Good-Bye, Holiday Traffic Suckage Season, Hello Happy New Year!
Posted on | December 31, 2010 | 12 Comments
On Nov. 25, I warned that Thanksgiving marks the onset of Holiday Traffic Suckage Season, when traffic to blogs plummets. Although this dread season in the blogospheric calendar doesn’t officially end until Monday — when people are once more stuck back in their office cubicles, pretending to work while surfing the ‘Net — yet the end of December allows us to assess how well we survived the past month:
Amazing isn’t it? Despite all odds, December was actually the best traffic month of the year — more than 260,000 hits — completing our first year since Smitty switched us over from the old Blogspot address to our plush new custom WordPress site.
Thanks to everyone who made possible this most excellent finish to a most wonderful year, which began with Alabama winning the national championship in the Rose Bowl, continued with Scott Brown winning the Massachusetts Miracle and reached its peak on Election Day, when Republicans won their biggest congressional victory in more than 60 years. And this was the year I got Tweeted by Alyssa Milano!
The year ahead will involve political battles in Washington and the gradual build-up toward the 2012 presidential campaign. We’re just two weeks away from the Republican National Committee meeting in D.C., followed a month later by CPAC (Da Tech Guy’s already booked his CPAC trip). You can expect me to be rattling the tip jar for trips like that, and also to travel to Iowa, New Hampshire and other key primary states.
It’s gonna be another great year.
Good-bye, 2010, and Happy New Year to everyone!
UPDATE: Happy New Year, Professor Reynolds!
OMFG: Katy Couric Says, ‘Maybe We Need a Muslim Version of ‘The Cosby Show’
Posted on | December 31, 2010 | 66 Comments
Yes, she really said that. When I heard the audio Steve Foley posted at the Minority Report, I could scarcely believe it. How could anyone — even Katie Couric — be so incredibly stupid as to say this aloud?
“Maybe we need a Muslim version of ‘The Cosby Show.’ . . . I know it sounds crazy, but ‘The Cosby Show’ did so much to change attitudes about African-Americans in this country and I think sometimes people are afraid of things they don’t understand.”
Of the many layers of stupid in Couric’s comment, the first that comes to mind is this: Is the real problem America’s attitudes toward Muslims, or rather is the real problem Muslims’ attitude toward America?
But I’m sure the commenters will be able to point out many other nuances of stupidity here. Meanwhile, go to The Minority Report and listen to the whole two-minute audio clip.
Via Memeorandum, there’s more from Mediaite, Michelle Malkin, The Right Scoop, Gateway Pundit, Scared Monkeys, Ed Driscoll and Weasel Zippers
UPDATE: OK, let’s peel back another layer or two of Katie Couric’s onion of stupidity. Could her analogy of (a) black Americans circa 1984 and (b) Muslims in 2010 possibly be more insultingly unfair to black people? Read more
Why Do Public Schools Exist?
Because You Hate Your Children
Posted on | December 31, 2010 | 10 Comments
“Is a mediocre education worth risking the parent-child relationship? Not when home-schooled children typically out-perform their public school counterparts by 30-37 percentile points across the board. Socializing all day . . . is apparently not the most sensible way to nurture or instruct a child.”

VIDEO: Dueling A**holes
Posted on | December 31, 2010 | 45 Comments
OK, everybody knows there’s no love lost between me and Barrett Brown. But even I must admit that the boy has just entered the realm of YouTube legend.
The setup: Brown’s bohemian lifestyle is getting on the nerves of his girlfriend’s roommate, a guy who has a real job as a Web designer and is angry about being kept awake all hours of the night after a visit from Brown. Roommate says “I don’t want f***ing any old bro” visiting the apartment and is worried that Brown is “casing the f***ing joint.”
Best line: Brown’s reply when the angry roommate asks, “Wait — you’re going to call me a f***ing faggot?” (About 3:50.)
WARNING: Extremely NSFW language.
Is this video a shameful and arguably illegal violation of the roommate’s privacy? Yes. Is the roommate’s anger probably justified? Yes. Is this video likely to be taken off YouTube very soon due to terms-of-service complaints? Yes.
So enjoy the awesomeness while you still can. Barrett Brown could become the next Antoine Dodson.
UPDATE: Kind of a lively discussion in the comments. Keep this in mind next time someone tries to tell you that I’m crude and obnoxious. Compared to Barrett Brown, I’m Felix Unger.
UPDATE II: Donald Douglas posts the sequel video, in which Brown’s girlfriend’s roommate whines that she’s not respecting his boundaries — and therefore, he’s moving out at the first of the month.
These guys need to move to Hollywood and get a development deal for an MTV series, Douchebag Roommate.
Have They Blamed Global Warming Yet?
Posted on | December 31, 2010 | 5 Comments
Late last night this headline moved via the Drudge Tweet:
Rare hurricane-strength winds batter
L.A. area; more snow and ice on way
Rather than post it last night, I forward-scheduled it for this morning. If the passage of 10 hours isn’t enough time for liberals to blame this on “climate change,” I’ll be shocked.
Global warming is like a meterological Swiss Army knife: If it rains, global warming. If it doesn’t rain, global warming. If Miami, Florida, has its coldest winter ever and Great Britain has its coldest winter in a thousand years — that’s right, global warming.
There is no atmospheric phenomenon that can’t be explained by this one-size-fits-all theory, which is therefore non-falsifiable. For liberals, global warming is to weather what “aggregate demand” is to economics.
My 2011 Prediction
Posted on | December 31, 2010 | 5 Comments
This is the time of year when people do “Year in Review” roundups and make predictions for the coming year. Some people do those “Top 10”-style lists, but the work-to-reward ratio on that stuff is way too high for me. If I wanted to work that hard, I wouldn’t be a blogger. So I decided to do exactly one 2011 prediction — and it’s a bold prophecy:
The postive feedback on Twitter provided overwhelming evidence that, once again, I’d tapped into the zeitgeist:
“Why don’t they have salsa on the table?” — it’s a blog about nothing!
