Second Terror Bombing in Russia

More than 30 people killed in two days:

A deadly suicide bombing at a crowded railroad station in southern Russia on Sunday, followed by a blast in a trolley bus on Monday in the same city, raised the specter of a new wave of terrorism six weeks before the Winter Olympics in Sochi. . . .
Russian officials attributed the explosion on Sunday to a bomb packed with shrapnel, possibly carried in a bag or backpack. It was detonated in the main railroad station in Volgograd, a city 550 miles south of Moscow and 400 miles northeast of Sochi. The bomb blew out windows in the building’s facade and left a horrific scene of carnage at its main entrance. At least 17 people were killed, and nearly three dozen others were wounded, some of them critically, meaning the death toll could still rise.
On Monday morning a blast struck a trolley bus in the city, killing at least 15 people, including an infant, according to preliminary reports. Photographs posted by Russian news organizations showed that the force of the blast tore open the bus and shattered windows nearby. Nearly two dozen others were wounded in what officials immediately described as a suicide bombing.

Success Is Its Own Defense

If something works, it works. To intellectuals, however, theory takes precedence over practice and ideological abstractions like “equality” are more important than actual success and happiness. So in the wake of their failure to destroy “Duck Dynasty” because of patriarch Phil Robertson’s alleged homophobia, now the Left has its collective panties in a bunch because, in 2009, Robertson said this:

“Make sure that she can cook a meal, you need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out,” he said. “Make sure she carries her Bible. That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road. And if she picks your ducks, now, that’s a woman.”
“They got to where they’re getting hard to find,” Robertson remarked. “Mainly because these boys are waiting until they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ’em. Look, you wait until they get to be 20 years old, the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket.”
The Duck Commander company founder added: “You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16, they’ll pick your ducks. You need to check with mom and dad about that of course.”

From all the pearl-clutching horror inspired by this quote, evidently we’re supposed to think the Robertsons are the Louisiana Taliban. But then you get to the end of the article and read this:

Robertson practices what he preaches. He began dating his wife, Kay, when she was only 14 and he was 18. They waited until Kay was 16 to get married.

Oh, that’s right: Phil and Kay Robertson recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. they’ve got four grown kids and numerous grandchildren and — by the way — they’re millionaires. For obvious reasons, the Left must discourage this way of life.

‘Pajama Boy’ as Rorshach Inkblot

The latest weird sequel to the ObamaCare ad controversy is the claim that conservatives mocking “Pajama Boy” are anti-Semites.

Such a claim involves a lot intellectual gymnastics which might be better described as the psychological projections of a profoundly disturbed personality named Jay Michaelson:

Parenthetically, the model himself is one Ethan Krupp, an Organizing for America staffer who is, in fact, Jewish. But whether Krupp himself is circumcised or not, Pajama Boy is semiotically Jewish, even stereotypically so.
In fact, Pajama Boy stands at a centuries-old nexus of anti-Semitism and misogyny.

Yeah. Right.

Jay Michaelson tells us very little about conservatives who made fun of a silly ad, but tells us an awful lot about the strange ideas that swirl around inside Jay Michaelson’s deranged mind.

Facts the ‘Experts’ Never Mention

Philip Klein calls our attention to an overlooked statistic:

Massachusetts, whose health care reform program was used as a template for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, had the highest per capita health spending in the U.S. in 2009. . . . [T]he state spent $9,278 per person on health care in 2009, which was 36 percent higher than the national average of $6,815, and 11.2 percent more than the next-highest state, New York, which spent $8,341.

Was the relatively high cost of health care in Massachusetts a cause or an effect of the push for socialized medicine? The political impetus for ObamaCare came from highly urbanized, Democrat-dominated states where the cost of health care was already high.

If the result of this national policy is to spread the misery (i.e., causing a rise in health-care costs in more rural Republican-dominated states) why should liberals care? This simply deprives the GOP states of an economic advantage they previously enjoyed.

TRF is total fertility rate — the average number of lifetime births per woman, based on annual birth rates — and you see that the top five states as measured by TFR all went for Romney, while the five lowest-fertility states all went for Obama. The average rate of the high fertility states (2.29) is 38% higher than the low-fertility states (1.67 average), which tells you that the political differences reflect profound differences in culture and lifestyle. Nationalizing policies favored by the low-fertility states can therefore be seen as an attempt to abolish these differences, to force the high-fertility states to abandon their culture and lifestyle.

Welcome Our New Robot Overlords

As if Instapundit’s weird enthusiasm for “robosexuality” weren’t disturbing enough, now there’s this prediction from two MIT geeks:

 Technological progress is going to leave behind some people, perhaps even a lot of people, as it races ahead. . . . [T]here’s never been a better time to be a worker with special skills or the right education, because these people can use technology to create and capture value. However, there’s never been a worse time to be a worker with only ‘ordinary’ skills and abilities to offer, because computers, robots, and other digital technologies are acquiring these skills and abilities at an extraordinary rate.

Why should this bother you? Well, there’s the insulting self-congratulatory smugness of it. Here are two guys with degrees from Harvard and MIT telling us that “special skills or the right education” are the keys to success. Translation: “Yea for us!”

And as for you hopeless dimwits “with only ‘ordinary’ skills and abilities to offer”? Tough luck. Should have gone to Harvard.

Robots will now replace whatever “ordinary” functions were previously performed by people without Harvard diplomas. We know this to be true because two Harvard graduates predicted it.

Russia: 15 Killed in Suicide Bombing

More than a dozen people were killed Sunday when a blast ripped through a railway station in the southern Russian city of Volgograd in what authorities say was an attack carried out by a suicide female bomber.
If confirmed, the presumed attack will prove to have been the second in the city in the space of just a little over two months and will provoke deep anxiety as Russia readies to host the Winter Olympics in Sochi early next year.
Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said 15 people were killed and more than 30 people injured in the blast at 12:45 p.m. (0845 GMT) near the metal detectors at the front entrance to Volgograd-1 train station.
The remains of a suspected suicide bomber were discovered at the scene of the blast and will undergo DNA testing, Markin said.
“A suicide bomber approaching a metal detector saw a policeman near it and, after growing nervous, set off an explosive device,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
Almost half of the victims are in a critical condition and doctors are fighting to save their lives, Volgograd region governor Sergei Bozhenov said.
Among the injured is a nine-year-old girl whose mother shielded her with her own body at the time of the blast, city mayor Irina Guseva told reporters. The woman died at the scene and the girl is in a critical state.

This bombing is almost certainly the work of Islamic extremists associated with the Chechen separatist movement.
