Memo for Meghan McCain

“Let the in-fighting continue. . . . I don’t need some blue blooded elites who have accomplished nothing on their own to keep telling me what is right for my country. . . . I don’t need a bunch of spoiled brats who only got into the ‘best’ schools because of what other members of their family have accomplished telling me what is best for me and my country.”
— Monique Stuart

UPDATE: Columbia University alumna sweet dumb babboo Meghan didn’t know what “blue blood” meant. Good thing Sarah Palin didn’t use sangre azul or something. Ace of Spades totally clobbers it:

“Blue blood” has a variety of tones to it. Blue bloods think of it as a good term. Often it’s used in a purely descriptive, neutral way — people are objectively “blue bloods.” Same as saying they’re wealthy. Not really open to much debate.
And sometimes it’s used derisively, as in “entitled little beer-empire princesses who supposedly go into Columbia based on nothing but academic potential (wink, wink) and yet never read a single book in which the very common term ‘blue blood’ was used.”

Read the whole thing, and notice that Ace finds himself compelled to defend Sarah Palin even though he’s not exactly on board the Mama Grizzly 2012 Victory Express. Like I say, she’s making the right enemies, and that can be a very valuable asset in politics.

UPDATE I: A great sentence from Monique, summing up the basic problem with Meghan:

If she spent half as much time hatin’ on women from the party she claims to stand in opposition to she might actually be an asset to the party she claims to be a member of.

Which is a damn fine sentence, although it reminds me of a joke Lewis Grizzard used to tell:

A grad student at the University of Georgia has a research project that requires him to access rare documents available only at the Harvard University library. So he catches a plane to Boston, takes a bus to the Harvard campus and stops the first student he meets.

“Excuse me, sir, could you please tell me where the library’s at?”

“At Harvard University, we don’t end our sentences with prepositions.”

“All right,” says the Georgian. “Then could you tell me where the library’s at, asshole?”

That there’s funny, I don’t care who you are.

She’s Certainly Making the Right Enemies

Congratulations, Governor Palin:

You can add the hatred of Charles Johnson, next to the pathological obsession of Andrew Sullivan, in your trophy case. As to Joe Scarborough’s accusation that Palin is a “cultural icon” of “anti-intellectualism” . . . Hey, let’s go to the video:

“To all you people who want to send me e-mails: Don’t waste your time. I’m not going to read it.”

In other words: “My mind’s made up. Don’t try to confuse me with your so-called ‘facts.'” An attitude we might call . . . uh, anti-intellectual. Continue reading She’s Certainly Making the Right Enemies →

The Endless Delaware Post-Mortem

The day after the Delaware primary, I asked, “Is this really about 2012?” It seemed to me that many ruling-class Republicans — especially those aboard the Mitt Romney 2012 bandwagon — were attacking Christine O’Donnell as a proxy for Sarah Palin.

Given the extraordinarily good news on the House side, with the GOP gaining 63 seats, it seems absurd that some conservatives continue to cry over spilled milk, endlessly rehashing the failure of Republicans to capture a Senate majority, and especially bemoaning the outcome in Delaware.

Even if this is not merely a proxy for arguments between pro-Palin and anti-Palin camps within the GOP, it has certainly turned into one of those Dougherty’s Law situations: “If it were more like me, the Republican Party would be better off. It’s failing because it’s like you.”

In other words, the elitist attacks on O’Donnell are a veiled way of attacking the supposedly unenlightened hicks who supported O’Donnell. Longtime O’Donnell supporter Jerry Wilson at Goldfish and Clowns is sick and tired of this argument:

[T]here was a ton of ammo used in the debate over the choice between Mike Castle and Christine O’Donnell in the Delaware senatorial primary. The division was sharp, with one side stating that no matter how liberal Castle’s voting record was, he was at least a Republican and apparently electable unlike krazee Christine, while the other insisted Castle was a no-go and O’Donnell was indeed a viable candidate. Neither side was inclined to give the other much credence, and the discussion became extremely toxic.
A seldom commented on element of this was how the Castle supporters had zero personal investment in him, while O’Donnell boosters often had a strong connection with her. . . .

You should go read the whole thing.

On a related topic: Who is Ned Ryun, and why is he attacking Tea Party candidates?

Not Just ‘Yes,’ But ‘Hell, Yes!’

Addressing the subject of “The Weekly Sarah Palin Segment,” my friend Professor William Jacobson tops me:

I have 93 posts (94 with this one) in my Palin tag, most of which are devoted to responding to Palin Derangement Syndrome. . . .
They make up tales about Palin’s childhood health care, whether she had a boob job, make jokes about her giving hand jobs, claim she “rolled her eyes” when told someone was a teacher, examine the color of her bracelet to claim she dishonored war dead, falsely claim she advocated war with Iran, distort polling about her, attack her intelligence, berate her for recommending followers read a Thomas Sowell column, move next door to her to snoop on her, go after a blogger who defends her on MSNBC, claim her success is because men are aroused by her, go nuts because of her (first) book tour including counting the number of non-white people in crowds, blame her for a turkey farmer’s problems, suggest she contributed to a swine flu outbreak in Alaska, turn her into a pin-up girl for a news magazine, misrepresent her comment about “death panels,” claim she is “too sexy” to be a national politician, concoct the hoax that she didn’t know Africa was a continent, and hang her in effigy — and I post on it.

He’s exactly right. He’s also exactly right that conservatives defend Sarah Palin “not because of who Palin is, but who the Palin haters are.” We hate the haters. And then the professor swings the hammer with such accuracy as to split atoms in the nail:

But as I reflect back on the past two plus years since Palin’s nomination, I’m wondering if an all-out, knock-down, drag-out fight with the Palin haters is just what this country needs most, not least.

Read the whole thing and — Governor Palin, if you’re reading this — hire Professor Jacobson for your campaign team.

UPDATE: A Memeorandum thread, and this headline caught my attention:

McCain compares Sarah Palin to Ronald Reagan

It was that other guy.

‘The Weekly Sarah Palin Segment . . .’

“. . . in which the impression is given that the whole of conservatism is encapsulated in this one glorious woman.”

Instead, he would perhaps have us believe, the whole of conservatism is encapsulated in Charles Krauthammer’s brain.

It is not Krauthammer’s fault that the media are obsessed with presidential politics. It is not Krauthammer’s fault that, when Palin’s choice as running mate in 2008 suddenly made the GOP ticket competitive with Obama (see the poll numbers cited here), the media embarked on a search-and-destroy mission against Palin. And it is not Krauthammer’s fault that the media have continued to use Palin as a scarecrow, a Republican demon-figure presented as the too-horrifying-to-contemplate alternative to supporting Obama.

However, it is Krauthammer’s fault that he can’t speak of Palin except to dismiss her with a sneer. (Am I the only one who noticed his significant pause between “glorious” and “woman”?)

Allahpundit isn’t as openly sneering as Krauthammer: “While no one would claim that conservatism begins and ends with Palin, some of her more devoted supporters do seem to regard her as an avatar of the movement.”

Here’s my problem with such dismissive attitudes toward Palin from conservatives: It sets up the 2012 primary contest as a battle between Smart Republicans (who are presumed to oppose Palin) and Dumb Republicans (who presumably support Palin). This message — which is being shouted from the rooftops by Krauthammer, Rove and many others — will tend to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Which is to say, most of the Smart Republicans who take their political cues from the conservative intelligentsia will in fact oppose Palin. But the influence of Rove, Krauthammer et al. is not so great as they wish and, in a multi-candidate field, the irreducible hard core of Palin supporters among GOP primary voters is still large enough to win pluralities in every state where the primary electorate is limited to registered Republicans. (Seriously: Comparing the average Romney supporter to the average Palin supporter, which is more likely to trudge through the snow to attend an Iowa caucus meeting?)

There is therefore a very real possibility of Palin winning the 2012 presidential nomination, at which point all the sneering condescension of the Krauthammer/Rove class will justify the MSM in declaring, “The Dumb Republicans have won!”

And that’s not going to help beat Barack Obama, is it?

At least for the sake of argument, let Palin’s supporters stipulate that, as a candidate, she has very real liabilities. Let them grant that Palin’s detractors are sincere in their criticisms. Rule out of bounds any ad hominem attacks on the “Beltway elite” or any accusation that the anti-Palin conservatives are expressing mere snobbery toward someone they perceive as a provincial rube.

Still, from a standpoint of pure political strategy, Palin’s conservative critics are at risk of wrecking the GOP’s chances in 2012 by their constant reiteration of anti-Palin memes. If Republicans are to defeat Obama in 2012, they absolutely must have the enthusiastic support of the Palinistas, whether or not Palin wins the nomination.

If Palin’s supporters believe that she has been cheated out of the GOP nomination because a cabal of elitists conspired against her, they’re unlikely to volunteer to man phone-banks and canvass precincts and do the other kinds of grassroots activism necessary for some other Republican nominee to beat Obama.

And what if Palin is the nominee?

Elections are about choices, and I presume that Karl Rove and Charles Krauthammer — and even David Frum –would prefer to see Sarah Palin take the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2013, rather than to see Obama win a second term. If I am correct in that presumption, I would hope to see the conservative intelligentsia start acting as if a Palin presidency were both possible and preferable to Obama’s re-election.

Because it is possible, even if Palin is not your ideal candidate for job.

Sarah Palin Schools Gawker

Ruby Slipppers has the details:

Days after Sarah Palin and her publisher Harper Collins scored a major win  over the mean team at Gawker, we learn a settlement has been reached.   Alas, there won’t be a TSA screening  for Gawker at the hands of Sarah Palin any time soon.  While some may be disappointed the attorneys at Harper Collins won’t get to rifle through the junk in Gawker’s trunk, this is still a major victory for team Palin.

Sarah Palin’s New Show Less Popular Than ‘Spongebob Squarepants’?

Yes, believe it or not Spongebob is the cable ratings king:

[F]or the week of Nov. 8 the top rated non-sports show was Dancing with the Stars with nearly 20 million viewers. Yet the top rated non-sports cable show was Nick@Nite’s Spongebob Squarepants with just a bit over six million viewers. Cable simply doesn’t come close to the viewers the big three networks get.

Warner Todd Huston makes that point by way of pushing back at a Washington Post TV critic who used her column to take cheap shots at Sarah Palin’s Alaska on TLC.

Spongebob Squarepants could not be reached for comment, due to a speaking engagement in New Hampshire. Sources close to the Nickelodeon star denied that Spongebob is considering a campaign for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
