Hard Times for Gender Studies Major

Hilarity ensued Monday after @Andria_XX complained that social-media criticism of Miley Cyrus included “bodyshaming/slutshaming” and “heteropatriarchal crap.” Readers will recall that Andria has an “Honors BA in Social Justice and Peace Studies” and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Gender Studies. So . . . how’s that going?

“I have a honors BA and I’m defending my MA thesis
in two weeks. I am also apply for jobs and I can
only find stuff in the
service industry. I applied
for a Hotel Front Desk Clerk job today.
My degrees mean NOTHING.
I am at the end of my rope.
“

What? Being an advanced student of useless ideology doesn’t result in meaningful employment? That’s just really . . . unfair.

  1. I was young once, and foolish. I know what it is to have picked a sincerely well-meant but utterly foolish major, pursued and attained with all the pride and fire a youthful belly can muster. But alas…alas.

The good news, though, is that one can recover from such a drastic, expensive error, but only if one is first willing to acknowledge one has made a drastic, expensive error. That very often requires becoming in some sense conservative; i.e., recognizing AND learning from the butt-kicking the real world serves you as a direct result of your bad decision-making. Failure to make this leap is why you have over-educated hipster bookstore clerks and condescending coffee-jerks well into their 30s who bitterly hate everyone responsible for their dimly recognized failure…everyone except themselves, invariably.

Andria, I take mine with a double shot of heavy cream and no chit-chat. I got real work to do now.

  2. There’s failure, and then there’s “Canadian Feminists With ‘Social Justice Studies’ Degrees” failure.

One of them is funny as hell.

  3. If that is true, she is well and truly beyond the reach of self-examination. Socrates supposedly said an un-self-examined life is not worth living. Very probably true but what’s absolutely true is that those who refuse to examine themselves invariably inflict their inevitable frustrations on others, usually through the proxy of political power. And there’s not a thing we can do to stop any of them.

  4. Of course, the sad thing is that I have exactly the same problem, and I have a master of science in computer science, along with years of experience in industry. Food service, here I come!

  5. Years of experience, meaningful skills.

Let me guess: A white male over 40 who doesn’t qualify as a “diversity” hire?

  6. Okay we’re having a little fun with her, but let me try and help.

Sweetie, try Human Resources with a big corporation.

  7. She will end up in fundraising for nonprofit world.

Being able to keep a straight face while writing utter drivel is a plus. Condescension and guilt-tripping are the order of the day, at least in some of the more irritating grant requests I review.

In fact, someone should suggest it to her. I only say this since she is Canadian, and I am, thereby, safe from having to read her work.

    Probably.

  8. That’s where a lot of them end up. I’m not quite sure why; it’s not as if HR is a gig for amateurs, in this day and age.

  9. I shouldn’t laugh, should I? I’m laughing, though.

Probably because I’m reading and writing in the comfort of my recliner at home, rather than on my tiny phone screen and irritating screen keyboard.

  10. In that case, you turn into my guy. He projects the whole, “Crazy old geek – he knows what to do and how, and don’t get in his way, he’ll leave his boot-prints all over your back” vibe.

  11. Sorry, I’m just a dumb drunk redneck, but that is some funny sh*t right there.

But I can about guarantee she has a bright future with the DNC. Hell, she could be the first woman president of the USA! Just Photoshop a long form birth certificate and Voila! She’s an American Citizen!

  12. Ace has the world’s best comment section. The only problem is, there are so many comments made, it’s nearly impossible to say anything that hasn’t already been said. Usually better and more funnily, as well.

  13. “Very best deadpan face.”

    You’re a regular Arthur Dietrich.

(5 points if you’re old enough to get that w/o looking it up)

  14. I have an Intern working for me, right now, who’s a good example of recovering from life mistakes…

Two MA degrees, one in African-American history and one in Women’s Studies.

Spent ten years working menial jobs after she graduated, working up and down the West Coast, including a stint in a fish canning factory in Alaska. Tattoos and piercings out the wahoo.

Was barely keeping up with her student loan debt, and was getting nowhere, quick.

Two years ago she wised up, dumped the progressive ideation, and went back to school to complete an Engineering degree. When she graduates this Fall, she has two job offers already in hand, and I intend to give her a third one.

Bottom line, she’ll be making $80K with great benefits by January, while our heroine is bussing tables…
