ABC Iowa Debate Reaction Roundup UPDATE: Jennifer Rubin, WTF?

UPDATE 12:45 a.m.: Several people — including Melissa Clouthier, Dan Riehl, Ace of Spades and William Jacobson — were expressing outrage on Twitter at the way the Washington Post‘s Jennifer Rubin scored the debate:

Winners: Bachmann, Santorum, Perry — and because they can take steam out of Gingrich and he demonstrated a superior temperament, Romney too was a winner
Losers: Gingrich (who did himself no good and some harm) and Diane Sawyer (who sounded as if she were addressing a kindergarten class).

Rubin stands accused of being in the tank for Romney. Maybe he promised her the coveted ambassadorship to Vanuatu.

UPDATE 1:40 a.m. ET: Just checking around, trying to find anyone besides Rubin who scored this debate a loss for Gingrich and a win for Romney. No luck so far.

The Romney people are trying to spin Mitt’s $10,000 bet as something other than a gaffe. Good luck with that. And while I was looking for Santorum’s reaction to the $10,000 bet, I came across the snarky liberal Charles Pierce at Esquire:

Now, I ask you: Does a liberal have any reason to overrate Newt’s performance? I don’t think so. And therefore I think it’s safe to say that, in terms of Saturday’s front-runner showdown, Newt beat Mitt. But something else Pierce wrote caught my eye:

Hell, who knows what impact Rick Santorum’s actually made out in the hinterlands where he’s been spending his time? All bets are off, I’m thinking.

Which is exactly right: If old-fashioned retail politics means anything at all in Iowa — and informed people insist it does — Santorum should out-perform his poll numbers.

Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum promised Saturday night to “zero out” taxes on manufacturing firms, reduce burdensome regulations and to encourage the availability of affordable energy to help create more factory jobs in small towns and rural America.
“We want ‘Made in the USA’ to be the moniker for my administration,” the Pennsylvania Republican told an audience at the ABC News/Des Moines Register GOP presidential candidate debate at Drake University. . . .
Santorum also said he stands out among the candidates as a “consistent conservative” who has a proven record of success in Congress.
“I fought and won,” he said, referring to his work on welfare reform and pro-life and pro-family issues in the Senate, as well as national security issues such as sanctions on Iran.
Santorum told how he was part of the “Gang of Seven” and succeeded in implementing legislative reforms while serving in the minority in the House.
“We figured out a way to win, even though we were in the minority,” Santorum said.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Republicans threw everything they could at Newt Gingrich in a fiery debate Saturday night, increasingly desperate to stop his momentum toward the 2012 presidential nomination in the final weeks before voting starts in less than 4 weeks.
The former speaker of the House of Representatives responded with a combination of laughs and a steely determination not to let the charges go unanswered, particularly from chief rival Mitt Romney.
The spirited, two-hour debate was the first since Gingrich shot to the lead in polls in Iowa, prompting a round of challenges to his record as a Washington insider, his well-paid consulting work for the semi-federal mortgage agency Freddie Mac, his marital infidelities, and his recent statement that the Palestinians are an “invented” people.

Governor Reynolds held a manufacturing forum in Pella, because the heartland of America is suffering. During my lifetime we’ve gone from 21% of people employed in manufacturing down to 9% today. Small town America is hurting. We need a plan to revitalize manufacturing, which is why I have called for the elimination of the corporate tax on manufacturers, repealing the bevy of regulations of the Obama Administration, and lower energy costs… I will not give you a jobs number, because government doesn’t create jobs. I don’t believe you can have a top down mentality. You create the petri dish and I don’t need a government bean counter to tell me how many jobs we’re going to create.”

On Being A Consistent Conservative and Winning:
“This is not about what you say at the debate. In 1994, I was not supporting an individual mandate. I authored Medical Savings Accounts because I believe in a bottom up approach and I have never strayed. The record is important and what the question is was who is a consistent conservative. I would agree with Michele, but she’s been fighting and losing. I have been fighting and won. I won and passed Welfare Reform. I was the leader on pro-life and pro-family issues. I went out and fought on national security, and imposed sanctions on Iran. I was there in good times and in bad. I was there, I led, and I won… I was in the minority and along with Jim Nussle we formed the Gang of Seven, and we won. We exposed the House Banking scandal and sent the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee to jail. We figured out how to win, even though we were in the minority.”

On Fidelity:
“Character counts, all of your record – personal and political. I would not say it is a disqualifier, people make mistakes, and people should hold you accountable. You are electing a leader, trust is everything, particularly in this election. I hear this all the time in Iowa, who can we trust? I have been married for 21 years, I have seven children. I have been consistent and I talk about my past.”

On Israel/Palestine Dispute:
“You must speak the truth, but do so with prudence. We are in a real life situation, not an academic exercise. We need to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our ally. We need to be working with the Israeli’s, because they have the right to determine what they do with their land – and the West Bank is their land.”

On His Upbringing and Family:
“I grew up in a modest home, and I was blessed with a mom and a dad who made the little things feel like luxuries. Today we see the family breaking down. Single parent households have poverty approaching 40%. Single moms are doing heroic work, but it’s tough. We need to elevate the institution of marriage and the family. The most important luxury is a mom and a dad.”

One Bringing People Together and An Opponent:
“I listened to Newt’s (GOPAC) tapes as a young man and he laid out a vision for conservative governance. I ran in a tough environment. In 1990, I ran and won, and when I won, the Wall Street Journal called the RNC and the RNC didn’t even know my name. In 2000, I won re-election in Pennsylvania in the same year that President Bush lost by 5%, I won by 6%. I’ve run as a conservative and won, I stuck by conservative principles.”

UPDATE VI: Katie Obradovich of the Des Moines Register:

Paul had a particularly good debate, although he probably won’t get much credit for it from the national media. It’s hard to fathom why he’s not more of a target – -he’s running second in the polls of Iowa caucusgoers. He’s running an attack ad against Gingrich and repeated his claims the former speaker is a hypocrite. Yet, both Perry and Romney praised Paul when asked what they’ve learned from other candidates during this race.

Watching Navy ensure that Army’s timepiece has immaculate works with The World’s Youngest Blogger

(i.e. Army’s clock was cleaned, 27-21, for the 10th straight year, ouch), a few things stuck out:

  • #OccupyResoluteDesk was there, in close proximity to a Navy Jack held by a couple of Mids. That’s likely closer than BHO has been to any Gadsden flag held by Tea Partiers. Yet the exceptional American spirit in the traditional Navy Jack is the very same. Own it!
  • Ten years? Ouch! I thought it was going to be a big deal when Navy was the first to 50 victories in the series.
  • This game in particular, and college sports in general, are more fun, due to the lack of financial incentives for the players. I can hardly bear watching the overpaid prima donnas of the NFL. Copious exceptions to that generalization exist, yet there it is.
  • Sadly, Steve Burri’s PhotoShop skills don’t extend to pasting a winning team on the field for Army.

The World’s Youngest Blogger, at 4.5 months, is teaching me a lot about life. Also: teething, amidst loud, angry shrieks. Especially when he is feeding.

This struck me as a metaphor for the country. Hunger, for food or success, is a phenomenal motivator, no matter how old you are. Yet Progressivism has reduced Americans to an infantile state, via entitlements, that swaddle the teeth like gums in their hatred of competition and capitalism. The #Occupiers are probably the nadir of this devolution to infantilism. So you’re starving, and you really need to eat something, but restoring proper dental facilities means PAIN! Progressivism wants to weaken people to the point that the Nanny State feeding tube is all that will keep them ‘fairly’ alive.

Teething our way through the gummed up entitlement mess is going to hurt. We’re hungry, though. Hungry for liberty, for the chance to have effort receive just reward. And yet these Progressives are going to continue to fear-monger, demagogue the 1%, slaughter legions of strawmen, systemically queer the economic data, and drive generational warfare, rather than just let the country go through a natural process of teething, and move on to adult food.

The worst aspect of Progressivism is paying for the slippery slope to economic feebleness involves taking money from those not yet born. The American Revolution was, inter alia, driven by a hatred of taxation without representation. The 18th century case was more about the distance from London to North America. As our Federal government has taken on the odiousness of the 18th century English Parliament, DC has taken to stealing across time from persons unborn.

Just remember: such stunts are only bad when conservatives do it.

BOOM! Hot Gay Mess Suddenly Explodes Over Rick Perry’s Iowa Campaign Ad

Welcome to the point in the campaign when the copy desk starts using words like “embattled” in headlines on stories that include phrases like “mired in controversy” about the “struggling” candidate:

Backlash over a TV ad by Texas Gov. Rick Perry has exploded into public accusations and recriminations, with the leader of a gay Republican group declaring that a longtime GOP pollster is secretly homosexual. . . .
There were reports that some of Perry’s campaign staff — including pollster Tony Fabrizio — opposed the ad’s message. Jimmy LaSalvia, co-founder of the gay Republican group GOProud, gave an interview to the Huffington Post and published Twitter messages in which he used a slur to identify Fabrizio as homosexual.  GOProud subsequently issued a statement declaring: “Rick Perry should be embarrassed and the people around him who are the architects of this strategy, particularly people like Tony Fabrizio, should be ashamed.” . . .

Read the rest of that story — a fine specimen of Neutral Objective Journalism — and ask yourself: What is the obvious consequence of this?

Yeah: Perry’s toast in Iowa. Because as Jazz Shaw notes, Tony Fabrizio’s secret wasn’t really much of a secret:

Tony was apparently actively involved in Outgiving, a strong supporter of LGBT causes, and also did a lot of work for the Log Cabin Republicans.

Imagine how that’s going to play in Sioux City.

On the one hand, Perry can fire Fabrizio and look like a hateful bigot. On the other hand, he can keep Fabrizio and lose the crucial “hateful bigot” vote in Iowa that this TV ad was intended to win over:

He’s trapped, with no good options, and you have to wonder whether Perry will be asked about this “mired in controversy” angle during tonight’s “pivotal” debate. If such a question is asked, of course, there’s no need to wonder what Perry will do: He’ll make a complete fool of himself again.

Ace of Spades didn’t mention the likely political fallout:

I’m tired of Stalinists and blackmailers, personally  But if GOProud’s sick of “faggots,” that’s their deal.

Ace did, however, mention that Andrew Breitbart resigned from the GOProud board. That’s going to pour a few gallons of highly flammable publicity on the sparks of what is destined to become known as the “Perry Campaign Gay Scandal,” which will almost certainly burn down what’s left of Perry’s poll numbers in Iowa.

Imagine what they’ll be saying Monday on Morning Joe. Imagine what Lawrence O’Donnell and Rachel Maddow will do with this story. Imagine how the entire NY/DC liberal media establishment will hop on this story and ride it all week long. It doesn’t take too much imagination, does it? And so now we ask . . .

Cui bono?

That’s Italian. Maybe you can ask an Italian guy what it means.

Rick Santorum Will Score Upset Win in Tonight’s ‘Pivotal’ ABC Debate in Iowa

That’s not the headline on the ABC News story, of course:

Only three weeks from the Iowa caucuses, the top Republican candidates will square off tonight at a pivotal debate in the state capital. The debate, hosted by ABC News and moderated by Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos, starts at 9pm ET, live from Drake University.
The prime-time debate comes as the GOP race has started to reach a boiling point. With Newt Gingrich surging to the top of the pack, former front-runner Mitt Romney has launched scathing attacks from all sides, from his key surrogates to a political action committee that, while not affiliated with the campaign, is funded by many Romney donors.

We should recognize this as what it is: Hype, of the same sort of stuff Hunter S. Thompson used to write when he was moonlighting as a publicist for a Florida wrestling promoter:

“The entire Fort Walton Beach police force is gripped in a state of fear this week; all leaves have been cancelled and Chief Bloor is said to be drilling his men for an Emergency Alert situation on Friday and Saturday night — because those are the nights when ‘Kazika, The Mad Jap,’ a 440-pound sadist from the vile slums of Hiroshima, is scheduled to make his first — and no doubt his last — appearance in Fish-head Auditorium. Local wrestling impressario Lionel Olay is known to have spoken privately with Chief Bloor, urging him to have ‘every available officer’ on duty at ringside this weekend, because of the Mad Jap’s legendary temper and his invariably savage reaction to racial insults. Last week, in Detroit, Kazika ran amok and tore the spleens out of three spectators, one of whom allegedly called him a ‘yellow devil’ . . .”

The TV network publicists want to hype up this “pivotal” debate as a cage match between Newt and Mitt, so that viewers tune in to see these two Mad Jap stranglers go at one another. The multimillionaire ABC celebrity superstar anchors Diane and George want to burnish their reputations as Important Journalists by presiding over an event of historic consequence and, for that very reason, Rick Santorum might finally catch a break.

What better “news” for ABC than to have their cage-match debate destroy both of the Mad Jap stranglers? And what better dramatic turn in the saga of Campaign 2012 than for the upset winner to be the scrappy underdog now polling in single digits? Can’t you just hear Diane and George in the post-debate analysis segment, “I was surprisingly impressed with Rick Santorum”?

This is predictable, you see. It’s about the narrative arc, because TV news is show business, and show business requires a story that captures the public imagination. The people who run TV news are, to a greater extent than most viewers understand, deliberately controlling the story, deciding what is and is not “news.”

Our perceptions are being manipulated by these people, as I argued last month in my American Spectator column, “Debating the Deciders”:

During the third debate — Aug. 11 in Ames, Iowa, televised by Fox — the moderators clearly were trying to incite clashes between Bachmann and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who both were going all-out to win that week’s Iowa Republican Party straw poll. Pawlenty came out the loser in both the Thursday debate and the Saturday straw poll, and by Sunday quit the race. Meanwhile, the race had been transformed by the entrance of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who quickly rose to become the front-runner. Perry seemed an unstoppable juggernaut until his performance in three June debates derailed his bandwagon. While most of Perry’s debate damage resulted from self-inflicted wounds, this is not to say that the manipulations of moderators were without effect. Howard Kurtz watched as the Fox News team planned for the Sept. 22 debate in Orlando, Florida, aiming to “get some fireworks going,” as Fox managing editor Bill Sammon put it.

Political bias isn’t the only bias of which news media are guilty, although they’re guilty as hell of that. Even those in the media who are conservative tend to have their own prejudices, including the prejudice for inciting “fireworks” in debates — and beating other networks.

That’s why I’ve got a gut hunch about tonight’s debate: The ABC moderators aren’t willing to let Fox News play the “pivotal” role with the Dec. 15 debate. If this race is going to pivot, by God, Diane and George will do the pivoting. I’ve called Santorum a “brutal counter-puncher” in debates (he got some heavy body blows in on Perry during that Orlando debate), and if my hunch is right, the ABC moderators will let him use those skills. Here’s what to look for: Controversial “gotcha” question to either Mitt or Newt and then, after they’ve attempted to evade the question, the moderators call on Santorum to respond, at which point he hammers on the front-runner, who then gets 30 seconds to respond and this back-and-forth then turns into a shouting match — “fireworks!” — with the two candidates interrupting each other.

Let’s face it: The media view Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann as yesterday’s news. Wouldn’t they relish their role as Deciders and Gatekeepers in picking Santorum as the new “Flavor of the Month”?

Should this happen — and it’s just a gut hunch, so I can’t guarantee it will happen — those of my readers who don’t like Santorum are going to be screaming bloody murder about these liberal network celebrities deliberately maniupulating the GOP presidential race. And my response will be, “You just now noticed this? They’ve been doing it all year, and it took you 12 months to catch onto it?”

The problem with some people is that they’re insufficiently cynical. No matter how many times they get played for suckers, they’re still suckers. And the carnies who run TV news have a professional obligation never to give a sucker an even break.

#OccupyDC Provides Shenanigans At U.S. Chamber Of Commerce Christmas Party, Patrick Murray Non-Plussed

Keith Olbermann lives! The story picks up at 5:13 into the clip. #Occupy protesters (the ‘99%’) laid on the ground and covered themselves in a red carpet for the people leaving the Christmas party (the ‘1%’) to walk all over:
In attendance was retired Army Colonel Patrick Murray, who sent the following email:

Last night I had the honor of attending the annual U.S. Chamber of Commerce Christmas party. Walking up, we were accosted by an angry, snarling mob of protesters, courtesy of labor unions like the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and some of the “Occupy” rabble. All of them were screaming the now stale “Pay your fair share,” and “You walk on our rights, now walk on us” (daring us to step on protesters lying underneath a red carpet painted with “99 %”). As we waded through the rabble, I stopped to soak it all in, whereupon the protesters speculated about my heritage as well as offering some recommendations that I’m pretty sure are anatomically impossible.

I spent 24 years serving my country in the Army and defending the Constitution (or as Jim Moran calls it: “meaningless”). That includes our 1st Amendment rights of freedom of speech and to peaceably assemble. But what I witnessed last night was chilling, because these aren’t the first such protests I’ve witnessed, albeit in faraway lands.

While serving in places like Belgrade, Moscow and Minsk, places that had strong Socialist movements and totalitarian regimes, I encountered the exact same thing, often in front of the American Embassy where I worked. The slogans and the signs were in different languages, but the methodology was the same (in the aforementioned locations, the AstroTurf mobs arrived in busses; SEIU just happens to have mountains of cash from taxpayers and forced union dues that they can fly their mobs in). But the Socialist, anti-American undercurrents were eerily similar, such that standing there last night I suddenly got an odd sense of deja vu. It was like I was back in a totalitarian state, except that I wasn’t. Instead, I was standing on H Street NW, right in the heart of our Nation’s Capital.

The more I think about it, the more disturbing it becomes. First, consider the inanity of supposedly jobless people out protesting against the Chamber of Commerce, a stellar organization that exists to create jobs and support small business. It’s also troubling that the protests here mirror those I’ve seen in remote places where there is no culture of individual freedoms or the concept of private ownership, much less representative government. But most troubling is that the goals of the anti-American mobs are shared by the leaders of the current Democrat Party. Massive income redistribution and ever-higher taxes to feed an enormous federal nanny state from which all blessings flow is the utopia of Jim Moran, Tim Kaine, Nancy Pelosi our current president. All wrapped up in the innocuous, poll-tested jingle of “pay your fair share.”

Worth dying for?

Authorities have filed homicide charges against a woman after she allegedly administered a silicone injection into the penis of a 22-year-old man, who suffered a fatal blood clot.
The victim, who died in May, had been seeking a penis enhancement, authorities said today.
Kasia Rivera, 34, of East Orange, was arrested today on manslaughter charges and unauthorized practice of medicine in the death of Justin Street, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Probably not what he expected on his tombstone:

“Justin Street, 1989-2011: He Thought His Penis Was Too Small.”

On the other hand, at least Justin wasn’t expecting the government to provide him with . . . uh, stimulus:

According to data collected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Medicare has spent more than $240 million of taxpayer money on penis pumps for elderly men over the past decade, and will surpass a quarter of a billion dollars this year for costs since 2001.
The cost to taxpayers for the pumps more than quadrupled during that period, from a low of $11 million in 2001 to a high of more than $47 million in 2010. And these represent only the costs for external devices, technically classified as “Male Vacuum Erection Systems,” not implantable devices or oral drugs such as Viagra.

Hasn’t this whole “pursuit of happiness” gotten completely out of hand? Is it really the responsibility of U.S. taxpayers to provide penis pumps and Viagra for geezers who can’t get it up? And apparently this kind of sexual welfare is not even limited to American geezers:

A Minnesota town is outraged over reports that an illegal immigrant was  implanted with a penis pump – paid for by taxpayers… Scott County Attorney Pat Ciliberto wants to know how an illegal  immigrant was able to obtain tens of thousands of dollars in medical  assistance.

This insanity must be stopped. America needs someone who will stand up and speak out  — a man of courage and conviction, a genuine leader with firm principles and clear vision to put an end to these abuses.
