Debate Night Open Thread

BERRIEN COUNTY, Michigan
Tonight is the second and final presidential debate, which I’ll be watching in the hotel lobby here. During our drive across northern Ohio and Indiana to arrive here this evening, we saw dozens of Trump signs and only one Biden sign. A quick preview of the debate:

The stakes couldn’t be higher for Thursday’s second and final presidential debate between Democratic nominee Joe Biden and President Trump.
The showdown – coming with just 12 days to go until Election Day on Nov. 3 – is the last chance for both major party standard bearers to make their case in front of a massive national audience watching and listing on TV and radio and streaming online.
And it may be the last opportunity to reach out to the dwindling number of voters who’ve yet to make up their minds.
“This final debate will give each candidate a live opportunity to strengthen their core messaging and enhance their potential reach to undecided voters,” highlighted John Link, vice president at Advertising Analytics, a leading ad-tracking firm.
With so much on the line, it’s no wonder the campaigns are trading fire over numerous aspects regarding the debate, from the mute button to prevent the candidates from interrupting each other during their initial two minute responses at the top of each segment to the topics themselves.
The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) – the bipartisan group that’s been organizing and running these faceoffs for more than three decades – announced late last week that fighting COVID-19, American families, national security, leadership, climate change and race in America will be the major topics debated during six 15-minute sections at the commercial-free 90-minute showdown at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.

I’ll be updating occasionally throughout the evening.

UPDATE 9:07 p.m. ET: They open with a COVID-19 question, basically blaming Trump, which is of course the Biden campaign’s theme.

UPDATE 9:17 p.m. ET: Notice how they allow this to go on and on, back and forth. The Biden campaign wants to make COVID-19 the main theme of the campaign, and the debate opens with 15 minutes on the subject, thus validating the preferred partisan narrative.

UPDATE 9:25 p.m. ET: Now more than 20 minutes of COVID-19, as if this will be the defining issue of the next four years.

UPDATE 9:32 p.m. ET: Now Trump brings up Hunter, and Biden claims he’s never taken any money from foreign sources, ever.

UPDATE 9:42 p.m. ET: Reactions to the Hunter questions:

UPDATE 9:50 p.m. ET: More reactions to Biden:

UPDATE 9:56 p.m. ET: After endlessly lying about Hunter’s foreign business deals, now Biden lies about healthcare.

UPDATE 10:13 p.m. ET: We’re past the halfway mark, and the general feeling of conservatives on Twitter is that Trump is winning this debate, bigtime.

Maybe they’re partial, but I can’t imagine that Biden’s winning over many people with his wobbly performance tonight.

UPDATE 10:39 p.m. ET: Biden vows to end the oil industry!

Good-bye, Pennsylvania! Good-bye, Ohio!

Debate over. Watching CNN and Jake Tapper is trying very hard to spin this as a “fine performance” by Joe Biden. Whatever you say, Jake.

Ohio Sheriff Offers Free One-Way Tickets to Celebrities Threatening to Leave U.S.

Posted on | October 22, 2020 | 1 Comment

Butler County is a suburb of Cincinnati:

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones says he will help purchase one-way plane tickets for any celebrity who wishes to leave the country if President Donald Trump is reelected.
The sheriff, who has gone viral in the past for his Facebook posts, including his comments on the tensions between communities and police across the country. “I won’t tolerate it, period. You shoot at the police expect us to shoot back,” Jones said in September.
Now, Jones is commenting on the upcoming presidential election.
“Celebrities threatening to leave the United States if the president is re-elected. This happened in 2016 and it is believed not one celebrity left then and it appears the same threats are being made this election year,” Jones wrote on Facebook.
“I hope you do leave and if there’s any way I can help — I’m not a rich person — but I would be willing to throw in $10 to a special fund to help get you a flight or whatever it takes,” Jones said in a video which now has 125,000 views. . . .
“I’ll even help them pack,” Jones wrote.
In the video, the sheriff explained how he believes the United States is the greatest country in the world, “regardless of who the president is.”
“I will help fund that trip. You just can’t come back,” Jones said.

You tell ’em, sheriff!

Ohio Is Trump Country

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ohio
This morning I drove down to Mt. Gilead, county seat of Morrow County, and the route along Highway 61 was lined with Trump signs. The ratio of Trump to Biden signs was at least 10-to-1, if not higher. The county Republican Party headquarters in Mt. Gilead wasn’t yet open, but I got photos of their lobby through the window. It is difficult to explain to anyone who hasn’t been here how lopsidedly Republican this area is. In 2016, Trump got 72% of the vote in Morrow County, and 71% in neighboring Crawford County. Out of Ohio’s 88 counties, Trump won 80, with Hillary’s votes concentrated in urban areas — Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Toledo, etc. — and a few suburban areas like Lorain County (which also includes Oberlin College).

The contrast between rural and small-town Ohio and our nation’s big cities is an essential fact of the political divide in America. Folks here are not any kind of radical “right-wing,” they’re just ordinary hard-working people who enjoy the tranquil pleasures of country life, and thus have little in common with the decadent bicoastal urban elites.

Trump got 52% of the vote in Ohio against Hillary four years ago. He will almost certainly score a solid majority here for his re-election.

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ohio
Just a few scenes of the maple trees around my mother-in-law’s house here in rural Ohio, where polls show President Trump with a narrow lead over Joe Biden but, in fact, everybody knows Trump will carry the state by a decisive margin (he won Ohio by 8 points in 2016).

Ohio’s ‘Republican’ Governor

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ohio
Republicans are the party of business, the party of free enterprise and deregulation. So why in the world is the Republican governor of Ohio dictating 10 p.m. “last call” at bars?

An Ohio state representative who led the charge to reverse Gov. Mike DeWine’s order to move last call at bars and restaurants to 10 p.m. could not be happier other lawmakers are joining the fight.
State Rep. Al Cutrona, R-Canfield, introduced a bill in early September to stop DeWine’s late July order to stop bars and restaurants from serving alcohol past 10 p.m. On Thursday, Senate President Larry Obhof, R-Medina, and President Pro Tem Bob Peterson, R-Washington Court House, co-sponsored legislation to do the same thing.
For his part, DeWine has said over the past two weeks he is reviewing the order. However, he also announced Tuesday the state passed 5,000 COVID-19 deaths and is averaging nearly 500 more cases a day than it did two weeks ago. . . .
The bill would allow alcohol sales within the time frame that already exists under Ohio law. It also prevents any disciplinary actions resulting from violations of DeWine’s order.
Cutrona’s bill removes alcohol-sales restrictions due to the COVID-19 state of emergency. It also stops the Ohio Liquor Control Commission from restricting hours of operation established before the emergency.
“I want to make sure these small businesses can push through these trying times,” Cutrona said. “The bar and restaurant industry is completely suffering right now. That 10 p.m. ban takes away their prime time of making revenue. If they can follow the guidelines before 10 p.m., then they can do it at 2 a.m.”

Do I want to be drinking in a crowded bar during a pandemic? No, but if you want to take your chances, go ahead.

The governor’s decision to move last call to 10 p.m. was arbitrary, and cannot be justified in the name of “science.” If it is safe to drink in a bar at 10 p.m., why does it suddenly become unsafe at 10:01 p.m.? All the governor’s policy is doing is depriving businesses of revenue, with no demonstrable health benefit. It is as if DeWine feels a need to compete with Gretchen Whitmer in the Lockdown Mania Derby.

ROAD TRIP!

Posted on | October 21, 2020 | Comments Off on ROAD TRIP!

Good Lord willing, tonight I’ll be in Crawford County, Ohio, then I’ll spend Thursday and Friday in Berrien County, Michigan, before returning to Ohio on Saturday, then back home on Sunday.

This is family travel, involving my youngest two children, including the handsome blond son who wants us to meet his future in-laws. Nevertheless, as fortune would have it, our trip will take us to two crucial Midwestern “battleground” states, and I’ll try to do something in the way of gathering politically relevant information. Almost certainly, I can find a way to contact the Berrien County Republican Party, perhaps swing by their headquarters in Saint Joseph (assuming, that is, that evil Governor Whitmer hasn’t shut down Republican campaign activity in Michigan).

All of which is a preamble to my usual Shoe Leather Fund reminder that the Five Most Important Words in the English Language are:

HIT THE FREAKING TIP JAR!

Hunter Biden, ‘Allegedly’

Posted on | October 21, 2020 | 2 Comments

My apologies for not providing regular updates on the Hunter Biden scandal which is, in fact, the Joe Biden scandal. That is to say, nobody would really care what was found on Hunter’s laptop computer, were it not for the fact that the son was getting lucrative foreign deals based on his father’s position as vice president of the United States.

Because the story was developing over a period of days, and getting abundant coverage elsewhere, I didn’t feel a need to add my two cents to the rapidly growing pile of headlines. But it’s turned into a major scandal, and here are three recent headlines from The Federalist:

There’s No Evidence For NYT’s
‘Russian Disinformation’ Smokescreen
Of Hunter Biden’s Emails

Secret Service Travel Records Confirm
Hunter Biden Trips Detailed In Emails

FBI, DOJ Debunk Claims The Hunter Biden
Laptop Story Is ‘Russian Disinformation’

The liberal media’s attempt to suppress this story, by repeating nonsensical Democratic Party propaganda about “Russian disinformation,” is exposed as profoundly dishonest. The media are lying. The emails have been corroborated as real. Even the Biden campaign itself has not denied that these are actually Hunter Biden’s emails, and the facts contained in those emails? It’s just damning.

Those emails, however, are not the entirety of the scandal:

Hunter Biden is facing accusations that his laptop includes numerous suggestive images of underage girls, Rudy Giuliani announced on Newsmax TV Tuesday night. Rudy Giuliani also broke the news that a text message between Hunter and Joe indicates potentially nefarious activity, including Facetiming naked, between Hunter and an unnamed 14-year-old girl.
A source close to the matter, though, who claims to have seen the images on Hunter’s laptop, told Revolver that about one-third of the images are of the same underage girl. Some of the images are topless, while in others she is shown in suggestive positions with Hunter himself.
Remarkably, while Giuliani has not alleged this, Revolver’s source claimed that the illicit photos on Hunter’s laptop were of a member of the Biden family.

“Allegedly,” I hasten to add. While I cannot verify what Giuliani says about the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop, ask yourself this: What accounts for the “Deep State” corruption of the FBI and the CIA? Why were our law-enforcement and intelligence agencies in the tank for Hillary? What sort of hidden crimes are bureaucrats attempting to conceal? Who is being protected by this war against Trump?

I don’t know. But those QAnon guys have some suspicions.
