Given time constraints and general bewilderment at the Democrat takeover of the GOP, there just hasn’t been much to say. Hopefully Darleen will get Friday Fiction going again. On Twitter, it’s been an endless parade of horribles if I don’t join the Trumpenproletariat. Fortunately, the indispensable Jonah Goldberg offers a fine read to help with the can’t-get-motivated-to-vote-for-a-Democrat blues. Read the whole thing, including the blowback against the mighty James Taranto:
I may not be the philologist James is, but I do grok that Perry was speaking metaphorically when he said Trump was a cancer and leading us to Hell. But speaking figuratively and speaking seriously are not antipodes. One can use metaphors and still speak with sincerity. When Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved,” he was speaking metaphorically but not insincerely. I made the mistake of thinking Rick Perry was serious when he said these things. Perhaps Taranto’s the wiser man for cynically believing words never matter when uttered by politicians.
I guess I should thank Johnny B. Cryin’ and Mike Pence. The Duhnamic Duo, just ahead of the Indiana primary, broke whatever weak geas had me thinking that one should default to supporting the GOP nominee. The mask is off. I joke about our “1.1-party system. That “1.1” is like a stencil for an international gesture, pointed downward. For the last decade, the Vichy GOP has struggled between craving the bigger offices in DC afforded the majority party, and utter disgust for the Bitter Cling-On conservative base that would deliver that majority.
It’s sort of a Glorious Progressive Revolution, the way that conservatives have been thrown under the bus, in favor of Donald of Orange. (Donald is the extroverted sociopath from New York, controlled by the Tribble on his head. Donald is not to be confused with the introverted sociopath from New York holding the remote for the Tribble.) About the only shoe left to drop is the nominating convention. I’ll hold off joining the Libertarian party until I hear what Ted Cruz has to say. As the leading conservative remaining in the Republocrat Party, and a genius of Jonah Goldberg’s caliber, Ted is about the only person imaginable who could argue me into any GOP support. Promises to be some fine rhetoric. My guess is that he’ll come real, real close to returning Pence’s carefully calibrated flaccid support for a Trump/Busey ticket.
You can take the Democrat out of the party, but you can't take the Democratic party out of @realDonaldTrump

It’s fine to act all butt hurt if you like, Smitty. But the voters already decided they didn’t like or trust Ted Cruz. And that was in spite of $150 million spent by Cruz and his super-Pacs to try and convince them. The few votes he’d get simply means Hillary Clinton gets elected. Wait and see what your ‘conservative movement’ looks like after 4 years and 3 far left SCOTUS justices, massive hate speech laws and censorship of conservative sites, repeal of all voter ID laws and the Second Amendment, millions of legalized illegal alien Democrat voters and boatloads of imported Muslim refugees.
You know perfectly well Donald Trump isn’t going to do anything like that. and if you don’t you’re simply not paying attention.
It’s one thing not to like him, but disrespecting Trump in this way means disrespecting the voters as well as the Constitution , whose central tenet is that the people are sovereign.
I myself did a 180 from liking Cruz a great deal. His conduct during the campaign, the people financing him, his fawning all over anti-Semites like Mike Bickle as well as his pick of globalist shill Carly Fiorina (do some research on HER sometime) pretty much told me everything I wanted know about him.
With all that, I would have voted for him if he’d won, even though just watching him in action made me certain he’d get slaughtered in the general.
Y’see, I have some close friends who were just as dizzy over Cruz as you are, and we all hashed it out among ourselves after Wisconsin. We all agreed that Hillary would be a disaster, and that we’d all vote for whomever the GOP nominee was.
Out of four heavy duty Cruz supporters, three of them are keeping their word. The fourth is acting just like the candidate she supported. She’s become a #neverTrump, breaking her word, acting out just like the candidate she supported.
You know what? I’m not trying to convince you of a damned thing. At some point, I hope you and others like you do some thinking about what you’re supporting and the consequences.
I came to hold Goldberg in contempt when the Paleos owned him better than 10 years ago. Having utterly humiliated the man, Gottfried called him on his Jewishness saying, “unlike you, both of my parents were Jewish.” Even after that, Jonah couldn’t shut his arrogant mouth.
Having exchanged more than one email with him during that fiasco, I can say the man is no genius, and he’s a Neocon through and through, unworthy of any respect.
Sorry—can’t take your comment seriously.
I never expected to be defending Donnie, but Hillary certainly IS worse than him, and knows her way better around the crooked byways of Washington, in itself a danger to good governance.
I hear what you’re saying, and it has merit. Because we abet it.
Trump has cheated a lot of people, and I wouldn’t want to do business with him. OTOH he hasn’t set up a “charity” the main purpose of which is self-enrichment, he hasn’t taken bribes from foreign government to change policy, nor has he gone to anywhere near the effort Hillary has to destroy the reputations of those who get in his way.
There’s no comparison.
The binary thinking doesn’t match reality.
So, you’re saying the “fundamental transformation” is a strictly one-way affair?
“willing to publicly state an upward limit on the U.S. population”
Uhhh, wut? You could run for office and be the first to posit such I number, I guess. Probably a handful would be interested, if only due to idle curiosity.
OK, I don’t agree with your assessment. He may be halfway to a Messianic Jew (to judge by his quotation of Jesus in the article linked in this post) but that’s completely independent of his cogent understanding of the issues.
Great troll. We’ll see if I end up taking a sojourn with the Libertarians. Because the GOP coming out as a subsidiary of the Democrats has been too disappointing.
1) Being unpredictable, Trump could always be worse than Hillary. People tend to undervalue risk though.
2) Even if he’s better than Hillary, he could still be bad enough to destroy the party and hand the USA over to Democrats for a generation. That was the gist of the GWB presidency.
3) Once one of the two is elected, voters will forget about the other and will only know about the sins of the one elected. People tend to ignore opportunity costs.
The eternal dillemna of the third party.
I’d look at some of your allies. I’m thinking that you have a lot of McCainiacs in your bunch. They ruthlessly, loudly, and without regard for opposing arguments attacked the Base for not submitting to their will. They offered nothing, but scorn.
Sound familiar?
Meanwhile, the Conservatives tried to patiently, mostly controlled manner tried to address these people who seemed to delight in emoting all over the place.
That would be me, Dai, Robert What, and the other Rob and even Rhino.
With choosing Libertarian, you will have chosen the historical Libertarian role. That is, to be the useful spoiler for the Powers That Be in holding back the Conservatives.
A lot of Libertarians are ok with this because they hate socons more than they love liberty.
Now if you’re criticizing Perry for his overstatements, you really need to slap down a half dozen of the Never Trumpers first.
He’s unlikeable.
He followed Trump on the Wall.
He’s married to Goldman Sachs.
Conservatives haven’t done that good of a job.
I would have happily votedh for him in the general election.
David, it is what it is. You need to get over it. You don’t want to be one of those Goldwater was so great guys.
And Spock would have taken out the Pod Person known by duped Earthlings as ‘Ted Cruz’.
This is some seriously brilliant argument.
This situation reminds me of 1964, when establishment types and Jew-haters came out against Goldwater. The result was Lyndon Johnson, who did more damage to the nation than any Presidents other than Buchanan and Obama. It’ll be the same with Hillary.
Trump is a jerk of the first water, certainly, and many of his supporters are themselves no better than ignorant clowns. But I expect most rational conservatives to come around once the bruises fade. To oppose him at this stage of the game is simply cutting one’s nose off to spite one’s face.
Escapism doesn’t provide real options.
Not disagreeing with your post, just wanting an explanation. (I am new here) How did Trump give that much money to the two mentioned, if there are limits to campaign donations? This whole donation thing puzzles me.
Johnson sucks on social issues (he is surprisingly good on abortion via state’s rights) and immigration.
But the guy nearly halved government when he was in office.
I don’t care who gets married to who and high levels of immigration if people (immigrant or not) are no longer able to live off the public dole.
No, he threatens to sue them for every dollar they have if they don’t sign an NDA. How is that any better?
They remind me of the story about when the Beatles toured the United States for the first time, and thousands of screaming girls were at every performance. As one roadie described it, the Beatles would come out on stage, and the girls would be so excited that lots of them would release their bladders, to the point that it was running down the stands and pooling underneath. Hence his memories of being a roadie for the Beatles then is dominated by the memory of puddles of piss.
An apt metaphor for the Trump campaign, I think.
Go join the Democrats, then, since you’re so enamored with Trump.
Well, Trump is a Nationalist Socialist.
Hey, True Believer, I’m not like you.
Projection, thy name is Finrod.
So, let’s move 50,000 high-level Chinese Communist Party members to your hometown. You okay with that ?
Yes, this is an intelligence test.
I make a reasoned, polite comment on topic and I’m a troll?
Thanks for providing evidence of another problem with Cruz…the attitude of a number of his supporters.
By all means go libertarian. I’m sure Hillary approves.
Bye.
Good riddance, and don’t come back.
Go back to your Alex Jones friends, Trumpbot.
The Establishment is all behind Trump, Trumpbot. He’ll submit to their will soon enough.
Blow me, Trumpbot. You and your candidate both reek of stale piss.
Own it, Trumpbot:

SuperPACs.
Valid point.
Blow me, Trumpbot. You’re the one defending the NYC liberal.
You may not care for the ‘C’ word, but it has helped Trump. A lot. The word does apply quite well to people of the stripe of Graham, McConnell, and Boehner.
I like the man, but as CA Governor, Schwarzenegger was as useless as tits on a bull. The fact that you would even consider him for higher office I present as evidence you’re mentally deranged.
He didn’t understand much of anything in his pathetic battle with the paleos. If he has an understanding, cogent or otherwise, of the issues, it will be a first. Everytime I thought the man might be growing up, he proves me wrong.
Your mileage my vary, but I’m not giving him fuel for his bus any time soon.
Bickle isn’t an anti-Semite and it isn’t likely that anyone could have stood up to the manure storm Trump laid on everyone that dared run against him. I seriously doubt that you are going to look back on pulling the lever for Trump with any kind of equanimity once you see the actual product in action.
I’m not going to pull the lever for Trump because of what I’ve seen Trump do to his opponents, and how the Trumpanzees have acted.
The Trumpbots are just the revenge of the Paulbots.
Why did Rand lose this election? His father sold the white nationalist list to Trump in 2015.
The Trumpbots have can only scream “Jew” “Neocon” “Cuckservative” just like Paulbots.
If Trump wants this vote of this former New Yorker (who watched him rise, build his own power base and sell it out to the Clintons in 1999 because he wanted to), give me a solid argument (without saying Voting A = B b/c that’s false Voting A = A or abstaining is neither A or B), prove to me that Trump is an ally, not a hustler using Paulbots and White Nationalists to take the Presidency for himself.
Bots can’t think in 3 dimensions or think of the voters beyond the primary.
Johnson isn’t for that.
However, Trump would be, for the right price, just like Hillary.
Trumpbot, you jest. We know who is the unthinking around here.
But you do have a point.
‘And reading comprehension fail. I understand why you fail because you’re not like me. You are a partisan, and probably a RINO or a Libertarian, while I’m open-minded, and fair, and honest.
You can’t understand me.
I agree Schwarzaneggar was useless. And I agree with EBL that this is a possible future for Trump. What part of ‘caluclated dice roll’ did you not understand?
You can defend someone without being a bot. But since you’re about fifty lines of code created by a drunk Cruzite programmer I understand that you can’t understand this.
Your illogic does not compute.
Did you call the Tea Party ‘teabaggers’ or is this a special fascination with me?
That’s good that Johnson sees how terrible that would be. But I’m going from what you said…. ‘high levels of immigration’ you don’t care about.
As far as I’m concerned, anyone who actively targets Jews for conversion as the main goal of his ministry and states repeatedly that they have ‘just a little grace to accept Jesus” before they’re killed en masse is an anti-semite. And I don’t throw that around lightly.
You have no idea how many Jews were faced with that exact ‘choice’ over the centuries and were murdered when they refused what Bickle is offering.
Cruz wanted his endorsement because Bickle has a firm base of support in Kansas City and could help him win the Kansas caucus. And Bickle was not the only questionable figure of this type around Cruz.
JFTR, I’m fairly friendly with a number of Evangelicals. None of them
would support what Bickle is pushing, including Pastor John Hagee of
Texas, one of the most pro-Israel Pastors out there and a tzaddick in
our times.
BTW, you mention the behavior of Trump supporters, but the behavior of the Cruz supporters on this particular board towards people who have remained courteous simply because they support Trump is a good indication of whose behavior has always been questionable. Your post is a fine example.
As for manure storms, a great deal more was thrown at Trump than in the other direction…all you have to do is follow the money . Apparently you prefer Hillary’s brand of manure. Fine by me. Enjoy the taste of THAT going down if she takes over.
