New Kinds of Crazy

When good old-fashioned lunacy seems a trifle boring — if traditional psychosis is just a tad on too ordinary for your taste — why not try a genuinely innovative form of insanity?
On the morning of April 13, a foul odor brought police to Apartment B.
It appeared that Gauthier had been the first to die, followed by her daughter, then Boli-Gbagra.
Investigators believe the deaths may have been spaced out over nearly two months.
Among the items found in the sparsely furnished apartment: several French magazines and books — including Let’s Welcome the Extraterrestrials and Yes to Human Cloning — connected with the Raelian movement. . . .
Read the whole thing. It’s truly weird. Thanks to Soylent Green, who compares it to global warming.
Schadenfreude

After nearly two weeks of introspection, President Obama’s top advisers have concluded that the “shellacking” Democrats took on Election Day was caused in large part by their own failure to live up to expectations set during the 2008 campaign, not merely the typical political cycles and poor messaging they pointed to at first.
While the president has been on a trip to Asia for the past 10 days, all but a few of his top aides stayed behind to figure out what went so wrong and what to do about it. Wearing casual clothes and with the White House to themselves, they determined that the situation they face is serious and will take significant adjustments to reverse. . . .
The only thing that keeps this from being unmitigated joy for me is my knowledge that these “top advisers” moping around the White House are getting paid fat salaries at taxpayer expense.
What Causes Islamophobia
Posted on | November 15, 2010 | 19 Comments
Stuff like this:
Make no mistake: The reason that 3-year-old Mandy Simon had to be searched by TSA is Islam — and the politically-correct insistence that, in Ed Morrissey’s phrase, “everyone must suffer equally” in airport security.
UPDATE: Jeffrey Goldberg informs us that Nov. 24 is “National Opt-Out Day,” and urges people to (a) refuse the full-body scans and (b) fly “commando.”

‘Aggregate Demand,’ Again
Posted on | November 15, 2010 | 1 Comment
What is it with this neo-Keynesian stuff? Back in July, Brad DeLong did his little paean to “aggregate demand.” At least DeLong is an economist. Matthew Yglesias, not so much:
So if for whatever reason businessmen or politicians or media figures or anyone else feels more comfortable expressing the situation as one caused by “uncertainty” that’s fine. But the name of the game is still fiscal and monetary expansion. But instead the proposed cure typically seems to be “shift public policy in a more rightwing direction.” That wouldn’t do anything about uncertainty or a shortfall in aggregate demand. It’s just a faux-sophisticated way of saying “I’m a rich businessman who wants politicians to cater to my interests more.”
Yglesias knows all about “faux-sophisticated” ways of saying things. What he doesn’t know is economics.
What’s the Very Best Thing About Republicans Winning the Election?
Posted on | November 14, 2010 | 6 Comments
Britney’s got a new boyfriend. No, that’s not the best thing about the election. The best thing about the election is, now that Republicans have won a solid majority in the House of Representatives, it feels safe to blog about silly stuff like Britney Spears again.
For months, the approach of Nov. 2 seemed like such a do-or-die moment that the entire right-wing blogosphere was totally game faces, until we were on the verge of turning into Read more
Kill the Rich!
Posted on | November 14, 2010 | 17 Comments
Frank Rich, I mean. Three weeks ago, I spent an hour or so debunking his claim that Obama cut your taxes. Being quite proud of the result, I immediately e-mailed it to Instapundit and . . . no linky-love.
So after about four or five hours, I e-mailed him again: “I don’t get it. Here we have Frank Rich using his New York Times column to push a bogus Democratic Party talking-point a week before the election, and I’ve expended the time and effort to dismantle it, and no linky-love? What gives?”
The answer came in the subsequent link:
“PICKING ON FRANK RICH IS SO EASY IT’S HARDLY WORTH IT, but some people enjoy the practice.”
Well, the election is over and Americans evidently weren’t swayed by that idiotic Obama-cut-your-taxes propaganda, so I suppose Professor Reynolds is right: Frank Rich can be ignored as harmless.
It is nevertheless enjoyable practice to dismantle the endless idiocy of the Worst Columnist in America the World All Human History.
Today, for example, Rich denounces those “wealthy Americans . . . who take far more from America than they give back.”
Rich’s editors permit him to go on in this vein for 1,538 words in a column that involves no original reporting. He interviewed no one. He didn’t pick up the phone and call any sources, nor did this column require him to set foot outside his apartment. He watches “60 Minutes,” reads Think Progress and throws in some “empirical evidence” from a “deservedly lauded new book” by two political science professors.
What is the journalistic purpose of such an effort? Where is the value to the New York Times?
One possible answer: Rich articulates the inner rationale by which the newspaper’s liberal readership justify their political prejudices. He lends his Harvard-educated eloquence to these prejudices, providing his readers with reassurance that they’re absolutely right and that anyone who disagrees with them is hopelessly ignorant.
