In 2008, a 30-year-old baseball stat nerd looked at the reams of public research product churned out by the nation’s 1,500-plus daily newspapers, and concluded that, though “there is nearly as much data as there is for first basemen,” the “understanding has lagged behind.” So Nate Silver launched 538.com (named after the number of votes in the Electoral College), and through sheer intellectual rigor and superior numeracy went on to outperform all comers in the political prediction business that year. As Silver later explained in The New York Post, too often “polls are cherry-picked based on their brand name or shock value rather than their track record of accuracy,” and “demographic variables are misrepresented or misunderstood.”
Silver, who was later hired by The New York Times (a blogger-to-riches story that would have made headlines a decade ago but is no big deal nowadays), is a living refutation of the Labor Theory of Value. All those thousands of big-media reporters and commentators and pollsters, paid full time to analyze and interpret political information, got their clocks cleaned by a sports geek blowing off steam after hours.

What Would Derbyshire Say?

Jim Geraghty at National Review cites a story by Politico:

“Despite the broad changes in President Obama’s overall job approval rating since he became president, certain subgroups of the population have consistently rated him better than others, and these patterns continued in March. Blacks, Hispanics, women, 18- to 29-year-olds, Easterners, postgraduates, Americans earning less than $24,000 per year, and those who don’t regularly attend a place of worship all show higher support for Obama than their counterparts …”

What the departed Derbyshire might have said about this story is not what Jim Geraghty says. But you know he secretly thought it.

A friend reminds me that, in 2006, Derbyshire panned Ramesh Ponnuru’s book, The Party of Death. On Friday, Ponnuru was one of the first National Review staffers to denounce Derbyshire, who had also made himself obnoxious by his rather outspoken atheism.

North Dakota GOP Screws Over Santorum

I’d heard some talk about this: Evidently, the pro-Romney leadership of the North Dakota Republican Party rigged their state convention so that, despite the fact that Mitt Romney came in third in the March 6 caucuses, he got most of the delegates. The Right Scoop has this video:

The amazing thing about this is how GOP “leaders” flagrantly screw over their own rank-and-file like this — and “leaders” in the Republican Party do this all the time — and then wonder why it’s so hard to generate grassroots enthusiasm for their hand-picked candidates.

Short of tar-and-feathering the corrupt bastards, what can you do?

Too Stupid for Media Matters

In a sidebar headline at AOSHQ, I noticed a story from The Lid:

BREAKING: MJ Rosenberg OUT At Media Matters

Hmmm. Media Matters fires some guy. What’s this about?

Rosenberg’s offense was describing pro-Israel Jews as “Israel Firsters.” Which is to say, Rosenberg thinks his fellow Jews are too pro-Israel.

Let me see if I can find an appropriate analogy. My ancestors were Scots, and I am generally pro-Scotland. Now, suppose that Ireland got taken over by a bunch of dangerously violent wackjobs who insisted that every problem suffered by the Irish was the fault of those damned sneaky Scots. So the leader of the Radical Wackjob regime in Ireland demagogued almost daily against the Scots, whipping up anti-Scot sentiment amongst the Irish masses and — oh, by the way — Ireland started a kinda secretive nuclear program.

If such a scenario developed, and Scots-Americans urged the U.S. to help protect Scotland against the Irish Wackjob with nuclear ambitions, would anyone blame these “Scotland Firsters”? I think not.

Anyway, Rosenberg got canned at Media Matters and now starts a blog, and is criticizing the U.S. for opposing Iran’s nuclear program. Perhaps Rosenberg can’t figure out this simple equation:

Ahmadinejad + nukes = dead Jews

Does anyone with an IQ above room temperature believe Adhmadinejad’s nuclear program has a peaceful civilian purpose?

Look: You can criticize U.S. foreign policy all you want. But you can’t tell me that Israel’s concerns about a nuclear Iran are illegitimate. And if the U.S. can’t find some way to shut down Ahmadinejad’s nuclear program, Bibi Netanyahu will do whatever Bibi Netanyahu has to do, because the likely consequences of not doing it are too dreadful to contemplate.

What part of “never again” is so hard to understand, huh?

If Rosenberg doesn’t understand that, he deserves the distinction of being known forever as The Liberal Too Stupid to Work at Media Matters.
