Can We At Least Agree That Nobody — and Certainly No Republican — Cares About Hunter Biden’s ‘Struggle’?

Posted on | December 13, 2023 | Comments Off on Can We At Least Agree That Nobody — and Certainly No Republican — Cares About Hunter Biden’s ‘Struggle’?

Today I was watching CNN (so you don’t have to) while the World’s Most Famous Crackhead gave his little speech on Capitol Hill:

Hunter stated: “They have ridiculed my struggle with addiction. They’ve belittled my recovery. And they’ve tried to dehumanize me!”
“They have tried to dehumanize me to embarrass and damage my father, who has devoted his entire life to public service,” Hunter Biden said. “For six years I have been the target of the unrelenting Trump attack machine shouting ‘Where’ Hunter?’ Well here’s my answer. I am here.”
“Let me state as clearly as I can; my father was not financially involved in my business, not as a practicing lawyer, not as a board member of Burisma, not my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not in my investments at home or abroad and certainly not as an artist,” he said. “I am here to testify at a public hearing today to answer any of the Committee’s legitimate questions.”
“In the depths of my addiction, I was extremely irresponsible with my finances, but to suggest that is grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond absurd. It’s shameless. There’s no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen,” he said.

The overpaid idiot anchors for CNN — overpaid, because almost nobody watches their network — did nothing to push back against this dramatic nonsense about Hunter’s “struggle with addiction,” which is irrelevant to the congressional investigation, except that it is reasonable to ask why so many foreign clients were eager to give millions of dollars to a ne’er-do-well crackhead whose only qualification as a “consultant” was that his father happened to be Vice President of the United States at the time.

Of course, Hunter has inherited his father’s habitual dishonesty — “My Word as a Biden!” — and was obviously lying about his father being “not financially involved,” as everybody ought to know by now:

Hunter Biden made clear during a press conference Wednesday that he will only testify under his own rules and will not comply with House investigators’ lawful subpoena that compelled his testimony behind closed doors at 9:30 a.m. the same day.
Hunter Biden’s failure to appear before House investigators will likely be a factor in formalizing the House impeachment inquiry vote Wednesday evening regarding President Joe Biden’s involvement in the Biden family business.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) pointed to six cases of mounting evidence on Tuesday against Joe Biden that “cannot be ignored”:

1. Biden family members and Biden business-linked entities received more than $15 million from individuals in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania, and China.
2. Joe Biden spoke with Hunter Biden’s business associates at least 22 times.
3. Joe Biden lied about his involvement in the business.
4. Joe Biden received “direct monthly payments” from Hunter Biden’s “Owasco PC” business account, which received “payments from Chinese state-linked companies and other foreign nationals and companies.”
5. Investigators flagged the Justice Department’s “deviations” in the five-year investigation into Hunter Biden.
6./ An FBI FD-1023 form alleges Joe Biden accepted a $5 million bribe while vice president. . . .

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) and Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) previously threatened to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress if he did not comply with both a public and private interview.

Hunter Biden and his spin doctors on CNN apparently expect us to forget about this rather important piece of evidence:

So far as I’m aware, CNN has never even mentioned that, so that their audience has no clue of just how clear the evidence is about Joe Biden personally profiting from his son’s foreign bribery scheme.

Rather than to emulate the kind of disingenuous games that Hunter is playing — “Those mean Republicans are dehumanizing me!” — I will explain exactly why the GOP-controlled House committees want to have a “closed door” interview with Hunter, and it’s not because they’re trying to hide anything. What they want is to have him provide a sworn deposition, which they will then use as a basis for questioning him when he is called to testify publicly to the committee. The perjury trap, you see.

Everybody on Capitol Hill knows how this game is played: You get the witnesses on record, under oath, in a private deposition and, if you then think you can prove that they’ve lied in their deposition, you call them up in a public hearing and confront them with the evidence, citing their deposition and pointing out the discrepancy between what they previously said under oath, demanding that they tell the truth now.

This kind of thing provides headline-making drama, and quite naturally, Hunter Biden doesn’t want to be part of it, so he is . . . Well, he’s defying a subpoena in contempt of Congress, is what he’s doing. But whereas CNN would be in 24/7 BREAKING NEWS mode if anyone connected to Trump had done this, they treated it as if complying with a congressional subpoena is optional when the Republicans are in charge.

The Republicans in charge are very serious:

House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) made the following statement after Hunter Biden failed to appear for his deposition:
“Hunter Biden today defied lawful subpoenas and we will now initiate contempt of Congress proceedings. We will not provide special treatment because his last name is Biden. As our committees were today prepared to depose Hunter Biden, he chose to make a public statement on Capitol Hill instead where he said his father, Joe Biden was not financially involved in his family’s business dealings. Exactly how was Joe Biden involved? Evidence shows Joe Biden met with Hunter’s business associates and his name was at the center of the family business strategy.
“Today, the House will vote on an impeachment inquiry resolution to strengthen our legal case in the courts as we face obstruction from the White House and witnesses. Today’s obstruction by Hunter Biden reinforces the need for a formal vote. President Biden and his family must be held accountable for their corruption and obstruction. And we will provide that to the American people.”
A deposition is a standard investigative procedure used by attorneys and congressional investigators. Democrats have used depositions in their investigations, including the Adam Schiff impeachment inquiry. Even Jamie Raskin emphasized the importance of depositions.

Have we forgotten what happened when Steve Bannon didn’t want to comply with the J6 Committee’s subpoena? Anyway, I owe Ace of Spades some serious hat-tipping for this, so go read his reaction.

Save The Republic

via PowerLine:

21% of Likely U.S. voters who voted by absentee or mail-in ballot in the 2020 election say they filled out a ballot, in part or in full, on behalf of a friend or family member, such as a spouse or child

Voting assistance is perfectly legal at the polling place, with a consent form, in Virginia.

The reason is security: everyone should be marking their own ballot secretly, unless the explicitly request support.

The bulk of those screaming about getting more ballots into more hands seem to have scant regard for security. Nefarious purpose? You be the judge.

I don’t hear too many nominally “conservative” voices arguing for election reform, with a paper ballot on a designated Election Day, and substantive audits to keep everything genteel.

Possibly there is a reason for that.

David Drake, 9/24/1945-12/10/2023

Has it really been two years since I posted this? I guess it has. Twitter has had a fair chunk of tweets over the last day or two devoted to mourning David Drake, whose impact on science fiction, fantasy, and horror cannot be overstated. There is a wealth of autobiographical information and occasional comments on his writing at his website, which I cannot recommend highly enough. The various pages devoted to Dave and his works on TVTropes.org are also worth reading, though I warn you that they’re loaded with spoilers.

My connection with Dave started when I was in high school in the late 1970s, reading the collection of Galaxy I’d been gifted by the school librarians, and discovering “Under The Hammer” and “But Loyal To His Own”. I wrote him some letters, to which he politely replied, and I kept an eye out as he began to become a Big Name in Baen’s stable of authors. A few years later, I joined the Army, and as most of you know, managed to wangle an assignment to the 340th ASA Company of the 11th ACR. This was not, strictly speaking, the same company Drake had been in during Vietnam, but it carried the lineage of that MI detachment, and when we finally met years later at Arcana, he was pleased that we had that connection. With the exception of his Cthulhu mythos stories (which were arguably more horror than fantasy) I was never that interested in his fantasy novels, but I read and/or bought just about every SF story he ever wrote. As others can testify, he was a fine writer, a great guest at conventions, and a wonderful human being. Not an officer, but definitely a gentleman, and a good friend, as Sarah Hoyt attests on her blog. We had hoped to have him as our Guest of Honor at the upcoming Son of Silvercon II, but as Stacie Collins reminds us, “You wanna hear God laugh? Tell him about your plans!”

See you at Fiddler’s Green, sir.

Apologies for the lack of posting in the latter half of the week. For no good reason I can think of, I got very little sleep before having to drive to Las Vegas for a pulmonary appointment Thursday afternoon, and as a result I checked into the Stratosphere around 1700 and promptly went to bed, not waking until 0500 Friday – when I had to check out and dash up to the VA for a series of appointments early in the morning. Refueled at Maverik, grabbed a couple of BBQ pork rib buns (superior to the McRib in a number of ways) and drove back to Tonopah, where once again I went promptly to bed and didn’t get up until 0900 Saturday. Clearly, I’m getting too old for this three/four-hour drive into the flatlands and back. Or maybe I need to stop more often and not try to push straight through.
The Senators had a perfectly .500 week, losing two out of three to the Dodgers, but taking two out of three from the Red Sox under Robot Ted Williams, since I was too tired to manage. The sole win against the Dodgers went to Juan Marichal (his 23rd) while Jim Kaat and Pat Dobson (14th & 15th wins) got the W’s against the Sox.
