Fred Thompson Makes News With Benghazi Comments at AFP Event

News happens in weird ways. While we were driving to today’s Americans for Prosperity event in West Chester, Ali Akbar mentioned an article he’d just seen at Foreign Policy about the Benghazi attack. Meanwhile, CBS News was reporting that “during the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi, the Obama Administration did not convene its top interagency counterterrorism resource: the Counterterrorism Security Group, (CSG).”

My mind wasn’t on Benghazi much, and when we got there, the sleep shortage started catching up with me. Quite literally, I was nodding off at one point during Fred Thompson’s speech. And then Fred started talking about Benghazi.


 


 

He never raised his voice, but he was clearly angry and, when it was over, it was obvious that Fred had definitely made news:

Former Sen. Fred Thompson today said he was “totally disgusted” by the Obama administration’s handling of the Libya terrorist attack, saying that U.S. officials failed to act “while our people were being systematically slaughtered” at the Benghazi consulate.
Speaking at an event sponsored by the free-market group Americans for Prosperity, the former Republican senator from Tennessee invoked his experience nearly 40 years ago as a Watergate investigator, saying that Congress must “get to the bottom of” the administration’s failures in the Sept. 11 incident that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead in Libya.
“This is probably the biggest cover-up in American history – and you’re talking to an expert in cover-ups,” Thompson said. . . .

The President earlier today issued a proclamation recognizing November as Military Family Month. It notes:

We each have a solemn duty to serve our Armed Forces and their families as well as they serve us…This month, we reaffirm that we will always lift up our military families – not just when their loved are away, but also long after the welcome home ceremonies are over.

Yeah, that’ll sure swing the military vote next Tuesday. Technically, Woods & Doherty were not part of a DoD mission per se, but their fate epitomizes the subtext of disdain this President seems to feel for all ‘corpse men’.

BOYLE: SEN. MENENDEZ REFUSES TO RELEASE TRAVEL RECORDS

The prostitution allegations against New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez have caused the Democrat’s challenger, Republican Joe Kyrillos, to demand that Menendez release his travel records. There are important questions about Menendez’s trips to the Dominican Republic — where two prostitutes have claimed they were paid to have sex with him — and yet the senator’s staff will not respond to the Daily Caller’s Matthew Boyle’s questions about the records:

Menendez spokeswoman Tricia Enright has refused to answer any questions on the subject. . . .
Enright has not answered when asked if Menendez will release his travel records.
Menendez’s 2012 public schedule shows no events listed for Easter or the following three days. On Easter Sunday this year, aircraft records obtained by TheDC show that Menendez donor Salomon Melgen’s private plane left Florida the morning of Easter Sunday, stopped at the Teterboro private airport near Menendez’s home in New Jersey, and flew on to the Dominican Republic.
Two days later it returned to the United States, from a private airport near Casa de Campo.
Melgen, an ophthalmologist and owner of an eye clinic in Florida, appears to have lent Menendez the use of his plane on several occasions and it is known that Sen. Menendez has been a regular visitor to the Dominican Republic.
On at least one occasion, according to a news account, Menendez has been a guest at Melgen’s Casa de Campo home.
Melgen has donated $14,700 to Menendez’s campaigns since 1993, with the bulk of it coming since he became a U.S. Senator, according to Federal Election Commission data collected by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Smoke, fire, some assembly required. If Sen. Menendez has nothing to hide, why is his office refusing to address Boyle’s questions?

Democrat Troll Accounts Wage Hateful ‘War on Women’ Against Dana Loesch

Evidently, the polls in the Missouri Senate race — which show Claire McCaskill at only 45% and Todd Akin within 2 points — have unhinged Democrats, who have adopted a “kill-the-messenger” frenzy against St. Louis-based Dana Loesch:

Why does Twitter @Support permit vile monsters like @KognitiveDiss to use their service, and thereby make Twitter such a toxic pool of filth? This isn’t about “Free Speech.” The First Amendment imposes no requirement on commercial providers to allow their services to be abused in this digusting manner. Dana Loesch’s political opinions — she wrote about the Missouri Senate race yesterday — should not make her an open target for these kind of hatefully obscene attacks from troll accounts.

KYRILLOS CAMPAIGN RESPONDS TO MENENDEZ SEX ACCUSATIONS

The campaign of Joe Kyrillos, New Jersey Republican candidate for Senate, has issued a statement regarding the accusations that Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) had sex with prostitutes during trips to the Dominican Republic:

“Like the recent Secret Service sex scandal in Colombia, the allegations reported today are deeply disturbing and raise serious questions,” said Kyrillos Campaign Communications Director Meaghan Cronin. “Senator Menendez must do the right thing and help settle this matter by immediately releasing his schedule and travel documents from the time the alleged incidents occurred. The people of New Jersey deserve answers today.”

In a brief telephone conversation, Ms. Cronin said the Kyrillos campaign had no forewarning of the Menendez scandal: “We were as shocked as everybody else.”

UPDATE: Kerry Picket of The Washington Times reminds us how Menendez responded to accusations that Secret Service agents had sex with prostitutes in Cartagena, Colombia: “If the facts are true, they should all be fired. The reality  is is that the secret service not only protects the president of the United  States, they represent the United States of America. They were on duty. If the  facts are true as we are reading in the press, they shouldn’t have a job.”

Veteran Republican operative Roger Stone predicts, “More hookers engaged by Sen. Bob Menendez will surface shortly,” and adds this accusation: “Menendez fundraiser/donor imported hookers from Miami for Sen. Bob Menendez.” If Stone is correct, it would appear that the allegations reported by Matthew Boyle of the Daily Caller are part of a larger pattern of behavior by the New Jersey Democrat.

UPDATE II: While mocking the video interview with the prostitutes posted at the Daily Caller, Betsy Rothstein of Fishbowl DC writes:

Come on, when does a Washington sex scandal stop being entertaining? Just about never.

This is an important point: Sex scandals have a sort of intrinsic readership value that tends to negate the usual liberal bias of journalists. And the fact that Menendez is from New Jersey makes this story of interest to the always scandal-hungry New York tabloid press.
