Lesbians mourned Wednesday when it was announced they had lost what was, to them, an important tradition:
The 40th Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, to be held this August, will be the last, its founder announced today.
The storied women-only event, first held in 1976, has been the subject of controversy in recent years because of its exclusion of transgender women, with many artists and organizations deciding to boycott. . . .
[Founder and organizer Lisa Vogel] acknowledged, “There have been struggles; there is no doubt about that. This is part of our truth, but it is not — and never has been — our defining story. The Festival has been the crucible for nearly every critical cultural and political issue the lesbian feminist community has grappled with for four decades. Those struggles have been a beautiful part of our collective strength; they have never been a weakness.” . . .
The exclusion of transgender women from the fest has led performers such as the Indigo Girls, Antigone Rising, and Lea DeLaria to withdraw from the event, and last year several national LGBT organizations signed on to a petition from statewide LGBT group Equality Michigan calling on the festival to change its rule limiting attendance to “womyn-born-womyn.” . . .
You can read the rest. The aggression of transgender activists toward lesbians was one of the little-noticed aspects of feminist politics that caught my attention in January 2014 when I began researching radical feminism. At first, it appeared to me that lesbians like Cathy Brennan were the villains in that conflict. The more I researched the issue, however, the more it seemed that Brennan and her fellow radicals were actually the victims of a deliberate hate campaign perpetrated by some seriously disturbed individuals who have zero — I repeat, zero — respect for women.
“The transgender activists are trying to silence their critics. If they can silence a feminist like Cathy Brennan, guess what? Conservative critics of feminism will be next in line for this suppression of freedom.”
— Robert Stacy McCain, Aug. 26, 2014
No one could accuse me of sympathizing with lesbian feminists, but on this issue, they were certainly right: Defining “woman” is a matter of science, not politics. Furthermore, as numerous examples have made clear, “transwomen” (i.e., males who pursue “transition” to female) very often have histories of violence toward actual women. More than that, however, there is the matter of whether women who with to join all-female organizations or attend all-female events have the right to insist that the institutions are only for women — you know, the kind of people who have XX chromosomes and vaginas?
All the liberal rhetoric about “diversity” and “inclusion” fails here. Beyond the obvious issue of civility — it’s rude to barge in where you are unwanted and begin yelling about your “right” to be there — whatever happened to the vaunted “right to privacy”? Have feminists forgotten their own principles? Or is this just further proof that liberals don’t actually have any principles? Behold the gloating headline at the liberal feminist site Jezebel:
Trans-Excluding Michigan Womyn’s
Music Festival to End This Year
Rub some salt in your enemy’s wound. “Sister is powerful,” eh? Liberal advocates of “inclusion” have won this battle, but if they expect radical lesbians to stop fighting the war, I’ll bet they’ve got another think coming.
Hell hath no fury, etc.
Conservatives ought to pay attention to this conflict, because there are important issues and principles involved. Much like the Indiana pizza parlor that was targeted by a hate-storm, the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival fallen victim to a dubious idea of “rights” that, in reality, involves the negation of liberty. The strange concept I have called the “Compulsory Approval Doctrine” is a dangerous ideological weapon. If a small-town pizza parlor can’t choose which weddings it will cater, why should an all-woman event be allowed to exclude men in dresses?
Sure, we can enjoy our conservative schadenfreude at the expense of a lesbian music festival, laughing to see feminists suffer the consequences of their own theoretical dogma. If “the personal is political,” after all, everything becomes political. So the question of whether people with penises must be accepted as “women” is to be decided by a plebiscite or (in reality) imposed upon us by a consensus of cultural elites.
Whatever Justice Anthony Kennedy says is a “marriage,” we will be compelled to accept as such, and who knows what the “Emerging Awareness” will next require? Democracy in the 21st century begins more and more to resemble dictatorship, except for the occasional eruptions of lawless anarchy. The Rule of Law is trampled under foot and our constitutional republic is but a fading memory.
“The fantastical project of yesterday, which was mentioned
only to be ridiculed, is today the audacious reform, and
will be tomorrow the accomplished fact.”
They call it “progress,” but you may notice an aroma of burning brimstone, as we near the destination of this road paved with good intentions.
"Let's 'mainstream' insane perversity," the liberals told us, "because what could possibly go wrong?" http://t.co/mxu86bXNz5 #tcot

‘It is a pity that our friends lie in between,’ said Gimli. ‘If no land divided Isengard and Mordor, then they could fight while we watched and waited.’
‘The victor would emerge stronger than either, and free from doubt,’ said Gandalf.
No, they’re really not. However, the irony of calling out ad hominems after performing a few is pretty entertaining. Do carry on.
Oh, really? That’s what the government did? You live in alternate universe where there was no civil rights struggle for the LGBT community. Their victories, which you assume were handed to them, were achieved by suffering at the hands of cops who you undoubtedly cheered on to beat them a little harder.
I was raised Catholic. I know all about religious mythology and the rest of that crap. Even though I’m an atheist I usedto respect the religious beliefs of others but after listening to actual Christians speak its war you’re at war with the rest of us and I’ll no longer respect your beliefs.
Put them all, both sides in convention venue, lock the doors after making sure they’ve all received their complimentary letter opener.
Wow, you really are SmokinIt.
I don’t care about your excuses. You do not understand the word of God, you do not know anything about His heart, mind, or will, and you do not know what true Christianity is.
So I repeat: you only prove your idiocy by talking about things you know nothing about.
One of the interesting features of Disqus is the ability to check someone’s comment history to get a feel for their leanings. For example, if you interpret a post as Leftist or anti-religion, you could check the posting history. If you discover the poster to have strong Christian and conservative leanings, based on that posting history, you should assume you’ve misinterpreted something and read it again.
For example, you might be reading a post by someone who’s become quite frustrated with people who think that prayer will solve problems and no actual work is required. It would make someone look very foolish to jump all over that poster as “Leftist” or a “troll” or similar comments.
(There’s a strong hint for the action to be taken before further posts. It’s presented quite openly in the first paragraph.)
Evidence?
Why do you make that assumption? Seriously, that’s got nothing to do with what anyone has said.
Sure, we can enjoy our conservative schadenfreude at the expense of a lesbian music festival, laughing to see feminists suffer the consequences of their own theoretical dogma.
Oh yes. I believe I will enjoy it. Because it’s fun.
Dr Albert Szent-Györgyi?
I’m sorry, but I am beyond tired of being told this is a “civil rights” matter.
Civil rights belong to individuals. There is no civil right to be a man and use the women’s restroom.
If you want me to simply tolerate the whole keyboard of whatever folks wish to do to and call themselves, I don’t actually have a problem with that, and never have had. But when I am told I cannot simply tolerate, but must celebrate, that’s not civil rights. That’s oppressing me.
Go away and think about it.
Atheists really do love forcing their religion on us, don’t they?
Oh, they still get their treatments as well as their celebrations now!
Maybe the lesbians think they’re just defending their piece of the Left’s zero-sum pie…
It’s always fun to watch your foes eat each other.
…I didn’t mean that like it sounded.
It’s hilarious when “inclusiveness” slams into “safe space.”
It’s like the liberal moonbat version of matter and anti-matter.
They could open for the Violent Femmes!
I think I saw Sic Semper open for Tranny Tyranny in 2004 at the Cumberland County Civic Center…
Your’re not a big Annise Parker fan, are you?
“…radfems believe the sexes are essentially interchangeable and that gender is a social construct invented to rape women.”
The logic loop here, of course, is that this notion of one group (called “males”) inventing a global system of oppression on a second group (called “females”) is a notion that requires a… (wait for it!) …a binary!
What should the spectators chant? “Two non-males enter, one non-male leaves!”?
Yes, you did! Denounce yourself!
Well… Many of them still have dicks, so there is that…
“I don’t give a damn what people do, so long as they don’t do it in the streets and frighten the horses”?
To tell the truth, I do feel bad.
But the real comedy is when leftists start punching leftist causes.
Up here in uber-left Washington State, we had the Makah tribe restarting their whale hunts and the left wringing their hands over which to support: whales or Native Americans.
The comedy was (and still is) HUGE!
The whole thing is hilarious: 1.) trash the “gender binary”; 2.) celebrate womyn.
Swanee, how I love you, how I love you…
Your personal portable “safe space.”
The dangers of entering the cartoon universe.
Yeah, the old, “It was the same thing as the Civil Rights marches,” implication.
I’m surprised the gay mafia can’t put a lid on their Jew hatred long enough to use holocaust terminology. I mean, if you’re going to inflate a “struggle” you may as well go whole Angus. (I kept it Kosher.)
But in the meantime, the trannies and lezzies fight each other, instead of attacking traditional marriage.
If this could be replicated, couldn’t we use this “divide and conquer” strategy (as the left employs) to greater success. In other words, have them fight each other instead of us.
I believe you’re thinking of the Violent Phlegms.
I think you’re thinking of the Violent Flems, which is a Belgian punk group.
It’s OK as long as they’re thoroughly cooked.
Kinda sorta the same OCD problem.
Certainly not after the mutilation.
You’ve merely demonstrated your lack of mental chops. You threw over what you call a mythology for something that is utterly irrational. It takes far more faith to be an atheist.
Follow your own advice. Look at the context in which I made my comment.
Given what is said in prophecy, I wish you luck in “changing things.” The Church was never called to “change things” but to make disciples.
And, things are going to get worse until Christ returns to rule. Given what he does when he returns, it’s quite a ways from that to a “magic trick.”
So true! They don’t realize their own role in creating the atmosphere these mentally ill fetishists are exploiting. On their blogs and sites, they even try to blame conservative Christians for causing this for all the obvious reasons.
A Belgian punk group? How would I know that? I think you’re confusing me with someone who’s not an irritating smart aleck. =)
BWAHAHAHAHA!
I only know about the group because I simply made it up.
Transblack, before transblack was cool? Holy mackerel, Andy!

You should strenuously denounce yourself for that.
That’s not hard at all: the lower number has THREE decimal places!!!
There’s also the Violent Fens, a novelty filking group that plays SF conventions.
If they existed, that is.
Is this a hillbilly kissin’ cousins music festival where they play saws and wear giant cheese-grater vests or are they just lesbians?
And ate a box of Ex-Lax and guzzled an entire liter of vodka.
