Team Obama: ‘Ruh-Roh’

Ed Morrissey has the e-mail from the Obama campaign confessing that Romney and the RNC outraised them by $35 million in June.

Politico‘s Byron Tau calls it “a sign that the Obama campaign may continue to be outraised all the way until November.”

Before Republicans start high-fiving each other in premature celebration, however, let me remind you that the Obama campaign entered June with a cash-on-hand advantage of more than $90 million ($109 million to Romney’s $17 million). And during May, Team Obama out-spent Team Mitt by nearly $30 million ($44.6 million to Romney’s $15.6 million).

In other words, Obama began the campaign with an enormous cushion of extra cash, which enabled him to outspend Romney nearly 3-to-1 in the first month after Romney clinched the GOP nomination.

The monthly fundraising advantage for Romney in June was really just closing the gap in terms of cash-on-hand. Obama’s still got more money in the bank than Romney, and that isn’t going to change any time soon. Furthermore, Obama’s early money advantage has enabled him to beat Romney in terms of TV advertising in key swing states thus far, meaning that Romney has to dig his way out of a hole, so to speak.

Still, for the incumbent president to be on the short end of a $35 million fundraising gap is not good news for Democrats, and perhaps that explains the media panic over Romney’s Hamptons fundraiser.

Protesters! The Koch Brothers! The Hamptons! Three million dollars! The innocent reader glancing at the headlines could be forgiven for thinking that the Obama campaign is dependent on nickel-and-dime contributions from impoverished widows and orphans.

Of course, we know that Democrats have plenty of rich donors — including Hollywood stars, wealthy heiresses, Wall Street tycoons and corporate fat cats — but for some reason the mainstream media never portray this as scandalous or even particularly newsworthy. Let a Republican like Mitt Romney invite some rich people to a fundraiser in the Hamptons, however, and suddenly the headlines convey a hint of moral turpitude about the whole affair.

Has no one ever protested outside an Obama fundraiser? Why do the MSM feel obligated to turn the anti-Romney protests into headlines? Is there some kind of publicity factor involved?

[F]or some weeks, a consortium of left-wing groups including MoveOn.org, Occupy Wall Street, the Long Island Progressive Coalition, Greenpeace, Strong For All, United New York, the Teamsters Union and others have been urging their members and supporters to turn out for a protest at David Koch’s home.

What? You mean that these were not spontaneous grassroots protests, but were in fact a bunch of organized phony astroturfers? And the MSM treats these left-wing protests as authentic and legitimate news, instead of conveying the truth that this was nothing but a gigantic publicity stunt — a made-for-media photo op — staged by the Usual Suspects?

Did anyone in the MSM use the phrase “Epic Failure” to describe these transparently orchestrated protests? I think not. Nor, for that matter, could we expect anyone in the political press corps to take seriously any threat to Romney posed by criminal trespassers:

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – In a caper that seemed made for the movies, two protesters were arrested Sunday after authorities said they tried to sail across a pond to crash a tony Mitt Romney fundraiser and hit a police boat. . . .
East Hampton Village authorities said David Fink and Simon Kinsella attempted to sail across the police line, ignoring orders from East Hampton Marine Patrol, and “subsequently struck” the police boat.

It’s a “caper”! A high-spirited prank! Don’t try this at an Obama fund-raiser, of course, or the headline writers will tell a much different story:

Of course, everything done by a “right-wing extremist” is automatically scandalous, including Mitt Romney’s tax returns.

Do Not Let Spam Emails Name Your Children, Please

While not wanting to go negative on anybody’s specific choices for naming their children, on wonders: who drops the name of a country onto an unsuspecting infant’s birth certificate? Do you really want to have that conversation where you explain to little Ulysses what chemical state prompted “Lithuania” to appear in the middle name position?

On the other hand, giving your daughter some Scottish clan collision for a name like “MacDougal Campbell” might be preferable to some of the random syllable collections afoot these days, like “Trashondalawnda” or “LaTrina”.

Creativity is a beautiful thing. My contention here is that it may be better applied to things like poems and novels than birth certificates. For a healthy, long-lived child, having a name that hangs about the neck in the albatross fashion is unseemly. Take your time and pick something that affords the kid some dignity, please. Rebecca? What’s wrong with a name that has stood the test of time since the Pentateuch?
