A One-Way Ticket to Des Moines …

. . . would cost $249 if I booked today for an Aug. 3 departure from Reagan National in D.C.

You may ask, “Why Iowa? Why Aug. 3? Why a one-way ticket?” Here’s the story at The American Spectator:

Atlanta businessman Herman Cain will begin a nine-day bus tour of Iowa next week, leading up to the Aug. 11 Republican presidential debate hosted by Fox News and the Aug. 13 Ames Straw Poll. . . .

The “Common Sense Solutions” bus tour kicks off Aug. 4 in Des Moines. I’m thinking of booking a one-way flight because it’s my first trip to Iowa and, while I’ll be following Cain’s bus tour across the Hawkeye State, I also want to catch up with as many of the other candidates as I can before the straw poll.

My general idea is to get a solid on-the-ground perspective of the political landscape in Iowa, to talk to organizers, activists and operatives, developing sources so that all I have to do — as we move ahead toward the February 2012 GOP caucuses — is make a few phone calls to get the straight lowdown. Wishful Thinking On The Left

William over at Alan Colmes’ joint has a magic chart culled from Think Progress that shows Tea Party activity is down in 2011. From Think Progress:

This study only looked at events organized by Americans for Prosperity or Tea Party Patriots and their affiliates — other Tea Party groups’ event numbers were not readily available. The two groups, however, serve as complimentary proxies for the overall movement.

Meanwhile, via Director Blue, we have a Ushanka post about Tea Partiers rallying outside of Speaker Boehner’s office.
My excuse for less activism this year is that I’ve been ‘cooling’ my heels in Afghanistan. I figure the bulk of the the fellow Right Wing Extremists out there have been (a) engaging in other forms of activism than holding rallies, and (b) girding their loins for 2012 which is when we absolutely have to ‘bring it’.
What say ye?

Update: Tea Party DC is awaiting a permit for a 27 July rally, noon to 1PM. I’m going to plead the fact that I’m writing this from the Labor and Delivery ward of the hospital. Dunno when the World’s Youngest Blogger is going to arrive, but his early commitment to McCainism (the systematic refusal to adhere to a schedule) is strangely admirable.

Zilla Wins the Internet

Over the weekend I did a post about Zilla’s fundraiser to avert doom. Thanks to your help, doom was averted and now — shades of Russ Emerson — Zilla is under assault by the sub-humans at Democrat Underground who call her (among much else) “a far-right racist . . . bigotbot who ran smear campaigns against John Hall.”

Zilla is a Tea Party activist who helped Republican Nan Hayworth defeat that pinko swine John Hall by a 53-47% margin in NY-19.

My buddy Chris Cassone is from NY-19 and he could recite for you chapter and verse of why Hall is a despicable commie. To call John Hall a stinking pile of excrement would be an insult to perfectly useful fertilizer, and whatever Zilla did to help defeat Hall, she was doing the Lord’s work. So for her to be under attack by the demented denizens of DUmbville is a high honor indeed.

Go hit Zilla’s tip jar — maybe she can buy some disinfectant to help wipe the toxic taint of those troll DUmmies off her blog.

Which is to say, it’s a pathetic joke:

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs’ pronouncement today that Libya is a “stalemate” would, I think, have gotten a bit more attention but for the debt debate.

We recently passed the four-month anniversary of “Operation Odyssey Dawn,” the U.S.-led air assault on Moammar Qaddafi’s regime. Now, 128 days later, we’ve got a “stalemate.”

Just as they don’t teach economics at Harvard Law, I guess they don’t teach military history there, either. So we pissed away hundreds of billions in neo-Keynesian “stimulus” spending without creating a recovery, and now we’ve wasted hundreds of millions in bombs and missiles without defeating the enemy — who, it’s worth pointing out, posed no threat to the U.S. or its allies.

You know who’s smiling now? Jimmy Carter.

Because Jimmy’s well on his way to becoming the second-worst president in American history.

The World’s Least Plausible Reality Show continues:

Mr Obama will address the nation tonight at 9pm Eastern Time and U.S. leaders are trying to reassure jittery investors as Wall Street markets closed down and global indexes wobbled today.

Jeebus, this guy doesn’t know when to quit, does he?

On the bright side, Black Monday was merely dark gray. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was only off 88 points.

You know why the markets aren’t in complete panic over Obama’s reckless debt-ceiling brinksmanship? Because they don’t take it any more seriously than I do. It’s so transparently a phony political kabuki dance — a show-bizzy publicity stunt whereby Obama depicts himself as the Only Adult in the Room — that investors simply can’t believe anyone could be that stupid.

So once again, Obama will interrupt whatever it was that TV viewers had planned to watch in the prime 9 p.m. slot, so that he can recycle his irreponsible partisan rhetoric about what a reponsible non-partisan he is. And then there is the comic-villain clown of this absurd melodrama:

Excuse me while I check the schedule . . . yeah, at 8 p.m. ET, Turner Classic Movies will be showing I Accuse! (1958), the true story of Emile Zola’s defense of Alfred Dreyfus.

Can’t miss that. At least it’s a true story.
