Illinois Taxpayers Lose Super Bowl
Posted on | February 3, 2014 | 5 Comments
If you thought the Broncos sucked — and, wow, they were atrocious Sunday — check out this stupid TV ad:
Things are not well in the Land of Lincoln.
Illinois taxpayers are burdened by $7 billion in unpaid bills and over $100 billion in pension debt.
But, hey, they now have the amusement of watching their former senator screwing up America in pretty much the same way.
And the Bears are even worse than the Broncos.
This Should Not Be Necessary

Headline at Patterico:
No, Extending Unemployment Benefits
Does Not “Create Jobs”
The basic economics of this should be obvious — it’s simple common sense — but ignorance of basic economics is rampant and common sense is increasingly rare, and so Patterico feels obliged to rebut this fallacy promoted by You Know Who:
“Voting for extending unemployment insurance helps people and creates jobs,” Obama said. “Voting against it doesn’t.”
It’s about time we took on this silly notion that paying people not to work causes more people to work . . .
Read the whole thing. It makes my head hurt even to think that such fathomless stupidity is possible, and the fact that Obama got elected twice — because a majority of Americans are apparently brain-damaged — fills me with existential horror.

Breitbart embeds the video. Bill (love him or not) gives BHO the hardest 10 minutes of interviewing he’s had in 5 years of the running cock-up he calls his administration. Highly recommended.
Barack: you’re a no-talent rodeo clown. Hats off to your slick efforts to sell a pile of crap as competence. Nobody who’s sober, and has two brain cells, believes anything you say, irrespective of topic.

Well, are you?
As a fancier of the strigiformes family, especially Bubo scandiacus, I was glad to hear that there was going to be a huge national celebration…oh, wait, it’s the NFL championship? Football? Never mind. I’m sure there will be some linkagery of cheerleaders below, if you appreciate that sort of thing. Other links may not be safe for work, so exercise discretion in your clicking.
Laughing Conservative kicks off with Ariel Rebel, followed by Goodstuff who is celebrating the Year of the Horse by celebrating Ursula Andress. Speaking of cheerleaders, Fishersville Mike favors the Seattle Sea-gals. Ninety Miles From Tyranny serves up Morning Mistress, Hot Pick of the Late Night, and Girls With Guns. Animal Magnetism has Rule 5 Friday and something summery for Saturday, while Blackmailers Don’t Shoot tips us to Anastasia Ashley. First Street Journal sticks to the ladies in uniform; this week, it’s Russia’s militia* women of the MVD (Interior Ministry).
EBL’s herd of heifers this week includes Renee Ellmers, Zooey Deschanel, a guide to watering holes for Seattle & Denver fans in NYC with suitable (sic) cheerleader pix, Amanda Knox, Anna Kendricks, the Manning brothers’ backup dancers, and the Sea Gals’ Alicia Quaco.
Wine Women and Politics serves up red hotness, Babe Of The Day, Saturday Sweet Things, Blondes Are Beautiful, and the Friday Special, which comes with side orders of pulchritude and hotness.

Amanda Bynes Returns to Sanity?
Posted on | February 2, 2014 | 19 Comments
When the former Nickelodeon starlet had a very public nervous breakdown last year, I feared the worst. The prognosis for chronic schizophrenia — which is what the reported symptoms suggested — is not encouraging. The farther the disorder progresses before the patient gets treatment, the less likely recovery is, and by the time a judge ordered Amanda Bynes into treatment, she was completely bonkers. So it is surprisingly good news that she may be getting better:
According to some recent photos, the star has been undergoing treatments to remove the angel wings tattooed on her arm. . . .
The decision to remove her tattoo is likely coming as part of Bynes’ post–rehab lifestyle change. The actress was released from rehab in early December after undergoing four months of treatment for mental illness. Since her release, Bynes has taken big steps to put her life on a positive track.
Soon after rehab, Bynes debuted healthy long blond hair that reminded the world of her pre-Twitter meltdown days. This month, the 27–year–old has enrolled in fashion school to kickstart a new career direction.
Most people take sanity for granted, but if you’ve ever known someone who went nuts, you thank God for every sane day.
The Needle and the Spoon

I’ve seen a lot of people
Who thought they were cool,
But then again, Lord,
I’ve seen a lot of fools . . .
Don’t mess with the needle or a spoon
Or any trip to the moon.
It’ll take you away.
When I was a long-haired freak back in the 1970s, everybody knew heroin was a bad drug. There are no “recreational” heroin users, and a junkie will sell his soul to get another taste of slow-motion suicide. Somebody forgot to warn Philip Seymour Hoffman:
Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose late Sunday morning in his New York City apartment, a law-enforcement official said.
The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the exact cause of death. The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46 years old, was found dead at his apartment on Bethune Street in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan.
The actor was found in the bathroom of his fourth floor apartment in the Pickwick House around 11:15 a.m. by screenwriter David Katz, who called 911, the official said.
TMZ reports that he was found with a needle in his arm.

‘A Genius in France,’ IYKWIMAITYD
Posted on | February 2, 2014 | 23 Comments
When the rape case against Roman Polanski made headlines a few years ago, the film director’s defenders commonly made the argument that he shouldn’t be judged by his crime because, after all, he was considered a genius in France. As a euphemistic synonym for “celebrity pervert,” A Genius in France applies equally to Woody Allen:
Allen’s defenders correctly note that he denies the allegations, has never been convicted and should be presumed innocent. People weighed in on all sides, but one person who hasn’t been heard out is Dylan Farrow, 28, the writer and artist whom Allen was accused of molesting. . . .
Dylan writes:
That he got away with what he did to me haunted me as I grew up. I was stricken with guilt that I had allowed him to be near other little girls. I was terrified of being touched by men. I developed an eating disorder. I began cutting myself.
That torment was made worse by Hollywood. All but a precious few (my heroes) turned a blind eye. Most found it easier to accept the ambiguity, to say, “who can say what happened,” to pretend that nothing was wrong.
A Memeorandum thread with more commentary by Ann Althouse, Scared Monkeys, Dan Riehl and Tom Maguire at Just One Minute.
Nicholas Kristof should be careful. He might get sued for defamation by A Genius in France. Lot of that going around, y’know.
