Ol’ Senator Decades-past-sell-by-date sure is feeling the love on Twitter tonight:

Two aspects of being a good leader are (a) developing subordinates, and (b) knowing when to turn over to them. If Lindsey Graham is all you’ve got, and you’ve stayed this long past a seemly departure, well, Senator, stand by for flack. You wore the cover off your war record in 2008, and the heckling will only get more caustic from here, sir.

Why Isn’t Craig Richard Gillette’s Name on the Maryland Sex Offender Registry?

Posted on | July 31, 2013 | 48 Comments

As we now know, Craig Richard Gillette pleaded guilty to a federal child pornography charge in 1999. One would think such a conviction would require Gillette, a spokesman for Brett Kimberlin’s 501(c)3 Justice Through Music Project, to register as a sex offender. Yet a search of the Maryland Sex Offender Registry does not show a listing for Craig Gillette, who currently resides in Cabin John, Maryland.

Or so I’m told.

A quick bit of research shows that failing to register as a sex offender is a federal crime, as explained in a press release announcing the recent case of a Maryland resident’s prosecution:

As part of an overall strategy to combat child exploitation, the U.S. Marshals Service launched a nationwide operation in 2010 to target sex offenders who knowingly fail to comply with their sex offender registration requirements.  The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act is part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act in 2006.  The Adam Walsh Act also provides for the use of federal law enforcement resources, including the U.S. Marshals Service, to assist the states in locating and apprehending non-compliant sex offenders.

Perhaps someone can ask convicted felon Brett Kimberlin where federal authorities might find Craig Richard Gillette in Cabin John, Maryland. Or just call the Justice Department at (202) 252-6933.

UPDATE: As a question, get an answer:

[Gillette was released from federal prison] in 2001, prior to the feds mandating sex registry for these offenders. 3 years of supervised release without special conditions it seems. The registries you cite contain those convicted and sentenced by state courts for sex crimes.

So, there is a “federal pervert loophole,” so to speak?

UPDATE II: Thanks to Lee Stranahan for turning up this chapter that details sex-offender registry for those convicted of federal child pornography charges. I’m not sure what this means for Brett Kimberlin’s associate Craig Richard Gillette, but there seems to be a general consensus among those who have looked at the case that the law would require him to be registered. Of course, I’m not a lawyer, but this situation would seem to need explanation.

OMFG: Did Brett Kimberlin’s Buddy Cop a Plea on Child Pornography Charges?

Posted on | July 31, 2013 | 84 Comments

Craig Richard Gillette was detained by bailiffs after Tuesday’s Maryland hearing where Tetyana Kimberlin was granted a protective order against her estranged husband Brett Kimberlin. Gillette has long been associated with Kimberlin’s 501(c)3 Justice Through Music Project. It was Gillette who showed up outside this year’s CPAC “Blog Bash” to photograph the bloggers in attendance.

So when John Hoge reported that Gillette had been released from federal prison in 2001, the obvious question was, “What did Gillette serve time for?” We do not yet know the nature of the charge, but online documents indicate that Gillette agreed to a plea bargain with federal prosecutors in 1999, and was ordered to get mental health and substance abuse treatment. And the terms of his bond, set at a January 1999 pre-trial hearing, are highly suggestive:

Entered: 01/21/1999
Plea Agreement
Docket Text: Plea Agreement Hearing as to Craig Richard Gillette held before Judge Albert V. Bryan Jr. ( Reporter: McCoy.) USA appeared through: Smagala. Dft(s) appeared w/counsel Brooks. Deft. FA, PG to Cr. Info. Accepted. Referred to PO for PSIR and cont. to 4/9/99 at 9:00 for G/L sentencing. Deft. recognized in PR Bond of $5,000 w/cond: report to PTS; undergo and pay for substance abuse testing and treatment; avoid all contact with anyone under age of 18; not possess or have under his control any matter that is pornographic or that depicts or alludes to sexual activity of persons under age of 18; not possess or use any computer or computer equipment except for work purposes; not utilize or access the Internet or any on-time service; furnish detailed telphone and credit card bills and/or bank records as requested by PTS; notify his employer of the instant offense. Deft. released. (clerk)

Filed & Entered: 04/09/1999
Set/Reset Hearings
Docket Text: Sentencing held before Judge Albert V. Bryan Jr. ( Reporter: R. Hopchas) USA appeared through: Gerry Smagala Dft(s) appeared w/ counsel: Louis Brooks. Craig Richard Gillette (1) count(s) 1. Deft.’s motion for downward departure argued and denied. JUDGMENT: Guilty. Deft. committed to the custody of BOP for 27 mos. w/3 year super. release term and assessed $100. While incarcerated deft. to receive mental health and substance abuse treatment. Cond. of S/R: participate in substance abuse treatment and mental health programs at the direction of PO. Deft. remanded.

These details were sent to me by someone who hopes to obtain further details about Craig Richard Gillette’s federal conviction and, if this is what it looks like — c’mon, aren’t these highly unusual terms to be specified as conditions of pre-trial release? — well, maybe we could see some very interesting headlines about Brett Kimberlin in the near future.

UPDATE: Patterico adds background about Brett’s buddy:

Gillette appears to be employed by Justice Through Music, Brett Kimberlin’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit. He was quoted in 2007 as being a “spokesman for the organization” and he writes post on their blog.
Hoge does not say how he knows Gillette met Kimberlin in prison, but Hoge has been talking to Kimberlin’s wife, who recently separated from him and has sought charges against him for a sex offense.

Oh, right, I almost forgot: Tetyana says Kimberlin is a sex offender. Gee, it’s funny how little things like that slip your mind, kind of like the murder of a little Indiana girl’s grandmother.

UPDATE IIJeff Dunetz’s account of Gillette’s Blog Bash appearance:

At about 9pm my daughter . . . ran up to me exclaiming “Daddy there is someone outside taking pictures through the window.” . . .
As I went outside to confront the cameraman he ran across the street. As I followed he put his camera up to take pictures of me. Eventually he put down his camera and got nose to nose. . . .
With our faces almost touching he said, “You can’t intimidate me.” I replied “You can’t kiss me.”
Eventually he admitted who sent him to BlogBash — Brett Kimberlin, the Speedway Bomber.  Apparently the man who had tried to  intimidate the party venue from hosting the event, who [allegedly] had been tweeting nasty slanders against myself and other members of the BlogBash committee for the better part of two weeks … hired a photographer to take pictures of the party … didn’t have the guts to take his own pictures.
So goes it [with] all bullies. Show weakness and they will continue to attack — stand up to them as many of us have been doing with blog posts and other writing — they back off.

You can see the photos at The Lid,

UPDATE III: John Hoge has obtained the court document on Craig Richard Gillette: “18:2252.F 18:2252(a)(4)(B) Possession of child pornography.” And I’m sure it’s just a random coincidence that someone convicted on child pornography charges would be so closely associated with Brett Kimberlin.

UPDATE IV: In case you missed it, Brett Kimberlin has once more accused Aaron Walker of harassment, and also accused John Hoge of harassment. Of course, lying felon Brett Kimberlin considers it “harassment” to tell the truth about Brett Kimberlin. And it seems there is a certain word that offends Brett Kimberlin very deeply, perhaps because it is so accurate. Of course, a professional journalist would never call Brett Kimberlin that word. Even with someone like Kimberlin’s buddy Craig Gillette, a conviction for child pornography does not mean he’s a pedophile, a diagnostic term.

Others, however, use the word colloquially. More than 400,000 times.

UPDATE V: Why Isn’t Craig Richard Gillette’s Name on the Maryland Sex Offender Registry?

Intern Blows Up Weiner Campaign; Spokeswoman Stays Classy: ‘F–king C–t’

Posted on | July 31, 2013 | 42 Comments

It’s been all over the blogosphere, so you probably know the story by now: A former intern for the Anthony Weiner mayoral campaign named Olivia Nuzzi wrote a column for the New York Daily News explaining that Weiner’s staff was mostly a bunch of kids hoping to punch their tickets for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Later, during an interview with Talking Points Memo about Weiner’s fundraising,  his spokeswoman Barbara Morgan went off on an expletive-laden rant about Nuzzi, dropping multiple f-bombs as well as a couple of crude synonyms for “vagina” and a coinage, “slutbag.”

This is the communications director of the campaign, OK?

We can stipulate that Barbara Morgan has a point: Olivia Nuzzi signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), commonly require in all political campaign work. Violating an NDA in this manner — quitting or getting fired from a campaign and then badmouthing the campaign — is career suicide in politics. Olivia Nuzzi has forever branded herself as a selfish untrustworthy backstabber.

In other words, a typical liberal woman.

Having said that, however, when bad things start happening — and nothing good has happened to Anthony Weiner’s campaign lately — the last thing a campaign spokesman wants to do is to pour kerosene on the raging bonfire of bad news. Morgan claims she thought her interview with Talking Points Memo was off the record, but TPM editor Josh Marshall says this is not so.

What kind of communications director would say stuff like this to a reporter under any circumstance? I mean, I’ve had conversations with top campaign staffers over beers at 1 a.m. — sources I considered friends, who knew I was never going to burn them — and they would still be trying to spin me with a bunch of happy-talk.

Anyway, the Barbara Morgan meltdown is destined to be a campaign legend and quickly turned “slutbag” into a viral phenomenon. But I missed it last night because the story broke while I was busy writing my column about the cultural significance of Sydney Leathers:

Sydney Leathers was a girlfriend for hire and any old creep with a thousand bucks to spare could have had the pleasure of her companionship, such as it was. The news that Anthony Weiner’s former sexting partner sold her services via so-called “sugar daddy” Internet sites was not exactly shocking to anyone who has paid attention to the mores and manners of American youth in the past couple of decades.
Popular culture has been so corrupt for so long that many young people are incapable of making any distinction between vice and virtue, categories that sophisticated people are expected to reject as old-fashioned, if not altogether obsolete or, indeed, hatefully oppressive. As for the attitudes of adults, well, they are supposed to strive for eternal youth, to conform both their appearance and their appetites to the fashionable standards prevailing among the most shamelessly adventurous adolescents. Anyone who cares to examine the explicit exchanges between Sydney Leathers and Anthony Weiner will find it difficult to determine which of them was more immature — or more deviant.
“Deviant” is a word we don’t hear much anymore, for the simple reason that its meaning has become invalid or irrelevant or, as any Democrat would say, an expression of hate. America has in recent years gradually lost its vocabulary of moral judgment. . . .

Please read the whole thing at The American Spectator. Honestly, Barbara Morgan has done us all a huge favor by telling the truth about who liberals really are. What kind of woman would associate herself with a Democrat like Anthony Weiner? A slutbag.

A Dozen Short Points On The Big Picture

Posted on | July 30, 2013 | 27 Comments

by Smitty

I’d just like to respond to a variety of my good interlocutors, briefly, on a swath of topics.
Social:

  • Life: begins when the information that defines you is available: conception. You own your own greatness, or not. You don’t own the non-greatness of others.
  • Gender: is defined by chromosomes. Become the best male or female you can: body, mind, and soul.
  • Marriage: has its premise in the production of life. Understood, other variations. But what difference, at some point centuries hence, do they make?
  • Freewill: if you’re arguing it doesn’t exist, then why’re you even reading this?
  • Unscalability: people don’t scale. The larger the group you consider, the less powerful assertions you can make about them, without stooping to the crudest stereotypes. There is an inverse square law afoot: the family is strongest, followed by the clan, followed by professions, citizenship, etc. This is why if you want to move a large number of people in an organized way, you have to thrash their individuality and put them in a uniform. This is why the one-size-fits-all theories of Progress are dying. To the extent it can be said to work empirically, the one-size-fits-all of Jesus Christ is the best you’ve got, and even Christians don’t agree on what that means.

Political:

  • Conservativism: is based upon the Lockean notion of the individual.
  • Progressivism: has roots in a strange intellectual love affair between Rousseau and Marx. Whatever misguided idealism informed the original Progressives, it’s all a steaming loaf of debt and ersatz aristocracy now, Republican and Democrat.
  • Republicans: born to end slavery, the elite of the GOP is fungible with the Democrats, perpetuating debt slavery.
  • Federal Reserve: the power to inflate the currency urinates all over the spirit of the Constitution, granting too much power to un-elected knobs. The lack of will from either branch of the Ruling Class even to audit, much less reform this beast is telling.
  • ObamaCare: is the legislative/economic equivalent of the Doomsday Machine from Star Trek. In true Progressive fashion, it accomplishes the opposite of its title. This is a time, to quote Iron Maiden, to “Die With Your Boots On.” Can this bureaucratic D&D Black Pudding be stopped? Hopefully; my metaphorical blender just ‘sploded.

Historical:

  • Slavery: sucked. It had a variety of social and economic causes, including false notions of inferiority based upon extrinsic characteristics. However, the guilt for slavery is owned by those who actually held slaves, just as the guilt for Jim Crow is owned by its perpetuators in the modern Racism Idustrial Complex. I forgive those who try to pin such guilt on me, in the hope that, if forgiveness spreads, growth can occur.
  • Foreign Policy: if you think about it, our Constitution is defensive in nature: some powers were delegated by the States to a Federal government for mutual protection. Progress has begotten the Team America World Police concept since Bretton Woods. That it ran for 50 years needs to be seen as about as good as it gets. What follows is totally unclear.

So, there you have it. These are my positions, arrived at slowly, and not given to much adjustment. I’m not accepting blame, nor do I think I’ve blamed anyone in particular. I don’t even blame Obama for ObamaCare. Our situation sucks, and it sucked Cthulhu right out of R’lyeh. If Barack had stayed a stoned Hawaiian, tearing tickets at Jack Johnson concerts or whatever, they’d’ve polished another tool for his role. So don’t over-credit the putz. Our decadent point in American history has plenty of sad little Commies who could’ve done the job. Our task is to realize the dream of the Founders, with an informed, educated electorate.

Given a Hypothetical Choice Between Monica Lewinsky and Sydney Leathers?

Posted on | July 30, 2013 | 87 Comments

De gustibus non est disputandum, of course, but any man who would prefer tattooed Sydney to the alabaster-complexioned Monica . . .

Maybe it takes a Southern good ol’ boy to understand why Bill Clinton liked more cushion for the pushin’, as fellows say down home.

Not that Sydney Leathers is particularly thin, but when it comes to the question of which gal looks like she’d appreciate a dinner date at Cracker Barrel — country fried steak and gravy, turnip greens, pinto beans, hashbrown casserole, biscuits and cornbread — I don’t think there can be any question: Monica is the plus-size winner.

What a lovely girl! Her green eyes are beautiful, her dark hair is beautiful and her mouth . . . Well, of course, I’m a happily married man, but this is strictly a hypothetical scenario, remember?

That’s why I was so strongly in favor of President Clinton’s impeachment. He was under oath when he was asked about Monica and, if he had any regard for truth, Bill would have had no choice but to answer: “Oh, hell, yes. I did that gal every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Honestly, I just couldn’t help myself. That chubby young gal flashing her thong panties at me? Like the song said, I took one look and I was fractured. Tried to walk and I was lame.”

Maybe some men honestly find Monica Lewinsky unattractive. Who am I to judge? Now let us recite the Good Ol’ Boys Prayer: Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from horny fat girls . . .
