this progressive party in a Canadian city that is as liberal as Seattle or San Francisco? It’s mysterious. A profile of her last month focused on blue-eyed Ms. Kelly’s claim that she has some unquantified percentage of “aboriginal” ancestry:

“I think visibly I represent the other minority aspects of my identity, like being a woman,” Kelly said by phone from Burnaby. “But it’s more an opportunity for me to advocate and be an ally to First Nations and aboriginal people in Vancouver, which is something that I feel strongly about because every time I do that I’m honouring my mother and she passed away five years ago. It was very important to her when she got her Métis status card.”
A member of the Vancouver food policy council since 2007, Kelly noted that it’s possible that Vancouver had aboriginal municipal politicians before Ken Clement — who was first elected to the school board in 2008 — but they just didn’t publicly identify themselves as such. According to Kelly, it’s important for her to be “transparent” about her Métis background as well as the fact she identifies as bisexual, queer, and femme.
“I feel that I’m a bridge between two groups,” Kelly said. “I’m Métis and the word Métis means a ‘blend’ or a ‘mix’ in French, and I’m also queer or bisexual. I have to claim those identities, because being femme in everyday society I can be read as just a straight woman, and being Métis I can be read as just white. So I politicize myself by owning these identities, which is part of how I politicize my identity but also part of how I act as another ally to people who are more targeted because of their visible appearance or how they’re read.”

Hmmm. So she politicizes her identity. This is very interesting.

Her position on transsexual “issues” is also interesting:

Kelly maintained that, after years of being a “strong ally” to the trans community, she’d like the chance to be more than a “good listener”. If she gains a seat on the park board in the November election, Kelly said, she would see to it that the April report of the city’s trans and gender-variant inclusion working group is implemented.
“The reason that I feel that is so important is because it addresses inclusivity for not just folks that are gender-variant or trans but also just looking at making community centres inclusive for people with disabilities or people who just don’t feel like they fit into social norms of what a person is supposed to look like,” Kelly said. “The work that’s been done is really strong, and I want to support it and make sure that it gets embedded within the park board.”

What were the recommendations of the “inclusion working group”?

“What we’re talking about is — 10, 20, 30 years from now — trans kids of the future won’t confined by the gender limitations and constraints of today,” [co-chairman Drew] Dennis, who’s also a member of the city’s LGBTQ advisory committee, said by phone. “That’s particularly exciting for me.” . . .
“Gender-segregated services and facilities can exclude trans* and gender variant community members if an inclusive approach is not taken,” the report states. “In these instances, trans* and gender variant individuals commonly face gender-policing in the form of verbal harassment, public-shaming and physical violence by others who feel they do not belong there.”

So, you go to a park in Vancouver, and if a man in a dress wants to use the women’s restroom, it’s “verbal harassment” for a woman to tell him he doesn’t belong there. I’m going to take a wild guess that the recommended “inclusive approach” to “gender-variant community members” might be somewhat controversial even in liberal Vancouver. And I’m going to take another wild guess that Ms. Kelly’s masturbation video — which highlighted her bisexual queer femme “sex-positive activism” — might have caused some voters to wonder, “What kind of long-term agenda is Vision Vancouver pursuing, if they’re willing to put this kinky weirdo on the Park Board, to eradicate ‘the gender limitations and constraints of today’?”

How much do I know about Canadian politics? Almost nothing. The last time I paid attention to Canada was when a lesbian hockey coach went to jail for having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Because I don’t know enough about politics in Vancouver to know if there is a conservative alternative on the ballot, I can’t predict the consequences of Vision Vancouver’s embarrassment. However, I do know that politicians with radical agendas don’t usually like it when people start noticing exactly how radical their agendas are. Maybe common-sense folks in Canada are paying attention now.
