Russians Cut Off at Lyman UPDATE: Russia Announces ‘Withdrawal’

Posted on | October 1, 2022 | Comments Off on Russians Cut Off at Lyman UPDATE: Russia Announces ‘Withdrawal’

The headlines say the Ukrainians have the Russians “surrounded” or “encircled” at Lyman, although from what I gather, the fact is that the Russians are cut off — can’t retreat, can’t get supplies or reinforcements — because the Ukrainians have all the routes into the town within artillery range, which is almost the same thing in a tactical sense, but not what most people think of when they see the word “surrounded.”

Anyway, here’s the Bloomberg version of the story:

Russian troops are said to be surrounded by Ukrainian forces in the strategic eastern city of Lyman, a day after President Vladimir Putin claimed the area as part of Russia and held a ceremony and pop concert to mark the occasion.
Putin said Moscow was annexing four occupied Ukrainian regions “forever” and repeated warnings that he’d use all available means to defend the territories. The US and European Union members denounced the move. . . .
Igor Girkin, the former commander of separatist forces in the Donbas, said late Friday that Russian forces in Lyman, in the Donetsk region, are totally surrounded. He accused military commanders of “idiocy“ for allowing it to happen. . . .
Some 5,000 Russian troops are said to be surrounded around Lyman as Kyiv’s forces push to recapture the strategic rail hub in Ukraine’s east, a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he’d annexed the region.
The Moscow-backed forces have no way of leaving the town beyond “trying to escape, die or surrender,” Luhansk Governor Serhiy Haidai said on Facebook. If Lyman is liberated, Ukraine’s army may press east toward Kreminna, he said. Five nearby settlements were liberated on Saturday, a military spokesman said.
“Ukraine is about to capture Lyman and it shows its military prowess again by humiliating the Russian army,” Mick Ryan, a defense analyst and retired Australian general, said on Twitter.

I’ve long since given up trying to get useful tactical information from these media reports, but I keep being angered by nonsense like the description of Lyman as a “strategic rail hub.” It was “strategic” as a bridgehead which the Ukrainians held on the east bank of the Siverskyi Donets river until May and, predictably, once they lost Lyman, they lost Sievierodonetsk shortly thereafter. Whatever railroads go through Lyman, its “strategic” value is as a river crossing.

Far more useful information from the ISW:

Ukrainian forces will likely capture or encircle Lyman within the next 72 hours. Russian forces continued to withdraw from positions around Lyman on September 30 as Ukrainian forces continued to envelop Russian troops in the area.[8] The Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) officials and Russian war correspondents stated that Russian forces still control Lyman but have withdrawn from their positions in Drobysheve (around 6km northwest of Lyman) and Yampil (about 13km southeast of Lyman). Russian sources claimed that Russian forces still control one road from Lyman to Torske, while Ukrainian forces have cut off the Drobysheve-Torske road in the Stavky area. Russian sources also noted the increasing activity of Ukrainian reconnaissance and sabotage groups on the Svatove-Torske highway northeast of Lyman after reportedly crossing the Zherebets River. Geolocated footage also showed Ukrainian artillery striking withdrawing Russian forces near Torske. Some Russian milbloggers claimed that Ukrainian forces have crossed the Siverskyi Donets River in Dronivka and are now operating in the forests south of Kreminna. Russian sources uniformly noted that Ukrainian artillery continues to interdict Russian forces’ single remaining egress route on the Kreminna-Torske road.

Finding all these places on a map takes more time than most people are willing to expend, but I’ll simplify it by saying that (a) by taking Drobysheve and striking east toward Stavky, the Ukrainians have made it impossible for the Russians at Lyman to retreat northward, (b) by taking Yampil, the Ukrainians have made it impossible for the Russians to retreat to the southeast, which leaves (c) the road to Kreminna via Zarichne and Torske, which (d) is jeopardized by Ukrainian advances from Yampil and/or Dronivka. All things considered, it appears futile for the Russians to keep fighting at Lyman, and the only real question is how many of them can escape to Kreminna in any organized condition.

The likely answer is, not many. Incidentally, one of the Russian units now trapped in Lyman is the 752nd Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment:

It’s a regiment with a tragic tradition of getting cut off, surrounded and all but destroyed. The 752nd GMRR was one of two regiment-size units that, on New Year’s Eve in 1994, got enveloped in Grozny during the first of Russia’s two bloody wars in Chechnya.
The 752nd GMRR barely survived the First Chechen War. Its chances in Ukraine aren’t much better. . . .
There reportedly were as many as 5,000 Russians in [Lyman before the Ukrainian advance across the Oskil River]. Some lightly-armed reservists from two Russian battalions. Two regiments from the separatist Luhansk People’s Republic. And the 752nd GMRR, arguably the best of the units in the Lyman garrison.
The 752nd on paper is a powerful formation, although it like much of the Russian army has suffered steep losses as Russia’s wider war on Ukraine grinds into its eighth month. Before the war, the 752nd GMRR possessed 41 T-72 tanks, 120 BMP-2 fighting vehicles, 36 2S3 howitzers and scores of other vehicles. It’s unclear how many vehicles remain. . . .
By Friday there was no road out of Lyman that the Ukrainians couldn’t bring under intensive fire. Whether the 752nd GMRR and other units in Lyman surrender, attempt a breakout or fight to the last man will determine how many casualties the Ukrainians inflict as they inevitably liberate Lyman in the coming days.

There are some reports that Russia is sending reinforcements to the area, but I don’t put much stock in those reports. If Russia had reserves available, why would they have waited until now to deploy them?

The most likely scenario is that most of the Russians at Lyman will surrender, although some may yet be able to escape to Kreminna. Once that happens, we can expect a lull in the fighting while Ukraine consolidates its position before resuming their inevitable eastward advance, toward the supply lines of the Russian forces now at Sievierodonetsk. That could take weeks, however, which means winter will arrive before much more can be done on the Donbas front.

UPDATE: No sooner had I published this than Russia announced it was “withdrawing” from Lyman. It’s nighttime in Ukraine, so I assume this “withdrawal” means the Russians are making a run for it before sunrise, probably leaving behind most of their motor vehicles and heavy equipment. It’s a complete humiliation for Putin.

Worst. President. Ever.

Posted on | September 29, 2022 | Comments Off on Worst. President. Ever.

Most historians consider James Buchanan our worst president, although some would say Jimmy Carter was worse. Yet I think neither Buchanan nor Carter was worse than the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. His latest idiotic utterance:

President Joe Biden on Wednesday warned oil and gas companies against increasing prices for consumers as Hurricane Ian neared landfall along Florida’s southwest coast.
“Do not, let me repeat, do not use this as an excuse to raise gasoline prices or gouge the American people,” Biden said at the start of a conference on hunger in America.
Biden said that the hurricane “provides no excuse for price increases at the pump” and if it happens, he will ask federal officials to determine ”whether price gouging is going on.”
“America is watching. The industry should do the right thing,” Biden added. . . .
The American Petroleum Institute, which represents the oil and gas industry, said in a statement, “Gasoline prices are determined by market forces — not individual companies — and claims that the price at the pump is anything but a function of supply and demand are false.”

Ace goes on an extended rant about this: “Confiscate the kulaks’ farms and kill them, and then blame the dead traitors for the poor yields. It’s been part of the authoritarians’ playbook since the 1930s. . . . And now here comes the man NeverTrump swore to us was an ‘honorable’ ‘moderate’ ‘centrist’ who would ‘restore our norms’ and ‘save our Republic’ to tell mom and pop gas stations to sell fuel at a loss, so that he can avoid the political heat of his policy of state-mandated scarcity.”

We are left with two possibilities: Either (a) Biden doesn’t understand anything about economics or (b) he’s deliberately scapegoating the petroleum industry for problems caused by his own policies.

But still the question remains: “Where’s Jackie?”

Surviving the Hurricane, So Far

Posted on | September 29, 2022 | Comments Off on Surviving the Hurricane, So Far

Many times, I’ve referred to my oldest daughter as living in “a swing state with palm trees,” because I didn’t want any left-wing nutjobs targeting her and her family, but I think everybody knows what state I meant.

Last week, she was planning to evacuate because the National Weather Service projections showed Hurricane Ian headed directly for their southwest Florida location, but then the projection shifted, showing the storm would hit Tampa, more than 150 miles north. So she decided to stay, rather than take to the road with two toddlers, but then on Tuesday, the projection shifted again and, as everyone now knows, the storm slammed into the area around Fort Myers and Port Charlotte, midway between Tampa and my daughter’s location.

The power went out early Wednesday morning when a transformer blew out in their neighborhood, and about half the city is now without electricity. Downtown was totally flooded Wednesday, but my daughter’s house east of the city is still above water, although they’ve kept a close eye on the canal behind their house. They’ve got a three-day food supply, so they’re in pretty good shape. Watching national TV on Wednesday, you might have gotten the idea that the folks trapped in Naples and Fort Myers were guilty of ignoring warnings or had disobeyed evacuation orders, which is grossly misleading. Rather, the fault is with the shifting projections of the storm’s track. Sunday and Monday, it looked like Naples and Fort Myers would escape the worst of Hurricane Ian. It wasn’t until Tuesday that the projection changed, and by that time, it was too late to evacuate because there wasn’t a gallon of gasoline to be had in the whole region. My daughter and her husband had managed to find gas a few days earlier, but it’s nearly 400 miles from their home to the Georgia state line — too far to go on one tank of gas — and what were they supposed to do under these extraordinary circumstances? As I say, they’ve been relatively lucky so far. Just a few miles from their house, hundreds of homes are underwater, and even the fire station got flooded.

This isn’t New Orleans in Katrina. So far, there’s been no looting. The sheriff of Collier County is a Republican, so popular he was re-elected without opposition two years ago, and so at least residents don’t have to worry about anarchy. And it ought to be pointed out that the political polarities of Hurricane Ian are reversed from those of Hurricane Katrina: The allegedly “racist” Republican president was blamed for that 2005 disaster, despite the failures of state and local officials, who were Democrats. Now, we have Saint Joseph of the Blessed Landslide in the White House, and liberals are just looking for any excuse to make Florida’s Republican governor the scapegoat for Hurricane Ian.

Probably that’s why there’s now an effort to blame victims of the storm as having ignored evacuation orders — most of them are white, so it’s OK to blame them, although it can be pointed out that the warnings before Katrina hit New Orleans were much clearer, and were even more blatantly ignored. But, as I say, by the time the evacuation orders for Lee County and Collier County were issued Tuesday, it was already practically impossible to leave, because of the unavailability of gasoline. Others have pointed out the irony that many people from Tampa, which was previously believed to be the big target of the storm, actually left that city and went south to Fort Myers and Naples to escape the storm, only to have it turn southward in the final 24 hours before landfall.

This is another embarrassment for the Trust the Science™ crowd — the “experts” who tell us they can predict the distant future with climate-change computer simulations are unable to predict the direction of a single storm, when thousands of lives may hinge on the accuracy of their projections. A hurricane that was supposed to hit Tampa as a Category Three instead hit Fort Myers as a Category Four? “Oops,” say the experts.

Anyway, I don’t care about politics, I care about my daughter and her two children, spending the night in a dark house with no electricity. She’s still able to get text messages and I told her, “You’re living in a certified disaster area now. Leave [your husband] behind to scare off the looters and come home!” Her husband has a sufficient supply of ammunition for home-defense purposes, just in case any out-of-town looters show up.

Hopefully, we’ll see those grandkids soon.

‘The Hard-Hitting Social Commentary We’re Trying to Get Across’

Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh in ‘Don’t Worry Darling’

Because my 19-year-old daughter is a Harry Styles fan, I have a built-in bias against Olivia Wilde, the 38-year-old ex-girlfriend of Jason Sudekis, whom Styles is currently dating. Also, it should be pointed out, Wilde’s grandfather was an infamous Commie, which is all the more reason to hate her. Now, as the cherry on top of this hot fudge sundae of hate, we have the revelation that a villainous character in Wilde’s new movie is based on Jordan Peterson — or, to put it more accurately, the character is based on an ignorant stereotype of Peterson:

Katie Silberman: [Heavy sigh, more scrolling] Last major point, I guess, is the Jordan Peterson thing.
Shane Van Dyke: The what?
Olivia Wilde: Frank the cult leader. Chris Pine? Katie and I thought the version you pitched us was a bit one-note, so we put our heads together and figured out a way to really bind all the hard-hitting social commentary we’re trying to get across. WB thought we should let you know, just so there’s no surprises when the movie comes out.
Carey Van Dyke: And what does Frank have to do with Jordan Peterson?
Olivia Wilde: You know…white male pseudo-intellectual. Leader of the incels. Spouts weird shit about chaos and lobsters?
Katie Silberman: That’s Frank all over.
Shane Van Dyke: No disrespect, gang, but have you read Jordan Peterson or listened to any of his lectures?
Olivia Wilde: Um, eww! I’ve never drank bleach before but I know it’s poison!

Perhaps most offensive here is Wilde’s assertion that Peterson — a professor of clinical psychology, who produced important research while on the faculty of Harvard in the 1990s — is a “pseudo-intellectual,” No, ma’am. Whatever your disagreements with the professor may be, he is a genuine intellectual, and there is nothing “pseudo” about it. Apparently, Wilde’s opinion of Peterson is not based on direct knowledge of his work, but rather is based on feminist criticism of his work. And her idea that Peterson is “Leader of the incels” — where did she get that? Isn’t that misbegotten notion also likely traceable to something Wilde got by reading Amanda Marcotte, Jessica Valenti and other feminists?

There is a paranoid pattern of belief on the Left where everything they hate is somehow related to every other thing they hate. For example, liberals hate Trump and they hate racism, therefore Trump is a racist, and anyone who writes something that liberals consider racist must be connected to Trump. The whole thing about “incels” sprang into public consciousness in 2014 when Elliot Rodger went on a murder spree in Santa Barbara, California. Feminist writers like Marcotte and Valenti became rather obsessed with this massacre as some kind of symbol of the fatal menace of “misogyny,” of which “incels” like Elliot Rodger were the violent tip of the hateful iceberg. A few months after the Santa Barbara massacre, “GamerGate” zoomed into prominence and, in the minds of many feminists, was instantly connected to the “incel” phenomenon. It was around the same time that Jordan Peterson began to become popular on YouTube, and I can only conjecture that his temporal proximity to these events caused feminists to associate him with the whole “incel”/“misogyny” phenomenon. Of course, there is the fact that Peterson looks at human differences from the standpoint of evolutionary psychology (dismissed by Wilde as “weird shit about chaos and lobsters”) which feminists insist is inherently sexist. That is to say, any man who suggests there are natural differences between men and women is guilty of “misogyny,” according to feminists and — to follow this everything-is-connected belief pattern to its irrational conclusion — because “incels” are also misogynists, then it is fair to view Jordan Peterson as a “leader of the incels.” In the same way, the Soviet Union imposed Lysenkoism and condemned basic agricultural science as “bourgeois.”

If the only tool you’ve got is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. And if the only ideology you have is feminism, every problem looks like misogyny. Because of the unipolar dynamic of feminist ideology, everything they consider problematic is lumped together as part of an oppressive system, and therefore Professor Peterson gets dumped into the same “basket of deplorables” as Donald Trump and “incels.”

Such is the “hard-hitting social commentary” Olivia Wilde wedged into her new movie, and really, Harry Styles needs to dump that bitch.

By the way, Harry — my daughter loves you. And she’s cute.

She doesn’t like lobsters, though.
