Inside the #FreeKate Meltdown and Her Mother’s Self-Justifying Crazy-Talk Rant
Posted on | July 1, 2013 | 81 Comments
About two weeks ago, I started hearing rumors of a meltdown inside the “Free Kate” universe. What seems to have happened is that the Hunts and/or their lawyer became paranoid about their Facebook group, because things that were supposed to be private kept leaking out to the public (including me, of course). Kaitlyn Hunt’s family and their online supporters had become obsessed with “haters” (including me, of course) whose online activity they blamed for the waning support of their cause.
Failure and paranoia are necessary ingredients for an organizational meltdown, and it became one of those Hitler-in-the-bunker situations where the most loyal supporters of the cause were scapegoated.
When you invoke the principle of “Asking questions = Disloyalty,” you can expect bad things to happen. This toxic mixture of Fear and Loathing reached the combustible stage when administrators of the Facebook group were given a deadline to sign a confidentiality agreement and, reportedly, four of them quit in disgust, including Debi:
Debi joined up early, when it seemed that the “Free Kate” movement was going to be a popular successful cause. And then, after the unfortunate facts started coming out, Debi managed to hang in there for several weeks until one day she was presented with an ultimatum: “Sign this legally binding confidentiality agreement, or else.” No matter how loyal you were, would you sign this agreement?
Whoa! “Any breach of this confidentiality policy” by a volunteer Facebook group administrator could result in “damages and expenses including attorney fees”? These were volunteers, you understand — people who weren’t getting paid a dime, while the Hunt family reportedly raised more than $27,000 online in the first week or so after they launched the “Free Kate” campaign May 17. Yet those who were assisting them as volunteers were required to sign a document obligating them to pay “damages and expenses” if they failed to keep secret whatever they learned of the behind-the-scenes effort “working to get the charges dropped against Kaitlyn Hunt.”
At some point, amid the crisis which this provoked within the “Free Kate” group, Kaitlyn’s mother Kelley Hunt Smith went ballistic, unloading an angry rant against somebody who had expressed doubt about the version of the story that the Hunt family were telling. (Click to enlarge.)
While I don’t know who that was directed at, and I don’t feel like transcribing the whole thing, let’s examine a few highlights:
“You are sadly misinformed on pretty much everything you just said … and are basing your opinions on hearsay and media gossip. I have never once said ever that the girls started dating when Kate was 17.”
(In the original “Free Kate” petition that got more than 300,000 signatures, your ex-husband Steve Hunt wrote this: “My daughter Kaitlyn … is not guilty of anything other than a high school romance, but is being prosecuted … because she has a girlfriend who is 15. The two girls began dating while Kaitlyn was 17 but her girlfriend’s parents … waited until after Kaitlyn turned 18 and went to the police to have charges brought against her.” The wording of the petition was apparently revised after the actual facts became public, but these were the lies, repeated in the progressive media, which initially inspired so much misguided sympathy.)
“I made it clear the girls KNEW EACH [other] for quite some time. We live in a very small town and [the] girls went to the same middle school and in fact knew each other when Kate was 17.”
(This is certainly an interesting defense: “It wasn’t like my precious Kate waited for this girl to start ninth grade before she began scoping her out. Kate had had her eye on her future lesbian lover ever since she was still in middle school.” And is it such a “very small town”? The population of Indian River County is more than 140,000. Kaitlyn just graduated from Sebastian River High School, which has about 1,900 students. Why, it’s practically Mayberry!)
“The *facts* that were stated clearly in the arrest affidavit states that BOTH girls mutually and consensually kissed and touch each other in the bathroom, they did NOT have sex.”
(Anyone who can read the arrest affidavit knows that Kelley Hunt Smith is playing a game with the definition of “sex” here.)
“I have stated that it is in my opinion that the other girl’s family is against this and pushed this forward legally because do not agree with homosexuality. I have plenty of proof and facts to back up my opinion. …”
(Why does Kelley Hunt Smith keep bringing this up as if it were relevant? If an adult is illegally having sex with your 14-year-old, does it really matter why you report this to the police?)
“As far as admins, you clearly have been told lies. We had to let 4 admins go due to them having drama and being unable to move forward and work well with the other admins.”
(Notice the consistency with which Kelley Hunt Smith externalizes blame for any conflict she is involved in: Just as Kaitlyn Hunt’s arrest is blamed on those hateful parents who didn’t want their daughter involved with Kaitlyn, the administrators who didn’t want to sign the confidentiality agreement were “unable to move forward and work well with the other admins.” The minute anyone has a problem with Kelley, she decides that the conflict can’t be her fault, but is instead because there is something wrong with the other person.)
“The bottom line is this is a horrible misuse of power and the law. This is a family issue. It should have been handled 100% differently. They have not only destroyed my daughter and our family, but their own daughter as well.”
(This argument — that Kaitlyn’s crime was “a family issue” that should not have been reported to law enforcement — supposes that the Hunt family would have handled the situation responsibly. Such a supposition is at odds with everything we know about the Hunt family.)
“[W]e are talking about 2 young truly good girls here, that had no idea they were doing anything criminal or wrong. How anyone can spew such vile lies and hate toward an innocent 18 year old teenager is beyond me. Calling her a predator, I mean really?”
Notice her mother’s use of the phrase “innocent 18 year old teenager.” According to Kelley Hunt Smith, her daughter Kaitlyn is such a naive and unworldly youth that it is “a horrible misuse of power and the law” to hold her legally accountable for her actions. On the other hand — also according to Kelley Hunt Smith — a 14-year-old is mature and responsible enough that she can consent to sex without any concern that she is being wrongfully exploited.
This illogical nonsense is accompanied by still more blame-shifting: According to Kelley, the problem is not Kaitlyn Hunt’s actions, or the attempt to invalidate Florida’s age-of-consent laws, but rather people who “spew such vile lies and hate” about Kaitlyn Hunt.
Hey, lady: Nobody outside Indian River County ever heard of your daughter until you decided to make her a cause célèbre of the gay-rights movement — America’s Most Famous Sex Offender™ — instead of letting her plead guilty to a lesser offense and avoid jail.
Featured on the Today show, May 23
But no, you made you choice, and for a while it looked like you were on your way to glory. You got interviewed on the Today show, you were featured on CNN, and your supporters sent you to New York City for the Gay Pride Parade. But your 15 minutes of fame probably won’t be much help to Kaitlyn in Judge Pegg’s courtroom.
Is it vile hate to say Kaitlyn Hunt should have taken the plea bargain?

The Hunt family continued their campaign to make their 18-year-old daughter America’s Most Famous Sex Offender™ by taking her to New York for Sunday’s 44th annual Gay Pride Parade. Because defending Kate’s right to have gay sex with 14-year-olds isn’t all about lawyers and petitions, you know. It’s also about marching in parades and sightseeing in Manhattan and riding around in limousines.
For those who aren’t familiar with the NYC Gay Pride Parade, it’s a wholesome family-friendly celebration of perversity diversity.

Are drag queens and uncircumcised penises more popular in the LGBT community than lesbian sex with 14-year-olds? Let’s ask Dykes on Bikes:
This photo has been strategically cropped to keep the blog from becoming NSFW, but if you really want to see the uncropped photo, let me warn you about (a) her beer belly and (b) pierced nipples.
Amid all this wholesomeness, certainly there were many people who agreed with the ACLU that it is “fairly innocuous and extremely common” to play Spin the Dildo with a 14-year-old runaway:
[The 14-year-old] ran away from home to spend the night [of Jan. 4] in Kaitlyn’s bedroom where, to quote the affidavit by Sheriff’s Office Detective Jeremy Shepherd, the two girls “put their fingers inside of each other’s vaginas, put their mouths on each other’s vaginas, and both of them used a vibrator on each other to insert it in each other’s vaginas.”
Happy 14th Birthday! (Batteries not included.)
For some strange reason, a search of news sites doesn’t turn up any mainstream media coverage of Kaitlyn Hunt’s Gay Pride Parade appearance in New York City. It’s almost as if the media don’t think the “Free Kate” movement is good for gay rights. Perhaps the media even disagree with Kate’s mom, Kelley Hunt Smith:
“They are teens, it’s healthy and normal.”
Sometimes the media don’t want to publicize exactly what the liberal agenda is for your kids. When the American Life League wanted to place advertisements showing examples of Planned Parenthood’s sex education materials, the New York Times rejected these ads as being “too graphic.” Do you really want to click this link? Don’t say you weren’t warned, and if it’s NSFW — if you could be fired for viewing Planned Parenthood sex-education lessons in your office cubicle — why is it OK to show it to your kids in public school?
This kind of hide-the-facts trick explains how “Free Kate” could get more than 300,000 signatures on a petition claiming Kaitlyn Hunt just had a “high school romance,” as if she got caught sending notes in math class: “Do you like me? Check yes or no.” To cite the actual facts of this case — e.g., the arrest affidavit — is unfair, they say:
Liberals: "It's perfectly OK for #FreeKate to do it, but it's wrong for anyone to describe what she actually did." @CFLancop @Lorini08

It is beyond question that the Westboro “Baptist” “Church”, is perhaps the most successful band of trolls to walk the earth since Frank Zappa (God rest him) shuffled off this mortal coil. Still, as disgusting a collection of para-human filth as they are, up to this point they’ve had a certain twisted logic to their attention-whoring displays. Until Friday, when they picked one of the rare examples of young female celebrities NOT known for public exhibitionism, overindulgence in recreational chemicals, bizarre behavior, vile taste in clothes and/or music, and public drooling over certain half-bright half-Kenyan politicians to condemn in the same breath as homosexuals, shellfish, and bacon cheeseburgers. Yes, I am referring to this young lady.
Well, all I know about Taylor Swift is what I read on WeSmirch, but that’s enough to convince me that as usual, the WBC is full of crap.
Even if she was dating one of the Kennedy clan for a while.

After Rachel Jeantel’s “creepy ass cracker” went legendary, Twitter swung into action. For reasons that refuse to make sense, like some of the Zimmerman trial testimony, this blogger felt the need to work ‘cracker’ into rock lyrics:

Evanescent Youth, Predatory Persistence
Posted on | June 29, 2013 | 152 Comments
“Now there is what appears to be a concerted effort to lower, or even obliterate, the age of consent; but I suspect the culprits engaged therein are less interested in long-term relationships — children eventually grow up, after all — than in simply getting their hands into some poor kid’s Garanimals.”
— Charles G. Hill, Dustbury.com
Our friend Mr. Hill has zeroed in on exactly the problem with this particular perversity. Pedophilia is the fetishization of youth, wherein a person is persistently obsessed with sexual objects of a certain age. This dehumanizes the object of the obsession, and is the opposite of the “one life, one wife” permanent pair-bonding that is the social ideal.
Because youth does not last, neither can the “relationship” between the pedophile and his prey. One may point to the unusual exception: After her release from prison in 2005, Mary Kay LeTourneau married Vili Fualaau, with whom she began her involvement when he was a 13-year-old middle schooler and she was his 34-year-old teacher.
Mary Kay LeTourneau in court, 1998.
But this merely highlights how such relationships transgress the lifelong pair-bonding norm: First, LeTourneau abandoned her husband and four children to pursue this relationship and, second, she is now 51 and her second husband (the father of her two youngest children) is 30. How much longer may we expect this fellow in the prime of life to remain a devoted husband to his elderly wife?
If the LeTourneau case is exceptional in many ways, nevertheless it is typical in others. The adult who pursues illegal sex with minors is always — invariably — a troubled personality, either (a) the maladapted misfit unable to find a satisfactory and enduring adult relationship, or else (b) a sort of sexual opportunist seeking a new thrill to relieve the boredom or soothe the disappointments of adult life.
Some who have been more sympathetic to LeTourneau have pointed to problems in her marriage to Steve LeTourneau, seeing her as the victim of domestic abuse. And while this background may to some extent explain LeTourneau’s problems, it cannot excuse her illegal actions because if we were to accept such an excuse even once, no student would be safe from the predatory sexual interest of any teacher discontented with the quality of their adult relationships.
“Your honor, my client ‘s wife is a nagging bitch, so you
can’t blame him for boning that 15-year-old.
And, hey, it was consensual.”
This commonly heard rationalization, that illegal sex with minors is not really a crime when it is “consensual,” is invalid because (a) it ignores every advantage that the older offender may employ to obtaining such illegal consent, and (b) it ignores the fact that young people are not competent judges of their own best interests.
Point (b) is something that every responsible parent understands. If I were to let my children do whatever pleases them, they would never do anything except watch TV and play video games. Some children are more mature and responsible than others, but their superior qualities cannot be used as evidence against them, as it were, to argue that they should be treated as sexual “fair game.”
“Your honor, the alleged victim is fully developed —
just look at the rack on her, will ya? — and she’s so
emotionally mature that it was only natural she
wanted to get naked with her sophomore gym teacher.
Like I said, it was consensual.”
All age-of-consent laws are to some extent arbitrary: One day a young person is jailbait — off-limits, taboo, the Forbidden Fruit — and then they hit the Magic Birthday where they can legally do anything they want (consensually) with any of their fellow adults. Police, prosecutors, judges and juries may in every case use their discretion in regard to the enforcement of these laws, considering all circumstances in determining how severely any specific infraction should be punished.
One summer day in 1974, I arrived at high school band camp to find all my hoodlum buddies in the trombone section abuzz with the excitement provoked by a certain freshman majorette. Tanned and brunette, with high cheekbones and the brilliant white smile of a carnivore, Sally on that hot Georgia day wore pink short-shorts tightly encasing a pelvis that was a casus belli — hips to kill or die for — and she had legs of perfection beyond the power of mere words to describe. Completing her ensemble of adolescent irresistibility, Sally wore a tight white midriff top, exposing her lean abdomen and emphasizing the pert firmness of her breasts.
Nearly four decades later, that splendid vision remains embedded in my neural cortex, and I doubt any other alumnus of the 1974 Douglas County High School Marching Tiger Band can say he’s ever forgotten what Sally looked like that August day. Her smile so bright, her body so temptingly lithe — oh, every male within eyesight of Sally the Freshman Majorette must have struggled to restrain his inner pirate: “Arggh, what a comely young wench you are! You will be mine!”
Sally was eventually wooed and won by our band’s drum major, a former trumpet section leader who was a senior that year, and the last I heard they were still married. I invoke the vision of Sally her first day at band camp — when all the guys were asking each other, “Who the hell is that chick in the pink hot pants?” — to say that there are entirely understandable urges which the law nonetheless requires us to resist.
Dude, the Pope would have hit that. Read more
