I take a brief break from pounding my head with the Auditing review text* to mourn the departure of Don Surber from the Blogosphere. There was some confusion earlier in the week when he mentioned this on Facebook; some of us thought his account had been hacked, but eventually the hideous truth came out. Although he was having a blast doing the blogging thing, the workload of trying to maintain his regular reporter & columnist gig at the Charleston (West Virginia) Daily Mail and do the blog got to be Too Much. It’s not an uncommon thing in the blogosphere, but in this case it hit a little closer to home. I’d been reading Don’s blog since before my move down to Alexandria from Minnesota in 2007, and when I started my Career of Evil here at The Other McCain, Don was a frequent linker to Live At Five. It was a big boost to my ego to see that somebody thought my linkagery was comparable to what Lucianne Goldberg, Doug Ross and the folks at Maggie’s Farm were doing, and it was one of the things that kept me flogging the keyboard through the long months when next to nobody commented on what I was doing.
Thanks, Don. Clear skies and many top-down days to you; don’t be a stranger.

The Washington Free Beacon cites a list of fibs, fables and dubious half-truths told by the White House spokesman, and quotes what Jay Carney said today at a luncheon event:

“[W]hen I go and stand up in front of the podium, in front of the White House press corps, I never lie. I never say something that I know is not true.”

Amid a Steaming Heap of Predictable Liberal Snark, Two Important Sentences

Alex Pareene is a writer who has figured out that liberals like reading stories about how evil, stupid and nasty conservatives are. This is obviously the reason why Pareene is willing to sacrifice whatever self-respect he ever had by working for Salon.

Salon is basically the cockroach of Web ‘zines. Begun in the age of dial-up modems, it has survived the dot-com bubble, the rise of blogs and social networking, etc. While it has survived, however, no one can say that Salon has thrived. It spent a dozen years as a Slate wannabe before trying to re-invent itself as a weak imitation of HuffPo or something.

No one knows how much money Salon has lost since 1995, although it was estimated last year that its annual operating loss was $1.5 million. So, cumulative losses by now are probably somewhere between $20 million and a metric buttload.

In 2009, Salon laid off six staffers out of a total editorial staff of about 30. Its marquee bylines nowadays are the execrable Joan Walsh and the keening hysteric Glenn Greenwald. At about the time Arianna was palming off HuffPo to AOL for $315 million and Tina Brown was buying Newsweek for $1, there was some talk of selling Salon to Michael Wolff’s Newser, but negotiations reportedly broke down because nobody could figure out what Salon was worth, if anything.

Having formerly covered himself with infamy at Wonkette and Gawker, Pareene is now playing third banana to Joan and Glenn at the arguably worthless Salon, where today he piled 2,200 words of derision on top of Tucker Carlson’s head. This we might easily ignore, except for two sentences that intrigued me:

“Carlson’s Daily Caller was supposed to be a home for edgy, independent voices and serious, well-reported journalism from a conservative perspective. No one actually wants that — if they did, it would exist, right? — because the online right-wing audience simply wants to be told reassuring and outrageous lies.”

Contemptible Attorney General Found In Contempt Of Congress

Breitbart:

Republican House leaders are finally holding Attorney General Eric Holder accountable for some of his actions. Representative Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, drafted a 48-page contempt of Congress citation against him. The charge? Repeatedly obstructing and slowing the investigation of Operation Fast and Furious.
This means the top House leaders are on board. The top committee officials met for most of the day in Speaker John Boehner’s office and he gave them permission to move ahead. Finally!

Three cheers for the House GOP for getting to where they should have been, oh, months ago.

Update: Or not. That’s OK, Eric: you can rest assured that most Americans have less respect for your record than a urinal cake.

I Love The Sound Of Citizenship Arguments In The Morning–No I Don’t

Now that Mitt Romney has become the presumptive Republican nominee, there is speculation that the junior senator from Florida will be his running mate. Marco Rubio’s parents were from Cuba and did not become U.S. citizens until he was four years old. Voices from the fringe are claiming that this means Rubio is not eligible – and they’re wrong.
Marco Rubio was born is Miami, Florida. He is, therefore, a natural born citizen of the United States. Per the Constitution, the citizenship status of his parents (or grandparents or anyone but himself) is irrelevant.

Read all of Zak’s article for his usual excellent historical treatment, recalling long-forgotten facts. As far as Rubio himself goes, I haven’t heard too much about this line of argument:

  • It smacks of some of the fringier Birther arguments against #OccupyResoluteDesk.
  • It’s can’t be used against Rubio by the Left, except to try to re-inflate the Birther bubble. Come to think of it, the Left could do that as a distraction from ObamaNomics.
  • Except that they have already linked fretting about birth to raaaaacism. Given the rolling disaster that is the George Zimmerman case, I should think that throwing the Latino vote under the bus would be stupid.

Then again, what do I know? I’m one of those whackos that still thinks balancing a budget is a moral and ethical imperative.

Rock and Roll, and Other Subjects About Which Dan Collins Knows Nothing

Granted, this could be a very long post, but I just happened to notice Dan blathering on about some artsy New Wave poseurs and felt a need to point out the Neutral Objective Fact that no genuinely great rock and roll music was recorded after Sept. 25, 1980, the day John Bonham died.

How awesome was Led Zeppelin? For the most part, the lyrics were incomprehensible gibberish. More often than not, Robert Plant sang flat.

And nobody f–kin’ cared, because it was so f–kin’ awesome. Read more

Following Christ Is Not Being Pandered To By The Government

Tim Stanley:

American liberals have a schizophrenic view of God. When it comes to lifestyle issues, they think church and state should be separate. But when it comes to welfare, federal largesse morphs into Christian duty.

I disagree with Stanley. American liberals view the state as a God-like parent.

As with any parent, everybody, Left or Right, wishes to rebel, and make demands:

“I WANT A PONY”

Don't we all?
Of course, not everyone can have a pony–where would we pasture them? But the government systemically does equally absurd things, in the name of keeping the populace stuck in Peter Pan mode.

And that is the problem with anybody claiming to follow Christ and be in favor of the nanny state: if Christianity is keeping people on the milk and honey, and not graduating them to the meat and potatoes of life, then it is a false expression.
