The conspiracy theorists have already gotten way ahead of me on this story. I’m on a self-imposed deadline today for a long article about the life and death of Michael Hastings and the first question that interested me was, “How the hell does a journalist afford a brand-new Mercedes-Benz C250?”

A bit of research and a couple of phone calls pointed toward the answer: Big-money book deals for a guy who started his journalism career with Newsweek before moving onto high-dollar magazines like Rolling Stone and GQ that would never, under any imaginable circumstance, pay a nickel to a conservative reporter.

Well, I could expand on that theme a bit — and expect to do so later — but in the meantime there’s this long article to finish. But it’s interesting to notice that while everyone in the world of political journalism is saying nice things about Michael Hastings, at least one guy whose job is writing about cars isn’t too impressed:

Mercedes-Benz USA is no doubt sweating bullets over this one. An eyewitness report says that Mr. Hastings was driving at an excessive rate of speed down a suburban street when his car “suddenly jackknifed” and hit a tree “with the force of a bomb” . . .
This isn’t good. The official ad copy for the C-Coupe states

Like every Mercedes-Benz coupe, it wraps four sport seats and passion for the road in sleek style. And like every C-Class, it’s a paragon of engineering virtue and extraordinary value. Put it together, and it’s like nothing else.

Nowhere in there does it say anything about “then this sucker is going to jackknife out of control and char you like a steak ordered by a high-school dropout at Ponderosa”. . . . If I owned a C250 I’d be outside staring at the thing wondering if it was safe to drive it at 100mph in a suburb.

A fitting obituary for an irreverent iconoclast? Or . . . too soon?

Well, yes, that would be a fairly accurate description of the MSNBC audience, but I had in mind the latest news from Ohio:

Three Ashland residents held a cognitively disabled woman and her child against her will for two years and forced her to perform manual labor for them, law enforcement officials said in a news release issued Tuesday. According to various published reports, a fourth person has been charged in connection with the case, but authorities have declined to name that individual.
The conspiracy included beating the disabled woman and her child, threatening the woman with a firearm, threatening to kill the woman and her child, threatening the woman and her child with large snakes, and forcing them to sleep in a padlocked room with a large iguana, according to charges filed in U.S. District Court.
Jordie L. Callahan, 26; Jessica L. Hunt, 31; and Daniel J. Brown, 33, were all arrested Tuesday and charged with forced labor. If convicted, they could face life in prison.

You may ask yourself, why would a “cognitively disabled woman and her child” be especially coveted for this kind of situation?

[The victim] suffered from a cognitive disability and received monthly public assistance payments . . .

(“Public assistance payments” = welfare.)

Hunt reportedly was in possession of all of [the victim]’s government benefits cards and their associated PINs. Hunt normally used nearly all of the money on the cards and rarely gave any money to [the victim], according to the affidavit.

Being “cognitively disabled,” in other words, made the victim a sort of human ATM, whose government benefits made her a dependable source of cash for her captors. So if you were wondering how Obama won Ohio — well, “low-information voters,” IYKWIMAITYD.

One more interesting detail, which is why someone called my attention to this story: Remember that in the case of accused child rapist and murderer David Renz, he had a juvenile record; when he was 15, he molested a 9-year-old girl. Coincidentally (or not) one of the perps in this Ohio case also had a juvenile record:

Jordie Callahan, one of three Ashland residents arrested Wednesday in a federal human trafficking case, previously was found delinquent as a child by virtue of committing acts which would have constituted the offense of rape if committed by an adult. When he was 15, he engaged in a sexual encounter with an 11-year-old girl.

Weird, huh? This is something that the “Free Kate” supporters refuse to recognize: Criminals usually begin their criminal careers as juvenile offenders. Kaitlyn Hunt‘s defenders insist that it would be wrong to treat her as a criminal for having sex with a 14-year-old, and insist that it is absurd to say that Kaitlyn is a danger to the community merely because she broke the law. (It’s not as if Kaitlyn has any tendency toward violence, right?) Besides, the “Free Kate” movement says, she was 18 and her girlfriend was 14 — only four years apart!

Yes, and that was the exact age difference between Jordie Callahan and the 11-year-old girl he molested when he was 15.

Oops.

A contempt for the law and a recklessness in pursuit of selfish gratification are characteristic of career criminals, who typically begin showing a wayward streak as juvenile offenders. To claim that prosecuting teenagers for breaking the law is a violation of their “rights” is to encourage and enable this lawless hoodlum attitude.

Even while this dangerous attitude of lawlessness is being deliberately fomented in the name of “rights,” we find young people being threatened and bullied in the name of “tolerance”:

A Tennessee community college professor ordered her students to wear ribbons supporting gay rights and said those who believed in the traditional definition of marriage are just “uneducated bigots” who “attack homosexuals with hate” . . .
Students in a general psychology class at Columbia State Community College were directed by their professor to wear “Rainbow Coalition” ribbons for an entire day and express their support for the homosexual community . . .

A psychology professor? The inmates are running the asylum. And also, probably, watching waaaayy too much MSNBC.

Some of these creepazoids were as young as 18, the same age as Kaitlyn Hunt when she fingered a 14-year-old in a school toilet stall, so maybe the ACLU will launch a “Free the Polk County 41” campaign or something. Here’s an interesting perp caught in the dragnet:

One of the suspects, James Walker, 46, a costumer’s assistant at Disney World, believed he was going to hookup with a 15-year-old boy. The Davenport man told undercover officers that he had to be careful what he said because he knew he was breaking the law, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Just like Kaitlyn Hunt. But … it was consensual!

Raped and Killed by the Sequester?

After more than 27 years in the news business, I’m used to reading about frightful events — war, terrorism, catastrophic floods and earthquakes — but every once in a while even I can be stunned into horrified silence when I encounter a sentence like this:

The girl later required surgery, Fitzpatrick said.

Oh. My. God.

Exactly how painfully horrifying that sentence is, you can’t really understand outside the context of the headline:

10-year-old, Onondaga County DA says

The conventions that prohibit journalists from identifying the victims of sexual assault inhibit the Syracuse Post-Standard from saying that the 10-year-old whose life Lori Bresnahan saved was her own daughter. And similar inhibitions — the presumption of innocence, yadda, yadda — require journalists to say that the evil monster who raped that little girl and stabbed her mother to death is merely a “suspect.”

Bresnahan put up a fight and told the girl to run. The girl opened the back door and ran.
As the girl ran away, she noticed Bresnahan was able to break free from the car. She saw Renz chasing Bresnahan around the car, but did not witness the murder.
Two citizens driving on Verplank Road saw the girl running and stopped. They helped her and called 911 at 8:58 p.m. They did not see Renz, who had run into the woods. . . .
State police officers began tracking Renz on foot and with K-9 units. They were helped by the Sheriff’s Office and the Air One Helicopter. At 9:53 p.m., an officer saw a person matching a description of the suspect, stopped his car and tackled David Renz.
Renz had Bresnahan’s keys in his pocket and blood on his clothes, said Fitzpatrick. DNA testing matched the blood to the little girl . . .

He had the little girl’s blood on his clothes. She “later required surgery.”

David Senz is merely accused of this, you see.

The conventions of journalism require us to refer to him as a “suspect” or a “defendant,” and the same was true in January — two months before this brutal atrocity — when 29-year-old David Renz was arrested on a federal child pornography charge.

According to authorities (another one of those journalistic conventions, the attribution necessary to make the libel lawyers happy) David Renz had more than 500 illegal videos and more than 3,000 illegal images stored in encrypted files on his computer.

You might think that if the feds nabbed this kind of ~~pervert~~ ~~criminal~~ accused suspect, they would never turn him loose. But you’re not a Harvard Law graduate like U.S. Magistrate Andrew T. Baxter:

When Renz appeared in U.S. District Court Jan. 11 for a hearing about whether he should be detained over the child pornography charges he was facing, Magistrate Judge Andrew Baxter mentioned that he knew Renz had a juvenile record . . .

What? A juvenile record? Yeah: In 1999, when David Renz was 15, he molested a 9-year-old girl. And then the FBI busts him in January with thousands of child pornography files and, despite knowing that Benz also had a juvenile record, U.S. Magistrate Andrew T. Baxter (J.D., Harvard Law, 1981) turned him loose two days after his Jan. 9 arrest.
