Alex Pareene, Bigot

Posted on | April 25, 2011 | 35 Comments

Tennessee state Sen. Stacey Campfield has pushed through committee a bill that would prohibit public schools from teaching about homosexuality prior to ninth grade. This inspires Pareene — employed as a professional journalist by Salon — to write as if he were a fanatical activist auditioning for a front-page gig at DailyKos:

The numskulls and bigots elected to various state legislatures in the last election will be, like Bush and Reagan’s many judges, the longest-lasting and probably most damaging consequence of the recent Republican resurgence. Because in state governments, where the national press seldom ventures, where local newspapers are operating with tiny staffs and shrinking readerships, and where local TV news is largely useless, these morons are basically able to pass any fool idea lobbyists and far-right think tanks can cook up — and there is an entire cottage industry devoted to cooking up awful ideas for Republican state legislatures to pass. (Bills like Arizona’s immigration crackdown do not spring fully formed from the minds of cretinous state senators.)

So in a single paragraph, Pareene describes Republicans as numbskulls, bigots, morons and cretins. We get it, OK? Alex Pareene hates him some Republicans.

And loves him some gayness.

Let me pause to ask adults who might be reading this: Do you recall any of your teachers ever addressing the topic of homosexuality in class? Because I sure don’t. I could name at least three guys I went to high school with who were gay, but cannot once remember our teachers discussing homosexuality in class. As a matter of fact, I don’t remember any classroom discussion of sex at all, except perhaps the basics of reproduction in biology class. How is it that people managed to figure out sex before schools started lecturing kids about it? But I digress . . .

Alex Pareene decided to close out his Salon screed thus:

In addition to banning the nonexistent practice of teachers indoctrinating children with homosexual propaganda, the bill will also presumably stop potential anti-bullying lessons and campaigns. Or, at least, it will preclude any anti-bullying talk that mentions sexual orientation or anti-gay language.
Why a man named Stacey would want to make it more difficult to help children who are victims of homophobic bullying is beyond me.

Did you see that? Pareene, while posturing as an advocate of enlightened tolerence, just gay-baited a guy for being named “Stacey.”

UPDATE: Linked by Little Miss Attila — who for some reason always feels as if I’m in need of a lecture — and welcome, Instapundit readers!

UPDATE II: Alexander Cohen (ArcLights) in the comments below:

Of course, the pro-gay left seems not to realize that categorizing straight boys accused of being gay with actual gay boys is endorsing a key part of the bullies’ message and thus doing at least as much to deepen the victims’ wounds as to heal them.

Very good point. The real problem is the barbaric idea that masculinity must defined by brutality and physical dominance. Of course, children are natural-born barbarians and, without strong adult supervision, will degenerate to this kind of “Lord of the Flies” savagery.

You’d have a lot less bullying in schools if you (a) had more men teachers and (b) re-instituted corporal punishment. Paddling, or at least the threat of paddling, did much to restrain bullies in the old days.

Where I come from, “faggot” was just an insult, a synonym for “someone who won’t kick my ass for calling him a faggot.” As Cohen says, the gay left is purposefully blurring the line between that kind of childish taunting and actual violence against people on the basis of sexuality. Introducing school children to lectures about sexuality is unlikely to deter bullies from either.

Allen West: Not Just Yes, But Hell, Yes!

Tanya Somanander at Think Progress believes that criticizing feminism is “blatant misogyny,” but I think most Americans will agree 100% with Allen West:

We need you to come in and lock shields, and strengthen up the men who are going to the fight for you. To let these other women know on the other side — these planned Parenthood women, the Code Pink women, and all of these women that have been neutering American men and bringing us to the point of this incredible weakness — to let them know that we are not going to have our men become subservient. That’s what we need you to do.

The third annual National Offend a Feminist Week begins May 2, y’know, and now the colonel has given us some splendid inspiration.

Herman Cain Campaign Gets Boost as Haley Barbour Quits GOP 2012 Field

Posted on | April 25, 2011 | 16 Comments

Of course, that’s not the angle the biased liberal media is reporting, but what do you expect from CNN?

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said Monday he will not run for president in 2012.
“I will not be a candidate for president next year,” Barbour, a Republican, said in a statement. “This has been a difficult, personal decision, and I am very grateful to my family for their total support of my going forward, had that been what I decided.”
Barbour, the former chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association, said he would continue serving as governor of Mississippi and work to “elect a new Republican president in 2012.”
Although he is popular among Washington insiders, he has had trouble gaining traction in recent national polls.

(Via Riehl World View and Cubachi.) So we see that popularity with insiders doesn’t count for much, nor did Barbour’s reputation as a brilliant policy guy or a top fundraiser. Barbour’s dropout means that there are now just two Southerners remaining in the 2012 Republican presidential field: former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Georgia businessman Herman Cain.

The constant refrain of those who have resisted Cain’s gathering grassroots momentum is, “Oh, I like Herman, but he can’t really win.” People who say that are paying attention to the wrong things.

Cain has already visited Iowa 15 times in the past year, usually meeting with small groups of conservative activists. Read more

The Case of the Missing Young Blonde

Posted on | April 25, 2011 | 7 Comments

Twenty-year-old Holly Bobo is missing, believed to have been abducted April 13 from her family’s home in rural Decatur County, Tennessee:

Police say they believe the alleged abductor may be from the area and possibly acquainted with Bobo and her family. The kidnapper is described as a white man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds.

Bobo is 5-foot-3 and 110 pounds. She is the cousin of country singer Whitney Duncan. There is an $80,000 reward in the case. Here’s a Fox News report on the latest development in the case:

Of course, this is a terrible ordeal for the Bobo family, their friends and the entire community. From the perspective of media criticism, there is a distinct phenomenon in such cases: Crimes against attractive young women and girls tend to get far more TV coverage than do similar crimes when perpetrated against less attractive victims.

You saw this phenomenon, for example, in the Jon Benet Ramsey case and the Natalee Holloway case. Other than the fact that the victims were young pretty females, how were those crimes different — more unusual or newsworthy — than hundreds of other crimes committed every year? Old people, ugly people, fat people, men and boys: Hundreds of such people fall victim to foul play every year, and yet their fates never become fodder for national TV news in the way that crimes against attractive young females do.

More than anything else, this reflects two basic facts:

  1. Television is a visual medium, which favors very attractive people as subjects.
  2. Female victims naturally evoke more sympathy, because of their presumed greater vulnerability.

Reporting on The Case of the Missing Young Blonde is good for TV ratings and television news is a business — an extremely cynical business, at that. This does not diminish the horror experienced by the friends, families and neighbors of Holly Bobo, but it does explain why her disappearance is treated as national news, while so many other crime victims are never noticed by the networks.

Why Aren’t You Homeschooling Yet?

Posted on | April 25, 2011 | 13 Comments

Steve Foley at Minority Report describes this video, recorded at last month’s Left Forum in New York City:

Sarah Knopp, a Los Angeles teachers union leader (in the Tax the Rich shirt) and Megan Behrent a New York City teacher affiliated with the International Socialist Organization, explain how to push Marxism in the public school classroom.

This panel discussion, entitled “Capitalism and Education: A Marxist Discourse on What We’re Fighting Against and What We’re Fighting For,” was sponsored by the magazine International Socialist Review. (I’ve screencapped this from their Facebook page.)

Notice that participants in this panel included two public university professors who train teachers: Jean Anyon of City University of New York and Jeff Bale of Michigan State University.

Parents who continue sending their children to public schools government indoctrination centers always react to revelations like this by saying, “Oh, that kind of stuff isn’t happening in our school. We live in a good district!”

To such parents, I ask: Do you think people like Sarah Knopp and Megan Behrent only teach in bad school districts? How many more socialist teachers like Knopp and Behrent are there in America? And do you think they advertise their beliefs to the parents in their districts?

Cokie Roberts Must Be Telepathic

by Smitty (via Right Wing Video)

After there is a liberation of talk shows, there needs to be a rule: sweeping, idiotic generalizations must be met with a pie in the face. Sure, these intellectual shortcuts are easy to throw out there, we can all flail ourselves. But let’s work to cut it out. I’m not certain all Lefties are as reprehensible as Cokie here, attacking ‘People’ for calling President Obama Muslim because they can’t say ‘I Don’t Like Him Cause He’s Black’. No one’s heart is truly knowable to less than the Almighty; the protestations of Christianity have to be taken at face value. Nor does the President’s train wreck record have anything to do with the genetics of the case: the record draws 32 feet of static head on its own (i.e., it sucks like hard vacuum).
So, get stuffed, Cokie: your statement tells us nothing except you’re handy with cheap rhetorical devices.

NATO Hits Qaddafi Compound

Posted on | April 25, 2011 | 2 Comments

NATO bombers hit Qaddafi’s headquarters compound near Tripoli. Here’s an al-Jazeera video report:

Meanwhile, on the fighting front at Ajdabiya, the big news today is that the rebels are listening to anti-Qaddafi rap music.  Which is a poor substitute for actual news, but I guess the Associated Press is more interested in happy-face feature stories than reporting how the war is going. Damn sad thing when you can get more news from al-Jazeera than from the Associated Press . . .
