There is an old joke that whenever you see a really hot woman, you know that somewhere there’s a guy who’s sick and tired of her bullshit.

Which is to say, we can’t really blame Huma Abedin for her husband’s sleazy sexual compulsions. It’s wrong to derogate her looks or imply that somehow her Castrating Democrat Power Bitch personality might be the real explanation for why Anthony Weiner was looking for ~~love~~ phone sex in all the wrong ~~places~~ 22-year-olds.

Anyway, David Weigel has a piece at Slate about how the media never do anything else except praise Huma, and then there’s this:

Nobody forced the Weiner-Abedin clan to re-enter electoral politics. Nobody forced Abedin to go along with the stories that Weiner had fallen from grace in 2011 and gone on to be a devoted, chastened husband. Twice now, Weiner has used his personal life to sell himself as a more trustworthy politician. He did this after 2008, when he married Abedin, and he did it in 2012, after the birth of their kid. His 2013 campaign launch video began with a shot of the couple and the baby playing at home in the morning. “Every day starts right here,” said Weiner—who’s now insisting that his private life isn’t relevant to politics.
But back to Abedin. It’s very nice that her friends are feeling for her in this time of self-inflicted hardship. What, though, is missing from our politics if Abedin’s not in it? Before this week, she had a sterling reputation (based in part on how she didn’t appear at Weiner’s press conferences, but oh well) based on … what, exactly?

Read the rest because it’s amazing how Huma Abedin got a reputation for being amazing, simply because Democrats kept telling the media how dadgum amazing Huma is all the time.

Notice there are no conservative women who have this kind of amazing reputation? Michelle Malkin is arguably one of the most innovative New Media entrepreneurs on the planet, but you’ll never read any glowing profile features about her in Vanity Fair, will you? Nor could you imagine any prominent Republican getting caught “sexting” young hotties — say, maybe three young hotties, as a ballpark estimate — and then have feminists write of their undying admiration for the wife that this Republican creep betrayed.

Let’s be charitable: As loveless sham marriages go, certainly the Weiner-Abedin marriage is no less plausible than Bill and Hillary.

It’s important, when prominent conservatives coordinate messaging, that your project inspire raging paranoid fear on the Left. Everyone whose involvement is not already a matter of public record should be careful neither to confirm nor deny their participation:

“Believing they are losing the messaging war with progressives, a group of prominent conservatives in Washington — including the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and journalists from Breitbart News and the Washington Examiner — has been meeting privately since early this year to concoct talking points, coordinate messaging, and hatch plans for “a 30 front war seeking to fundamentally transform the nation,” according to documents obtained by Mother Jones.
Dubbed Groundswell, this coalition convenes weekly in the offices of Judicial Watch, the conservative legal watchdog group. During these hush-hush sessions and through a Google group, the members of Groundswell — including aides to congressional Republicans — cook up battle plans for their ongoing fights against the Obama administration, congressional Democrats, progressive outfits, and the Republican establishment and “clueless” GOP congressional leaders.

Certainly these “prominent conservatives in Washington” will disavow any claim that I ever attended their “hush-hush sessions” and, with no proof of such attendance, there can be no way to dispel the paranoid fantasies of deranged leftists that we’re all in on the plot.

Of course, we’re all in on it. Am I right?

No prominent conservative should ever deny that they’re part of this shadowy clandestine conspiracy, you see, because if you deny it, then obviously you aren’t really “prominent,” are you?

But a nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse, IYKWIMAITYD.

As politics, the Anthony Weiner scandal seems like a silly distraction. As a glimpse into sexual culture in the 21st century, however, it’s fascinating — and by “fascinating,” of course, I mean absolutely horrifying.

Every decent and normal person reading the messages between 22-year-old Sydney Leathers and Anthony Weiner is revolted to think that a young woman would feel compelled to degrade herself in this manner, merely to attract and maintain the “romantic” interest of a married (and, by then, completely disgraced) 47-year-old politician.

Who does these things? Where do people develop such appetites, such expectations, such habits? Why would an attractive young girl engage in this kind of “sexting” with a creepy old pervert?

Just to look at Sydney Leathers — and Evil Blogger Lady has a selection of photos, if you’d care to inspect the merchandise, as it were — most people would presume that this shapely brunette with a brilliant smile would have no shortage of handsome young suitors.

Alas, most young men today are cretinous slobs or neurasthenic wimps, lacking either masculine vigor or chivalrous impulses or both. Even if the most gallant, virile specimen of old-fashioned manhood could be reincarnated, however, one suspects there would be a mutual disinterest between him and the Sydney Leathers type of girl.

Lacking any sense of decorum, propriety or personal dignity — indeed, accustomed by early habit to the most disgraceful behaviors and coarse modes of expression — the Sydney Leathers type of girl would be bored to death by a steady, decent and responsible man. And of course, such a man would never desire her companionship.

Utterly corrupted, Sydney Leathers had a very accurate (that is to say, quite low) estimation of her self-worth: No good man could possibly want her, so she sought out a notoriously bad man, and felt herself compelled to perform for this vile pervert:

The woman who told her story to Richie said, “I was 22 and in a bad place. … I really admired him. … I thought he was misunderstood. Until I got to know him. … I was young and dumb.”

Yes, “young and dumb” — a Democrat — “22 and in a bad place.”

Could someone ask Sydney why, at age 22, she was “in a bad place”?

That is to say, could this progressive activist provide a sort of itinerary of the behaviors that led her to that place? Because it seems that far too many young women are in the same place, and America’s parents might like to know how to keep their daughters from going there.

If many of America’s daughters are in that place, why? How did we get to the point where this kind of behavior — really, you should read the sordid details of the Weiner-Leathers “romance” — is not really that surprising? The intersection of culture and politics:

What we know of Weiner’s latest shame is that, in the wake of his 2011 scandal, the married Democrat began an online correspondence with an Indiana girl, identified by BuzzFeed as Sydney Leathers, who says she worked on President Obama’s re-election campaign. To give you an idea of Ms. Leather’s partisan and ideological commitments, after a maniac’s shooting rampage in Tucson, Arizona, she created an online petition that blamed this deadly crime on Sarah Palin, whom Ms. Leathers condemned for “inciting violence.” (In fact, the Tucson gunman was a schizophrenic inspired by a leftwing conspiracy “documentary.”) Only a liberal girl could admire a creep like Weiner. And in one of his creepy sex messages to Ms. Leathers, the 48-year-old Weiner employed a vulgar term for the female genitalia to ask whether she was “smooth” down there.

My friend Donald Douglas this morning was rather shocked at how quickly I jumped onto the Sydney Leathers story, but I explained on Twitter what I said on the blog Tuesday night: Before I ever heard of Sydney Leathers, the BuzzFeed article was already a banner headline at Drudge, so there wasn’t really anything left to debate. Certainly I wasn’t “outing” her. Ezra Dulis at Big Journalism was all “[redacted] this” and “[redacted] that,” as if ignoring the news could make it less newsworthy, but the news business just doesn’t work that way.

What I added to the story — on the basis of tips from a keen-eyed Twitter buddy — was that (a) Sydney Leathers is a former Obama campaign worker and (b) Sydney Leathers authored a 2011 petition that condemned Sarah Palin for “inciting violence.” That’s news.

If anyone wants to criticize BuzzFeed, they ought to ask: Where did they get the ID of Sydney Leathers? Was this just a case of clever “investigative journalism” or was it — as I strongly suspect — the result of a tip from a source allied with Team Weiner?

This is not to say, however, that BuzzFeed should not have run with the story once they got that tip. Once you know somebody is shopping around that kind of info, you’re confronted with a kind of devil’s dilemma: “If I don’t take this scoop, somebody else will.”

Such dilemmas occur all the time in political reporting, where people with obvious motives offer you oppo-research materials.

Do you really want to turn up your nose at the offered dossier, knowing that if you do, you’ll probably find it reported in all its tawdry glory somewhere else? Remember that in 2008, there were reporters for major news organizations who knew about the reports of John Edwards’ extramarital affair, but wrongly dismissed them as “tabloid gossip.”

I’ve got a particular interest in the question of who ID’d Sydney Leathers because, for months, Ladd Ehlinger Jr. has entertained the possibility that the harassment of Brett Kimberlin’s enemies was somehow being funded by supporters of Anthony Weiner.

Wondering if ANYONE will ask #CarlosDanger who he hired to harass and cyberstalk people who wrote about his original cybersexing scandal.

Speculation isn’t my business, but when you observe extraordinary behavior, you can’t preemptively rule out extraordinary motives.

One of the bloggers who did the most damage to Anthony Weiner during the 2011 scandal was Patterico who — just coincidentally, FYI — was also a target of relentless harassment by the obscure alliance of forces that we call Team Kimberlin. Today, Patterico returns to the saga with a devastating timeline of how Weiner’s enablers made this latest scandal possible, and don’t miss this:

And, disturbingly for a guy who was talking about “cape and tights” to a high school girl in Delaware — a grooming line he had used with an adult woman with whom he had sexted — Weiner asks Sydney Leathers if her “pussy” is “smooth” . . .

Oh, my goodness. That seems rather weird, eh?

And while the New York Times sees a pattern, they apparently can’t be bothered to notice that pattern.

Do we know anyone else reputed to have a similar interest in young girls? Seems to ring a bell for some reason . . .

UPDATE: Linked at American Power — thanks! — and welcome, Instapundit readers! Since this involves a mass readership who may be unfamiliar with the background to which I’ve alluded, let me briefly rehash what regular readers of this blog already know:

In October 2010, Mandy Nagy (“Liberty Chick”) wrote a long article at Breitbart.com about convicted bomber Brett Kimberlin, who had re-emerged as a “progressive activist” with two 501(c) non-profit groups. Kimberlin threatened to sue about this, and a pattern of harassment began that eventually focused (perhaps as a target of opportunity) on blogger Aaron Walker.
Meanwhile, in 2011, a Democrat campaign consultant named Neal Rauhauser, became obsessed with the WeinerGate scandal, and especially with the blogger Patterico, who did a couple of the most devastating pieces about Weiner’s reported online interest in underage girls. Coincidentally (or not), Aaron Walker had once been a co-blogger at Patterico’s site.
In May 2012, Aaron Walker published a 28,000-word account of his legal conflict with Brett Kimberlin and, a week later, “Everybody Blog About Brett Kimberlin Day” turned this into a national story for the conservative blogosphere.

The seeming convergence of (a) Brett Kimberlin’s Enemies List and (b) a number of bloggers — including Ace of Spades and Lee Stranahan — who had written about WeinerGate could be explained as entirely coincidental. But there were reports that Team Weiner, in planning his political comeback effort, had engaged the services of various lawyers, researchers and consultants. Those of us who know how politics works behind the scenes are well aware that money is fungible: If Politician W hires Consulting Firm X for $20,000, this firm may then hire Freelance Researcher Y for $5,000 and Internet Operative Z for $3,000 on a basis of confidentiality, so that the activities of Y and Z cannot be traced to X, and Politician W then has clean hands (and plausible deniability) if Y and Z get caught red-handed.

Also: Progressives into young girls? Probably just a coincidence.

Is McAuliffe Taking One For The Team, Or Do Dems Think Virginians That Stupid?

Virginia is for lovers of elections, but it’s not clear whether Terry McAuliffe is the kind of Anthony Weiner that Virginia needs in the Governor’s Mansion. His main claim to fame, or wealth, was Global Crossing, right?

In 1997, McAuliffe invested $100,000 in Global Crossing, a telecommunications company providing fiber-optic networking services worldwide. After the company went public in 1998, McAuliffe sold his shares for a large profit. The company later filed for bankruptcy on January 28, 2002. Global Crossing reemerged from bankruptcy in late 2003 and in 2006, the Securities and Exchange Commission, after a four-year investigation, ruled that no wrongdoing occurred at Global Crossing and no enforcement action was necessary.

Oh, and then there is his whole GreenTech boondoggle, detailed over at Fairfax Free Citizen.
What is it that keeps this zombie fop twitching, then?

McAuliffe has had a prolific fundraising career within the Democratic Party, and has used his political career to make a personal fortune. McAuliffe has had a long personal and political relationship with Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton.

Ah, the Aristocracy of Pull. While not seeming to be any more effective than, say, President Barack Obama, one can say that McAuliffe has at least done a better job of faking showing up to work, to look at Global Crossing and GreenTech. But what is the point of running for Governor of Virginia, then? Does Terry think that there is enough media artillery available to blow away Ken Cuccinelli? Even if you don’t fancy Ken’s conservative slant on issues, nobody with at leas one good eye would deny that Cuccinelli’s résumé is a full essay, compared to McAuliffe’s sad little tweet to #UniteBlue.

Then there is the debate drubbing McAuliffe took from Cuccinelli last Saturday. While it’s likely that McAuliffe will do well amongst the junior Gollums infesting Northern Virginia, who keep re-electing the likes of ‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran and ‘Merry’ Gerry Connolly, is the rest of the state so decadent as to send a no-talent clown like McAuliffe to Richmnod? As we research more of McAuliffe’s rather whiffy record, one wonders how he will do at the next debate, in September. One does not expect Cuccinelli to get any less Irish or Italian in his onslaught. One also does not expect McAuliffe to be “packin’ the gear” enough to pick up his end. It would cut into his fundraising time.

This is not to say that Cuccinelli can afford complacency. One turns one’s back on a friend of the Clintons at one’s peril. Just ask Ambassador Stevens. Oh, wait.

No, the real point of Terry McAuliffe’s candidacy seems to be an attempt to blunt the rise of Cuccinelli, who, while by no means perfect, does seem to play a solid, methodical hand.
