Could the Creepy Orwellian Vibe at MSNBC Possibly Get Any Creepier?
Posted on | September 6, 2013 | 78 Comments
Ken Shepherd at Newsbusters notices that MSNBC’s Facebook page is basically publishing pro-Obama propaganda memes:
Ace of Spades highlighted this, and I was tempted to write an entire post explaining how MSNBC has maneuvered itself into its current bizarre predicament as The Bomb Syria Now Network.
I Watch MSNBC So You Don’t Have To™ and I can report that it’s Crazyville over there nowadays. Viewers must find themselves waxing nostalgic for the calm and reasoned voice of Keith Olbermann.
The other day, I saw Andrea Mitchell interview Bill Kristol on MSNBC and, if you have any memory at all, you know that Kristol was the Evil Neo-Con Liberals Hated Even More Than Karl Rove during the Bush era. This morning, I woke up early and caught the 4 a.m. replay of Rachel Maddow, and she was so rabidly pro-war you half-expected her to break out into the “Patton” monologue:
Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.
Men, all this stuff you’ve heard about America not wanting to fight — wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle.
What the hell has happened to MSNBC? Like I said, I was tempted to write an entire post explaining it, but then I decided to save that for a Monday column at The American Spectator. But having unfairly teased readers with this idea, now I’ll let you guys help me write the column. (Future headline at Media Matters: “Right-Wing Blogger Plagiarizes His Commenters.”) One of the texts by which I intend to analyze MSNBC is this 2003 item, “An Evening With Eric Alterman.”
See where I’m going with this one? Share you insights in the comments. Link your research. Make it easier for me to write that column.

An American Crisis: Fat Lesbians
Posted on | September 6, 2013 | 85 Comments
Why are lesbians fat? Or, why are fat women lesbians? Is correlation causation? This profound scientific mystery demands an answer, and you can’t have science without a federal research grant:
The federal government has spent $2.2 million studying why three quarters of lesbians are obese despite sequestration-mandated budget cuts that critics warned could “delay progress in medical breakthroughs.”
The National Institutes of Health awarded an additional $682,873 to Brigham and Women’s Hospital for the study on July 17. The project had received previous grants of $778,622 in 2011, and $741,378 in 2012. Total funding has reached $2,202,873.
The project has survived budget cuts due to sequestration, which the NIH warned would “delay progress in medical breakthroughs.” . . .
“Obesity is one of the most critical public health issues affecting the U.S. today,” the grant’s “public health relevance” statement reads. . . .
“It is now well-established that women of minority sexual orientation are disproportionately affected by the obesity epidemic, with nearly three-quarters of adult lesbians overweight or obese, compared to half of heterosexual women,” the project’s abstract states. “In stark contrast, among men, heterosexual males have nearly double the risk of obesity compared to gay males.”
Wait a minute — both lesbians and heterosexual males have obesity issues, compared to either straight women or gay men?
EXPOSURE TO VAGINA CAUSES OBESITY!
The science is settled. That will be $2.2 million, please.
UPDATE: Dana Pico notes that “majority sexual orientation” is now the official designation, which means that terms like “heterosexual” and “straight” will probably soon be classified as hateful epithets and anti-majority slurs. Of course, I’ve always thought of myself as suffering from hyperphallic vaginocentrism, but I just checked the mailbox and my disability payment still hasn’t arrived.
Oh, the horrible stigma and discrimination . . .

#Syria: Liberals Finally Beginning to Notice Obama Isn’t Really All That?
Posted on | September 5, 2013 | 46 Comments
Governing is so much harder than campaigning:
Chris Matthews of MSNBC, who served on Capitol Hill for years as a top Democratic aide, put the party’s dilemma in stark terms on Wednesday: “I think the Democrats are going to be forced to sacrifice men and women who really, really don’t want to vote for this. They’re going to have to vote for it to save the president’s hide. That’s a bad position to put your party in.”
In its lobbying effort to get support for military intervention in Syria, the Obama administration now has one clear target: the left. Yesterday, per the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent, White House officials held a conference call with House progressives. Today, Secretary of State John Kerry chats with liberal bloggers, and he also sits down for an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes. Here’s the logic behind the effort: Locking down House Democratic — and liberal — votes allows the White House to go back to House Speaker John Boehner to get the remainder of available Republican votes. But the White House will have to deliver a large share of Democratic votes. And consequently, we can report that momentum is growing for President Obama to address the nation in a primetime speech. If Democrats — many of whom were elected in the aftermath of Iraq — are going to have to cast a tough vote for military intervention, they’re going to need cover from Obama.
What’s amazing is that Obama has turned what should have been a simple decision into this grinding ordeal. If all we’re talking about is lobbing some missiles at Damascus, Obama could have ordered that and explained it later. George W. Bush would not have hesitated.
It’s like, you never ask your wife for permission to go play poker. You tell your wife you’re going to go play poker — or, perhaps, you don’t even tell her, you just go, and explain it later.
But because Obama wanted to give the appearance of acting on behalf of a coalition — in the name of “the international community” — he has turned this into a huge drama. I’m not in favor of attacking Syria (and according to a survey of conservative bloggers by John Hawkins, I’m not alone in my opposition), but either you do it or you don’t.
This drawn-out phony “debate” is just annoying. It looks weak, and weakness is synonymous with failure in foreign policy. Anyway, here are the latest headlines:

Brett Kimberlin Lies About His Crimes
Posted on | September 5, 2013 | 27 Comments
‘Speedway Bomber’ Brett Kimberlin was sentenced to 50 years in 1981
Matthew Vadum reminds us of something we should never forget:
“One of the blasts horribly maimed a man so badly that it directly led to that man’s suicide a few years later, which was proven when the widow of that bombing victim successfully sued and won a civil judgment against Kimberlin for $1.6 million . . .” Of course Kimberlin not only failed to pay the woman, but denied doing anything wrong. His refusal to cough up what he owed his victim’s wife led to a revocation of his parole.
He also claimed he was secretly exonerated by the powers that be. A record of this surreptitious pardon is bound to surface any day now, delivered by a leprechaun in a unicorn-pulled stage coach.
Kimberlin has never admitted guilt for the crimes he committed and, instead, has attempted to deceive foolish people with claims that “he was secretly exonerated,” and has gone so far as to depict himself as a “political prisoner.” Some people were never deceived:
“Kimberlin seemed to be the only one with a possible motive — to distract police attention from the Scyphers murder and delay or halt their quiet investigation of him.”
— R. Joseph Gelarden, Indianapolis Star, “Kimberlin case a maze of murder, deceit,” Oct. 18, 1981
“Kimberlin seemed to be the only one with a possible motive”?
But why would anyone want to murder a little girl’s grandmother?
Did you know that Craig Richard Gillette, a spokesman for Brett Kimberlin’s 501(c)3 Justice Through Music Project, pleaded guilty to a federal child pornography charge in 1999? Did you know that convicted felon Craig Richard Gillette is also involved with Brett Kimberlin’s band Op Critical? Probably just a coincidence, like that time when Brett Kimberlin was interviewed for City Paper in 1996:
Not all the songs on his album … have political overtones … others, like “Waiting to Meet” and “Teen Dream” (both about having sex with teenage girls) are lacking in subtlety and tend to make one squirm. But this is exactly what Kimberlin wants.
“I say things a lot of people are afraid to say. Yeah, ‘Teen Dream’ is about f–king a teenage girl. Every guy who’s seen a good-looking teenage girl has thought about it. I’m talking about that lecherous quality that every man, though he won’t act on it, has.”
So many coincidences, really. Reviewers of Mark Singer’s 1996 book, Citizen K: The Deeply Weird American Journey of Brett Kimberlin describe Kimberlin as “a top-flight con man” (Publisher’s Weekly), “a fairly typical hustler” (Library Journal) and “a man whose idea of the truth is utterly malleable . . . a dangerous smooth talker” (Kirkus Reviews). Wonder how he got so good at lying?
“For three consecutive summers, 1974 through 1976, they took vacations of a week or longer in Disney World, Mexico, and Hawaii. Sandi couldn’t get time off from work, so on these summer trips it was just the two of them — Brett and Jessica.
“Eyebrows levitated. A drug-dealing colleague had memories of conversations with Kimberlin that struck him as odd: ‘We’d see a girl, who was pubescent or prepubescent, and Brett would get this smile and say, “Hey, what do you think? Isn’t she great?” It made me very uncomfortable.’ Another recalled Kimberlin introducing Jessica as ‘my girlfriend,’ and if irony was intended, it was too subtle to register. To a coworker . . . Sandi confided that Kimberlin was ‘grooming Jessica to be his wife.’ To another, Sandi explained that although Kimberlin’s relationship with Jessica was chaste, he intended ‘to wait for her and would marry her.’”

Headline at “Kimberlin Unmasked”:
Proof That Writing Truthfully About
Brett Kimberlin Could Make You A Target
One of five named defendants in the lawsuit Kimberlin has filed in Montgomery County, Maryland, the identity of Kimberlin Unmasked so far remains unknown, but you can follow him or her on Twitter.
Brett Kimberlin could have been sentenced to 230 years in federal prison
Our co-defendant John Hoge is encouraging his readers to buy the book Citizen K via Amazon. Me, I’m selling popcorn.
You might be surprised (but I doubt it) that Kimberlin’s associate Neal Rauhauser has published an elaborate assertion that this is all about a conspiracy against . . . Neal:
I realized in early January of 2011 that these people weren’t going away without extraordinary effort. I spent the next two years leading them into one pratfall after another, which culminated in 87 House offices sending a letter to the Department of Justice over something a right wing provocateur had done to some of their foot soldiers in an effort to frame me. I thought that a letter to the DoJ’s Office of the Inspector General in November of 2012, which triggered an angry eighty minute call with an FBI agent the next day, would have been the last of it, but they keep dreaming up nonsense and trying to put me in the middle of it. . . .
I outed all the stuff I did in late March of 2012. Delusional, paranoid people kept ‘investigating’ me, which is code for committing crimes and trying to make it look like I was involved. I set them up a few more times, outed all of that in November of 2012, and the response was people committing a crime so ridiculous and yet so high visibility that I think some of them may face federal indictment for it. You would think that an enormous public humiliation like what happened in January of 2013 would finally scare a little sense into them, but in June of this year they were back with another halfassed ‘sting’ that promptly blew up in their faces. . . .
This is the first of two civil actions by Brett Kimberlin, another favorite target of rightwing fabricators. Caught between Kimberlin and the revelations of the Groundswell leak, I don’t think these guys are going to have much fun between now and the 2014 midterm. And nobody is taking their crazymaking seriously any more, which is a big relief to many people.
Neal Rauhauser was a speaker at the 2010 Netroots Nation conference
Does any of Neal’s paranoid gibberish make sense to you? If so, seek psychiatric help immediately, because Rauhauser is nuttier than a Snickers bar. An article from July 2012:
Rauhauser’s life reads like James Bond or Inspector Jacques Clouseau.
What is known for sure is that a family in Iowa adopted him as a child. He married, sired two children, his wife divorced him, he rarely had or has contact with his children, he owes between thirty and thirty five thousand dollars in back child support (a federal and state criminal offense), and is involved with Speedway Bomber, Brett Kimberlin.
Rauhauser is a master of black operations and political dirty tricks, especially political cyber warfare. Like Kimberlin, he uses lawfare, abusing the legal system to get revenge on his perceived enemies. Like Brett Kimberlin, Rauhauser’s enemies are people who try to expose him, have an opposing political point of view, or disagree with him.
My June 2012 report about Neal Rauhauser — “‘A Faint Whiff of Vigilante Hysteria’: Weinergate’s Kimberlin Connection” — explains the events that brought Rauhauser into Kimberlin’s orbit:
In February [2012], Rauhauser published a bizarre eight-page document (“Andrew Breitbart’s ISR Cell?”) expressing the belief that he and Kimberlin were targets of a conspiracy involving Andrew Breitbart and many others, including Mike Stack, who played a key role in exposing Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner’s online sexcapades.
Under his alias “Stranded Wind” at Daily Kos, Rauhauser declared on July 27, 2011, that conservative blogger Patrick “Patterico” Frey “looks to be a pretty good candidate for the planner/operator behind Weinergate.” In June 2012, Rauhauser falsely accused Brandon Darby of obstruction of justice. And using the online alias “Carlito2000,” Rauhauser was subsequently involved in the strange events that preceded Barrett Brown’s September 2012 arrest for threatening an FBI agent. Rauhauser also evidently helped encourage Nadia Naffe’s frivolous lawsuit against Patterico: “Rauhauser proudly trumpeted his silly but telling hope that the lawsuit would accomplish his (and Kimberlin’s) long-held goal of costing me my job.”
To quote Da Tech Guy: “Discovery should be interesting.” And to quote myself, the Five Most Important Words in the English Language are:
UPDATE: Oh, my, isn’t this just classic? Neal Rauhauser attempts to persuade journalists covering the Barrett Brown case that Brown was a victim of Neal’s enemies:
Barrett = https://t.co/AmbojlcKMp "a lengthy manipulation campaign" BY @NealRauhauser! http://t.co/e55GcHrhzG | | @paulcarr @mathewi @Shoq
— Robert Stacy McCain (@rsmccain) September 5, 2013
Anyone who wants to understand what happened to Barrett Brown really needs to read “The Kook Who Knew Too Much.”

I’m getting a late start on this thanks to being distracted by people whining about Dragon*Con and Worldcon, which were on the same weekend this year. If you’re interested in SF fandom, you can go read my LJ post about it, which I didn’t do here because it’s not really pertinent.
Anyhow, what I want to talk about this week is the Canon. The stuff everybody should have at least a passing familiarity with (in my arrogant opinion, anyway) when it comes to science fiction and fantasy. Not all of the Canon is books, and not all of it is award-winning stuff, but in one way or another, it’s had an influence on the field. So you ought to know something about it, even if all you do is go browse the Wikipedia article – and truthfully, for some books like Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Dispossessed, you’re probably better off doing that than actually reading the book.
Let’s start with some award-winning stuff, edited by a legend in the field: The Hugo Winners (Volume I & II), edited by Isaac Asimov. Along with The Hugo Winners, Vol. 3
, this covers all the Hugo-winning short fiction from 1955-1975, and if nothing else, should give you a pretty good idea of what you’ll like and what you won’t in SF. Just about all the great authors are in here: Poul Anderson, Gordon Dickson, Harlan Ellison, Philip Jose Farmer, Ursula K. LeGuin, Fritz Leiber, Anne McCaffrey, Larry Niven, Theodore Sturgeon and a bunch of others. Asimov did two more of these anthologies and the first two editions of The New Hugo Winners
before his death in 1992; he was succeeded as editor by Connie Willis and Greg Benford.
I’d also recommend The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Vol. 1, a sort of pre-Nebula Award anthology of short stories voted on by the Science Fiction Writers of America. The novella collection wound up being broken into two: The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume 2A
and The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume 2B
. Unlike the Hugo anthologies, the SF Hall of Fame anthologies only have one story per author, but like them, it’s all good stuff.
Asimov was a solid writer in his own right, and is perhaps best remembered for the Foundation trilogy, I, Robot
(which introduced the Three Laws of Robotics), and The Caves of Steel
, a murder mystery with robots. Alongside Asimov, of course, is Heinlein, whose Future History spanned three anthologies: The Man Who Sold The Moon
, The Green Hills of Earth
, and Revolt in 2100
and two novels, Orphans of the Sky
and Methuselah’s Children
– or you can get the (almost) complete package in The Past Through Tomorrow
.
Alongside Asimov and Heinlein, other Golden Age writers of note were Jack Williamson, best known for his novels about the robot Humanoids which begins with the eerie With Folded Hands; and A.E. van Vogt, perhaps best remembered for the mutant novel Slan
but also for The World of Null-A
and The Weapon Shops of Isher
, which gave us the libertarian rallying cry “The Right To Buy Weapons Is The Right To Be Free”.
Which just barely gets us out of the 1940s. Next week, a stab at the memorable novels and authors of the 1950s and early 60s.
